Restored PST file

I am running Outlook 2010 on a Windows 2008 R2 with Terminal Services.
 I use windows server backup to back up the server daily.
One user reported all the contacts are missing.  I tried restoring his PST file (in my documents/outlook).
The restored files contains the calendar, tasks but not the contacts.
I tried restoring several copies but the contacts are all missing (I then open the restored PST file in Outlook)

Hi,
Please switch to another conatct view, such as List view to check if we can see the missing contacts.
If we click To button in a new message window, can you see the contacts?
Please also check the contacts from OWA and see if we can find the missing contacts.
Did the user have a backup copy of the Outlook pst file? If so, we can try to restore the contacts from the backup file. See:
http://email.about.com/od/outlooktips/qt/Restore_Outlook_Mail_Contacts_and_Other_Data_from_a_Backup.htm
In addition, please make sure the Outlook Address Book service is added to the profile, see:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/contactsinaddressbook.htm
Hope this helps.

  • Restore exchange 2010 mailbox from database and restore the mailbox to pst file

    Hello,
    I'm running exchange 2010Sp2 rollup5 ver2, the mailbox database in question is in a DAG.  The databases are being backed up by commvault.
    So, I received a request to restore a couple mailboxes from 10 days ago and export the mailbox to PST file for archiving.
    How would you go about the restore.  I'm thinking the database needs to be offline, so I don't mistakenly overwrite my production databases.
    Where should backup guy restore the database/log file (completely separate server from my mailbox servers?)
    Once database/logs are restored, what is the procedure to make the mailboxes visible
    Once the mailboxes are visible, what is best way to restore one to a PST file?
    thanks in advance for all your help.

    Hi
    For DB Restores with commvault you have to reed the product documantation.
    The Database must not be offline.
    I would recommend to try the following steps:
    1. Create Recovery DB on Exchange

  • .pst file disappeared on compaq back up and restore

    Hi,
    Tech support at Compaq had me do a full back up and resore using the compaq tools found with the F11 key at startup.  After my restore was complete, I reloaded microsoft office and specifically microsoft outlook, but I cannot located my .pst file to get back all of my emails from the last 3 years.  The correct file path should be
     C:/users/name of user/appdata/local/microsoft/outlook...but nothing there except a small archive .pst file.   I was told by tech support that I was backing up EVERYTHING (all boxes were checked), but this file is no where to be found.  I have searched everywhere, I have even hooked up my external drive to another computer and searched it.  I also restored the data to another computer and searched again for the .pst file and nothing.  There are older .pst files there and the small archive file, but my main file is completely missing.  Could it have been corrupted in some way and therefore was not backed up?  If this was the case, would I not have seen an error message?  Short of taking my computer to a data recovery lab (which may not even be successful since the computer was restored), can anyone think of any way to recover my .pst file?  I've done all kinds of system searches for it and nothing shows up.   I'm desperate!!!

    Hi,
    I do understand your point...
    Even though is seems there is not much I can do for you, I may have a suggestion for you.
    Before you go and spend $950 for data recovery, there is something you might want to try.
    There are plenty of recovery tools you can try to recover your .pst file but you have to be careful and don't write any more files on your disk until you get the one(s) you want!
    What I would do is to put this disk as one external one then try recovery tools on an other computer.
    Doing it this way will prevent windows (and other apps) from writing files onto the disk.
    Basically, a file is (very quickly) made of two different things:
    - your data
    - a "fence" around it to allow the system to use it and prevent it from writing new info over it.
    When you erase (or quick format a disk), you only remove the fence around your file telling the system it can write new info at the very same place.
    Unless new data is written, recovery tools will read the entire disk for patterns and try to save them in a different place writing at the say time a "new fence" around them.
    That is the chance you have to recover your files.
    One tool that did a good job for me is http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/
    Another point, you can move your pst file(s) in a more convenient location if you want to and make sure it won't be stored in an invisible folder. As an example, you can create an Outlook folder within the my documents folder on the desktop and store your pst file there.
    Hope it can help you.

  • Restore Big Outlook PST File

    I have been facing issues whenever try to restore big PST file. First PST file was 33GB and the second PST file was 16GB (both are from different users). My questions:
    1. Is there any limit of PST that outlook can actually restore ?
    2. If the current PST file is large as mentioned above. What should I do in order to successfully migrate it from one machine to another ?
    Looking forward to hearing from you.

