Retina 15'' interface lagging in higher resolution

Hello, I have a macbook pro retina 15'' I bought it a month ago, I have a problem when I switch to higher resolution (i.e. 1920px) the interface lags a bit... for example when switching from a virtual desktop to another using the magic mouse. Do you have any solution?

  • Performance Lag for higher resolution

I have developed a touch based flash application with a resolution of 5120x1440.
There is performance lag in two areas.
    1) FPS is low (below 33) and Graphic lag is high (sometimes hitting > 80 ms)
    2) Touch response is slow (using touchlib)
I'm using a PC of the following specs.
    CPU: Intel i7-4770 3.4GHz
    RAM: Kingston 8GB
    Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87X-OC
    GPU: 4x Gigabyte Geforce GT630 2GB
    PSU: 1000W
Currently, the GPU Load is hitting at most 20% and the CPU usage is most of time below 50%. If I keep invoking the touch events, the app will ocassionally freeze and GPU Load drops to 0% for a while before coming back to normal and app becomes responsive again.
Is there a hardware compatilbility issue? Is there any way to improve on the touch responsiveness?
    Thanks...

If the computer recognized the three monitors as three
monitors, and not one really wide monitor, then you could run three
full screen flash programs at the same time, one on each screen,
also syncing them with localConnection. It could be pretty easy to
sync content if you created a movie clip to hold all your animation
(the movie clip can be 4080 px wide) and then animated everything
so that a very wide clip had the entire animation. Then use a stage
with a width of 1360 and move this clip to x positions 0, -1360,
and -2720, each time saving the movie and publishing. If you have
one that sends localConnection cues to the others, then it should
be able to sync things up.
This is much easier said than done of course, as I dunno what
kind of content you're running, audio, video, etc. Plus, I think
you're dealing with a situation where you have a computer that sees
one big screen and not 3 smaller ones, so the second solution might
    not work.
You could try a similar thing and drop all of them in a
Director shell, which will do 4080 pixels wide, and use the same
technique, but that could be a big performance hit, and it adds
    another (expensive) pieces of software.

  • Mplayer lags at high resolutions

Setup information: Up-to-date Arch x86_64, Nvidia 8800GT with up-to-date closed source drivers, E6750 @ 3.2 GHz, Asus Xonar DX (which I only mention because in the outputs below you'll see "AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 128.0 kbit/8.33% (ratio: 16000->192000)", and this sound card does support 192kHz audio).
I recently bought a new monitor, which change my setup from one 1280x1024 screen and one 1024x768 screen to one 1920x1200 screen and one 1280x1024 screen, and now when I try to play content fullscreened it lags much more than it did before.  I used to be able to watch h.264 encoded 720p content fullscreened on my larger monitor, but now It's slower even in a window than it used to be fullscreen.  And fullscreened it's unbearably slow, unless I use -vo gl2 in which case it is slightly less but still glitchy and jumpy.  Normally I use -vo xv, and I tried to use -vo xvidix but I wasn't able to get that to work at all.  I even went so far as to buy CoreAVC Pro and was able to get that to work with mplayer, but it doesn't make anything better.
Here is my mplayer config file:

Note that the second one lags less and doesn't seem to vary depending on whether I have it fullscreened or not, whereas the former looks about the same in a window as -vo gl2 but fullscreened skips significantly more.
If necessary I can post more verbose output non-CoreAVC decodes, but I do not think that is the problem as it only skips more when I don't use -vc coreserve.
I have also tried viewing the file with VLC, which does not fare any better.
I can't help but think I should be able to fix this problem by modifying the configuration, as it used to work much better at the lower resolution, and when I'm in windows playing this with CCCP and MPC-HC it doesn't skip at all, fullscreened or otherwise.  Does anyone see anything that could possibly be the problem?

I just rebooted into linux, updated everything, configured the framebuffer and rebooted.  I had it in 1920x1200x32 with vesa, and when I tried to play the same video with mplayer in the framebuffer two noticeable things happened: 1) the video only took up the upper left corner and I could not maximze it to the full screen size, and 2) it still lagged.
I backed up my xorg.conf and reran nvidia-xconfig, which seems to have changed nothing... it still lags no matter what vo I use.  Here is my xorg.conf:

EDIT: I just tried switching from twinview to xinerama with nvidia-settings (just a GUI xorg.conf configurator that comes with nvidia drivers) and now things play FINE when I use -vo gl2.  However, compositing no longer works, and things look all-around cruddier.  So I think the problem here is twinview...  That makes me pessimistic about ever seeing improvement...
EDIT2: I think I just solved the problem.  All I did was enable "Sync to VBlank" in the nvidia-settings configuration menus "X ServerXVideo Settings" and "OpenGL Settings".  Now when I run with compiz DISABLED, things work fine.  If compiz is running, however, it runs as cruddily as before, with all the tearing.  This is not a huge issue however, as I am fine with disabling compiz whenever I want to watch HD content.  I believe the key point here was that I needed OpenGL to sync to vblank, and XGL does not have this option (as far as I am aware), so it will not work as well when I am using compiz.

  • How can I open Adobe Bridge CS6 in high resolution on my MacBook Pro Retina display?

How can I open Adobe Bridge CS6 in high resolution on my MacBook Pro Retina display? When I click Get Info, the "Open in Low Resolution" box is marked and locked. How can I unmark this box? I currently run 10.9.1. I can open Adobe Photoshop CS6 in high resolution without any problem. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There is no such thing. In CS6 only PS itself is Retina compatible. You would have to use CC for full Retina support.

InDesign CS6 is not optimized for retina displays. You’ll need to move to Creative Cloud for retina compatibility.

  • AIR for iOS: Severe performance drop using "high resolution" published app on retina iPhone

I have created a very simple test app the simply draws a line from the previous to the current mouse/touch position after MOUSE_MOVE is detected. I published the app, stage size 320x480, in both "standard" and "high" resolution using AIR for iOS and added each to two different iPhones, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S. I published again, stage size 640x960 in standard and high resolution and placed on both phones.
    320x640 Flash stage size
    - standard resolution on iPhone 3GS: works as expected, no hitches.
    - high resolution on iPhone 3GS: works as expected
    - standard resolution on iPhone 4S: works as expected
    - high resolution on iPhone 4S: hangs occasionally and predictably for a half second or so once 20-30 points have been added to the drawing. Of the 4 tests at 320x640 this is the only one that displays at high res.
    640x960 Flash stage size
Everything was the same as above. The only test here that diplayed at high res was the high res publish on the iphone 4s as expected. Which showed the same poor performace as above.
Perhaps this has something to do with the upscaled application trying to keep track of mouse position but I'm stumped. Any ideas?

I create an app for kids that draws using MOUSE_MOVE, KidFunKit. It's a retina display high-res app, using AIR 2.6 I got performing issues, after I couple of lines were drawn. Using AIR 3.0, it works nice. Obviously if your frame rate is 60 ... you'll expect lack of performance. You may try Starling Framework based on STAGE3D if you want the most of AS3.

  • Does the higher resolution of the retina display mean smaller text

    Hi,
I have trouble seeing smaller text, and I am wondering if the higher resolution on the 13 inch macbook pro with retinal display will make Safari's menu and fonts or any other applications fonts smaller and therfore harder to read.
I figured a higher resolution means more can fit on a page and therefore everything is smaller.  Not sure though?

In the Displays Preferences, you can choose the actual resolution you want displayed on the monitor. You're correct that a higher resolution will provide more screen real-estate at the expense of everything, including text, being smaller. You can also choose to make everything larger but less will fit on the screen. You just can't have it both ways unless you get a 27" LED display and plug it into the MacBook Pro. Just don't try to carry it around.

