  • Office files protected with AD RMS Client / SDK and Office

    Hello,
I'm facing a strange issue when it comes to open an office file that was protected with AD RMS Client (to be precise, with an application built with AD RMS SDK 2.1). I would like to understand the reasons behind this issue (maybe some missing or wrong configuration)
or if this is just a gui only problem that does not affect the correct behaviour of the whole suite.
    I'm not using templates.
If I protect an office file directly from MS Word (for example, but we have the same with Excel and Powerpoint) and save it, then I can close it and re-open it. The following infobar is displayed:
Now with AD RMS SDK 2.1 we have developed a standalone program that applies the same permissions on office files via the AD RMS Client. When the file is re-opened, the following infobar is displayed:
"Do Not Forward" is shown, no reference to email permissions was added by the client. The description is wrong too, as print permission has been granted, for example.
    Is this behaviour correct?
    How is this infobar created?
Is there a setting (either in client or in server) that may be wrong, and that leads to this issue?
    Thank you,
     Massimiliano

Thanks to Microsoft response, this issue has been resolved.
The license handle needs some additional properties to be set, in order for Office to display this information correctly.
    IpcSetLicenseProperty(licenseHandle, FALSE, IPC_LI_DESCRIPTOR, pIpcTemplateInfo);
The last parameter is a PIPC_TEMPLATE_INFO pointer to a structure of type IPC_TEMPLATE_INFO where
wszName and wszDescription are filled with valid values.

  • Specific AD RMS Templates show on Office 2010

    Hi,
I've just configured AD RMS running W2012R2.
All Template is showing in all office applications even that templates is for email (i.e. Do not reply - only can forward) or documents (i.e. view and print - only can view and print).
I want to specific a template that shows on office application. in example i want to show only "Do not reply" template on Outlook and only "view and print" Template on Word. I use Microsoft Office 2010 SP2
Can i do that? if there is unable, can you tell me why?
    Thanks & Regards
    Fakhri

I'll give you the outlines then you can go ahead
Open the template (XML file) then check the syntax to make it public and change it )
then go to GPO and apply it to the users to need
this is the answer as I thought your question

  • AD RMS 2012 Templates/Permissions [Option] is not visible at Outlook 2013 in Nokia Windows 8 Mobile Device

I have AD RMS 2012 Server, its working fine by applying restricted Templates/Permissions on OWA, Outlook & other MS Office Tools (Word Excel, PowerPoint). But the AD RMS Templates/Permissions [Option] is not visible at Outlook 2013 in Nokia Windows
    8 Mobile Device.
Actually I would like to protect email with RMS templates (defined by me on AD RMS 2012 Server) but the [Permission] tab is not visible at Outlook 2013 in Nokia Windows 8 Mobile Device.
But I can do same with Android OS in Samsung Galaxy Mobile Device & I can see [Permission] tab as well to protect an email messages.
    Any idea??

Currently, you can't use WP 8 to protect docs/emails with ADRMS templates. YOu can however use transport rules on Exchange server side to configure automatic ADRMS protection.

  • AD RMS user specific permission

    Hi
I have installed and configured AD RMS in Windows 2008 server.
Currently all users can apply templates / assign permissions for any office files / outlook mail.
Now my requirement is to restrict this access to a group of people who can actually set the permissions for any office file or outlook mail.
    How to achieve this ?
In group policy, i can either restrict everyone or none. But not for group of people.
This is because, if i enable for all, every outlook client will have access to set permissions for every mail they send and it will become a routine for each mail that comes with do not forward restrictions.
    regards Sundaresan.C

I made it by creating a separate OU and move specific users to this OU. And created a GP for this OU and provided Access to apply RMS templates . For all other OU's, i have made the option "Prevent users to change the RMS permissions" under Office 2010 ADM
    template in GP.
    It works..
Only thing is that i cant separate outlook and Office files with RMS permissions. Both are combined.

