RMAN Restore on a new system

Hi,
We are planning to impletment RMAN backups on our production systems. We took a RMAN backup and wanted to restore into another server using different sid and db name, without disturbing the running production database. We came across some errors and we need some help.
Oracle Version - 9.2.0.7
OS - Windows 2003
Envirnoment
=========
Host A - DB1
Host B - DB2 (Directory sturcture is different)
Host C - Catalog
Step 1. I took a full backup of DB1 on Host A connected to the catalog.
Step 2. Copied the pfile and backup files from Host A to Host B.
Step 3. Changed db_name, instance_name in Host B pfile.
Step 4. Created oracle instance using oradim utility.
Step 5. Started rman utiliy - rman target /
Step 6. Resorted Controlfile
Step 7. Mount database <---- Here we get an error
Let me know if the above steps are wrong.

If the database is on a separate server, then you shouldn't need to worry about the db_name being the same. But if you are determined to have a new database name, you could restore the database with the same database name and then change it with the nid utility.
Check Specifying Filenames When Restoring to a New Host to accommodate a new directory structure.

i would like to ask if there is something like a tutorial that explains the following:
1. Backup DB with rman
2. Move all the Backup files to a new Computer
3. Create a new instance on this computer and restore the DB
I'm especially not sure about creating the new instance...what do you have to take care of ? Do have any chance to restore the DB if you don't know the instance name of the original DB ? Will it work if the new computer has a different hostname ?

Or we can restore it even having different directory structure on new system.

Special Patch for 10.2 in order to do an rman restore upgrade to 11gR2

Am about to start on the 11gR2 upgrade process and was talking with some dba-friends in other companies to learn what not to do , etc. I had mentioned that I wanted to do an RMAN restore then alter resetlogs upgrade and let the upgrade process automatically take me to 11gR2. He mentioned that he had tried that but had run into an rman error when 10g did not have some table in the data dictionary, but there should be a patch for that. Essentially he said the patch would put the pre-11g table needed for an rman restore upgrade. He didnt have the information available and has yet to get back to me, and I have searched metalink looking for it with no luck.
Has anyone else hit this error and could provide either the metalink article, however , better the patch number i need. I will be going from 10.2.0.3 to 11gR2 via an rman restore to a remote system and then issuing an alter ....resetlogs upgrade command.

9i Database - Restore to a new host, validating RMAN backup

Hi all,
I could use your help, for any of you who remember how to do this in 9i. On one of my production databases, running 9.2.0.6.0, I have a nightly RMAN script that writes the backup to a large shared drive (this is on a Windows 2003 server). This backup uses a recovery catalog.
I have a test server, and I want to try and restore last night's backup on this test server, without touching the recovery catalog - purely as a means to go through the recovery process, and to validate our backups (this is also for SOX compliance, as this database is for the financial system).
I have been looking through the 9i documentation, and was hoping to have some detailed steps here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmrecov.htm#1007514
but I don't see a lot of information there.
I believe that this should be a rather simple process. On the test server, I have installed the 9.2.0.6 software, and created the Oracle Service using the same name as production. The test server can also see the shared drive that houses the backup files from the production system.

Many thanks for the helpful replies so far, Hemant!! I had to shelve this issue for a few days, back at it today.
I have made some progress, I am able to restore the control file now - what I am doing, is copying the autobackup controlfile from the network drive over onto the server locally (E:\oracle\ora92\database\BACKUPCONTROL.ORA), then I am able to restore the controlfile with this:
restore controlfile from 'E:\oracle\ora92\database\BACKUPCONTROL.ORA';
And I can see that it restores all 3 of my controlfiles.
The next step would be to do the database restore. When I issue the "restore database;" command, I can see that it lists out all of the datafiles that it needs to restore from the backup set, but then after about a minute, I see these error messages pop up:

When I looked up those last 2 error codes on Metalink, I see document ID 213858.1 that looks like this normally happens when the backup piece that has Read-Only permissions. I have confirmed that the backup files on the network drive are not Read-Only, I have full Read/Write privileges on them. So once again, I am stumped.
Any thoughts? I might go ahead and log an SR for this, to try and get it resolved.

