RMAN backup to 3 different locations
Hi,
I'm trying to backup my database to 3 different locations. If one location is unavailiable backup fails. Is there a possibility to make backup to other 2 locations when one is unavailiable? For example second location from following code is unavailiable. Here is my code:
RUN
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1;
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/backup/location1/%d_DB_%u_%s_%p', '/backup/location2/%d_DB_%u_%s_%p', '/backup/location3/%d_DB_%u_%s_%p';
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 3;
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 3;
BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG SKIP INACCESSIBLE;
}
Hello again;
I was able to find an example of your other question :
If you specify a nonexistent directory, RMAN displays output such as the following:
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================

So it really looks like it errors, ORA-19504 appears to be the key.
Unable to find any Oracle note regarding skip. Interesting question.

Setting backup on two different locations
Hello, people. I am a newbie DBA and at my work place , Using RMAN for my backup strategy I want to set up a backup to two different location ( e.g A:\backup and B:\backup), I have configure two channels, and also set configure device type disk parallelism 2, but I seem not to be getting the result i need.
What does configure device type disk parallelism actually do?
For me to proceed, what do i need to do? thank you.RMAN configuration parameters are:
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 3 DAYS;
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1;
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 2;
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT 'D:\oracle\backup\data_%U', '\\atapp\data\olu\backup\data_%U';
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO 'D:\ORACLE\ORACLE9I\DATABASE\SNCFTESTER.ORA'; # default
this is my configuration and it works fine, A copy of the backup are on both servers, the same size the and there is only copy of the archive log and controlfile on one of the servers which is fine -
Setting backup on two different location
Hello, people. I am a newbie DBA and at my work place , Using RMAN for my backup strategy I want to set up a backup to two different location ( e.g A:\backup and B:\backup), I have configure two channels, and also set configure device type disk parallelism 2, but I seem not to be getting the result i need.
What does configure device type disk parallelism actually do?
For me to proceed, what do i need to do? thank you.Question is, do you want A:\ & B:\ backup locations to by synchronized? If so, you'll need to use the COPIES parameter (could also copy the backupset once the backup is complete). Setting the PARALLELISM alone will not synchronize the two backup locations.
In your case, it would appear that you manually allocated multiple channels with a format specified, therefore RMAN produced the three pieces in A:\ and the one piece in B:\ .
What you'll experience with multiple copies AND multiple channels (parrlelism 2 for example) is that one channel will grab a group of files and begins backing up to the multiple locations while channel two grabs another group of files and begins backing up to the multiple locations at the same time.
Hope this helps. -
Taking rman backup from a different server
HI Al,
Is it possible for us run the rman backup from a different server other than the server on which database exist .
For Ex :
Our database is on server X
But , I want to schedulde the archive backup from the server Y .
How can we do this and is it possible ...

