RH8 HTML suddently generating truncated CHMs

I typically compile a new.chm file for my project once or twice a week. Yesterday, the chm I generated  came in at 1975 kb. The previous one, created three days earlier for the same project, was 47,489 KB.
RH displays no error messages and does not crash. However, when I attempt to open the .chm from its network file location, IE tells me that "This program cannot display the webpage." The same message appears when I attempt to open the file from my desktop.
In studying the knowledge base, I thought that perhaps that the microsoft html help.ssl file might have been corrupted. So I used RoboServer 3 > History, to roll back that file to the date on which I last created chm successfully. I updated my version locally. But to no avail.
I created a new SSL layout and generated a chm with it. No luck there either.  I've rebooted multiple times in the process.
My version is fully updated. I tried generating a webhelp file. That worked out just fine. My file name standard has been consistent: JOH 1.13__numeric_date.chm.
My project has a couple of broken links, but I don't imagine that could cause this issue.
Suggestions would be appreciated.

Update to my preceding response...
After many additional hours spent reading forum posts, I took advantage of three suggestions that I found -- successfully. I was able to generate a new .chm without additional issues after implementing the following steps:
1. I changed the output location to my desktop. The idea was to shorten the length of the path.
2. I made sure the output name corresponded to the project name. I had previously used an abbreviated file name for the output.
3. I cleared approximately 10 of 12 broken links.
I subsequently checked out everything in my project and checked it back in to RoboServer. This may have been pointless, but I wanted to be sure that all updated content was stored.
Parenthetically, after fixing the broken links and saving the project, RH crashed. This occurred many times before I figured out that there was a glitch involved, thanks to a post on Peter Grainge's website under RH > RH8. He identifies the issue and proposes a workaround that involves a fix from within the Index Editor. The only problem I see with this is that my broken links have nothing to do with indexed keywords. In fact, I haven't even built an index yet.
I have not previously had this sort of problem when fixing a broken link and I would welcome clarification of the issue and the fix.
Many thanks to all who have tackled these issues previously and posted their results.
end of update
Beginning of original post:
The chm is generated on my C drive. It won't open whether published to the a network file or to C:/...ssl. I am able to successfully open chms created on or prior to 1_15_10, from the network or my C:/ drive.
My local path is C:/Documents and Settings\gmichaels\My Documents\RoboServer Projects\Javelina Online Help_13\!ssl!\Microsoft_HTML_Help.
Yesterday, the output view reported: Fatal Error: Unexpected error from Microsoft HTML compiler.  Finished compiling HTMLHELP in 482 sec(s)  Compilation complete.
I downloaded all pertinent MS updates last afternoon. However, that doesn't seem to have made a difference. Today, I find that RH closes itself without warning at the end of the compilation process.
I know about network related issues, but I don't believe that applies here. The truncated size of the chm file and the fact that it won't open seem to be related issues as they occur only in tandem and only since 1_19 (the first time).
Thanks much

  • RH8 HTML Cannot Generate PDF from Help Files

I just had my PC re-imaged with Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010 and the Tech Comm Suite 2.5. I am trying to generate a PDF from my project within RH8 HTML and recieve the following error. Why can I not generate a PDF? I have Microsoft Word 2010??

Hi there and welcome to our community
You are likely seeing that message because only the newest Adobe RoboHelp 9 is compatible with Word 2010. Your version 8 doesn't understand Word 2010.
There are threads here that discuss installing Word 2003 or 2007 and using RoboHelp 8 with those lower versions of Word.

  • RH v8 crashes when generating a CHM

    RoboHelp HTML version 8.0.2
    Hello!
I've been working on a project for a few months, and RH has been a champ....until yesterday. It crashed when I attempted to generate a CHM file, which it has never done before!
It generates printed documentation just fine.
I have deleted the CPD file and attempted again, but no improvement. Please help!

    Hi Georgina.
Can you roll back to a point before yesterday and see if it compiles? If not, try creating a new Single Source Layout.