    If you want restore big or large pst file without third party tool, the you can try scanpst.exe…

  • How can I enable iTunes Sync to move deleted to the Trash in Outlook instead of directly deleting from my PST file?

    I use several Apple Devices: iPhone 3GS (yes, archaic), iPhone 4S, iPad, and iPad 2 for personal, and work.
    I use iTunes with MS Outlook 2010 to store all my information (e-mail, contacts, calendar, notes, etc).
    When any information changes, it is updated throughout my devices. There has been a time or two when I have accidently deleted information. I want to make sure that I can undelete the information at those times.
    When I 'Allow' iTunes to delete the information, it does not move to Trash in Outlook and instead it removes it completely from Outlook. This removes any possibility to restore the infomation at a future date if the need arises.
    This is a very important function which I miss, granular notification of every change that will take place and the ability to stop each change; when I used Blackberry Desktop with my Torch.
    Does anyone have any idea how to resolve the issu? My work around, currently, is to copy the existing PST file to a different locaion. Then, if I need to restore, I would just open the PST file and copy the item(s) back into the working PST file. This is really quite cumbesome.
    Thanks for any help you can provide.

    If you Control click on the iPhoto Library, you'll see a list of folders - one named "Masters". Inside of this folder are all of your original, high-res photos. You can copy them to other folders if you like.
    You can't delete iPhoto pics without deleting the ones in the iPhoto Library.
    You can copy all of your Masters pics out of the Library, ensuring that you won't forget any.
    I don't know of anyway to determine if there are duplicate photos - most (if not all) have a unique name assigned.
    Good luck,

  • Can a PST file be treated as a lawsuit evidence ?

    My company is having a lawsuit and asked to provide communication log  which can only be found in an email of our employee's.  This email has been downloaded to the local MS outlook 2007 and deleted on the server. But the judge doesn't accept
    the email as evidence, because he  suspects that the PST file has been tampered with. He accepts an email as evidence only when he sees it via web mail on the email server.  We are using a third party email service vender (not exchange)
    and they are not able to recover the email because it was too old ( in 2012 ).  I, as an IT engineer, have never heard that a PST file can be tampered with.  Am I right ? If yes, can you illustrate the reason as explict as possible ? Thanks
    a million!

    Hey Benny Zhao,
    Considering your situation, I wouldfirst of all like to bring into your notice that a PST file CAN be tampered with. There are plenty of ways to do so(most of which cost no penny at all and are absolutely easy) and I have explained some of them briefly below,
    to justify the same. Have a look:
    1. A suspect can easily modify Outlook Data File contents (preferably, emails) by firstly importing the evidentiary PST file on Outlook and then tamper with it by deleting messages/folders permanently that store crucial information leading
    to suspect(s).
    2.Someone with a good understanding of hexadecimal values and an internet connection can make changes to a PST file, especially the header, to tamper with it. This can be done using a hex editor which is available online very easy and absolutely
    free of cost too.
    3.Similar to a hex editor, there are plenty of third party freeware/shareware utilities that claim to help you view or modify PST file contents as per your requirement at a mere investment.
    So, by this we come to a conclusion that it is not rocket science to play around with evidences stored in a PST file and even someone with least possible technical know how can do it. In your situation, losing all the messages from the server, but having
    a copy of the same in a PST file on the local machine, may not prove so helpful to testify the genuineness of evidences that it stores.
    However, you can proceed to a different level of investigating emails where they are monitored every time to know the activities that has been performed on them, in ways whatsoever.
    But as far as your situation is concerned, the complete denial of PST as the sole source of evidence may seem prevalent if presented without facts that justify the statement. In support of the same, you can go for an Email Forensic Examination tool. And
    MailXaminer is one that I am aware of and shall suit your condition too. The application is permitted and absolutely admissible in the court of law and can help you out.
    Even if evidence has been tampered, like say, emails are deleted (hard deleted), the tool can restore them back – in the same folder and with the original attributes. To distinguish them easily amongst all the other emails present in the PST file, it highlights
    them with RED color.
    I would suggest you use the tool to prove your point that PST file IS a legally a probative set of evidence.
    Thanks & Regards

  • How to Repair Database .pst file of MS Outlook?