can a time capsule be used to backup in a different location, eg, use it to back up your office computer but have it based at home in case of fire/theft at office location?
Welcome to Apple Communities
You can backup different Macs with it. Just set up the two computers to backup in it -
Restoring RMAN backup on a different server
Hi oracle gurus
i have following scenario
i have a compressed backup set of a database
i want to restore that rman backup on to a different server.
both the server have same version of oracle.and both the server are of 32 bit.
please reply if any more info is required.RESTORE AND RECOVERY PROCEDURE OF PRODUCTION DATABASE BACKUP ON TEST SERVERS
As part of disaster recovery exercise or to test the validity of a RMAN backup, a full restore and recovery of databases can be performed on scratch or test servers utilising the production RMAN backups which have been restored from the tape backups on these test or scratch servers.
This note will illustrate the above procedure by detailing the steps required to restore the backup of a production database (prod1) on a test server linux01 .
The following assumptions are made in this note:
The RMAN backups have been restored from tape backups to the same backup location on the test server as the production server where the backup was originally taken
The identical directory structure as is present on production has been created on the test server. This will apply to not only the location of the database files (data, control files, redo log files), but also to the bdump,cdump, udump and adump locations.
Controlfile autobackup has been enabled. This is important.
Overview
Restore the spfile from the autobackup
Restore the controlfile from the autobackup
Restore the data files
Recover by applying archived redo log files
Open the database with resetlogs
Restore the SPFILE
[oracle@linux01 prod1]$ rman target /
connected to target database (not started)
RMAN> set dbid=4266928631
executing command: SET DBID
RMAN> startup force nomount;
startup failed: ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/dbs/initprod1.ora'
starting Oracle instance without parameter file for retrival of spfile
Oracle instance started
Total System Global Area 159383552 bytes
Fixed Size 2039056 bytes
Variable Size 67109616 bytes
Database Buffers 83886080 bytes
Redo Buffers 6348800 bytes
RMAN> run
2> {SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/u02/backup/prod1/%F';
3> restore spfile from autobackup;
4> }
RMAN> shutdown immediate;
Restore the Control File
In this case, the instance is now being started with the restored spfile. We can create a pfile as well from this spfile is so required.
RMAN> startup nomount
connected to target database (not started)
Oracle instance started
RMAN> set dbid=4266928631
executing command: SET DBID
RMAN> run
2> {SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/u02/backup/prod1/%F';
3> restore controlfile from autobackup;
4> }
RMAN> alter database mount;
database mounted
released channel: ORA_DISK_1
Restore the database
RMAN> restore database;
Recover the database
The recovery will fail at a point where it cannot restore any more archived redo log files.
In this case the last archived log file which has been backed up is sequence 613.
This information can be obtained by issuing a LIST BACKUP OF ARCHIVELOG ALL command.
So RMAN will fail when it tries to apply sequence 614 ….
RMAN> recover database
[oracle@linux01 PROD1]$ rman target /
connected to target database: PROD1 (DBID=4266928631, not open)
RMAN> sql 'alter database open resetlogs';

Rman backup to a remote location
I want to take the rman backup of production database to a remote server.
Means, source and destination servers are located at two different location.
OS: RHEL 4
In metalink, i got the doc id: 292726.1
Could anyone please tell me the detailed steps of "Backup to Remote DISK" heading of meantioned doc or provide me some other useful links ?
Edited by: NKJ on Dec 3, 2008 10:07 AMYou can backup to a remote location assuming you have the remote location appropriately mapped.
However, you may want to check this 10gR2 "database backup" to nfs mounted dir results in ORA-27054 NFS error regarding NFS and RMAN. -

Howto: RMAN catalog backupset in different location
Hi,
How can I tell RMAN catalog that the location of backup set has changed.
For example: after my RMAN backup all my backup pieces went to C:\first_location\
directory. I am using a catalog while running backup.
Now I moved the backup pieces to D:\new_location\ directory. Say C:\first_location\ directory is no longer for some reason. How do I tell my catalog that the backup pieces about the new location D:\new_location\
Catalog, Rman, database all in 10.2 version.
thank you in advanceThank you for your response to my question.
Can someone help me with syntax and usage of new location of backup pieces in a backup set to be reflected in my catalog. Catalog, target and rman all 10g version.
thanks in advance -
RMAN backup, restore across different versions
OS : Solaris 10
I have an RDBMS software only installation of 11.2.0.3 in a server ---> Server B
I have my source DB running on another server which is of version 11.2.0.1.0 -----> Server A
Is it possible to take RMAN backup of the source DB of version 11.2.0.1.0 and use it create a DB of 11.2.0.3.0 in server B ?
Is the same possible for 10.2.0.1.0 to 11.2.0.3.0 ?I believe its this

