Resume function

New to DVD 4 and struggling to understand the scripts functions and despite reading as much info as poss in manual and on the web I still cannot figure out how to programme a script to get the resume button to bring the viewer back to where the main feature left off playing. Can anyone be bothered to explain in terms of one syllable? (I know it has been gone over ad infinitum, sorry!)Be even better if it was possible to send a screen shot of the commands in the script inspector. Thanks anyway.

Hi - welcome to the discussions!
The resume function is pretty simple as scripts go, but it is important to know why you need to use it in a script, since a lot of resume information is automatically stored and can be actioned in different ways.
For example, playing a track and pressing the menu button takes you to a menu. Pressing it again takes you back to the track - a resume.
Resume info is only stored if a track has played. If you go from a track to a menu, then on to another or subsequent menus, pressing resume (or menu) will take you back to the track again, even if it was in a different part of the DVD.
Similarly, if the track had finished playing, the resume function can give different results, some of which are unpredictable, depending on player functionality. You can resume back to the beginning of the track, to the end jump (and hence a menu) or nothing will happen.
So, knowing these things, the resume function in a script is easy to implement. You create a script, which gives you a single line (with NOP in it) in the script editor. Click on that line and look in the property inspector. The drop down list at the top lets you set different commands, one of which is the word 'Resume'.
If you save this script, with just one line, and point a menu button at it, then the disc will look for the resume information and attempt to complete the resume function.
So - why do you need to script this? Is any of the automated functionality going to be of use?

IPod Classic 120gb resume function

I've recently purchased a 120gb iPod classic. It does something no other iPod I've owned does, and it's driving me nuts and I want to shut it off, but don't know how.
If I skip to the next track in a playlist, the next time the song that I skipped comes on (or I select it), it resumes the song from the point at which I skipped it last time! It's starting songs half way through, and is doing this for just about every song in some playlists. I'm getting the tail end of songs, songs starting 10 seconds in...
How do I turn off this resume function, or at least clear it between listens?

Are you sure it only happens on the iPod? iTunes has a option to "remember playback positon" which can be set independently for each track. This option should also control how the iPod behaves. I tend to set it to Yes for anything longer than 10 mins and all my podcasts & audiobooks. If you've managed to get too many tracks with the option in iTunes just set things the way you'd like them and sync/reload your iPod. Otherwise try reseting or restoring the iPod.

Does the Resume Function work in an Aggregator Project?

I hope this is a simple yes or no question. If I use the aggregator to publish several SWF's, will i be able to use the resume function that is built into Captivate's TOC settings?

In my experience no it doesn't. The Self-paced Learning bookmarking is more designed for single projects, not aggregated projects.

'Resume' function (buttons over video / white rabbit)

The resume function takes me back to the last chapter marker passed in the track I was viewing previously. Is it supposed to work like that? I thought it would take me bak to the last moment viewed (give or take several frames).
I've got a video track, I use buttons over video to jump to a menu with video background. When the menu times out I run a script that just states 'resume', but it will only go to the last chapter marker passed. Some of my white rabbit videos are several minutes long so that's not very helpful.
From what I understand you can only resume from a menu?
I've had another look at The Matrix and note that after a white rabbit it always returns to exactly the same point in the main movie as though there were a chapter marker there... but no chapter marker exists at those points so what did the authors of the Matrix DVD use to target that return point?

After trying all sorts of combinations to get 'resume' working, all I can imagine is it's not properly implimented in DVDSP or it's not properly supported by players.
A button on a menu with a target or 'resume' should according to the DVDSP manuals return to the point the user was at in a track when the menu was launched (see quote below).
I've tested on 3 hardware players as well as a PC player and Apple's own DVD player. Only a sony DVD recorder resumed to the correct place in the video track. The only other possibility I can imagine is that the buttons over video are in some way causing the problem when resuming? I noticed when the sony did resume to the correct point the subtitle stream being used for the buttons over video was no longer visible (even though a prescript on the track was forcing them to show)

Will adding media frequently harm battery? / Resume function for

I download several podcasts and add them to my player daily, consequently my player is plugged-in and, in-effect, charging for short periods several times a day. I'm wondering if this will cause any problems with the battery. I know the memory-effect is not supposed to be a problem anymore, but I've also read that there are a limited number of charge cycles and I wonder if I'm using them up every time I hook it up to add a podcast, I'm also?wondering how this will effect the accuracy of my battery meter.
I guess a solution to this problem would be to put them on an SD card and play them from the card.
I would love to do this?except for the fact?that there is NO BOOKMARKING, or even a RESUME function available and they are about 2 hrs. long! This leads me to my?second question which is: If they can't integrate the SD card into the main memory, couldn't the at least add a Bookmark or Resume function. It's pretty-much useless as is!