  • Old AD RMS template still displayed in OWA which were already deleted

    Hi,
Currently, I'm having a problem where a deleted template still can be view & select when trying to apply RMS protection. I have checked the template distribution folder & run the Get-RMSTemplate to see whether the template is presented or not (which
    is not)
As you can see from the picture above. I have already disabled the rms, still we can see the template. Some of the template listed above have been already deleted & some just come pop in out of no where. Please, i really need some help here. Thanks in
    advance

Depending on what version of Exchange this is, you might be able to use:
    Set-IrmConfiguraton -RefreshServerCertificates
It sounds like this will refresh the templates as well:
    The
    RefreshServerCertificates switch clears all
Rights Account Certificates (RACs), Computer Licensor Certificates (CLCs),
and cached AD RMS templates from all Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 or
Exchange Server 2013 servers in the organization. Clearing RACs, CLCs, and
cached templates may be required during troubleshooting or in the event of a
change of keys on the AD RMS cluster in your organization.
I would be careful about actually deleting templates.  Preferably you should archive them.  If messages actually were protected with those templates and they are deleted, they will be inaccessible.

  • AD RMS Philosophy.

Hi everyone, how do people work with RMS in the real world?
I’m going to make the presumption that in a company you can’t guarantee people not to steal documents. You can only make it more difficult for people to steal documents. When I say steal I mean that a person that has permission to a document,
simply copies-mails, drop box, etc, this documents to someone outside the company without authorization to read this document.
Assuming this let’s get to the point.
I have a client who has thousands of documents that are stored of lots of files shares. Inside these file shares there are many folders and subfolders and many of these subfolders have inheritance disabled.
The client wants to protect every existing document and new documents, so that if the documents leave the company, these will be RMS protected.
One simple way to do this is with File Server Resource Manager and File Management Tasks. With these tools you could apply a RMS policy template to the existing files and new files under a certain folder. Not sure of the performance impact
on the file servers for thousands of files. The policy template would have the read, edit, save permisions plus the NTFS permissions (the combination of most restrictive would win). Inside the company the users would work as usual. If someone manages to bypass
company’s protection and steal a document, it would be useless because it has RMS and the RMS server is not published to the internet.
Would this be a correct approach?
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ivan Mckenzie

    Hi Ivan,
I am not sure about the term "steal documents".
RMS is first of all a way to protect documents regardless if they are in motion or stored on a disk, regardless if the data is in a email , or on a thumb drive. The protection always "travels" with. So that helps honest people to stay honest and a great
way to bring security policies to life. Where it does not help if someone makes a screenshot with a smartphone etc.
You might think again about the whole in the company and remote thing, because you if users send out emails the data is outside of the companies network. One other thing with Exchange and Outlook RMS has also a pre-licensing, what allows users to read emails
they have just received before they left the office on the road. So you would have to disable all this (I call it a convenience feature).

  • AD RMS Offline - Use license for each file?

    Hello.
We have protected with AD RMS many Excel files, all with the same RMS template and permissions. This template include a use license with expiration in 15 days.
I need to allow opening any of this files while offline. The problem is that I think the use license acquired when opening an Excel file is just for that document, not for all the documents protected with the same template.
How can I get sure, all users would open without forcing RMS sever connection when they are offline?
I have many users that should work offline, and there are more than 200 files, so I cannot explain them to open all files every 14 days for avoid license expiration.
    What can I do?

