Roaming between RV220W wireless router and WAP121 Access Point

Hello, I have recently purchased a RV220W wireless router and a WAP121 access point and i would like to allow my users to "roam" between the two networks as needed (so when the user is closer to whichever one they connect to that one since it has a better signal). For the most part I only have experience in cisco IOS and in actual routers not the wireless stuff so my knowledge has not exactly transfered over well.

William,
WDS will not work between the RV220W and WAP121 due to incompatible chipsets. The RV220W can be repeated using WDS by another RV220W or RV180W only. You will need to plug the WAP121 into the RV220W or try WorkGroup Bridge mode to repeat the signal.
Regarding roaming, the router or AP are not aware of each other and do not have the capability to disconnect a client and help them connect to the AP with the stronger signal. The client will switch to the stronger AP only when the original signal is lost.
The Aironet (enterprise) devices have the ability to utilize a wireless LAN controller which can help keep devices connected to the stronger signal and allow truly seamless roaming between APs.

  • Roaming between E3000 wireless router and WAP300N

    Hi all
The Linksys router I’ve got in my office room at home is providing poor coverage in my living room. Thus I’ve purchased a WAP300N and connected it by wire to the build-in 4 port switch of my Router (E3000). The set-up is providing a significant improvement in the living room, but… it seems as if the two wireless access points are “competing” over the “clients”.
When I move from the office room into the living room, my wireless equipment seems to be stuck on the connection to the wireless router in the office room – even though the signal from the WAP300N in the living room is much stronger.
The situation is exactly the same, when I move from the living room to the office room – the wireless equipment is stock on the weak signal from the living room.
I have to turn off and on the radio on my wireless equipment to get them to connect to the strongest signal.
Is there a way to make the “roaming” between wireless access points more smooth?
    Kind regards
    vonRasmussen

    vonRasmussen :
Change the channel on the WAP or your router are on.
Not the 802.11?, but the transmission channels, which are probably transmitting on the same channel. I find the best results are at lease 2 numbers apart. if on is transmitting on channel 1 the next closest will be on 3. With multiple WAPs in a large area you would have to play Sudoko to make sure every one is 2 channels apart.
    to quote Lisa Phifer:
    Multiple access point configuration: Distinguish transmission signals;
Why should you access points use different channels? In a typical micro-cell Wlan, adjacent APs should always use non-overlapping channels, ( e.g., 1 ,6 ,11), to avoid co-channel interference.
    Good Luck.

  • Setting wireless router as an access point

I'm trying to set up a wireless router as an access point for a wired router. The wired portion of the network is fine and the internet connection is working.  The laptop sees the wireless router and can log in to it.  However, the wireless router does not receive an internet connection and cannot "see" the wired portion of the network. I cannot log into the wireless router from one of the wired computers.
Below are the settings I'm using:
    Wired router--Linksys BEFSR41v3
     Obtain ID Automatically
     192.168.0.1
     255.255.255.0
     Local DHCP enabled
     Start # 192.168.0.100
     RIP Disabled
     UPnP off
    Wirless router--Linksys WRT54GS
     Automatic Conifguration DHCP
     192.168.0.2
     255.255.255.0
     DHCP Server off
     Firewall/NAT off
     UPnP off
Set to Router function (rather than Gateway)
I have had to set the laptop to a static IP, since it keeps revereting to a default IP.  It is set to 192.168.0.102, 255.255.255.0, Gateway=192.168.0.1, DNS=192.168.0.1
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As you have Disabled the DHCP Server on the Router and the Changed the IP on the Router to 192.168.0.2. the only thing remaining is the Connection part that is you need the Connect the BEFSR41 router from the Number one port to the Number one of WRT54GS that should Work. Please remove the Static IP Address from the Computers.

    A bug in common WAP4410N and WRVS4400Nv2
I will call this a functional bug
The connection control should have an input box with buttons for Add || Edit || Delete and you should enter the MAC Address in and click add and this should populate a read only textarea so you are NOT limited to just 20 client computers. Basically this should work like the Setup_lan.htm in WRVS4400Nv2 Static IP Mapping but instead of doing mapping just add/subtract/edit Mac addresses and you can fit a lot more than 20.
This is a Major limitation considering I paid pretty good money for this router and access point, I should have vertually limited clients
So back to the Setup_lan.htm in WRVS4400Nv2 static IP mapping......I LOVE this feature and the way it was implemented.....NICE JOB GUYS

  • Need to backup Time Capsule, (3rd Gen) 7.6.1 used as wireless router and network drive

I use Time Capsule, 802.11n (3rd Gen) 7.6.1 (1Tb) as a wireless router and a network drive. I do not use Time Machine at all. How do I create a backup of the files housed on the Time Capsule to an external drive?
Also, why does the use of Time Capsule as a network drive seem to be such an usual configuration? The configuration makes sense to me, aside from the inability to automatically back up the Time Capsule itself to a cloud or other drive, which, to me, is what really makes no sense at all. Is there something else I should be using? I'm not too familiar with the wisest way to set up a home network. I just know I like to wirelessly have access to my files from multiple computers within my household as opposed to saving files on any one computer locally.
Thanks for your assistance and advise!
    erinblythe

You could connect a USB hard-drive to the USB port on the TimeCapsule and Enable Disk Sharing on both the TC's Built in Drive as well as the USB connected one.
Then these drives can be mounted using finder and files copied between them as needed.
The main advantage of time-machine is - automation(like you mentioned) + to be able to go back in time - i.e. ability to restore files from a certain date/time. Multiple versions are available for restore.
Also in Mountain Lion - You can restore your mac from a time machine backup very easily - it is one of the options when you boot to the Recovery Partition (ditto when you boot ML from DVD/USB)
    Hope this helps.