?Don't worry about the number of charge cycles. Lithium ion batteries are dying over time no matter how many times they are charged. I wish Creative would start making mp3 players that use AA batteries, or else make some players that use a common size removable lithium ion battery. Using replaceable batteries would give Creative an advantage over other brands, as there are many users who want a player that uses replaceable batteries. Cell phones and digital cameras use replaceable batteries. Why don't mp3 players use them?

Impossible to deactivate the Resume function

When i'm trying to deactivate the resume function in Lion, it not work, in fact when i'm going to open the General Preferences panel i can see that the check-box on the "resume function" it's still checked.
There's anyone that has the same issue??

Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.

How to restore resume function on Muvo TX

I use my Muvo TX FM to listen to audio books. It used to be that when I stopped at any point and turned it off, it would resume again at the same point. Suddenly, this is no longer the case -- if I turn it off and back on again, it starts playing from the beginning of the file. I don't know what happened. How can I fix it's Can't find any information in the user's manual. Thanks.

Did you shut off while playing the MP3. I think when you switch to radio-mode and turn off, it does not store the position right, but I might be wrong.
If the function simply does not work as normal, I guess you should download the latest firmware and install it, or if you already use the latest firmware, you should run that update again to reset the firmware (it is the same procedure, but the same version and not an update then).

And if it doesn't, you should try the firmware-update again, this time using the "format data area"-option.
If it still does not work, you should think about the files you are playing compared to the ones you used when the option worked. Maybe they are too large or have the wrong format. It would be good to try a normal mp3-file with 28 or 92 kbit and 44khz, too.

Audio Book Resume Function

When playing audio books the nano does not resume at the spot where I stopped. Is there some type of setting adjustment I should make?

put an empty midi track under the audio trak yor are trying to process. someties the midi track goes under the audio track you just converted, try dragging the aduio up/down to an adjacent empty track.. the midi track will be there. by fooling around with the levels, its fairly easy to create a replacement drum track. Use transform function to move all the midi notes to the proper trigger note you want.. Those will often end up on several different pitchs,
once you get used to it, it is a very fast way to replace drum notes. it takes a little while, depending on length, and you will see a 'count down list' of notes to process.

Bypass "Resume" function of a DVD Player?

I've searched a couple of topics on this and hoping this is not a duplicate post.
I have a DVD project in which the intro movie MUST be played first 100% of the time the DVD is inserted into a set top player (PC as well but not a deal breaker). I understand the nature of most players these days allowing the disc to "resume" from where it left off if the disc is not STOPPED rather simply ejected and then inserted back into the player.
I've found info on prioritizing the VTS order but that technique did not seem to work or I may have not understood how to wire it correctly.
Any insight on forcing (using first play and other techniques) a movie to always trigger on DVD insert would be greatly appreciated.

What you could try is to write a short script that sets a value in a GPRM, and allow an item to play only if that value is there. The GPRMs get cleared when a disc is ejected, so the resume feature may well have remembered where the disc was, but it shouldn't retain the GPRM settings.
However, this will definitely not work if the player is retaining the resume info and the user left the disc during a track... and gets sent back to that point in the track.
What I was thinking was that you could attach a script to every element of the project, with a script set as first play:

Jump Menu1 //assuming menu1 is the fist thing you want users to see.
Now, whenever you go on from there to any element on the disc you can go to a script instead which looks to see if the value is in GPRM1. If not, send them to menu1, or whatever the first item should be. SO, a script would look like this:
Jump Track1 if (GPRM0 = 1)
Jump Script1 // the 'first play' script above
You would need to do this for every menu and track, etc, changing the first line appropriately. However, if you resume in the middle of a track the script would be bypassed and the playback would continue from there. It would only go back to 'first play' when the track end jump takes place and the appropriate script kicks in before you get to anywhere. You may even need to do it for menu and title calls (easy enough, set a script to do the same job as above, but put it in place for menu calls, etc)
Doing this is at best excruciatingly tedious (particularly on anything reasonably complex), and at worst totally ineffective. I am not sure it will be worth the effort as it can't be guaranteed to work all of the time, if at all.

Resume function in DVDSP perfect, unless no video has been played yet

I'm trying to use the Resume built in DVDSP 4(1.2.). It;s perfect, saves hassling with scripts as I have a play all menu and chapter buttons menu. Except, when the viewer hasn't played any video at all, it goes directly to the setup menu and clikc 'resume'. Then the player gets stuck, because there's nothing to go back to. So, is the only solution scripting? Or could I place a .5 second black video that playes as first play? But then resume would go back to that? Any suggestions?