    Hi,
I dont think that that is possible. On one hand you want that users can still access the file and on the other hand you do not want that. Btw from your screenshot setting the use license to max 1 day means a user needs to get a new use license after one
day and for that he/she has to be authenticated again. But it is not the expiration of the content. For the content expiration it does not matter if you are online or offline.
Those settings are embedded in the document and once the template is applied you can only change it in the document but not in the database.
    Hope that helps,
    Lutz

  • AD RMS, the black hole in Microsoft Licensing

    Hello,
I have read the Product Use Rights from A to Z, I have searched the web everywhere, I have asked the Microsoft Partner Support and some local Microsoftees and I cannot find a single rule about AD RMS Licensing!
All I found is that AD RMS is an additive CAL to Windows Server. That means it is an additionnal product and does'nt have to be company-wide. Which means we need some rules to decide whether a user/device needs a CAL or not. But there isn't any!
Well to be honest, there is one rule, applying to Windows Server Essentials, a product I have never seen in production with AD RMS personnally...
Even if we assume it is a mistake and that "Windows Server Essentials" rule applies to Windows Server Standard and Datacenter, the licensing headache goes further ahead with AD RMS-aware applications. Like Microsoft Office or Microsoft Exchange.
Licensing AD RMS with Office is somewhat covered by some TechNet articles, where we can guess that only the users/devices creating protected documents need Office Pro Plus licenses when readers/reviewers can use Office Standard or Office Web Apps. Still,
nothing is said about the undelying AD RMS CALs. Who needs some? Users creating, probably. But what about the others?
Licensing AD RMS with Exchange is much less documented, as I can only find a table saying some IPM features require the Exchange Enterprise CAL. But who needs the Enterprise CAL? The users creating the protected messages in Outlook? The
users creating the tranport rules in Exchange? All the users reading the protected messages? And again, nothing is said about the underlying AD RMS CALs.
Any help on those licensing topics would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi Gilles,
I am sorry but it's not 100% clear what the center of your concerns entirely or what you are trying to do here. That said, I will try to answer you as best I can.
The licensing requirements for the ability to protect and consume content using AD RMS in AD RMS-aware applications under Windows operating systems is described here in the following topic on
    AD RMS Client Requirements  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772753(v=WS.10).aspx:
The Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) client is included with the Windows Vista®, Windows® 7, Windows Server® 2008, and Windows Server® 2008 R2 operating systems. If you are using Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003
as your client operating system, a compatible version of the AD RMS client is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center Web site.
The AD RMS client can be used with the AD RMS server role included in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 or with previous versions of RMS running on Windows Server 2003.
I should also mention that the AD RMS Client is also included and supported for Windows 8 and the AD RMS server role is also available in Windows Server 2012 as well.
To licensing and ability to protect and consume content using IRM features (which are typically enabled using an AD RMS deployment but can also use Windows Azure AD Rights Management) in other products such as Microsoft Office or Microsoft Exchange does
require specific versions of those products. For more information, the following links may be helpful:

AD RMS and Microsoft Office Deployment Considerations
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772697(WS.10).aspx
There is not an additional need to specifically license AD RMS for use in supporting IRM in Exchange. The specific requirements for deployment in Exchange are covered in the Exchange documentation:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638140.aspx#reqs

  • RMS with FCI

    Hi
Few queries about AD RMS , really appreciate if somebody help me on this
When I try to add a file classification [using 2012 R2 FCI] to RMS protected files , it fails ..if I keep the same file as not AD RMS protected , the classification rule work and apply the classification..Could I know why it fails , I already enabled
& added my file server into RMS super users group...
I created a file management task to apply RMS template to classified files and it work perfectly , but again if the file is already applied with a different AD RMS template, then my management task is not changing that template to what I specified in
    the task
In TUD environment , how the client in forest1 know about the licensing server in forest2 which issued the license to author who is located in the forest2 ? pls give me some URL/info about AD RMS client discovery in TUD env
    Thanks & Regards
    Krishna

If it's protected by another RMS server (with exchanged TUD) then Super User isn't going to help. The license will be requested against the other RMS server and that user will not exist there.
    Is that the scenario?

  • The Data Received from the server running AD RMS didn't match the expected format.contact your system administrator for further investigation.