  • Enable High Resolution for Retina Screen

Version 11.0.0 downloaded from Creative Cloud on iMac 5K Retina screen (Yosemite). Acrobat Pro opens in Low Resolution - all text.images appears blurred/bitmapped/low resolution.
On looking at the applications info: 'Open in low resolution' is ticked and dimmed, so it can't be changed.
I've seen a couple of hacks to fix this, one of which states you should go into the Contents/info.plist and add <key>NSHighResolutionCapable</key>
    <string>True</string> just before </dict>
I'm not keen to do this, plus sounds like it will be glitchy.
Please would the next update allow high resolution for Retina screens. Thanks.

Big thanks Adobe, a day later, you release 11.0.09 which has fixed this issue.

  • Can AppleScript dialog configured to use high resolution on macbook retina?

I've just got the macbook retina and noticed that script dialogs displays text in low resolution. Is there an configuration parameter that needs to be set to high resolution texts?

There aren't any settings you can make or change for the dialogs from Standard Additions.  I don't know if there is an update planned - some of those look to be pretty old.

  • I have a high resolution display (3200x1800) and a 13" laptop, but my CC-applications have microscopic icons at the point of being useless.

The text based menus are ok, and is the only option that can be configured to a larger size.
But the icons in the CC applications are so tiny that they are practically useless.
Even extended on a separate 24" LCD display the interface icons are too small.
So, having searched a lot on the topic of high resolution displays, the OS will scale an application appropriately if it is designed correctly.
I am running Windows 8.1, and i.e. the applications in the Office pack scale perfectly. Not so strange, perhaps, being MS.
When will CC get this upgrade?
    Kind regards,
    Thomas

Please take a look at: Photoshop CC / Windows 8.1 HiDPI / Retina scaling support at the moment Adobe works with Microsoft to work on scaling for HiDPI devices. See reaply from Chris Cox
"Again, we're continuing to work with Microsoft on the scaling problems in Windows.
We, and they, recognize that the existing attempts to offer scalable UI have serious issues.
And no, we can't commit to a timeframe for a long list of reasons."
So you need some patience as HiDPI is getting more and more popular i assume it will be anytime soon.

  • Forum oddity, w.r.t high resolution screen.

I started a thread on Windows/ Photoshop entitled "CS4 with a high resolution screen". People have replied to this, according to e-mail direct response. However, it is not on the list of forums, and neither does it appear on 'search'.
To repeat: we have a high resolution HP LP 3065 screen, which supports up to 2560 x 1600 pixels. At this resolution, images are still less than print size, but CS4 is essentially unusable because the menu text and other icons do not scale. Does anyone know if it is possible to manage this silly interface to allow the user to see what they are doing? Is there even a visual disability option? Even MS Office 2000 - ten years old - allows "large icons".
If not, I think this is another way in which CS4 is in fact worse than CS3, which (mostly) used the Windows UI and which was therefore considerably more flexible. The screen in question is supported by dual DVI connections to an Nvidia FX3700 card - a CUDA multiprocessor device optimised for 2D images and CAD - and an eight processor, 3 GHz machine. With all of this processor power, CS4 is still much slower than CS3 on a single processor laptop. The paint follows the pen by several centimetres, like early Photoshop on a pre-Pentium processor.

I started this by saying that through an oddity of this forum software, my original thread had vanished from the list. Exactly the same thing happened to this one, which i had to find through searching the forum list. The previous one vanished completely. One appears to get a different list if one comes in via a direct URL or via support > Forums > windows: an .asp error, presumably, but Adobe please note.
Someone asked why use a high res screen. If you work on a large image, you either operate at the pixel level - a plate on a table top if you are at 1020 x 768 and working with a 20 megapixel image - or you shrink the thing down to fit. In the latter case, each pixel that you see is, depending on the native image size, an average of a large number of adjacent pixels. In the case of a 24Meg image and the above screen size, each visible pixel is an average (or however Adobe calculate it) of a bit over 20 pixels from the native image. If you look at 2560 x 1600 you are still seeing a composite, but of a quarter fewer source pixels per point. If you look at the natve image as 'actual pixels', the 'dinner plate' is four time bigger in proportion to that of the SVGA image.
That said, imagine the layers pallet in which one layer has, let's say, a football set against an group of players , P/shop users will expect to see a black blob representing its position in the layer. At high resolution, however, the blob is represented on the screen by a patch that is smaller than a full stop on a page of type, and essentially invisible from 150 cm from the screen. Thus: squint, lean forward, mutter angrily.
Why can one not set the icons and the ephemeral facilities such as the layers pallet to be any size you want? It is really very silly.