    I am unable to open my Outlook file due to corruption how to repair database .pst file of MS outlook. I was using Microsoft Outlook 2007 from last 2 years and everything is going well. But suddenly I have got an error message “outlook data file cannot
    be accessed ” while accessing PST file. It was also suggested me to run scanpst.exe tool. I had tried to repair my inaccessible PST file many times with the help of Inbox repair tool.  But this utility is unable to solve my issue, please suggest me how
    can I repair my corrupted database.pst file without losing any information. Is there any way to restore all information from inaccessible PST file into new PST file to continue working as previously?

    Hi,
    My first recommendation is Scanpst.exe from Microsoft, but since you mentioned it didn't fix the issue, you can also try some 3rd-party tools to fix the data file. Please remember to keep a backup before performing any actions on the file.
    In case the issue was caused by the corrupted profile, you can also create a new profile and setup an account in Outlook, check if you can open the .pst file.

  • Corrupted .pst files due to mistakenly trying to open them with Adobe Reader

    This is a second post re the same problem, as I previously got only one response (from B. Alheit), which asked me to identify my operating system. I am beyond desperate to get this problem fixed.
    As described previously (S Giraffe - 11/14), I was about to apply an email recovery program to some .pst files when, somehow (late at night/tired), I inadvertently clicked "Open with Adobe Reader." Then the disaster! The Adobe Reader logo appeared on the .pst file's icon - and also on every other .pst file in my Documents folder. When I tried to open them I got the following error message:
    "Adobe Reader could not open 'Outlook (_).pst' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged."
    I went back to my exernal hard drive to again decompress the original backup files, but these, too, all had the Adobe Reader logo on their icons and brought the same error message. How could trying to open ONE .pst file with Adobe Reader have affected every other .pst file on my C drive and in my external hard drive???
    I need to recover my emails and contacts! Can anyone tell me anything that would enable me to correct whatever Adobe Reader did to my .pst files and get them back to their former state. I would be immensely appreciative.

    Adobe Reader didn't "do" anything to your PST file, but you probably changed the file association by leaving "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" checked.
    What you need to do is to reset the file association from Adobe Reader, and change it e.g. to SCANPST.EXE
    If you have a recent system restore point (before the file association changed), restore that save point.  If not, you need to change it manually (either in the registry, or by opening the PST file with SCANPST.EXE, and again check "Always use the selected program...".

  • In what versions are contacts stored in PST file?

    Currently doing migrations to the Cloud from multiple exchange servers. How are contacts and autocomplete lists stored in the different 2003/2007/2010/2013 versions?
    If I remember correctly I need to export contacts from Outlook 2003 and also the .n2k files but not in newer versions?

    If you are migrating from an Exchange server, then the Contacts are stored within the Exchange database and not in pst-files.
    Depending on the platform you are migrating to and the amount of users, I would really avoid migrating via Outlook but do it server-based as much as possible.
    The nk2-file is merely a cache of recently used addresses which is no longer used in Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013.
    See:
    Import contacts from an nk2-file
    In Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013, this cache is being stored within the mailbox itself but also extracted in the RoamCache folder.

    Hello,
           Details u needed.
    SUMMARY
    The Fixmapi.exe tool is included with Internet Explorer 5 & above to detect and aid in resolving conflicts with Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) files that may affect your ability to send and receive mail and faxes from other programs.
    FixMAPI ( What Exactly it does ?).....
    Makes a backup copy of the current copy of mapi32.dll on the client computer, and restores mapi32.dll with the MAPI stub library, mapistub.dll.
    Quick Info
    Exported by:
    mapistub.dll
    Called by:
    Client
    Implemented by:
    Windows
    DWORD STDAPICALLTYPE FixMAPI(void);
    Return Values
    If the function succeeds, the return value is a non-zero value.
    If the function fails, the return value is zero. To get extended error information, call the Microsoft Platform Software Development Kit (SDK) function, GetLastError.
    Remarks
    FixMAPI does not replace the current mapi32.dll file if the file is marked as read-only.
    FixMAPI does not replace the current mapi32.dll if Microsoft Exchange Server is installed on the computer.
    When FixMAPI makes a backup copy of the current copy of mapi32.dll on the computer, it assigns the backup copy a name different from "mapi32.dll". It then directs subsequent calls intended for that assembly to the backup copy

