When previewing webpage comps designed in Photoshop at 72ppi in Bridge CC, on standard monitors the images appear at 100% as intended, but on retina displays they are tiny! Is it possible to adjust preview settings in Bridge?

I'm not familiar with retina display other then on my iPad and iPhone but they don't run Bridge.
Can you provide a screenshot?
And how do you use the 100% preview, with the loupe, full screen?
Have you also tried to purge the cache for this file (select and use right mouse menu 'purge cache for selection)
To my knowledge Bridge CC supports Retina, one of the reasons the AOM was canceled because this does not support Retina.

There is no such thing. In CS6 only PS itself is Retina compatible. You would have to use CC for full Retina support.

CS6 Indesign & Bridge for Mac retina display

Will Adobe be releasing an update for Indesign and Bridge (as they have done for Illustrator and Photoshop) to make them suitable for retina displays? Just spent £2000 on a new mac and am seriously disappointed that Indesign and Bridge are fuzzy! I don't have the budget to switch to the cloud just yet so this is a problem for me as a graphic designer! Why would Adobe release updates for Illustrator and Photoshop but not Indesign?

Yes. InDesign CC had somewhere around 30 man years of development put in
to it.
It was re-written completely from the ground up to go 64 bit on Windows
and decarbonized on Mac.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)

    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. JPG images not displayed correctly in Bridge and Photoshop (Mac OS)

I am using CS4 under OSX 10.4.11 on a PowerMac G5 Quad with 23" Apple cinema display. Images which have been captured as JPG are displayed fine by Preview, but when opened in Bridge, Camera Raw or Photoshop. the colours are all "washed out". The attached screen capture should give an idea of the difference, with the upper being Camera Raw (image settings) and the lower being Preview. My monitor has been calibrated and I'm using sRGB IEC61966-2.1 colour space in Camera Raw and Photoshop. The colours displayed by Preview are pretty close to "real life". I find it virtually impossible to adjust the colours in Photoshop to get back to anything similar.
After opening the image in Photoshop without adjustment, and Save As JPEG with embedded color profile, Preview displays the new image the same as Photoshop. Save As JPEG without embedded color profile, and Preview displays this copy just like the original. It seems that Photoshop is making different (incorrect) assumptions about what color space to use when there is no embedded color profile. Shouldn't it assume sRGB like virtually everything else (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRGB)? Or is its interpretation of sRGB incorrect? How can I fix this?

I can unambiguously and in good faith represent to you that my color management, from capture to print, is as spot-on as anyone with any kind of setup can hope to achieve. Unequivocally and without qualifications.
Now, first things first: Forget about trying to synchronize color management across the point applications lumped together only by Adobe marketing fiat into a variety of meaningless "creative suites". Concentrate on Photoshop. Do not try to use Bridge to synchronize anything.
The "suites" are a totally artificial construct created by Adobe bean counters and marketing types. The point applications (i.e. the individual programs clumsily bundled together, e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) are developed independently by separate engineering teams that are not only not in the same building, but in different cities, different states of the American Union, and even in different countries. They have very little communication among them, if any, as evidenced by repeated posts in these forums by Photoshop engineering staff urging us, the end users, to let the other teams know in their own forums that a given problem exists and is actually affecting our work.
Enough said about the cause of the problem. The end result is that Color Management is at very, very different levels of progress and sophistication in each individual point application, with only Photoshop fully entitled to be considered state of the art.
Secondly, a disclaimer: I have been hanging on to my CRT monitors and take care of them as Jascha Heifetz used to take care of his Stradivarius. I don't know what I will do if I manage to outlive the usefulness and accuracy of my CRTs (unlikely at this point). I have despaired in futile efforts to bring the luminosity of any LCD monitor down to where I would feel comfortable calibrating and profiling it. I believe my monitors are the foundation of my color management efforts.
Especially if you have one of the extreme wide-gamut LCD or LED monitors, you'll face an uphill battle.
Be careful to avoid any version 4 icc profiles, whether canned or generated by your calibration software. Stick to version2 icc profiles. Ask the manufacturer of your calibration software/hardware if in doubt.
Here are some not-too-recent, but thoroughly representative screen shots of the calibration results I obtain with my monitors, which I calibrate and profile often and regularly (I validate the calibration at least several times per month).
In a nutshell, my color management practices and settings mirror those described by Bruce Fraser, Jeff Schewe, Andrew Rodney and Gary Ballard's site. I have learned from all of them.
My working color space is ProPhoto RGB. I choose to work with PSD and PSB files. As a long-time, rabid JPEG hater, I only rarely deal with JPEGs, using them sporadically to illustrate a point in this forum or elsewhere in the web. My main output consists of prints.
I only deal with tagged image files (files with an embedded color profile) and often recommend beating up with a baseball bat any moron that hands you an untagged file—figuratively of course, but I find the expression gets my point across unambiguously.
Following is a screen shot of some of my pertinent settings:
Note that I have never bought into the "suite" concept myself. I do have and routinely use Adobe Illustrator 10.x, InDesign 2.x and Acrobat Professional 8.x, but they are all older, independent versions of each point application, licensed at different times.
Be further advised, that the answer to many problems offered by Adobe engineers often is not to install VersionCue, or uninstall it, or at least disable it.
Also, as outlined at the beginning of this post, concentrate on Photoshop, not on synchronizing applications that can't really communicate with each other, despite the claims of Adobe marketing hacks to the contrary.

Indesign CS6 looks unsharp, crappy and ugly on retina display

Indesgin CS6 is the only application in CS6 Design suite that doesn't support HiDpi (RETINA) displays correctly.
For Acorbat X I had to purchase Acrobat XI to get a Adobe premium (and expensive) product on par with the free PDF Reader or OSX Preview display qualities.
For Indesgin CS6 I don't see such an option, since the CC subscription is no option for me (I don't need Indesign on a regular basis and refuse to pay a monthly fee if I need it for a few days... therefore I am much better off with the purchase model... especially for corporate tax laws in Germany).
I hereby request an update for Indesign CS6 to support Retina. If this is not possible, I have to look for other options in my future purchases.

No I did not come just to rant. I came for a solution on how unexpectedly ugly (and here andthere unreadable, as in images) ID CS6 looked on my retina MBP.
And no, I do not feel better. I feel screwed. I have invested a large amount of time and effort in getting the book done in ID (I even thanked Peter Spier in my first edition for his help on this forum to solve a few serious issues I had).
And now I find out that if I want to continue with ID, I need to upgrade to a construct where I need to perpetually pay a fee or lose access to my own work. I feel Adobe is trying to get me ultimately locked in, and I do not like it. I like ID. I like how I could create a nice (some say beautiful) book. I hate having to say goodbye, but a perpetual lock in of this kind is a too high a price to pay.
And yes, as it is now, I can take a one-month subscription to get access. But I have to pay that every time this occurs (think of small editorial changes that happen once in a while). And no guarantuees that this kind of short time or affordable pricing stays. Yes, it can all turn out well. But I am completely at the mercy of Adobe and that gives a pretty unfree feel to it all. It is a type of blackmail: pay or you won't have access to your own stuff anymore.
This is not like my TV subscription (I can change provider without a hassle). This is like using a camera to record my family movies only to find out that the camera was cheap because I have to keep paying every time I want to access my own work for a future price that is uncertain. I will do it if I have to (if there is no reasonable alternative). And if I cannot find a reasonable alternative, that suggests from my perspective that Adobe is wielding monopoly power here. And I do not like that either.
For many the price may be reasonable and I can understand many of the advantages. But the fact that I become completely dependent on whatever Adobe decides in the future is for me an unacceptable risk. Many people ignore risks. If this risk does not turn into reality they will be vindicated. If it does, they are screwed too.
It would be OK if the subscription price was for regular updates and the version you have just keeps working. And if you do not subscribe, you need to pay the full amount if you need to update. But now it is, pay or be locked out.
BTW, subscribing to just ID costs >$30/month over here.

Did anyone try Windows 8 on a Mac ? Which one is more reliable and compatible ?

Only Windows 7 is supported by Apple in Bootcamp at this time, however you can install Windows 8 Beta into virtual machine software.

What MacBook Pro with Retina Display is recommended for college students?

I'm trying to decide which MacBook Pro with Retina Display to buy before I go off to college. I want to get the 2.6 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, and just the 512 GB of Flash. But I don't know which one is better for a business major. The 2.6 GHz Pro with Retina, or the 2.3 GHz Retina. My concers are the space, and this computer is suppossed to last me 4 years.

I'm a college student as well and I'm going to be a sophomore engineering major. I'm currently sitting on a 2007 white MacBook. Yes, it is from the stone age. However, over 5 years, I have only used 280 GB of space. I'm going to order a 2.7GHz, 16GB, 512 SSD R-MBP this weekend, in the hopes that this, too will last me about 5 years. Honestly, if you have the money to drop, I would buy the fastest possible configuration, 16GB ram, and a 512 SSD so that you can comfortably use your computer for another 4-5 years. My white MacBook served quite well for 5 years. The thing about newer technology is that it may last longer. A Core2Duo processor from 07 is nothing compared to Ivy Bridge now. So I would max out the configuration if I were you. By 2017, Intel is going to be making processors that will make this R-MBP look like crap, so consider "future-proofing" your computer for the long run.

Canon 5d2 DNG +custom profiles = bad preview in Bridge?

I'm using DNG Profile Editor (1.0.0.39 Beta 2) to make custom profiles for my new Canon 5D Mark II, and then using DNG Converter (5.2) plus Photoshop CS3 Bridge to process images. All on Windows XP.
After my 5D2 custom profiles were in place I noticed that the image preview in Bridge CS3 was "bad." The Bridge preview is very blurry and does not update when changes are made to the DNG file via ACR. For example, if I change exposure in ACR and click "Done" or "Open in Photoshop, the change is saved OK in the DNG file but the Bridge preview remains the original blurry image.
Took a long time to figure this out because I did not immediately associate the problem with the creation of custom profiles. Older 5D2 DNG files previewed OK in Bridge, as did DNG files from my other cameras. I even re-converted some old camera raw files to DNG and they previewed OK in Bridge. There are custom profiles in place for those older cameras.
I spent a lot of time on the usual suspects - purging cache, reseting preferences. All to no avail. Then I removed all my custom profiles and deleted the index.dat file. Ran DNG converter again to make new DNG files from the 5D2 raw. Now the Bridge preview was OK. Then I restored my custom profiles and converted raw to DNG again, getting bad Bridge previews again. Yet the previous converted files would still preview OK in Bridge.
My conclusion: The DNG converter is using camera profiles during the conversion, and in the case of 5D Mark II raw files is creating an error. I'm guessing it is putting an embedded jpeg in the DNG file that somehow confuses Bridge.
I've repeated the tests many times now. I've changed the DNG Converter "jpeg preview" preference to none, medium and full. For the 5D2 files I get bad Bridge previews on all settings. But I get good Bridge previews on my Canon 20D and Canon 1Ds DNG files regardless of any settings. Regardless of the presence or absence of custom profiles, regardless of the jpeg preview size, regardless of the ACR default settings.
So I'm hoping the Adobe team can take a look at this. Or anyone willing to confirm or deny my tests. I don't have an easy way to post a DNG file, but could email one of my "bad" ones to anyone willing to take a look.

The lack of response to this post forced me to keep testing. Now I've more closely pinpointed the problem and found an easy work around. First some background.
ACR camera profiles are stored in two places. The Adobe supplied profiles are in:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
and your custom profiles are in:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
Adobe Camera Raw, and it turns out the DNG Converter, both build an Index.dat file in this last folder. Apparently this index is built by scanning both camera profile directory trees and building a list of all the profiles it finds. It then sorts that list alphabetically by the profile name that is embedded in the file, not the Windows file name.
The "Adobe Standard" profile for a camera has a file name like "Canon EOS 5D Mark II Adobe Standard.dcp", but embedded in that file is the profile name of just "Adobe Standard". That's why only "Adobe Standard" shows up in the drop down list of profiles in ACR. And that's why "Adobe Standard" appears before "Camera Faithful", which appears before "Camera Landscape". It's alphabetical order.
Now, when you create a custom profile with the DNG Profile Editor, the "Export" function puts "Canon EOS 5D Mark II" on the front of the name. If you are an idiot, like me, you type over all that with something simple like "5D2 Bouce Flash" for the profile name. But wait, "5D2 Bounce Flash" sorts alphabetically before "Adobe Standard" and appears first in the ACR drop down menu. Sounds OK so far.
But then the magic occurs. The DNG converter uses the camera profiles. It actually accesses that Index.dat file, and if it does not exist, the DNG converter will rebuild it, just like ACR. Why it does that I can't imagine. Seems to me that the DNG converter should be simply converting raw to DNG and passing the EXIF and embedded camera jpeg along as is. What need does it have for camera profiles?
Anyhow, if that 5D2 profile is first in the list due to its alpahbetical name, the resulting DNG file will confuse Bridge. Bridge will display a fuzzy preview and will never update that preview, or the thumbnail, when you make adjustments in ACR.
But if you name the 5D2 custom profile such that it sorts alphabetically after "Adobe Standard", then all is OK. The DNG files can be previewed and thumbed OK by Bridge. So I named my custom profile "My 5D2 Bounce Flash", a simple workaround.
Now I can move on to more important things. Like generating a good custom profile for the 5D2. So far the Adobe Standard profile beats anything I've generated. Especailly if I remove that curious Point Curve which can sometimes muck up the shadows.
And now that Bridge previews are "OK" I can work on the mystery of why Bridge Previews of 5D2 DNG files do not match the previews of their equivalent TIF or PSD files. 1.Double-click the Home button.
2. Swipe the app's preview up to close it.
3. Preview will fly off the screen.

