Trace dumps when performing RMAN backups
Hi,
10g release 2
I'm not very experinced with oracle 10g, but on 9i I've never seen this before:
Every time i do a RMAN backup errors is written in the alert log pointing to the instances' trace file in the udump dir.

to me it looks only informational, but i was wondering if anyone been experiencing similar behavior before, and if there are a way to avoid this? or is this an error i should take action on.
any ideas would be very much appricated!
This is a known bug # 4596065 with RMAN when controlfile autobackup is on and flash recovery area is enabled. Workaround is to ignore the trce files.

Trace dumping is performing ID= .....
We have been troubleshooting a RAC environment that has been performing core dumps. These have all occured after installing new RAM. We have been getting the core dumps on both nodes (2 node environment). Right now we are working on node1 by removing half of the RAM, all is fine, add two more sticks...etc. At times the cdump will result in Oracle being shutdown but usually Oracle stays up and the server stays up. This morning I do a srvctl status database -d <name> and it says both nodes are up and running. Just to double-check I take a look at the alert log for node 1 and see this:
Trace dumping is performing ID = cdmp<sysdate>
There are no other entries since we brought the instance up on that node, just that statement that Trace dumping is performing. It looks like we hit the bad stick of RAM but the cdmp<sysdate> folder has a number of files in it. Got RMAN error when running RMAN backup of archivelogs on physical standby database
Got below error when running RMAN backup of datafiles and archivelogs on physical standby database.
RMAN-06820: WARNING: failed to archive current log at primary database
ORACLE error from target database:
ORA-17629: Cannot connect to the remote database server
ORA-17627: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
Could anyone help me? Thanks,Hello;
When you connect RMAN to the source database as TARGET you must specify a password even if RMAN uses operating system authentication.
So the errors ORA-17627 and ORA-00942 appear to be cause and effect.
What version of Oracle? ( 11.2.0.4 according to the tag )
Can you post your backup script?
Best Regards
mseberg
Update
According to :
Database Error Messages 11g Release 2 (11.2) E17766-03
RMAN-06820: WARNING: failed to archive current log at primary database
Cause: An attempt to switch the archived log at the primary database failed.
So I would check my Primary alert log for an issue.

Generate Trace file when doing RMAN
OS AIX 5.3L with Oracle 10g (10.2.0.1), Since beginning of the RMAN backup, the Oracle generated trc file in udump and it is quite big ( over my dump_file_size limit). According to Metalink, it is a bug (Bug:4529700), since 2005 and it seems happening to all platforms. So does this bug have patch yet? How can I aovid the dump trace file to avoid exploring the storage directory?

How to find out when last rman backup was made in 9i
Hello,
i have an oracle 9i database running on windows here. Is there a way to find out when the last rman backup was done with a sql query?
I would like to create a job inside the database that regulary checks if a rman backup ran sucessfully instead of using scripts in the operating system.
But i only know about commands in the rman utility (that i can not execute as a job, right?) - is something similar possible with for example sqlplus?Hello,
this gives some results, but none of the views begins with RC:

Tuxedo8 core dumps when performing a tpcall in Solaris
Hi all,
I'm installing a Tuxedo application on a Solaris OS:
SunOS 5.8 Generic_108528-13 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-280R
Tuxedo 8.0 compiled under 32bits libraries.
This application also runs correctly under a RedHat Linux 7.1 (kernel 2.4.9-31)
and on a Digital (OSF1 V4.0 878 alpha)
When running the application on Solaris, we always get a core dump when the service
performs a tpcall. Debugging the Tuxedo server we can see the core dump is produced
when the service gets de response from the tpcall, i.e: when the service called
performs the tpreturn.
Any clues will be appreciated, thanks!
Yol.Oh, thanks very much, what a stupid mistake! sorry :(
We knew about the cast, but after looking for the problem in many ways we didn't
realize FLDLEN was a short!
Thank you all for your quick help!

Scott Orshan <[email protected]> wrote:
FLDLEN nLongitud is a short. Casting its pointer to a long * does not
change the
fact that the return value will overwrite other memory. On Linux, the
alignment or

to pass
the address of a real long for the return length.

Yes, that's what we thought at first sight, nevertheless remember itruns ok in

Anyway here I give you 2 samples of code we've tried.
Any of this cases fail creating a core dump.
Case 1:
Src1 calls Src2:
Src1:
void SRC1(TPSVCINFO * BufferFml)
FLDLEN nLongitud;
FBFR *pBuffer;
pBuffer = (FBFR *) BufferFml->data;
if (tpcall("SRC2", (char *) pBuffer, 0, (char **) &pBuffer, (long*) &nLongitud,
0) == -1)
userlog("Error!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!");
tpreturn(TPSUCCESS, 0, (char *) pBuffer, 0L, 0);
Src2
void SRC2(TPSVCINFO * BufferFml)
FLDLEN nLongitud;
FBFR *pBuffer;
pBuffer = (FBFR *) BufferFml->data;
tpreturn(TPSUCCESS, 0, (char *) pBuffer, 0L, 0);
Case 2:
Src1 calls Src2:
Src1:
The same as in case 1
Src2:
void SRC2(TPSVCINFO * BufferFml)
tpreturn(TPSUCCESS, 0, NULL, 0L, 0);
Thanks anyway for your attention ;-)

Yol,
My initial guess is that your code is not keeping track of the tpalloced
buffers correctly - in particular, the one that the reply is received
into.
If you post some code, maybe someone will see the error. Alternatively,
have you got purift or some other bounds checking software that might
help you track the problem?
Regards,
Peter.

SQL post-install scripts when restoring RMAN backup to a higher version
Hi,
If I've an RMAN backupset taken from, say an 11.2.0.3.0 DB, and I want to restore this to an 11.2.0.4.5 DB, I know I'll have to open in upgrade mode, and run the SQL components of the OJVM PSU along with the January 2015 PSU after the restore completes.
Is there anything specific about the order of catbundle, utlrp, utli112 and OJVM postinstall scripts that need running after catproc?
I'm guessing it needs to be:
catproc->utli112->OJVM PSU->catbundle->utlrp
But thought I'd check just in case there's something specific I've missed.
Thanks,
PhilFor RMAN restore on higher version, you can follow below steps.
SQL> alter database mount;
Database altered.
SQL> recover database until cancel using BACKUP CONTROLFILE ;
----some log files will be applied here, at the end, give cancel----------------
Specify log: {<RET>=suggested | filename | AUTO | CANCEL}
CANCEL
Media recovery cancelled.
SQL> alter database open resetlogs upgrade;
Database altered.
---Now perform manual upgrade steps----
Remember, you need to run utlu112i.sql in source DB and before the upgrade. for catbundle, you can follow the readme instructions.
Hope it helps!!!.
Thanks,

IMAC stalls when performing a backup (finishing backup)
I have a new IMAC 24" and a time capsule. I've tried for the past two weeks to do a backup using Time Machine. My first wireless attempt failed. then i tried connect TC with an ethernet cable. I erased the TC, set ethernet connection on the Airport utility, restarted time machine. It took almost 48 hours and it still was not done. I had a "finishing backup" message for almost 30 hours. So, i somewhat managed to stop the backup, i ran disk utility to verify/repair the sparsebundle. No problem emerged. I couldn't repair permissions as it was not highlighted. I tried to start again time machine and it's been stuck again for a few hours with the same "finishing backup" message. I've read other discussion and tried to follow suggestions, but the problem is not solved. any help?

it seems to still run backups as it ran last night.

really annoying.
i'll try quitting high mem apps before plugging in.. maybe that will help -

The airport time capsule 2TB is only connecting to the web when performing a backup, it just started doing this how do I fix it?
That is a weird one.. never heard of it drop out except doing backups.
Reset the TC to factory settings.
The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup with all short names no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
It should then work fine.. but I need more info if you still have problems.
What modem? Is it a router?
How is the TC connected?
Is the computer running Mavericks? -
RMAN backup with archivelog (pros/cons)
When performing a "backup database with archivelogs" where does rman store the info contained in the archive logs. If I do a backup like this do I still need to keep the archive logs out on disk? Does this increase time to do backups? I have some production databases that are close to 500gb. Wondering what the pros/cons are doing a backup this way.

The information about the logs is stored in the control file.

You have backed them up, right? Archivelogs are not actively used by the running database, right? If you don't delete them after they are backed up, let me know who you buy your disk storage solutions from, as I'd like to buy stock in that company.
Does this increase time to do backups? Anything you do "increases time to do" vs. not doing something. (The most efficient SELECT statement is the one not executed). The question is does this have a practical, measurable degradation of performance that is intolerable to my organization? The answer undoubtedly "no".
I have some production databases that are close to 500gb. Wondering what the pros/cons are doing a backup this way.
Pros are you can recover your database.
Cons are, you can't recover your database.
And it looks like we need to point out that the housekeeping of your archivelogs can and should be handled by rman, not outside of it. Look at "backup archivelog not backed up n times" and "delete archivelog backed up n times", and other variations of 'backup archivelog' and 'delete archivelog'.

Hi
what privilege should user have to perform rman backup.
ImranIf you want to work with RMAN, it needs a SYSDBA login which is a role with the SYS user only. So connect as SYS user when using RMAN. Its not a tool for the users.

Hi Guys,
Can advise on the syntax to perform rman backup of archive logs generated in last 2 days?
Should it be 1 or 2?
thanks!
1. BACKUP ARCHIVELOG UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE-2';
2. BACKUP ARCHIVELOG FROM TIME 'SYSDATE-2';What prevents you from trying both?
I'm not trying to be difficult here but why take the time to ask people in a forum, not even supplying a version number, and not just find out?
It took me less than 60 seconds to cut-and-paste both of your command lines into RMAN and look at the output.