  • PST Files freezing when trying to connect to them

    We are having a major issue with our .PST files.   We are using Configuration Manager 2012 to deploy a new Windows 7 x86 image to all of our machines.   The OSD works and it installs Windows 7 and many apps, one of which is Office 2010.
    Once we have a new image we then engage the end user who uses that machine.  We restore some of their data and we reattach their Outlook to their .PST file(s) which we store on their U: drive.  At our company the HOME DRIVE is always U:
    When we try to load the .PST file from the U: drive it will freeze and locks up the system.  Nothing works to kill the process either.  Not TaskMan not even TaskKill from a command line.  We have to Hard Boot the system.
    But if we copy the .PST file locally and try to attach to it everything works perfect.  No issues.
    And the really difficult part is the U: drive and freezing is inconsistent.  Some users can load up their .PST from the U: drive and some can't.  And the size of the .PST file does not seem to matter either.  some can open a 5GB file while
    others freeze on a 400MB file.
    We have upgraded machines to Office 2010 SP2 and that did not fix the issue.
    What would cause this behavior?  It is a show stopper and I have to resolve this ASAP so any help would be awesome!!

    Hi,
    What kind of drive are we talking about here? Is U: drive a shared network drive?
    One thing you should note is PST files were never designed to be a network based solution. Using Pst file over the network might cause unexpected issues.

  • Does SES Index Personal Folders (.pst) Files?

    Does SES have the ability to index .pst files, either as part of a file content source or an email content source?
    If SES does not natively index .pst files, are they any plans to support this in SES versions?

    Hey JRV,
    we use DFSr and folder redirection and thats part of the prob! If we put all PST files to My Doc's, then DFSr is pretty much useless as it tries to replicate 8GB+ pst files.
    So the idea is to move them to a separate server(s) entirely. We are looking at a Vault solution, (Symantec), however this won't happen in the near future. By moving them to a separate server,
    outside of the user profile, we 'fix' DFSr and have an easily identifiable central location for PST files.
    So the script above works great insofar as it will move all connected archives to a specified location. You’re spot on as regards breaking it down into smaller parts. We’re not going to worry about user PST files that are not connected,
    just back them up to tape and restore as requested. (I hate PST files!)
    I have put echo’s into the script.. but I can’t figure out how to update a value in the array if the file names are the same.
    It reads all data files and add’s them to the array.
    What I’m trying to add is “if a file with the same name is connected then add it to the array with 1_ at the start of the file name. If further files are connected with same file name then continue to add to array with 2_, 3_, 4_, etc”.
    I know I’m asking a lot here.. but really struggling with this!
    For Each objFolder In objNS.Session.Folders 'all data files in outlook
     if not isEmpty(GetPSTPath(objFolder.storeid)) then 'filter out empty items
      'wscript.echo objFolder
      pstPath = GetPSTPath(objFolder.storeid) 'returns the PST file path in text
      redim preserve pstArray(counter)
      pstArray(counter) = pstPath
      counter = counter + 1
      pstInfo.add pstPath,objFolder
      errorDisplay ("Read Data Store")
     End If
    Next
    Thanks!

  • How can I convert an outlook pst file to mac mail without using a windows based computer

    I recently bought the new iMac as my older Windows based computer crashed with a bad motherboard.  I have been trying to find a way to convert Outlook 2007 pst files to Mac Mail without the need to use a Windows based computer since all I have now is a Mac.  I have the copies of the pst files on my Mac, so I am looking for the most efficient way to convert them to the format that I can then open them in the Mac Mail.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi - thanks for the instructions but where do you get the option for Quicktime. If I do File - Export I only get the options for File name, place and size but no option that allows to select quicktime:-(
    Have you got any more tips?

  • Can not restore data files from backup set

    I am trying to restore Server A's backup data to Server B (they are all oracle11g) using rman. The restore commands is below:
    rman target /;
    shutdown immediate;
    startup nomount;
    restore controlfile from '/usr/local/oracle/backup/20100418/ctl_xxx'
    alter database mount;
    catalog start with '/usr/local/oracle/backup/20100418/';
    restore database;
    recover database;
    alter database open resetlogs;
    For the first time, it works. But when i tried to restore another backup data by the same way:
    rman target /;
    shutdown immediate;
    startup nomount;
    restore controlfile from '/usr/local/oracle/backup/20100425/ctl_xxx'
    alter database mount;
    catalog start with '/usr/local/oracle/backup/20100425/';
    restore database;
    recover database;
    alter database open resetlogs;
    The second time, i found that rman restore the old backup data, which means that it restore the data file under '/usr/local/oracle/backup/20100418/' instead of '/usr/local/oracle/backup/20100425/'.
    So I run 'list backup of database summary' to see the backup set lists in control file.
