Design Flaw in Twin Frozr fans

So, I'm finally creating a thread about this.
There's been reports over the last few years about fans making rattling noises, grinding noises, high pitched whines, whether on cold boot, idle, high RPM, or constantly, and quite frankly I'm tired of MSI ignoring the issue.
There is a design flaw with the Twin Frozr fans.
MSI needs to publicly acknowledge this.
Currently, the only way to get a replacement fan is to send your ENTIRE card in for repair.  Other more reputable companies will send you out an entirely new fansink attachment at no cost.  As one poster said it; "That would be like sending my car to Nissan every time I blow a tire"
My personal experience with Twin Frozr started with Twin Frozr 2 on my GTX 460 Hawks.  The Talon Attack edition started to make a bad grinding noise on cold boot or if it actually got cold enough during idle operation.  When the card warmed up, the noise stopped.  Speeding up the fan to 100% sometimes also caused it to get rid of the noise, but that was only temporary unless the card stayed warm.
My non-hawk exhibited rattling as well, but to a lesser extent.  No grinding noise on cold boot, just a low rattling.
My next card was a GTX 670 PE with Twin Frozr 4.  Surely they fixed the issue by now right?  Wrong!  Within 30 days I started having fan issues.  This fan doesn't rattle, but there is a high pitched whine when the fan is in operation.  The faster the RPM, the louder the whine.  Most people don't even know they have this issue because of the subtle tone of the whine and it being muffled by the fan's air sound at higher RPMs.
That's 3 separate graphics cards all exhibiting an issue with their fans.
There's one thing in common with these issues; it's only caused by the fan closest to the I/O.  This boggles my mind.  Surely if there was a problem with the fan design itself it would affect both fans, right?  I just don't understand it.  This leads me to believe it's a design flaw with the Twin Frozr design.
Some people seem to have an issue with the other fan, but it appears to be rare and not the same type of problem the majority of people are reporting.
Seeing as they want you to lose your card (and $10+ to ship it) for weeks at a time to 'fix' an issue which will no doubt happen again, something needs to be done about this.  Their 'warranty' policy for this issue is completely unacceptable, as is the fact that the fans start acting up within a month of ownership.

I don't think we have a MSI office in Portugal, most brands don't.
Some stores are not reliable they buy from EU retailers some even from Asia retailers and usually they don't give proper support. In Lisbon you have stores like Globaldata, Nanochip, Chiptek and AquaPC they are in business for years, have good customer support and have also good prices.
I'm probably not going to buy any MSI product from now on , for obvious reasons.
Trying to contact a support shoudn't be this hard from a client , at this point I assume anyone that's doesn't want to lose time will just give up.
As a consumer I was forced to RUN and TRY to find msi support , MSI support mail doesn't event exist , since I made this thread it still hasn't been changed.
I really liked MSI ( I still have my 875P MSI neo here with my p4 and the NX6800 working ) it's like saying goodbye to an old friend that has been by my side since P4 times.
I'll buy msi products in US , or in another country maybe , but never MORE in portugal.
This is not cause of the shops , I recommend everyone to buy in the shops listed !!
In fact most of the portuguese shops tried to help me find msi support ( even though they weren't the stored that sold me the card ).
I really don't want ppl to get this mixed up, the problem here is MSI not acknowledging a problem that is simple to fix, having a non-existant email on their webpage as support for over 4 months and the fact that as a consumer I was forced to jump trough loops to actually contact MSI itself !
Every portuguese shop I contacted was super nice and really helpful pointing me to the new msi email
And actually the fix ( hot needle fix forum post link ) came from a shop reply.
US support was always super nice and helpful !
I was forced to fix my fan with the help of users.
If right now my MSI gpu is working is thanks to guru3d and hardwareoc and simillar forums ( thanks to everyone that posted Twin Frozn fixes , this may not mean much , but really .. thanks for helping me out ! )
MSI didn't help or even try to help me , I had to go out of my way to get help , and I never did.
I know some of those stores , they have great prices , but if I buy anything in portugal I'll buy other brands for obvious reasons. ( it was actually one of those shops that helped me pinpoint the "real" msi email )
I am a customer , I should be treated as such , I was joked and pushed around emails , found emails that don't even exist , I was ignored and left looking at a card going dead.
Maybe for some of you it's easy , you just buy another one .... and maybe that's the custommer MSI wants. But that's not me.
Pointing me to places to buy MORE is almost insulting at this point. I wont buy more ... I would be stupid of I did.
I just hope some other person that has MSI and is having this problem with Twin Frozn fans ( that msi refuses to acknowledge as THEIR problem !! ) can fix them themselves or take some info from my posts and others to at least understand what is happening.
From my pov , the fan eventually has some sort of lubrication problem , and due to that it starts to wobble , after that the coils heat up to a point it wobbles even more.
Due to the high temps the fan either "looses" enough to dump all the lubing out.
At some point the fan will heat up so much the plastic IS REALLY hot to the touch and fells that it can be actually moldable ( so I assume this is really bad )
This leads to the start-stop problem , the fan tries to kick itself on , but just makes things worse.
This leads to a fan that fails in 2-3 years.
MSI should either had a way to put oil in the fan OR just start to be ready to replace them.
The fact that IS an ebay market for Twin Frzn fans is just flabbergasting .
I wish I had a better view on this , but seriously looking at this thread,  and seeing all the steps I have done , to find there are others like me that have a failing fan and that the ones that aren't ignored like me have to RMA a card for a simple fan doesn't give me any sort of confidence in this brand.
MSI has one of the best gpu coolers  , honestly it's so god that after all this mess I stand as a testimony for it being one of the BEST gpu coolers around ! All my MSI products so far have been great ... but this experience was just ... weird ..
I wish MSI would contact the ppl that are in my position and help them , it's just a fan  , it's an easy fix and it's easy to replace.
There are lots of ppl right now with fans starting to fail , just take their card , replace the fan and send them back , and MSI will have happy customers , HAPPY cause the brand CARED !
I'm only 1 client , MSI hardly "fells" me leaving ... I really like MSI ... so I wish this won't ever happen again to no one !
I have been ignored in mailing for TDR problems , after that about the 12h+ card artifacting being fixed with cold boot ( I assume this was an nvidia problem )
After using certain drivers that didn't TDR my card ( I have enough PSU for it so ... it's not the PSU ) and having been 2 years finding my own "solutions" to problems ... being ignored and just struggling to get help from MSI for a stupid FAN a cheap part and being hard just to contact them to get no answer .... and getting help from other users while MSI ignores me ? ... I'm thinking on leaving the brand ...
The fans are now working 100% , I'll post info when and if they fail ( if I see my "fix" stopped working ) .
It has now been a long time since 2011 and my first reports , and its been almost 6 months since I contacted msi about the portuguese email listed not existing.
The email is still there , that non-existent email is STILL listen in MSI website RIGHT NOW after me being emailing them about it for 4+ months ,as a customer,  I can only assume they either ignore people , or they have a terrible communications internally .
Again after all this mess , I would be kinda stupid to support or try to buy another product from this brand , MSI support was always great and was the main reason I bought msi products, all this posts are from a person that was truly SHOCKED in everything that is happening and the feeling that no one cared.

  • 650 ti boost twin frozr fan problem

    Hello,
In december I bought MSI 650ti twin frozr 2gb. Untill now everything was fine but lately when weather became hot and of course temperatures went up I noticed that my card is making some kind of rattling, vibrating, resonating noise when fans spin above 45% speed, the faster they spin the louder the sound gets, stopping the fan closer to power connector eliminates the problem. I was thinking that maybe its because of my old pc case so I bought new one from zalman but the sound is still there.
So right now I see only two options, either the card is faulty somehow or its some kind of problem with my motherboard which I dont think is very probable. Should I RMA the card ?
Thank you for help in advance

if you think that there is a problem with one of the card's FAN(s),
RMA the card to get it fixed

  • GT 430 Twin Frozr fan speed.

    Hi guys
I have just got a GT 430 OC Twin Frozr GPU for a HTPC build. It says in the description that the fans are silent, but it runs very loud and the fans look as if they are at full speed, much louder than anything else in the system.
I have tried Afterburner and Nvidia system tools and neither make any difference to the fan speed.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

Seems the VGA doesn't support FAN control.

My advice is best RMA it as is, msi/reseller normally will not accept modified stuffs.
Also the FAN is a new special design introduced with Twin Frozr III Thermal Design called Propeller Blade fan. [images attached]
    * MSI  Propeller  Blade  technology  generates  20%  more  airflow  than  traditional
design, and the airflow covers wider area for the better heat dissipation. Twin Frozr
III thermal design provides 11°C cooler & 13.9dB quieter than reference cooler .
20% More Airflow with Exclusive Propeller Blade Technology
The MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition is equipped with the latest Twin Frozr III dual fan thermal solution. The MSI-exclusive Propeller Blade technology features air channels on the edge of the blades to expand total airflow by up to 20%! The twin 8cm PWM fans, heat pipe technology, large surface-area nickel-plated copper base and high fin density all serve to rapidly draw excess heat away from the graphics card. Under a full load, the R6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition GPU runs 11˚C cooler than the reference design, and noise emission is reduced by 13.9 dB— validating the superior cooling performance and silent running advantages of the Twin Frozr III.
Since active users may use their graphics cards for a variety of applications, MSI developed the exclusive P/S Switch function for controlling the speed of the fans. The Performance Mode is used to achieve an optimal cooling performance, helping to keep the GPU cool even under high loads. For applications or settings where noiselessness is preferred, the Silent Mode can be utilized as the appropriate mode for gaming or movies, ensuring that fan noise is kept to a minimum while still receiving outstanding cooling performance.
if i RMA it they said i probably wont get a TF3 back, i want a TF3 I paid for a tf3. or atleast the fan....they wont even sell me a fan..and to rma it i need to pay 45$+shipping..think im gonna file a bbb on newegg..
msi wont even let me buy a replacement fan -_-

  • MSI GTX 670 Twin Frozr

MSI GTX 670 Twin Frozr fan seems to make a fast clicking noise when not under load or cold.  Have to start up something that's graphics intensive to get it to stop.  This clicking noise starts a few seconds after dust off.  Anything that I can do from here?  Still under warranty.
    Great card otherwise.

check if the VGA FANs are touching something

  • Broken Fan Blades on MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr

    Greetings,
I quite recently purchased an MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozer OC and have been extremely happy with it, but today I had to replace a faulty motherboard and upon pulling the guts out of my computer I found two smashed up fan blades in the bottom of my case. The two blades in question seem to have snapped off completely from the bottom and I cannot figure out why.
The card still works perfectly so I'd prefer not to have to send it to Holland for repairs, is it possible to get a spare fan from MSI or from elsewhere?
    Thanks in advance.

Fans aren't sold separately by MSI. Some guys here could obtain those on ebay from China but you'd need to check for the right ones as they won't be sold as Twin Frozr replacement fans. Alternatively MSI would need to repair it (not for free of course as it is physically damaged). Other than that you could get an aftermarket cooler.

The fan is faulty. As no replacement parts are offered separately by MSI suggest to switch to an aftermarket cooler like
Does that cool the VRAM well?

  • GTX 570 Twin Frozr II OC Fan

The fan on my GTX 570 Twin Frozr II OC is locked in between 40%-85%. I would like to have the full range of 30%-100%. I believe I have the latest bios. I don't want to have follow the process listed by msi for updating my bios, which involves downloading one program so you can configure something so you can use another program......
EVGA has a simple executable file which unlocks the fan speeds. Does MSI have something similar?

i can feel it , i pass my finger near the fan
then it could be your illusion/imagination...
what hapends if you force/apply max FAN speed from AB?
Does the FAN2 will speed up or keep the same state?
    And FAN1 will speedup too?
Apply max FAN RPM from AB, then observe and compare both FAN's again

  • [Tech Help Needed] GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC Fan Stops Working