Small Previews in Bridge

Bridge displays previews much smaller that the preview window. This occurs mainly with Illustrator files. I see this has been discussed to some extent, but never resolved.
There is a way to change thumbnail size in the content window. Is there a way to change preview size? I know about the loupe, but loupe view is pixellated and fuzzy.

This has been driving me nuts as well, but I think the problem is related to the artboard. What I've found is that if you have ANY content that falls off the artboard, the preview image gets pixellated.
Workaround: expand your artboard to fit all your content. Not an ideal solution, since the "out of bounds" area is often used to place artwork elements that we want to compare, or color swatches, or notes or what-have-you. And we may not want to see that in the Bridge thumbnail.
Workaround 2: create a mask around your artboard.
Note: I'm using Illustrator CS2 for Windows. I *think* CS3 addresses this issue by providing a Crop tool that allows you to define how your thumbnails crop.
Update: Results are inconsistent. After trying the above methods, purging the cache, and re-saving the document with material outside the artboard, my thumb is still cropping to the artboard. Which is fine, I guess. But weird.

If we Export for Web then view it on a retina display monitor, the image lines look blurry and it's not as crisp as non-retina display monitors.

Mark, yes a DVD will play back on a HDTV, just the quality will not match the capability of the playback device. This is certainly the easiest approach though.
As the article you referenced says, ensuring that your previews are set to a larger pixel dimension than your required output will ensure maximum quality, given that you will more than likely have movement on the images in the slide show I would suggest going with pixel dimensions that are at least 1920px.

Retina Display Export Settings?

I recently bought a new 13 inch Macbook Pro with the Retina Display and was super excited to use it with Lightroom 4. I began to edit and export photos for airplane-pictures.net for upload. The website requires that the photos be a .jpg file between 1024px and 1600px on the long edge and less than 3MB. On my old MBP (Macbook Pro), I always exported photos with the same settings at 1280px on the long edge with 72ppi, and a quality of 80 and high sharpening for screen. I did the same thing with my new Retina Display MBP and the photos look terrible. There is an excessive amount of jaggies that make the image look really over sharpened and even out of focus before and after uploading. (I have tried adjusting quality, pip, and screen sharpening but they have resulted in no improvement) However, if I keep those settings, but I don't resize the image at all and leave the "resize to fit" box unchecked and is opened in Preview, the photos look beautiful, AND they are fit perfectly in my 1280px screen. So it's like the photo is automatically resized when I export it without checking the box and it seemingly fits at 1280px, however the website will not accept at the large proportions of something like 5363px × 3352px. Does that make sense? In short, when I resize the photo in export to 1280px, it looks awfully out of focus and over sharpened, but when I don't resize the image and open it in Preview it fits to my screen and looks gorgeous! Has anyone used Lightroom 4 with the Retina Display and figured out some sort of solution? Again, when I used these same settings on my OLD MBP the photos looked just as great.

The website needs to understand how to serve images to retina (or the windows equivalent - hiDPI) machines. Many are not. Many websites need some extra code: for example this: Jao's photo blog: A much simpler way to serve retina displays the right images . Image sites like flickr, smugmug, 500px etc, all do this correctly if you upload large enough images but those are exceptions. Also, even if you are using a website that understands how to do this, your browser might not be new enough to ask for the higher res image. Only newer versions of Firefox and Chrome do this. Safari has always done it right since the retina machines came out and on iPads and iPhones.
My guess is that the website you are using is not doing this right. Which is not surprising as these displays are still fairly uncommon. So your website probably resizes the image at the size it is thinking it is displaying on normal screens.
Lastly, high sharpening is usually too much. Also think about the size you need. A 13" retina has a 2560-by-1600 pixel resolution. A 1280 pixel wide image will look good when it takes up about 50% of the width of your display. At that size it will be about 1 pixel in the file per pixel on the screen. If it is displayed larger, it will look unsharp. So think about how wide on the display it will be shown and determine from that your maximum size you need. Preview is not a good gauge as it by default doesn't show 1:1. You need to change the setting in the preview preferences->images to be "1 image pixel equals 1 screen pixel" and then do a command-zero on your exported file to see what it actually looks like. Also, this only works correctly if you set the resolution of your screen in System preferences to "best for display"

The new Photos app in OS X should address much of this - it greatly simplifies syncing stuff across machines. Apple has details on it up here:
