I wonder if it's possible with java to get the title of the application (this could be any application) that currently has the focus.

The file you'll be looking for that has most of what you're looking for - messages, address book, etc. is the Entourage Database. The verison of Microsoft Office I run (on Lion) is Office 2008. By default the Entourage Database for this verison is at user/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity/Database. That folder (Main Identitty) also has your rules, signatures, and such. You'll have to recover this file from whatever backup you have. If you have a different version of Entourage, the file location will be a little diffferent.

We have a legacy Forms application that has been moved to the web. Now that it is executing using OAS9i, we are now providing an ASP offering for clients. The application consists of 210 Forms 6i screens, 130 Report Writer 2.5/6i reports as well as 150 C batch programs producing text reports in the Unix environment.
Clients are now asking for the ability to list and examine online reports saved to the filesystem.
Has anyone created a method of listing and displaying reports saved to the filesystem? We have a Unix utility that can convert C program text output to the PDF format.
Any help is appreciated.

You might be able to do this without having to write a server-side java bean by doing the following:
web.show_document('http://webserver:port#/reports_dir');
if you just give the directory name and have no index.html in that directory then it should just give you a lisitng of the contents of the directory as links (all your reports that have been turned into PDF files) Your user could then click on the report they want and then the browser should be able to recognize the adobe file and display it without any forms code.

How to invoke a key press event in application that has focus

Even though I know there are programs out there already that do this similar function, I want to write my own program that converts MIDI events into keypresses. Here is how it would work:
- my program does not have focus, some other app has focus while my app runs in the backround
-a midi event happens
-a mapping is done by my app running in the backround: midi event->keypress
-my app causes a keystroke event to be sent to whatever application has the focus.
my problem:
The part I am having trouble figuring out is how to invoke a keypress to the application that has the focus. Can someone shed some light how this would be done? I have learned a little about the Text Services Manager but this just a component of Carbon. I'd think that I needed to talk to a much lower level part of the operating system to be able to send a keypress to ANY app that is running.
I would prefer to work in Carbon, c++
The thing that would make my midi-keystroke program different from others out there is a much more complex mapping algorithm between the MIDI event and the keypress chosen. That's why I want to write my own.

You likely should be having a professional or Apple tech attempt to bypass the firmware password if you forgot it, it's the best way to go about things.
Just because the Mac has a spinning wheel gray screen at boot doesn't mean it's ruined, you just need to bypass the firmware password and then from there fix the machine's cause for not booting, which is likely a software issue from a third party kernel extension file.

How can I create an application that has no menu bar?

I have an application which has all of its functionailty available on screen as buttons or fields. This works very well at the moment. However when I create and run the application I see a men bar appears nuch the same as when deisgning the application namely, "File, Edit, Operate, Tools,, Browse, Windows, Help". I really don't want them to appear at all as everything is already catered for on screen. I have looked at the menu vi's but it is not clear how I can simply not have a menu bar.
Any suggestions?

Issue with publishing an application that has been updated (application with multiple versions)

We are using App-V 5.0 SP1.
I have a package that will need to get patched whenever new security updates are released. The first version of the application always works fine, but when I update the application and re-publish it, a normal user is unable to pull down the new version.
When this occurs I am able to get everything going by logging into the server with an admin account and performing a sync (Get-AppvPublishingServer | Sync-AppvPublishingServer; Get-AppvClientApplication"). What is it about applications that
have been updated that would cause this behavior?
The issue is similar to what the hotfix below addresses, but since we are on 5.0 SP1 I am unsure if this applies still.

Anyone know how to resize a window in an application that has "grown" beyond the edges of the screen?

Suddenly in Illustrator, the workspace window is too big: it extends under the application menu bar so I can't access the top and move it, close it, or minimize it. The sides and bottom extend so far out to the edges of the screen that I can't access the resizing corner. Help!

Can I retrieve files off my MacBook Air that has crashed (White screen flashing folder)?

Besides a few freezes here and there, my MacBook Air has worked fine. However when I opened it the other day, It wouldn't power on. I pressed the power button a few times, and it finally powered on with a completely white screen. I powered it off and on a few times but nothing changed. I figured if I let the battery die, maybe it would work when I charged it again. I left the screen open, but after 10 min, a flashing folder with a question mark popped up, And it's been flashing ever sense. I took it to apple, they said it was a software issue. They plugged it into a g-drive to reinstall, along with other cords and got their apple account up, although none of my information showed up. They said the Mac forgot its software, and nothing of mine would show. They said I have to replace the lap top and gave me prices/options. I never got my question fully answered on if I can retrieve my photos, notes, garage band, music, etc. I left apple with out any trade. Does anyone know of any way I can get my pictures, music, voice memos, and notes, back? I'm desperate and have lots of important stuff that I can't access. I'm also losing work not having access to my computer. But I'm not trading it in until I try/or know there is no way to get my stuff back. I will pay anything to get my stuff back! I honestly would rather have my stuff then the computer. And just get a new one. Any advice will help. Thanks!