  • RH8 HTML - WebHelp: Topic link in TOC goes to wrong topic

I just got my upgrade to RH8 today, and I must say it has NOT been a pleasant experience so far. This issue is just one of many I will probably be posting in the next few days.
I have one RH file that I use to create two versions of help text, using conditional tags to separate out the content. In RH 7 this has worked very well. After my upgrade to RH8 today, I generated each of these files, and discovered that one of the files has the incorrect topic attached to the link in the TOC. I checked the TOC in RH, and everything is fine. I also checked the breadcrumbs, which show the correct location, and I checked the conditional tags and conditional build expressions, but still the wrong topic is displayed.
Has the way conditional tags worked changed in any way? I haven't changed anything in the files today, just opened them in RH8. My conditional build expression is created so that if the tag exists on the topic, it is included in the generated help, but there are many topics that include two conditional tags. These seem to be the ones that have the issues.
On top of this, if I am in help A and I search for a topic that is in help B, it still shows me topics that should only be included in help B.
Seriously. Can all this get messed up simply by opening my help file in RH8? On my first day using it? What other unpleasant surprises do I have in store? Well, other than that nasty looking search results box with the big numbered rank column I can't get rid of.
    Kari

Well, I've discovered a solution to this initial problem, and it has nothing to do with the conditional tags. I think I'll have to start a new discussion to get a resolution to why those don't seem to be working correctly.
After trying a number of things, I stumbled upon the fix, which is, as I've come to expect, completely illogical.
In reviewing the html for the help topic that wasn't appearing correctly, I noticed that the topic was associated with a template called "Main". I inherited this help project, and have never used the templates, always relying on a .css file to handle the styles and formatting. If I went into the topic properties and changed the template to "none", then re-generated the project, the topic link in the TOC went to the correct file.
One problem solved, though why it works is still beyond me. Now on to the conditional build issue!

I am new to robo help and working on Robo help 6.
Could you please tell me the steps to generate compiled chm file from xpj project?
Also can we convert the generated webhelp html files to chm file?
    Thanks

    Hello Sumeet,
Check your SSL (Single Source Layout) pod (Left on your screen_ , there must be a Microsft HTML Help , that should be the Primary Layout and then try to Generate output.

  • Robohelp 10 crashing when generating a CHM

I am running Robohelp 10.0.1.292 on a Windows 7 64-bit with 4GB of RAM. I have a Robohelp project with 1,969 topics from which I've successfully built three WebHelp outputs, but when I generate a CHM file using the same conditional tags as one of the WebHelp outputs, Robohelp consistently crashes on the same topic and produces two crash events in my Windows Event log:

I rebooted my PC and restarted Robohelp, then applied a conditional tag to exclude the topic from the build and was able to successfully generate the CHM file. I turned off the conditional and have tried the following strategies which all result in the same two sequential Robohelp crashes:
    Delete the CPD file
Delete topic from project and recreate it
Delete all the links to and from this topic
    Remove topic from the TOC
    Turn off conditional expressions
    Delete the browse sequence
    Delete the index
Change the path of the CHM file to one that is outside of the project
Shorten the output path of the CHM file to not have any spaces
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Alan

That doesn't surprise me. What seems odd is that you say the crash still occurs if you remove all content from the topic. That would certainly seem to imply that something is possibly fishy with the file name.
I'd be tempted to try a slight variation on the file name and see if that works. Also try a variation on the Topic Title.

  • Can an HTML report be truncated ?

Can an HTML report be truncated by Labview or Teststand to keep only the header & footer and then outputted to the printer to serve as a traveler?

I'm guessing that you want to be able to just open the file with a
browser and click the 'print' button. I don't think you will be able to do this with the HTML report.
You might be able to do this if you are using TestStand 4.2 and select XML report format. You could customize a stylesheet that would  allow you to print just the info of interest.
XML reports tend to be larger than the HTML equivalent...

  • RH8 HTML not launching

Installed RH8 on a PC and it works under everyone that is logged in except the one person that needs it.  They can do a "Run As" and put in anyone from the administrator to themselves and it will work. However RH8 HTML cannot see the network to open the projects that are stored there when it is launched with "Run As".
Rebooting, reinstalling, creating this person a new profile, none of it has fixed his problem of not being able to launch it.
RH8 Word works fine, it's just the HTML version that's acting this way.
Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

Actually the PC is used by one person, but in testing I have logged various people in and they all are able to run it except the person that needs RH8 HTML on the PC.
The person is set as an administrator on the PC, but can't run it.  Run As appears if you right click a progam and allows you to execute that program with different credentials that what you are logged on with.  Say the currently logged in person only has User or Power User rights.  You could do run as and put in the credentials of an administrator to execute it with those elevated permissions.  In this case it's the only way he can run it, but it blocks out the network drives for some reason.  This leads me to believe that RH is looking for something when it launches and it is hitting a network drive as it searches and then hanging at that point.  It shows up in Task Manager for about 3 seconds and then closes itself. The question is what could it be looking for...
As for Source control, I know that it is a really a bad idea to open ANYTHING Adobe off the network, but I have no control over where the employees work on their projects.  I'm the IT guy, not their manager.  I can suggest they move them locally, but have been told many times over the years that it is too annoying to have to check out their files so they won't.

  • Best practice for adding images to a RH8 HTML project?

I'm working on a Word to RH8 HTML conversion. The images in Word are SNAG images but the resolution is poor and some of the images may need to be recreated from scratch again. Going forward I imagine I should work on getting them right in Snagit9. Any suggestions?

For example, installation help topics dealing with install/uninstall screenshots for an application's client and server:
    client_dir_sum.gif
    client_dot_net.gif
    client_uninst_wlcm.gif
    server_wlcm.gif
    server_cfg_tomcat.gif
    server_success.gif
    server_uninst_wlcm.gif
...or, screenshots dealing with an Accounts window:
    acct_groups.gif
    acct_lookup.gif
    acct_lookup_btn.gif
    acct_templates.gif
In other words, use cfg for configuration, dir for directory, btn for button, etc., and use either a function or application window as your lead, allowing you to see all related graphics in sequential order. If you've ever done any manual book indexing, think of this as Index entries/subentries, only the "entry" in file naming is your leading prefix (client_, acct_, etc.), and your subentries are the rest of each file name. Such as:
    Accounts
    configuring groups
    using lookup feature
    lookup button
    templates
Use the same naming conventions for your topic file names as well; using this method eliminates the need for virtual folders. Many users on this forum use the folder structure, but editing/renaming/adding/deleting folders seems to very often create all sorts of grief. I find this naming structure to be less stressful.
    Good luck,
    Leon

  • Convert RH8 HTML Project to RH8 Word Project

    Hello,
I am new to this organization and taking over an existing RoboHelp 8 HTML online FlashHelp project. My supervisor has requested that I find out how to get our RH8 HTML project into a RH8 Word project, and after reading this forum and others, this sounds like it is not the way to go. The intent of converting to Word is to allow multiple authors (who are not HTML savvy) to create or update help topics. So, my questions are:
Is this the right path to take?
If converting from RH8 HTML to RH8 Word is not the correct path, what suggestions do you have for allowing multiple authors to create or edit content outside of RH8 (and then of course fold into the HTML online Help project)?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi there
In addition to what Jeff offered, there really isn't any clean manner to convert a project from RoboHelp HTML to RoboHelp for Word.
Now if you have a need to allow users to edit content in Word, you have the option in RoboHelp 8 of "Linking" Word documents to the project. When you do this you have icons in RoboHelp that alert you to changes in the linked Word content. You then simply update to pull the new content into RoboHelp.
Keep in mind that in order for this to be remotely successful, you will need to ensure everyone uses Word consistently. RoboHelp really works with Word content best if it has been consistently styled with Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3. Sometimes folks just swipe across text and adjust the font color and size to be larger instead of applying consistent styles. When that happens things become a big mess when it comes into RoboHelp.
Personally I would view converting projects from RoboHelp HTML to RoboHelp for Word to be a bad move. I'd suggest sticking with RoboHelp HTML and utilizing the linking feature to your advantage.
    Cheers... Rick

  • RH8 HTML, workspace font 8pt, can it be changed?