.5 second black video as a first play is an old and highly recommended trick of all Hollywood DVD authors. This is a DVD-Spec thing. You can only resume to a video that has already played.

Updating iPod to 2.2 - Can't get iTunes to Resume download

Hi.
I have tried numerous times to download the new Ipod Touch firmware using my dial-up connection. As the firmware is over 250MB I have to Stop/Resume my Internet connection a few times (my dial-up has a 10hr limit). Unfortunately, after downloading around 65MB I had to restart the Internet connection again only to find iTunes Resume function not wqrking. On looking for the partial download file it had been deleted. I tried again using only a small download (128K), Stopped, then Resumed. Same thing. Is iTunes Resume function broken?
I have tried the new iTunes v802 and the previous v8. Same on both. All other areas of iTunes are working well.

I've also been trying to download the latest firmware for my iPod touch on a dodgy wireless broadband connection that keeps dropping out (I'm looking at you Virgin).
Every time the connection is reset the download starts again from the beginning. Why? When I download a movie from the iTunes store and the connection is interrupted it just starts again where it left off. Why can't this happen with firmware updates?
Can I download the updates without using iTunes?

First post here! I have had a search of the forums and can't find an answer to a) whether I can do this and b) how to!
I am using Captivate 5.5 with Moodle as my LMS. I want to create a fairly large project where users work their way around a virtual 'assault course' (represented by images etc) answering questions at various stages. However, they will not complete the whole assault course (and hence the whole quiz) in one go - so I want them to be able to stop and come back to the quiz again several days later and be able to resume from where they left off - INCLUDING retaining the score they have achieved so far (so if they had got 5 points the first time they accessed the project, they would start at 5 points and add to that on their second attempt). I know it's easy to make them resume from the slide they finished on, but is it possible for their score to be resumed as well?
Thanks for any advice - I don't want to get too deep into building it if I won't be able to use the scores the way I want!

Users sometimes experience issues with Captivate courses in LMS where Resume Data bookmarking is used. Whether resuming works flawlessly or not seems to depend on the particular LMS to some extent.
What has happened in some cases is that when the user tries to resume the course after initially closing it down, they get stuck on the loading screen.
I would recommend you build a quick prototype course with several interactions of different types and test the Resume functionality with your chosen LMS. If everything works as expected, go for it.
EDIT: One more thing, make sure you get several different users from your organisation to test it with any different types of web browser that might be used. Especially things like IE7 to IE9 and Firefox. Don't assume everyone will have the same experience you do.

After the most recent firefox update I lost the search function in hotmail

After the most recent upgrade for Firefox the search function in my Hotmail account no longer works. When I try to search through my email for a specific item, I get a message, "It looks like there's a problem with Windows Live Hotmail right now. It should be fixed soon, so please try again in a few minutes. Sorry for the inconvenience."
Also, when I load up my Hotmail account it pretty much seems to take over my browser. If I follow a link from an email to another website, I will often be pulled back to Hotmail...with or without a "hang" and I will get the "Warning: Unresponsive Script" message. It appears to be related to the ad bar that runs on the right side of the Hotmail page. It gets worse if I have more than two tabs open.
I have a similar experience with Facebook. It will often pull me back if I go to another tab. The "Warning: Unresponsive Script" message will come up. often after a considerable "hang" delay. This also can happen if I am participating in a thread. Often, when I am typing it will hang, sometimes for several minutes before my cursor resumes functionality. It can take a very long time to complete even one paragraph.

Set Safari 5.1 startup behavior to not resume

Is there any way to configure the startup behavior in Safari 5.1 (7534.48.3) on Lion 10.7? It now always resumes whatever was running when I quit it. I would like to have it start on "Top Sites", but to do so now, I must navigate back there before I quit. Dumb.

While I do not know of a preference to turn this off just for Safari.. You can close Safari by pressing Option + Command + Q to close Safari and it will NOT remember the last state.
This is how I close Safari most of the time now, since upgrading to 10.7.
I think the Resume function will be great for most other apps, just wish there was a more granular control of where it applies and where it does not.

Help to unload function

I have a video background wherefrom I load another swf through a build in pop up. I have a button in the loaded swf from where I need the popup to unload and go back to the video background. Im not very experienced in flash and haven't build this myself so im a little lost. underneath is first the code which is in my video background and then the code in my loaded swf. hope someone can help. The highlighted bits is the ones where i have attempted to have the loaded swf to unload

i don't use shadowbox but it looks like you're using javascript to open that popup so you'll need to use javascript to close it.   take a chance and try:
