Review: Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA - Release Your Inner Artist

Last week I took a look at the Sony Sonnar 35mm f/2.8 and found it to be a lens of exceptional quality. This week I’ve been fortunate enough to get the opportunity to test another lens from the Sony ZA line-up; the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA. This is another high-end lens manufactured to the exacting standards of German optics company Carl Zeiss, designed for use with Sony’s full-frame A7 range of cameras.

  • Review: Should you upgrade to the high quality Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA camera lens

The Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA is a high-end lens designed for Sony’s E-mount compatible cameras like the A7 II, the A5000 and the A6000. It’s a lens which aims to satisfy the needs of professional photographers and serious enthusiasts. But for many readers of the Plug-in blog the question is: "Is it worth upgrading the kit lens that comes with my camera?" Today I’m going to attempt to answer that question in a totally unbiased manner.

Yes my particular issue is not like yours. However, there have been many other laptop users experiencing similar problem to yours after 3.10 kernel. Mostly it seems to be bumblebee users that experience your problem with the blank screen. We do know that nvidia have yet to make their official drivers work with kernel 3.10 and up. The drivers in the Arch repository have been patched to work with 3.10. From what I have seen, this also only seem to be affecting laptops with newer nvidia gpu's. I fear there is not much to do with this problem until nvidia give official 3.10 kernel support.
My suggestion would be to stick with 3.9.9 kernel and the drivers that work with it, and don't upgrade those packages until nvidia has addressed these issues. If you have a look at the nvidia forums you will see quite a number of topics mentioning black screen when starting x on 3.10 kernel, and also a thread for the system dying. Reading some of the threads there may help you keep up to date on whether or not the issue seem to be solved.

I only shoot in RAW, and I am having this same issue. I shoot Nikon with a Tokina lens. This morning, Tuesday October 14, 2014, I had this setting. I closed the program and restarted it, and now I only have Apple, Canon, DJI, GoPro, Nikon, Sigma, Sony, Tamron lens profiles. There was not an update, nor did I actually change any settings. What is going on here?
I talked to customer support, whom suggested that I was stoned out of my mind because these profiles do not exist in lightroom. I did as the rep asked, followed the link and downloaded the "new" profile. Now I can't get it installed. Meanwhile, my photos are waiting for me to edit them. Can someone please help out here?!

  • Review: Sony FDR-AX33 4K HandyCam Camcorder

If you have a 4K TV you have a few options out there for getting the most out of your display … but if you’re like me there’s nothing more satisfying than creating your own content. Whether you’re shooting beautiful nature vistas, capturing exciting downtown life, or creating memories with friends and family at events that you won’t forget, shooting your own video in 4k is pretty awesome—and it’s more accessible than ever. Coming in at a reasonable price and packing a powerful 4k punch, the Sony FDR-AX33 Handycam is the portable video camera that’s makes it possible.  I had a chance to take it out for a spin: here’s how that turned out.

Use Reveal in Finder and open one of the clips in the QuickTime player. Report exactly what it says in the inspector.
Report your exact system specs including the drives that are playing back the 4K media.

  • Review: Sony MDR-AS600BT Bluetooth Wireless Sports Headset

I walk about an hour a day to the SkyTrain and home, rain or shine. It’s a great time to listen to new music on Spotify or call friends and family; I’ve spend the past few years flipping between headphones from Bose, Monster, and my Apple EarPods. The one thing that most of them have had in common is that they have a cable running from the earphones to my phone. That cable gets snagged, pulls and will either rip out of the audio jack or pull my phone out of my pocket on a bad day. For the last week I’ve been using the Sony Bluetooth® Wireless Sports Headset on my walk. Have they solved the cable problem and are they worth buying? Read on to find out!

I saw all your problems listed and quickly read it through looking for "I've tried to update". I clearly read it to fast. Sorry about that, my bad.
As for the "assumed answered" check the 2nd announcement on the main page on this forum for a detailed explanation to this.
The software version name/number isn't listed anywhere on the website but you can check this in the device itself. Back button > Settings > System info. The latest one is called 0.1.B.0.6.
Since you've already done the update and still are having problems I suggest you download Update Service. http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update-service/
With this program you can redo the installation which hopefully solves your issues. If not, I'd suggest you take it back to the store.

  • HOW TO CONNECT A SONY PLAYSTATON DUALSHOCK 3 and/or SIXAXIS BLUETOOTH CONTROLLER TO YOUR MAC ***NO PASSCODE, NO TURNING BLUETOOTH OFF OR ON, NO TROWING YOURSELF OFF A CLIFF IN FRUSTRATHON***

***A tutorial written on trial, error and a big bucket of coffee***
Definitions of the controllers four red lights flashing:
    - Slowly ≈ once per second
    - Rapidly ≈ twice per second
    - Don't flash = off
All the controller buttons you will need to press:
    - PS button = the PS-logo button in the centre of the controller
    - Reset button = The reset button are located on the back of the controller inside the tiny hole just to the right of the middle screw.. Depending on how you hold the controller. -If you hold the controller upside down, the hole are to the left of the screw... ...never mind -let's go on, shall we? ..(Closest to the L2 button) -SONY recommends that you, i quote; "use a small, unfolded paper-clip or something similar to click the button"
    First thing:
0.0     Open Bluetooth Preferences. (System Preferences / Bluetooth)
    If if if if if:
0.1     If the controller is connected to the USB cable, disconnect the controller from the USB cable..
0.2     If the lights on the controller are flashing rapidly, and the controller constantly are pushing on and on and on and on to get a pairing request passcode           NEVER MIND THE DIALOG BOX! Don't even bother to reject it, it will only reappear pushing you over the edge..
0.3     Press and hold the PS button on the controller for about 10 seconds to make the controller disconnect and go to sleep, or disconnect the          controller in the Bluetooth Preferences THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT THE CONTROLLER HAS STATUS OF BIENG: NOT CONNECTED!
0.3.1  If the controller is disconnected, give the dialog box your meanest evil-eyes and a last ever slam on the reject button if you really can't stand looking at it..
    Next up:
1.1     Connect the controller to your iDevice using the USB cable. (Do not disconnect the USB cable until step 1.4) -The lights on the controller will start           flashing slowly, and the controller will appear in the list of Bluetooth devices as: PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller
1.2     If the controller don't appear at all or appears without a name and the address like 00-00-00-00-FF-FF in the Bluetooth Preferences, then just           press the reset button briefly and wait for the controller to reappear in the Bluetooth device list. -Never mind if the controller appears two times or more,           just carry on, you can always delete the non-connected-Bluetooth-controller-blah-blah-thingies-in-the-Bluetooth-Preferences-list afterwards. The main goal           at this point are just that one of the Bluetooth settings is configured..
1.3     Press and hold down the PS button on the controller for about 5 seconds, release the PS button, and first now disconnect the USB cable.. -The           controller will now appear as connected and configured in the Bluetooth Preferences
1.4     Finally add the controller to favorites and update services in Bluetooth Preferences / the sprocket pop-down menu. (Don't know what the update           services does, but why not click it when you can??)
1.5     DONE! -The controller should now appear in the Bluetooth device list like this:
    GOAL:
*** Paired = NO ...And it's a resounding NO -Nobody on this earth knows how to pair the controller!! Connected yes / paired no, no, no ..Never mind that, the          controller will work anyway!
    *** Configured = Yes
    *** Favorite = Yes
    *** Connected = Yes
*** Flashing lights on the controller forcing you into epileptic seizures = No ...Hurray
-Actually non of the four lights are lid.. When the controller is paired on the PlayStation it will be given a number 1-7 and the fact that this doesn't  happen on the Mac, may properly cause that people are having problems connecting more than one controller to their Mac?? -I'm no expert in this field, just thinking loud..
If if if if if vol. 2
    - If you fumble in step 1.4 and let go of the PS button and/or disconnect the USB cable to soon the lights will flash rapidly..
    - If you disconnect the controller from Bluetooth and reconnect the controller by pressing the PS button, -which I believe is the only way to reconnect it, the lights on the controller will also start flashing rapidly..
    - Or if the lights for some other reason are flashing rapidly..
-To make it stop, cause it's really annoying, do as follows:
2.0     Disconnect the controller in Bluetooth Preferences - The lights stops flashing when the controller is disconnected
2.1     Connect the controller to the USB cable - The lights starts flashing slowly
2.3     Press and hold down the PS button for about 5 seconds, release it, and then disconnect the USB cable..
-You can also connect the USB cable first and then disconnect the Bluetooth afterwards, the difference is the same.. -Or press and hold the PS-logo           button on the controller for about 10 seconds to disconnect the controller from Bluetooth (The controller will go to sleep and turn the lights off)

    I try this good tutorial!
    Everything done but..
My PS3 controller connect, the bluetooth panel status is connected, favorite and configured, but "Services" result "NONE" :-(
When controller connect to my MacBook Pro, it continue to lights the led fast and it disconnect automatically from system after 15 seconds
    I forget: I run OS X 10.8.2!

  • Mini and Sony Alpha Camera

Has anyone ever used this combination and if so, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you're looking for general information and background - and perhaps an indication of Mac compatibility, the review at http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dslr_a100-review/ may help, particularly in that it mentions that of the two applications supplied with the camera, the image viewer/downloader is PC only, but that iPhoto works for Mac users, and that the image converter for RAW files is both Mac and Windows.
Since the camera has USB, it would not be expected to present any practical usage problems for Macs, and of course a card reader could be used in any event. The lack of supplied Mac-compatible image downloading and viewing software is a bit disappointing I'd say, but since it works with iPhoto, it should also work with such alternatives as GraphicConverter.
If that doesn't help to address some of your concerns, it would perhaps be helpful to indicate what information you're seeking so the real photo experts can jump in and assist!

  • How can I Import 2 channel audio from a Sony PMW300 camera?

How can I Import 2 channel audio from a Sony PMW300 camera?

    Terry Woolf
    Thanks for the reply.
The link to your prior thread is
    Audio
I suspect that the issue of no audio for your .mp4 file goes to your conversion method MXF to .mp4.
Please excuse if I am saying what you already know. When you import your video into Premiere Elements (in your case 12 Mac), a project
preset is established, either by you manually or the project automatically. That project preset contains a description of the project settings
for audio as well as video. Unless you select one of the project presets which are described for use with 5.1 channel, your audio in video audio
imports into a stereo project. It is in the export area that you will find your opportunity to customize (if necessary) the settings for audio.
In the project, if applicable to your situation, you can duplicate an audio channel (See Fill Left or Fill Right under fx Effects/Audio Effects).
Please let me ask this to make sure of the details.
If you import your .mp4 with 2 channel audio (derived from your .mxf convert and dragged to Video Track 1/Audio Track 1) and cannot hear the sound....
    a. do you see any evidence for an audio file in the Timeline Audio track 1?
    b. if you do, how many wave forms do you see, one or two?
    c. if you have the audio meters opened while you are playing back the Timeline content in Edit area, do you see 1 or 2 channels and is
    there activity in both.
    d. when you import the file into Project Assets, do you observe any conforming activity going on in progress bar in the lower right cover of the workspace...if
so, do you wait for it to go to completion before continuing on?
We could also try deleting the conformed audio in the Media Cache Files Folder to force the program to re-conform the audio. See Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks should show you the location of the Media Cache Files Folder whose contents you will be deleting.
Please review and consider, and then let me know if I targeted your question. If not, please do not hesitate to let me know, and I will rethink my reply based
    on your response.
    Thank you.

Weekly at most. the right ear just stopped working for no apparent reason. Will never buy a Sony product again. Consider my purchase a donation to your company for I have received nothing worth while in return. I will also be encouraging everyone who asks me (A computer science major) what type of electronics to buy to steer clear of Sony. Thanks for nothing Sony. May this be a warning to future customers.

  • How do I contact Sony with new product they might be interested in incorporating into their products

One of our strategic business partners has invented a circuit chip. It will eliminate the standby power consumption in all electronics equipment. Please note - NOT REDUCE standby power,  ELIMINATE standby power. This will work on all electronics that have vampire or standby power. TV, DVR, DVD, microwave ovens, X-box, etc. Also chargers of all kinds for power tools, personal hygiene products, cell phones, etc.
On Jan. 12th of last year, the California Energy Commission passed the first state mandated efficiency standard targeting vampire charging systems. The new standards begin taking effect Feb. 1st, 2013 for chargers with consumer goods, Jan. 1st, 2014 for industrial chargers, and Jan.1st, 2017 for commercial equipment chargers. It sounds like this mandate will be updated to include more products soon.
The U.S. Dept. of Energy is paying very close attention to this and encouraging all other states to do so as well. In addition (because gov’ts across the globe are stretched very thin), there is chatter among several global energy commissions to implement new international standards for all vampire energy consuming goods in the near future.
As of September 1, average electricity consumption of Energy Star qualified products are to drop to 97 kilowatt hours a year from about 138, and by the middle of 2013, they must decrease to 29 kilowatt hours per year.
To combat the problem of phantom load consumption (aka standby power), our clients have invented a unique power circuit which uses zero standby power. They are currently in the initial process of designing the circuit into chip form and for a limited time they are strategically seeking a select handful of companies interested in providing test verification assistance. Currently they are working with eSilicon in Carlsbad, CA to develop the actual chip.
This should be a perfect fit for Sony products but I am not sure who to contact. Any ideas/contact information would be appreciated.

    Hi Gregory,
Based on your problem description, it indicates that you would like to submit an idea to our company for consideration. We would like to thank you for your interest, and advise that it is our policy to not accept any unsolicited idea for review which is not already covered by a patent. If your idea is patented, please provide a copy of the patent and we will be happy to consider your idea:

You may wish to use registered mail or another traceable delivery option to confirm receipt. If your idea is selected, or if we have any questions, we will contact you.
If my post answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution."

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro up to my old sony trinitron tv! HELP!

I have all the right cords... at least I think. I have VGA SVGA to S-Video 3 RCA TV AV Converter Cable Adapter, a s video cable (male), and a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Female Adapter for Mac. I tried plugging all these things in, but none of it worked.  I do not know if I am just pluggin stuff in wrong or if I do not have the right settings or what.  Thanks!

It would be helpful if you indicated what EXACT model MBP you have and the connections available on your TV.
Note that resolution on your older SONY is not going to be very good compared with your MBP.
    Ciao.
Please also indicate what OSX you have installed on your MBP.

  • How can I sync only the company name with a sony cellphone

I've a problem to sync my adressbook with a sony cellphone.
In the adressbook there is sometimes only the company name and the phonenumber.
when I'm syncing with the sony cellphone the name looks like that " -, apple"
that's not what I want. Is there a way to repair this bug, or do I have to copy the company name into the surname field?

    It's not a bug - it's a limitation of Sony Ericsson phones.
When programming the operating system of the phones, Sony Ericsson obviously took the decision to store contacts first and last names in one field not two.
So, unless you can persuade Sony Ericsson to change this operating system feature, and release upgraded firmware for all affected phones, you'll have to live with it.

  • Sony, please tell me how you allow something like this to happen? Horrific Support Experience

So, the below happened.  Essentialy, Sony sent me four broken TVs, forced me to spend about 20 hours of time replacing those TVs, and has refused to replace my broken television.  The below is a chain with one of your reps.  I would never have expected such a poor customer service experience from a company of Sony's caliber.  It has been very disappointing.  You insist that you are giving me an "offer" but you have given me no options whatsoever.
I note that you continue to maintain that there is no viable replacement.  However, a simple search on your webpage and online shows that there are multiple 48 inch LED televisions still available.  I find your representation to be disengenuous.  The below chain is only one point in the long line of frustrating communications with your representatives.  All told me different things and made promises that were not kept.  I can only imagine how my case file looks.
I would like an explanation from Sony how you could allow something like this to happen?  This has been the most frustrating experience I have ever had with a electronics company -- and I have had alot.  It has been terrible.

Thank you for contacting Sony and for accepting the offer. We apologize that we cannot offer you the regular retail price of the unit since that is not the amount that you paid it for. We will email you a prepaid shipping label which you can use to ship us back your TV and once we determined that it is in transit back to us we will process the check with the amount of $369.99 and you will receive the check in 4-6 weeks. Thank you.