    Hi,
My IT department just upgraded me to a faster machine Windows 7 however my RH8 HTML displays my Project Manager et al pods in Ariel 8pt. I know I can adjust the topic font size from the View option, however, has anyone figured out how to change the font size elsewhere on the workspace? My css works fine in my output. It's just my workspace view.
    Thanks
    Jan

I realize this is an old thread, but since I just encountered the same thing in RH11, I thought I would comment. I don't know how RoboHelp interprets what fonts size to use, but I was using two 22" monitors and a 14" laptop screen at 1920x1080 with Windows 8.1. I am testing TCS5 against MadPak. I'd never seen this problem in RH, and I was starting to think I would need to go with Flare to see the screen. I tried changing the resolution and nothing happened.
It wasn't until I pitted the two screen capture programs against each other that I realized something else was going on. Neither of them could capture. RoboScreen Capture was changing the resolution and making a single browser window take up the entire 22" monitor screen. I was seeing other inconsistencies with menu sizes, and I was not able to resize the display text or menus the way that I like them. I also noticed that moving windows from the laptop screen to the monitors resulted in the screens being very large for until they were completely on the new monitors screen (vs. in transition between the two).
To resolve the problem, I have had to stop using the laptop scree, but I suspect it's a Windows bug related to graphics, and it impacts RoboHelp because of the way RoboHelp determines its work space font size. A new graphics driver or a reinstallation may be what is really needed in these situations. It does appear that the bug has only gotten worse in Windows 8.1 (perhaps related to the increasing options allowing users to resize display items separately).
Once I changed my settings to two monitors and rebooted, all of my problems resolved. As multiple monitor use becomes more and more common, and Windows continues to become more customizable, Adobe may well want to change the way RH11 determines its font size. Flare did not bat an eye at this bug. It was fine. Both graphics programs were unusable but in different ways.

  • HTML code generated by JSF compatibility

IS it correct that HTML code generated by JSF is not AA compatible and also cannot work properly without Javascript. Can any one site some references supporting/opposing the same.

Don't know, I'm pretty sure it does. Though, I've never used MyFaces. MyFaces is OSS and done by apache. Google it and you can find out more about it.

  • RH8 HTML Intermittent Hourglass

Ever since I have upgraded from RH7 HTML to RH8 HTML I have experienced nothing but problems.  Currently, I accessed my project, it states "ready" but my when I try to access my topics (under Project Manager) to edit I'm not able to do so because of an hourglass that displays.  As soon as I "attempt" to do something the hourglass appears....when I sit to "wait it out" it disappears.  What on earth is the cause of this?  I have been at work for the past 1 1/2 hours and am still "waiting it out"...unable to access my topics!

This might be related to a problem in another thread.
Create a zip copy of the project as a backup. Rename the project CPD and then reopen the project. When it is open, check everything is good. Also go to Tools > Reports > Unused Files and make sure that none of your topics show there.
If there are problems, post back. Keep that zip safe.

  • Validating HTML form generated by servlet

Hi, folks. I have a dynamic html form generated by a servlet class. Once user fills up the form and submits it, i have another servlet does the form validation. My question is how can i reload the generated html form with error messages when user's inputs failed validation?
I am not able to use JavaScript pop-up windows for doing validation cause the page will be displayed on PDA and cell phone as well. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Could you combine the servlets.
I'm not sure but then you may be able to have the generator servlet in the doGet method and the validator in the doPost method. (don't quote me on this)
If you combine the servlets you have access to the original data (the form), that way if any validation errors occur you can repost the form with their entered data and an error message.

I am not sure if others have noticed it but in my HTML page (generated thru EDitCurrentRecord web bean), the cursor is not always placed in the first character position of a text box/text area.
Is there a way that I can ensure that the cursor starts blinking in the first character position always (instead of the 2nd or 3rd character position)?
    Thanks in advance!

This is a bug. I don't have a workaround for you. I will fix it in the next release.