    Hi All,
We Have implemented AD RMS in our organisation recently. But the Problem we are facing here many users those are Ms office 2013 we will get the error"The Data Received from the server running AD RMS didn't match the expected format.contact
your system administrator for further investigation." and those who are in Ms office 2010 Professional it says
"The service is Temporally unavailable.Ensure the you have   connectivity to this server. This error could be caused if you are working offline.Proxy setting are preventing your connection or intermittent network issue."
      Below are the workaround did,
1.Able to reach to Our pipeline ADRMS cluster.
    2.We have a valid Certificate.
3.if we type https://adrms.ourdomain.com its working fine.
4.Manually put the registry setting for effected computers.
    5. Applied the Hotfixes:MicrosoftFixit50903,KB2627273.
Kindly help or suggest us to resolve the above issue as many computers in domain are not working with IRM.

  • Doubts regarding RMS RecordStore

    hi,
i want to know whether it is possible to extend a class that has a private constructor.
more specifically, i am building a vocab-builder-cum-quiz application for mobile phones using J2ME (MIDP). in the design phase, i identified one base class as the "GenericDatabase" class.
the 2 database classes (1 for Vocabulary builder and 1 for quiz appli) need to be derived from this class. even otherwise, i need these 2 classes to atleast derive from RecordStore class (javax.microedition.rms.RecordStore). but when i tried extending RecordStore, i got a compiler error which says " RecordStore(String,String, boolean) not applicable to ()".
cud someone please help me out here?

    hi there,
thanx for the idea. i hv now used an object of RecordStore in my GenericDatabase class. and i hv put a wrapper around so to other classes the 2 database classes appear as i intend them to.
now i hv one more problem. and that is the bytecode size. i was going through another topic on this forum itself and evryone seemed to shun OO Design practices in favour of procedure-ish programming when it came to J2ME in order to minimize bytecode size.
so, can anyone give me some suggestions?

  • Expressway LIC-EXP-RMS Rich Media Session license requirements

I can't seem to find the answer documented anywhere on this. The docs state:
Each concurrent call session terminating on a system not using Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Business Edition or Cisco HCS (for example, B2B calls and Jabber Guest) requires a Cisco Expressway Rich Media Session license. Also, each concurrent call requiring interworking also requires a Cisco Expressway Rich Media Session license. Examples of such calls include H.323-to-SIP interworked calls or H.264 SVC-to-H.264 AVC calls.
So assuming I have an EX90 registered to my CUCM, and I want to place a call that terminates at some external companies video endpoint across the internet, by way of my Expressway Core and Expressway Edge pair, do I need the LIC-EXP-RMS just on the Expressway E, or do I need the license on both boxes?
If it's the latter, do you have to pay for 2 sessions to get 1 call like described, or can the same license be applied to both boxes (although it can only be registered/bound to one serial number) ?
Just the answer would be great, link(s) to supporting documentation would be even better.
    Thanks,
    Chad Marsh

I don't follow why it would use the RMS license on the C and not the E.
If the call I described were in the reverse direction, (from public external endpoint to CUCM-registered endpoint) would the RMS license then be needed on the Expressway-E?
A co-worker forwarded me a preso from Cisco TME tneumann that states the following, which doesn't really agree with your answer:
    <quote>
Rich Media Session licenses are consumed for either traversal or non-traversal call types
A traversal call will require a Rich Media Sessions license on both the Expressway E and Expressway C
    </quote>
There must be some call flow scenarios published somewhere in Cisco that documents this license usage?

  • RMS: On-Premise vs Azure

    Hi,
We are looking at whether to implement RMS either with Azure Cloud and on-premise. Does anyone has a list of technical difference & comparisons of pros-cons when it comes to on-premise versus Azure cloud?
    Thank You.

    Hi Warrior -
The two are very similar in terms of how they work and the necessary components.  There are some feature differences at the moment, which are covered here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj739831.aspx
In terms of pros and cons, beyond the article covered there, Azure RMS is available as a subscription service, with limited on-premises components to deploy.  AD RMS is available as an on-premises server role.  So in addition to the above, the
pros and cons of deploying something in the cloud or on-premises also apply.
    I hope that helps!