Can mean that your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from.
Try restarting while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk and restart.

If the disk is not available, then it's failing or has failed.
If you did not backup your important files, an alternative would be data recovery but it's expensive.

I have one application that has requirement to do low and high speed acquisition. I want to change sample rate while running. BUT... I have E series Device

I am writing control software for a process that is usually dull and
requires only 10 Hz acquisition rate. At particular times during
the sequence, however, we are interested in looking at a couple of
channels at 1000 Hz. My approach so far is to configure my
Buffered DAQ to run at the higher rate at all times. When we are
in the 'high-speed DAQ' mode, the program logs every point to
disk. In the 'low-speed' mode, I am picking off every nth (in
this case, 10th) point to log to disk. At all times, I update my
GUI indicators on the front panel at a maximum of 4 times per second (I
find that anything faster results in an uncomfortable display), so I
fill up a FIFO with data in my acquisition / logging loop, and read the
FIFO in the display loop. The data in my GUI display can be up to
250 milliseconds off, but I find this acceptable . As a side note, I
need buffered Daq with hardware timing, as software timing results in
lost data at 1000 Hz.
This all works fine and dandy, but I am convinced that it is not the
most elegant solution in the world. Has anyone developed a
buffered DAQ loop where the scan rate can be adjusted during
operation? I would like to change the rate of the E-Series card
rather than relying on down-sampling as I am now doing.
The reason I have concern is that at the moment I am simulating my AI
using MAX and when running the down-sampling routine, I consistently
miss a particular event on the simulated data becuase the event in
question on the simulated data always occurs at the same 'time', and I
always miss it. Granted, while it is unlikely that my measured
signal and my acquisition are perfectly synchronized in the real world,
this particular situation points out the weakness in my approach.
More than anything, I am looking for ideas from the community to see
how other people have solved similar problems, and to have you guys
either tear apart my approach or tell me it is 'ok'. What do you
think?

Adding to Alan's answer:
One of the problems that comes with these tricks for variable-rate acquisition is being able to match up sample data with the time that it was sampled.
If you weren't using either of E-series board's counters, there is a nifty solution to this! You'll be using 1 of the counters to generate the variable-rate sampling clock. You can then use the 2nd counter to perform a buffered period measurement on the output of the 1st counter. This gives you a hw-timed measurement of every sampling interval. You would need to keep track of a cumulative sum of these periods to generate a hw-accurate timestamp value for each sample.
Note: the very first buffered period measurement is the time from starting the 2nd counter until the first active edge from the 1st. For your app, you should ignore it.

Looking for an application that has great time stretch capabilities

I have Logic Pro 8 and I am still learning its capabilities. I do alot of sound design stuff and am looking for a spectacular time stretching application. I've fiddled with Logic's time stretch algorithms but so far I'm not thrilled with the results. I'm interested in really stetching things out to create new sounds. Here is a great example from Nine Inch Nails. It's a remix of Eraser off of Further Down The Spiral.

The vocals are EXTREMELY stretched out and take the form of a pad almost.
He is actually saying, "Erase me." Keep in mind the original vocal is only about 3 seconds long. I'd like to provide that example but the Amazon sample isn't long enough to get to that part. Maybe download it to listen. It's called Eraser, it's from "The Downward Spiral" album. (1994)
Now, does anyone know if Logic is capable of getting this good a result like the sample I provided? I've seen PT Elastic Time stretching capabilities and it sounds awesome, at least what I've heard from their demo video on elastic time. Can the same results be achieved in Logic Pro 8?
If not, what plugin do you recommend that could achieve this EXTREME time stretching stuff. Or, does anyone know what Nine Inch Nails used to get that effect on the vocals for that particular remix? I just think it's a limitless tool for sound design, but right now I'm feeling limited in the sound quality department. I know I can keep stretching and stretching and stretching the sample region but that sounds a digital mess when I get it to the point were I want it, so please, don't suggest I do that, unless you know a way to make it sound REALLY GOOD in Logic using the algorithms that come with the program. Step by step info would be lovely.

Write a desktop application that has sudo privlages?

Hi,
I'm writing a GUI frontend to Netcfg in C++ and am nearing 1.0 version. The problem is that since netcfg needs root privlages, right now it's nessesery to run it using sudo. I'd like the user to be able to run it without sudo, for example in startup scripts. I know it's possible, networkmanger wicd archassistant and every other program of simular nature does it. Can someone point me in the right direction? I searched in google but did not find a good solution.

For reference, if it is a script (Bash, Python, Lua, etc.) then setuid will not work because it is not the script but rather the interpreter that is executed.

Get a handle on an application that has already been launched

Hi all,
My requirement is to get a handle on my application if it is already launched. This is because whenever a client clicks on a link to the swing app, it should not open a new instance, instead it should use the existing application if it is running. A new instance should be created only if there is no other instance of the application running.