How you get away with treating your customers like this is beyond me.  I am telling you that I purchased the television at a discounted rate that I am no longer able to obtain.  In other words, the amount you are refunding me will not make me whole.  I am also telling you that your colleague literally offered me a refurbished TV about two hours ago (apparently your group offers less to customers now).  You have already sent me three TVs and wasted about 20 hours of my time.  Despite all that, you unapologetically state that your "FINAL" offer gets me to nowhere that I need to be.  You have no remorse for the situation and have not gone any extra distance to make a customer whole, which is all that I am asking for.
You have beaten me into submission over the past month with broken TVs, hours wasted shipping, long conversations with support representatives, and failed promises.  You guys go ahead and do whatever it is you need to do.  There is only so much that I can argue about.  No customer should expect this type of treatment from a company like Sony.  People purchase Sony so that they DONT have to deal with that type of nonsense.  This has honestly been the worst customer service interaction I have ever had.

Thank you for contacting Sony. We double checked if there is a same or comparable refurbished unit for replacement but there is none. The $319.99 is the amount that you paid for the TV and that is what we are going to refund you and the $50 is for compensation. You are getting more than what you paid for the TV so Sony believes it will cut it. Our offer is FINAL. Thank you.

    Mark,
I just spoke to an individual on the phone who told me that you could send a refurbished model .  That conversation is exactly what prompted my email to this email address -- they told me to reach out here because you could provide me a better option rather than the two that were given.  Now you are telling me that not only can you not offer me a better option but that you are taking away an option previously given.  This is getting more and more ridiculous.  I am sorry but this just isnt working for me.  I dont understand how there is this much miscommunication between your departments.
I would like to be put in touch with a manager on this case.  Your offer to refund me 320 + 50 will not cut it.  I am amazed that a company like Sony, which people purchase because of the supposed product support and service, is failing their customer in this way.  It's very disappointing.

Thanks, Mark.  My preference would then be to try a refurbished model one more time.  The issue is that I got the TV at Black Friday discount.  I wouldnt be able to replace it even if I wanted to.  So, I will try one more time and go from there.  Please let me know once the TV is shipped.

If the unit will be replaced it will be the 4th time already and to tell you honestly it will be much cheaper for you to just buyback the unit rather than to pay the shipper deliver the TV every time we replace it and we are not saying that it is your fault just to make it clear. We will buyback the unit for $319.99 and we will add up another $50 as compensation for all the troubles. Please let us know once you have made your decision. Thank you.

Please email me or call me with a response.

  • Apple seriously needs to fix the review process

I know this has been discussed ad nauseam but I'm really frustrated about how reviews are handled by Apple.
I mean, what gives? Are they treating us like dirt because A) they don't care because devs are rushing to the iPhone platform or B) they are overwhelmed by submissions?
One of my apps has been in review for over 2 weeks (I know... some have been over a month so why am I complaining?) and there's no way to know when it's made available (if ever... Apple criteria's seem to change from day to day). 1 hour? 1 day? 1 week? 1 month? Who knows!
Every day my app stays "In Review", I'm losing money from potential sales. It would be nice to get at least an estimate of when your app will be reviewed. Or, at least Apple could tell us a bit more about the review process so we understand how it works and don't panic when apps don't get reviewed before several weeks.
It's sad because the iPhone platform is just terrific but what I dislike is the fact that once you send your app for review, you lose control over it. The App Store does have it's advantages, but I think it's getting sour and while launching a desktop app might be more demanding money-wize and marketing-wize, at least you keep control of your distribution and you can release your product when you see fit, at not have it standing in review forever without knowing when you'll see a return on your investment.
The lact of information is very unfortunate and I just hope that the answer to my first question in B).

Does anyone have a phone number to call? Hard to believe paying developers have nobody to call.
I don't mind waiting, but I sure as **** want to know if there is something in my app that they are waiting on ME for.
It wouldn't kill them to have each guy in the review phase check a single box to say what he has reviewed and then notify you by email.
Has anyone reading this been able to talk to anybody at Apple, just to make sure that they aren't waiting for something to be added to the upload or fixed in the binary?
I submitted 2 apps - the one on the 24th sailed through and has sold 150 copies.
The one on the 26th is still sitting in review.