    Hello everyone.
It's extremely rare for me to have computer issues, but this time it happened.
MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC, and here's the issue:
Whenever i turn on the computer the gpu fans spin for around 5seconds and after that they stop, for now they seem fine since i'm usually idling for the 1st 30minutes or so, but when i start playing games the gpu temperatures skyrocket to around 60-70 idling  in-game and the fans just won't start working, yes the the psu cables are connected to the gpu, bla bla ( duh ). i've had the gpu for around 2years and it worked fine but all of a "sudden" the fans just seem to not work and it starts getting very high temperatures, i've read someone complaining about the same issue and he was told to replace his gpu bios with some uefi bios and he said that the uefi update solved his fan issues which were the same as mine.
Now my problem is, i've never done that "Bios Flashing" and things like that and i don't know if my Board is compatible. If it worked for that person then it should work for me since the symptoms are literally the same. I've tried uninstalling the gpu drivers completely and installed again, the issue still persists.
If it's of any reference i own the following setup:
MB : ROG Asus Crosshair IV Formula
CPU : AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE
GPU : MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr III 2GB SC
    RAM : 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaw X 1600Mhz
PSU: Corsair GS 700 Gaming Series ( yes its more than enough and good enough )
I've literally had no problems whatsoever with my system for a few years now, and just like that the fans don't want to work, i can play games and what not, but at around 70ºC with no fans running ..... i've tried using MSI Afterburner to boost the fan speed, the fan speed setting gets set but the rpm stays at 0. i also made it to run on windows start and its still at 0 RPM.
Will the uefi bios solve my problem like it did to the other person with the exact same issue?
Thank you for your time spent reading, hopefully it will be solved.

Still no reply after 2 days, impressive support right there ... every other post that came after got replied ...
Anyway, if its also relevant about my issue :
    - Fans briefly spin after i press the power button to turn on my computer and stop right after around 3-5s and never spin again until i shutdown and power on again for the same brief spin.
    - If i force the fans on Afterburner to 90% or above ( 100% ) they spin and make unsupportable noise.
Also if its of any relevance :
    N660 TF 2GD5/OC
    S/N: 602 - V287 - 050B1302044857
At least provide me with the most up-to-date uefi/gop vbios or whatever that is, to see if it fixes my problem, otherwise recommend me a substitute cooling system that i can use ( a good one, not 3rd rated ) to replace the stock cooling in this because i don't have the money to get another card, and if i get one it won't be from msi for sure.
    Very dissapointed.

  • Noisy Fan on MSI N580GTX Twin Frozr II

Hi Everyone, I am a new user to this forum so I am sorry if this is the wrong section to post this question.  I didn't see a section devoted to hardware issues.
The fan closest to the vent on my MSI N580GTX Twin Frozr II is now making a low hum.  There is no obstruction so I think it is just the fan wearing itself out.  The card is about 1.5 year old.  I think the warranty is 2 years.  But I am not familiar with the process.  Is this covered under warranty? or is this considered normal wear and tear?
    Thanks for any help.

depend, if there is a physical damage, the warranty will be void.
can be performed paid repair instead

  • MSI GTX Twin Frozr 780 Fan not spinning

    Hello ,
Ive had the GTX twin frozr 780 for 5 months now and every 10 to 20 cold start ups of the PC (sometimes more sometimes less) ,the left hand fan will fail to spin causing the other fan to spin at full speed. Rebooting the PC does not correct it, i have to take the side off the PC and gently tap the fan to get it spinning again, then put the side panel back on, i have put up with this for 5 months now and now had enough of it as it seems to be happening more often.
Please help as this little problem is now becoming very annoying.
When i purchased the msi 780 i got 2 off them to run in sli and the other 780 is fine and has no problems.
Ive been a good customer and have bought 4 top end msi graphics cards in the last few years and this is the only one that i've had a problem with.
When i try and rise a RMA with the place of purchase (DABS.COM) it say on there website that i have to return it back to the manufacturer , but when i try to use the msi website returns service its say that i have to return to the place of purchase ..... please could someone help as this is getting very frustrating now
    many thanks Jason

Just got off the phone with dabs.com  and there sending a courier in the morning to pick it up for R.M.A .
    Thanks for your help.
PS just out of interest have you heard of anyone other people with the same issue, as it is very intermittent and was a bit worried that they may not replace it if they can't replicate the fault.