I am having to install tbird again on a new system, I copied and backup-ed my previous emails. When I view my copies and/or restored email files are empty. Why?

I am having to install tbird again on a new system, I copied and backup-ed my previous emails. When I view my copies and/or restored email files they are empty, nothing is displayed and the window shows message of being empty. I an sure of the backup and of my copy/paste steps. Where and/or what has happened to my emails? I also searched each disk and all files for email extensions (*.mozmsgs and *.sbd and *.sbf) with no results. I can not find a way to restore over 10 years worth of very important emails. Can someone please help me recover what I know is their? All my emails in Seamonkey are on another system (the one I replaced with new win7 pro 64 i7 based system) and all the emails I had in tbird, before having to reinstall everything on new system due to something that happened to the os, are the copied and backup-ed files that are showing empty. Prior to new install all old Seamonkey emails transferred to tbird and all the tbird emails prior were their and were the copied/backup-ed files showing empty now. This is turning into my worst experience and nightmare in over 25 years of systems. I am really lost on this one. please help....

Are you saying you split your profile between C and D drive, perhaps through specifying a location in the account settings.
BTW.
*.mozmsgs useless duplicate files created for windows search integration. Simply wasted space on the disk.
*.sbd a folder indicating the presence of a sub folder (contains no mail at all.
*.sbf (I don't know that one.
*.msf an index of mail. contains tags, but otherwise useless and will be recreated when the mail is loaded in Thunderbird so it can display the mail list.
*. that is no file extension. You mail in files with the same name as the folders they came from.

Using RMAN restore the database on a new host in ASM

I am trying to restore a database without using RMAN database duplicate. I want to do set new name for datafile and rename log file for online logs and change database name at last using NID.

Compressed backup is copied to destination server and I am trying to restore database using RMAN. Here is my init.ora file

when I am trying to restore control file. It creates an ASM alias name in +DATA_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl01.dbf',+RECO_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl02.dbf',' and +DATA_DM01/EMERALD/controlfile/cntrl03.dbf' but It creates fully Qualified ASM Filename under +DATA_DM01/APSPROD and +RECO_DM01/

Restore CSM 4.2 DB to CSM 4.3 DB brand new system - failed

Restore CSM 4.2 DB to a brand new CSM 4.3 patch 1 failed
I already tried 4 times backkups from the CSM 4.2 system to restore to the new CSM 4.3 patch 1 but all restores failed with :
uncommitted data
I read the install.guide about pending jobs and I think there are no pending jobs at the Backup
Can it be that I have to deinstall RME and MCP before I make a backup from the CSM 4.2 system to avoid the error : uncommitted data ?

restore to CSM 4.3 works if I did the backup from the 4.2 system DB via CMD , If I backup the 4.2 system via the CSM GUI it did not work .

Trying to figure out how to restore an iPhoto Library from a backup onto a new system.

I had an old imac that died but I have backups of everything. I want to restore the iPhoto Libary to another system on another login
The old system was an iMac that was running I think either 10.5.8 or 10.6 and I think iPhoto6. I want to restore from a backup onto a newer iMac running 10.8.1 with iPhoto 9.3.2. When I go to the backup I see the iphoto libray, but it does not show the icon I was expecting. What I see is
Not the icon I thought I would see. When I double click I get a terminal window and I can see all of the files
So how can I get these photos onto my new system?

The backup was made via Time Machine. I want to take an account from an old machine to a different newer machine in the house. I tried using the migration assitant to move files onto the new system and all seems well except for photos. When iPhoto startes up it appears to recognize the photos and I can see thumbnails when I flip through, but I do not see full sized photos. How can i see all of the full sixe photos and make sure the conversion pulled my pictures over?