Restore RMAN backup to a different machine
I'm using an RMAN (hot) backup to recreate the database on a different machine, which is not accessible from the original one. The machines have the same OS (Linux OEL5) and the same Oracle version (10.2.0.3).
This is what I've done so far :
- start the instance in NOMOUNT mode
- restore the controlfile
- mount the database
- restore the database
- recover the database
- open the database with resetlogs option (new incarnation).
So far, so good. Now, some updates have been made on the original database, and some archivelogs have been generatered. Is there a way to apply these archivelogs to the newly created database ?
Thanks and regards.This document refers to recovering a database if the source has done an open resetlogs.
E.g if the source database log sequence is :-
2001
2002
2003
<open resetlogs>
1
2
3
Then the restored database can recover through the switchover.
Once the restored database has done an open resetlogs, then it cannot recovery any more logs from the source. -
Can rman backups be used to restore to a different server
We are using R12 with 10gr2 database
If i take Rman backups, can they be used to restore on some other test server for cloning and bringing that test server upto date like the production.
I am confues and dont know and This is the only reason i dont use rman for backups, instead take cold backups manually every night as they are used every week to clone some other server for testing purpose
Please advice
ThanksHi..
1. Copy the pfile to the new server.
2. startup nomount the database using the pfile.
3. Open a new RMAN session and connect to this database
4. Restore the controlfile, this will bring the database in mount stage
5. Once step 4 is completed, restore and recover the database.
NOTE:-- These are the steps for restoring the database when the RMAN backup pieces are copied to the same location as they are on the main server.If you copy the rman backup to some different location, then you will have to use the CATALOG BACKUPPIECE 'location' command before restoring the database.

Restoring Rman backup on New Host with different directory structure
Hi,
I have a following scenario to clone the database.
1. clone the database on new server
2. source is non - ASM and target is ASM
3. On source incremental level 0 backup taken on disk connecting to catalog, the backup is moved to target host to different directory structure
4. source is running on 32-bit Linux two node Rac and Target is running on 64-bit Linux two node Rac
I did the following steps and getting below error:
1. I copied incremental Level 0 backup to target server(where we need to build new db) to different directory structure
2. On target i created pfile and build the instance, as dbf file are in multiple locations in source i put following tow parameters in init.ora of target database
*.db_file_name_convert =(/u02/oradata/app1p/,+QADATA2/udev/datafile),(/u03/oradata/app1p/,+QADATA1/udev/datafile),(/u12/oradata/app1p/,+QADATA1/udev/datafile,),(/u99/oradata/app1p/,+QADATA1/udev/datafile),(/u09/oradata/app1p/,+QADATA1/udev/datafile),(/u14/oradata/app1p/,+QADATA1/udev/datafile),(/u07/oradata/app1p/,+QADATA1/udev/datafile),(/u06/oradata/prod/,+QADATA1/udev/datafile'),(/u05/oradata/app1p/,+QADATA1/udev/datafile)
*.log_file_name_convert =("/u99/oradata/app1p/","+QADATA2/udev/onlinelog/")
3. connected to rman -->> started db in nomount -->> restored the controlfile --> cataloged the backup piece and then i am trying to restore
All the above steps i did using the Doc id *How To Restore Rman Backups On A Different Node When The Directory Structures Are Different [ID 419137.1]*
script i am using is :

Standby database from RMAN backup
I have been assigned to create a standby database from our RMAN backups in a different machine, as this is my first attempt at recovering, I am struggling a bit. I would appreciate if someone can throw any light on what dumb mistakeI am doing here. I ahve absolutely no control over the back up script which is done by my vendor, but can do anything in the reocvery portion. I did try going through the documentaiton and other help available for the last 2 days.
Database : Oracle 10G R2
OS : Windows Server 2003
My backup script is
configure channel device type disk format 'J:\RMAN\RMAN_df_%U' maxpiecesize 2048M;
SQL "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE";
SQL "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE";
backup database;
SQL "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE";
SQL "ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE";
backup current controlfile for standby FORMAT='J:\RMAN\RMAN_sc_%U';
For recovery of a standby database,
I have copied the the back up pieces and the archive logs to the standby server where I have just created an instance with the same name as production db.
set ORACLE_SID=NGINPROD

I don't see ArchiveLog backups being done by the vendor's script. How do you backup the ArchiveLogs ?
In your post you state that you have copied the ArchiveLogs. Are they copied to the same log_archive_dest location ? RMAN needs to be "aware" of them. You can use the "CATALOG" command in RMAN to register them into the controlfile.

A Standby Database uses a Standby Controlfile which is created from the Primary (with the "ALTER DATABASE CREATE STANDBY CONTROLFILE AS 'locaion';" command) and then copied over to the Standby server.
