RMAN backup performance tuning

Hi All,
We have oracle 9iR2 two nodes RAC on solaris 9, I am looking for some helpful material on RMAN backup performance tuning, though i went through oracle's official RMAN performance tuning guide, still if there is some really nice material please let me know!
TIA

Oracle Material is the best.
Anyway, the one given below is also a good P&T book.
http://www.dba-oracle.com/bp/s_oracle_tuning_book.htm
I am looking for some helpful material on RMAN backup performance tuningTip: Give a good value for large_pool_size buffer for a better RMAN performance. For RAC configure channels on multiple nodes for parallel backup process through RMAN,
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE sbt PARALLELISM 3;
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO sbt;
CONFIGURE CHANNEL 1 DEVICE TYPE sbt CONNECT 'usr1/pwd1@n1';
CONFIGURE CHANNEL 2 DEVICE TYPE sbt CONNECT 'usr2/pwd2@n2';
CONFIGURE CHANNEL 3 DEVICE TYPE sbt CONNECT 'usr3/pwd3@n3';
BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG DELETE INPUT;

  • RMAN BACKUP PERFORMANCE.

    Hello Sir,
    Oracle Version : 9.2.0.1 /10.2.0.1
    Operating System : ANY
    This is just for knowledge :
    What will be the performance issue if I have more than 1db (for example 10 Dbs.) and I start RMAN backups of all Dbs simultaneously and only the default channel to disk is being used ?
    If there is any performance issue i.e. slowdown, what will be the best remedy for that and how ?
    Please guide
    Thanks & Regards Neeraj

  • RMAN Backup Speed

    Hi All,
    Our Database size is 1.3 TB and we take RMAN backup but it takes around 48 Hours to do backup in oracle 9i and in oracle 10g offers block compression can this help to reduce the backup time.

    I'm not very experinced with oracle 10g, but on 9i I've never seen this before:
    Every time i do a RMAN backup errors is written in the alert log pointing to the instances' trace file in the udump dir.

    to me it looks only informational, but i was wondering if anyone been experiencing similar behavior before, and if there are a way to avoid this? or is this an error i should take action on.
    any ideas would be very much appricated!

    This is a known bug # 4596065 with RMAN when controlfile autobackup is on and flash recovery area is enabled. Workaround is to ignore the trce files.

  • No one wants my Performance Tuning experience?

    I worked as a DBA for 2 years in IT major where my work was confined to Performance Tuning & monitoring
    and so I had no opportunity to get the experience of Backup & Recovery,RMAN and other Core DBA responsibilities.
    I had to leave in July last year due to my some other career interest. Unfortunately that didn't get
    fulfilled.
    So from January 15th I have decided to resume my career as a DBA.
    I went to a 3 interviews ,but every time my lack of experience in Backup & Recovery and other Core DBA responsibilities is not making my case stronger in the interviews.
    I am losing confidence over my chances of getting a job. Most(Almost 95%) of the IT companies want minimum 3 years experience and that too with Backup & Recovery.
    I have not yet done OCA (I passed only 1z0 042). So i am planning to give 1z0-007 so that i become OCA.
    My questions to all?
    1.*How much value OCA hold in the market* along with 2 years experience(In India i am based,more specifically Pune)
    2. How should i get the practical experience of Backup & Recovery at home itself?+_
    3. I dont have the financial power to go for TRAINING part of the OCP, so how should i make my resume look strong?
    4. Doesn't any company want a DBA who hasn't had a experience in Backup & Recovery. Is Performance Tuning & Monitoring experience such a waste?

    OK. India has produced a lot of DBA's over the past few years, so I suspect the supply/demand situation is not in your favour, especially with the global economic climate.
    And because of career break employers will often have other candidates who look stronger. And they will have certifications.
    So you've been looking a month and got 3 interviews .... that's actually not that bad.
    My questions to all?
    1.*How much value OCA hold in the market* along with 2 years experience(In India i am based,more specifically Pune)In general not a lot. However the only thing stopping you gettig an 10g DBA OCA is an SQL exam pass. Now if you can't pass that exam then you don't deserve the job. And given you've passed 1z0-042 an employer wll ask why who haven't passed the SQL exam (especially if you're into tuing and performance). People in India seem to love 1z0-007 .... I prefer to see people who have taken 1z0-051 or 1z0-047. However I suspect you cannot afford to spend the extra time on 1z0-047 as you need to concentrate on backup/recovery.
    2. How should i get the practical experience of Backup & Recovery at home itself?+_Hopefully you've got kit to practice on.
    3. I dont have the financial power to go for TRAINING part of the OCP, so how should i make my resume look strong?Resume's are not my best area. However in your case studying and passing 1z0-043 will help. 1z0-043 is 50% backup and recovery so that has synergy with your weak area. If finance is an issue consider a WDP course if you can get one. Some eligible courses are cheaper than others, but even they may be beyond reach,
    4. Doesn't any company want a DBA who hasn't had a experience in Backup & Recovery. Is Performance Tuning & Monitoring experience such a waste?
    Obviously performance tuning and monitoring is not a waste ..... but remember Oracle is increasingly attemting to automate these in later vesions, and different techniques are available in 11gR2 compared to 9i.

  • RMAN Backup is very slow

    Recently we have enabled RMAN in oracle database 11gR2.
    We are using Oracle secure backup 10.4, solaris 10 and SL24 tape autoloader.
    We have performed full database backup with size 610GB using RMAN to tape and it took 7hrs to backed up.
    Could you please advice me how to fine tune the performance of RMAN.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Alter system flushed shared pool in RMAN backup

    Hi,
    I am trying to take RMAN backup of 11.2.0.1 Database in IBM AIX 6.1 server.
    The RMAN is hanging .
    Though the backup gets completed, The channels allocated doesnt get released and the RMAN gets hanging.
    In earlier RMAN backup Scripts,
    the DBA was using alter system flush shared pool in RMAN backup script and the backup was getting succesful.
    Now my question is , is using ALTER SYSTEM FLUSH SHARED POOL have any performance impact on the database.

    Now my question is , is using ALTER SYSTEM FLUSH SHARED POOL have any performance impact on the database.Yes, you are allowing the components in there to be loaded in the random order of whatever is called first. This may have a good impact if you had some fragmentation in there, or it could be mildly bad if everything was well sorted, or it could be very bad if you are unlucky or have some pattern of invalidations or should be pinning something or who-knows-what. It generally is considered not a good thing to do as a habit. You wind up with [url http://tkyte.blogspot.com/2012/05/another-debugging-story.html]rainy Monday scenarios.
    Edit: I notice there are some bugs, including very slow performance when using a catalog. When you say hang, how long are you waiting? Have you considered current patches?

  • Slow RMAN backup

    Hi all,
    I´m using Oracle 9.2.0.4 on Linux Red Hat 9 with 2GB RAM
    and 2 HD SATA (160GB and 80GB).
    I have a database with 19GB.
    I´ve started the full backup at 2007-07-04 22:00 and the backup finished at
    2007-07-05 11:00.
    The configuration of RMAN is:

    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle_5/oradata/devdb/backup/rman/snapcf_devdb.f';the script used is:

    you can also think of adding more channels...

  • Unable to restore and recover my Database from RMAN Backup

    Dear All,
    Iam practicing RMAN in Windows environment.
    My configurations are
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON; # default
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 'F:\Backup\%F'; # default
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
    CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO 'E:\ORACLE\DATABASE\SNCFORCL.ORA';
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT 'F:\Backup\%U.bak';
    Then i took the RMAN backup, now iam shutdown my DB and removed one logfile..
    then i tried to startup the DB but it is saying
    ORA-00313: open failed for members of log group 3 of thread 1
    ORA-00312: online log 3 thread 1: 'E:\ORADATA\ORCL\REDO03.LOG'
    So i tried to restore the Database with my rman backup
    RMAN> restore database;
    But i am unable to restore my logfile in the Datafiles location where as all other datafiles are restored but redo logfiles are not restored.
    So, i am unable to recover my DB
    Please tell me whether i am doing any mistake, what is the solution for my problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Mahi

    All you restored was your datafiles.
    Now issue recover database and that will apply the archive logs.
    This is in the oracle documentation.
    "You must restore backups of these archived logs for recovery to proceed. You can restore either to the default or nondefault location. If you do not have backups, then you must performing incomplete recovery up to an SCN before the first missing redo log and open RESETLOGS."
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/osrecvry.htm
    In this case after issuing restore database in RMAN, then issue this.
    "Recover database"
    It will then be an incomplete recovery. They should have been multiplexed. Did you restore your controlfile with this backup? You may have to issue an "Alter database open resetlogs;"

    My pfile has new db_name , but while db creation rman setting to db_name to source dbname.. it should be new db name that i want create with new db name...
    is there any RMAN command to specify new DB name it should set while running

    it appears to be i should not touch the soruce db.. i have access to only source db rman backups and need to create another db with different dbname/sid.. please do help...

    When you performing RMAN duplicate why you making your script so complicated?
    Your instance name and DB name can be different, But what is the contents in your pfile "D:\TESTDELETE\initclonedb1.ora" ? please do post
    Have you started any other services related to ORACLE? check in start --> run --> services.msc any other active oracles services, Make sure you have clonedb1.
    Startup in nomount
    check the connectivity to target server.
    SET NEWNAME FOR TEMPFILE 1 TO 'F:\app\HOME\oradata\clonedb1\TEMP01.DBF';Why you mentioning SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE ? You have option of db_file_name_convert/log_file_name_convert in case if your file system different in Target & auxiliary.
    BACKUP LOCATION 'F:\app\HOME\flash_recovery_area\orcl\'When you have backup in same location why you are mentioning this clause?
    First run duplicate from auxiliary server as
    rman target sys/*****@prod auxiliary /
    RMAN> duplicate target database to "db_name";
    Am not sure what you are trying to do. is it 11gR1 or 11gR2?
    You have option of duplicate from active database without having backup also..

  • Problem in recovery from RMAN backup in case of disk failure

    Hi
    I have Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on Windows. Full Hot RMAN backup of database is scheduled on daily basis. I am taking backup on disks. And then i do manually copy them on tapes. If any disk failure occurs than can i recover database completely in this scenario. If tried restoing that backup on different machine as given below
    set ORACLE_SID=<name>
    rman target sys/<pwd>@ORACLE_SID nocatalog
    startup nomount
    restore spfile
    create pfile from spfile
    startup nomount pfile
    alter database mount
    restore database
    Everything worked fine till above steps. Now i will execute last step.
    recover database
    Here it gives error:-RMAN-06054: media recovery requesting unknown log: thread 1 scn 264750
    Still i typed
    alter database open resetlogs
    Now i can open my database, But is it recovered completely? Or there is loss of some data? Why it is giving this error?
    Thanks in advance. Waiting for reply.

    I can understand the confusion with this whole concept.
    What I meant by all archivelogs is all the archivelogs that were backed up with the backup itself. Again, it is essential to ensure that you archive the current redo log AFTER the backup is performed and then back those archivelogs too. Good thing is, RMAN will take care of this for you if you backup the archivelogs with the BACKUP DATABASE command and/or backup the archivelogs AFTER you run the BACKUP DATABASE command.
    Once you've mounted the controlfile and CATALOG the archivelogs, you can go into SQL*Plus and issue the following query:
    select SEQUENCE#, FIRST_CHANGE#, NEXT_CHANGE# from v$archived_log
    order by FIRST_TIME;This will tell you what archivelog is the latest. Logs generated during the backup may also provide the necessary information. Performing Disaster Recovery should help to understand the full process.
    The ONLINELOG directory in FRA is only populated if you've configured your redo logs to be stored there. However, you are on 9i...right? If so 9i doesn't utilize a FRA.

  • Rman backup archive log

    Hi Guys,
    Can advise on the syntax to perform rman backup of archive logs generated in last 2 days?
    Should it be 1 or 2?
    thanks!
    1. BACKUP ARCHIVELOG UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE-2';
    2. BACKUP ARCHIVELOG FROM TIME 'SYSDATE-2';

    What prevents you from trying both?
    I'm not trying to be difficult here but why take the time to ask people in a forum, not even supplying a version number, and not just find out?
    It took me less than 60 seconds to cut-and-paste both of your command lines into RMAN and look at the output.

  • Restore RMAN Backup

    Dear All,
    I am practicing Oracle Restore scenarios on my Oracle 9i database. Once I complete my tests in Oracle 9i I will move up to 10g and then finally to 11g.
    Following is my recovery scenario:
    1) I did NOT configure Recovery Catalog
    2) I would like to restore my databse from a 15 days old backup
    3) control_file_record_keep_time is set to 7 days.
    4) Backups are on tape.
    Can you guys please shed some light on how to I proceed?