I did a system upgrade (clean install) to Snow Leopard. I now have lost all of my Firefox bookmarks. Should they be somewhere in my backup files (on an external drive)? How do I locate them? And, how do I restore them to Firefox in the new system?

Where would the Bookmarks be filed in my system backup? Can I move them to the new system (Internal drive)?

Are you saying you still have access to the backup? If you do, you should take a look at [[Backing up your information]]. It will show you where all of your personal information is stored in Firefox and how you can copy it to a new install.

No luck. The error message is different but the result is the same... it keeps failing.

RMAN Restore Error - media recovery requesting unknown log: thread 1 seq 7

Im using RMAN to copy a database to another server. The new server is IDENTICAL to the old one. By identical I mean it has the same sever name, ip address, operating system, Oracle version and directory structure.
The new server already has the instance created, (same name as the old server instance, paths etc)
The backup files have been manually restored to the new server, same locations as they were on the old one. ( RMAN did an automatic controlfile backup and also the archivelogs on the old server ).
Ive restored the control file on the new server from the RMAN backup pieces.
Ive catalogued the RMAN backup pieces on the new server.
I know the last sequence available in the archivelogs backup by running on the new server :

So far its all going swimmingly well.
Now I want to restore the datafiles and recover. So I ran :
RMAN run { restore database; recover database; alter database open resetlogs; }
This gave me the output below which goes great but I get a final error, I think the error is because its looking for an archive log thats not in the backup set, but it should be. However, I think SCN 560851 is for a log that hadnt been created yet on the old server when the backup was ran ?
How do I address resolving the error ? Its worth pointing out log, "archive log filename=C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\SAT\ARCHIVELOG
\2011_05_11\O1_MF_1_6_6WOK1X4W_.ARC recid=10 stamp=750881741" isnt on the old server either which is why its not in the backup set.
I can do a alter database open reset logs but Id prefer to know why its failing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You need to do incomplete recovery i.e. to ask RMAN to restore/recover to some specific point in time. This is usually done with some UNTIL clause or SET UNTIL statement. Example in your case:

Why is Oracle RMAN restoring a datafile to a different diskgroup?

Hello,
When I was trying an RMAN restore of a datafile, I found it is restoring the datafile to a new location. Why is Oracle restoring a datafile to a different diskgroup instead of restoring to the original diskgroup where the datafile was originally present?
1) I have a datafile '+DATA3/slob1/datafile/undotbs2.260.819992871' which is on +DATA3 diskgroup
2) I am taking a backup on to +FRA diskgroup
3) I then offline and delete the datafile 5 using asmcmd to simulate the loss of a datafile
4) I perform restore and recover of datafile 5 from the backup set on +FRA
5) Unfortunately the datafile got restored on to +FRA instead of +DATA3. I realize that the file name can change because it is going to be a new file on ASM but I would assume this will be on the same diskgroup atleast since the control file has it pointing to '+DATA3/slob1/datafile/undotbs2.260.819992871' before restoration.
When I tested on file system, this gets restored on to file system correctly.
Anyone has any idea why the datafile was restored on to +FRA instead of +DATA3?

Backup and restore to a new server

Hello,
I have a new server that I would like to copied the production DB. This is what I have so far
1: A backup of the production Db (User manage backup -- no RMAN)
2: have the redo logs
3: I install and configure the server and a test database on the new system (SOLARIS)
Can some give me some hints on how to restore the backed-up database to my new system from the shell prompt? I don't have the DBconsole or GUI tool (my Admin block most of the ports....

A cold backup taken how? This is not as simple as it would be if you were a DBA and knew what you were working with.
Assuming I had a copy of the files I would be recreating directory paths, creating control files, setting environment variables, etc.

It is used to create a physical standby which is not what you want but it shows the basic steps you need for backing up the primary
production database and for creating a duplicate. Hopefully this will help you with your research.