  • Photoshop CC and Audition CC is not compatible with the high resolution and small screen that my computer have.

Hello everyone. Recently I bought the New Razer Blade (2014). It has a high resolution of 3200 x 1800 and a screen size of 14 inch. It is that I downloaded the Photoshop CC that I realize that the words are so small it is actually causing a problem for the users. I searched online for helps and learned that the only way to change this is to wait for the developers of the Photoshop CC to make and update to make it compatible. The source of this idea is from a guy have the same computer and the same problem. He updated his Lightroom and the interface ungraded into one that he can use with ease and he hopes that the Adobe company will update Photoshop CC also and fix the resolution problem too. I thought that after another update, Photoshop CC will have it visual update too. However, the last update from a few days ago didn't solve this problem. I wonder if The Adobe company knows about this problem and that's the main reason I'm starting a discussion on this topic. The same goes to the Audition CC and the Premiere Pro CC. These 3 are the most important tools for my and this computer is the only good one that I can have right now. I have tried lowering my resolution but everything else became difficult to use. If I'm using the Photoshop CC, I of course wouldn't want to use a resolution that is too low to edit my pictures.
This is my problem and I wish someone can do something about the visual updates of Photoshop, Audition, and Premiere Pro so that they are compatible with the New Razer Blade (2014) 14 inch screen. Just like Lightroom.

    Hi,
The video features for Windows 32 bit systems are no longer supported starting with Photoshop CC (14.0).
    Sorry,

  • Are There Any Advantages To High Resolution Displays?

I am looking to buy a new 17 inch MacBook Pro at the end of this month and seeking practical advice on configuration options I should choose.
I am curious about what other people think of the advantages and disadvantages of the high resolution displays. Perhaps it is just a personal preference on the part of different users but non-graphics users I have talked to who have used the high res screens say they don't like them and why but I have yet to talk to any artists who have used them and whether artists find real advantages. My feeling is that it would be good to be able to fit a larger (more pixels) image on the screen or is it better to just leave high res screens to those who work with high definition video/animation?
My usage of the computer is largely in Photoshop and other graphics programs like Painter, and web design.

Just to be clear, though, reducing the resolution of an LCD can have a negative effect on image quality. LCDs have an optimal "native" resolution and setting the resolution below that native level results in a poorer quality image.
Leopard claims "resolution independence" - I have not tried it yet, but if you read the description of this feature, you will note that it applies to the user interface elements. Granted, that's often what you notice the most (i.e. the problem with reducing the resolution below native for an LCD is that the text in Finder, all of the menu bar items, etc., looks "fuzzy"). By appropriately scaling the UI elements, Leopard overcomes the limitation. But the "fuzzyness" will still apply to non-UI things that are displayed - i.e. images. Since based on your posts you will be working with images primarily, high-res vs. standard is still a choice I'd recommend considering carefully, and ideally by trying them both side-by-side.
    Ps. Thanks for awarding points!

I am trying to save a photoshop CS6 psd file to jpg and get an option jpg, jpg2000 or jpg stereo, I choose jpg and then Mac 256 colours, normal or interlaced.  I just want regular jpg with a high resolution.  What am I doing wrong?  , never had this problem before.  Help!!!

Your description of the issue is not clear:
What format, bit depth and color was your original file "from the net"?  It sounds like it was a Color Indexed GIF, which would cause what you are describing.
In the Macintosh Finder, select said "net image" and do a Get Info on it (Command+i). When the Info box appears in the Finder, take a screen shot and upload it here by using the little camera icon in the Reply Editor in the forum's web interface.
If the image is a 256-color GIF, remember the rule:  GIGO = garbage in, garbage out.