  • Wireless router and base station help

Hello fellas -- I'll really, really appreciate any help I can get with this, so thanks in advance for any advice given. Here we go...
I purchased a MacBook (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 160GB hard drive, 2GB RAM) about two months ago. It runs Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.9). Previously, I had a Sony Vaio desktop in my downstairs bedroom, and an HP Pavilion desktop in my mom's office upstairs. I have Comcast "high-speed" cable internet service. Downstairs (where the Vaio was) I have a surfboard cable modem with three cords coming out of the back: 1.) a power cord (obviously); 2.) a cable cord that runs into the wall for internet service; and 3.) an ethernet-looking network cable. This ethernet/network cable would have normally run right out the back of the surfboard cable modem and into the network port on the back of my Sony Vaio, but in order to provide internet service for my mom's HP upstairs, the network cable went from the back of the surboard modem and into a D-Link wireless router that we bought. Another network cable then went from the D-Link wireless router into the network port on the back of my Vaio. This provided both my Vaio and my mom's HP with good, steady cable internet access.
When I bought this new MacBook, it came with an AirPort Extreme card (no base station yet) that allowed me pick up on the wireless signal from the D-Link wireless router and this provided me with internet service. To connect to the internet, I would connect to the wireless network that my computer called "default." By this point, I had shut down and unplugged my Vaio, so it's out of the picture now -- the MacBook has replaced it. However, I left the surfboard cable moden and the D-Link wireless router plugged in, and this way I was able to connect to the default network wirelessly with my MacBook, and my mom was still provided with wireless service from the D-Link router on her HP upstairs. This worked great for awhile, until eventually this default network started getting rediculously slow and started disconnecting itself every 30 to 45 seconds -- literally. For this reason, I went out and bought an AirPort Extreme Base Station at my local Apple Store.
First, to make sure it worked, I unplugged the network cable (the one coming from the back of the surfboard cable modem) from the back of the D-Link wireless router and I plugged it directly into the base station I just bought. In other words, I took the D-Link router out of the picture and plugged the base station directly into my surfboard cable modem. This worked great, and it's how I'm connected to the internet as we speak -- it's providing me with steady, fast service. Instead of connecting to the default wireless network that was slowing me down before, I now connect to the base station's network, called "Apple Network 2b1d46." There's only one problem, though -- it involved taking the D-Link wireless router out of the picture, so now my mom can't get on the internet with her HP. The solution seemed very simple -- instead of plugging the surfboard cable modem directly into the base station, I would plug the surfboard modem into the D-Link wireless router, and then plug that into the base station. I saw no reason why this wouldn't work, and I still don't, but for whatever reason, it didn't.
This is where I need help. When I try to plug it in through the router like that, I simply can't get on the internet. Everything else works perfectly -- the surfboard cable modem's lights are properly lit, as are the D-Link router's lights. The Apple base station's status light is a solid green like it's supposed to be, and strangest of all -- when I open Internet Connect to check my AirPort status, everything is fine there as well. It says "Connected to Apple Network 2b1d46," which is the new base station network that I should be connected to, and under that it says "Connected to the internet via Ethernet," yet when I try to open Safari, it says "You are not connected to the internet," which is in direct contradiction to what Internet Connect is simultaneously telling me (that I am connected to the internet).
I've tried alot of things to trouble-shoot this. I've tried FireFox and Opera, and they can't bring up any web pages either, so I know the problem isn't just with Safari -- it's that my computer just can't connect to the internet or bring up web pages, even though Internet Connect and everything else says that it's connected. I've also run the Network Diagnostics an uncountable amount of times, and all it can tell me, in all its wisdom, is that my internet connection appears to be working fine and that I must have spelled "www.apple.com" (my home page) incorrectly (it says the same thing about any other web page I try to open). I've ran the network assistant to create a new location, and it also gets the the end of the wizard and tells me that it can't connect to the internet. Finally, I've also ran the AirPort Utility multiple times and set up the base station in every possible way, but still nothing works.
On that note, I do have one question. When you run the AirPort Utility and choose "Assist Me", at one point during the wizard it asks, "How do you connect to the internet?" Right now, remember, I have the D-Link wireless router taken out of the picture (the base station is plugged directly into the surfboard cable modem). For the answer to this part of the wizard, I chose the option that says, "I use a DSL or cable modem with a static IP address or DHCP." Obviously, given that I'm on the internet as we speak, this is working fine. However, if I bring the D-Link wireless router back into the picture and plug the base station into it (the router), and then plug the router into the surfboard modem, should I still have the same option checked (the one thats says I use a DSL or cable modem with a static IP address or DHCP), or by connecting through the router, should I change my answer to one of the other two options. The second option says, "I use a DSL or cable modem using PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)." The third option says, "I connect to my local area network (LAN)." I've tried all three numerous times, and none of them work -- I still have the same problem getting on the internet once I connect through the D-Link router, but I thought I could at least find out which one is the right option so I could stop having to keep trying all three of them. Can anyone tell me which of those three options I should pick when connecting through the D-Link wireless router (cable modem with static IP address or DHCP, cable modem with PPPoE, or local area network).
Sorry, I know that was a long one, but if anyone can answer the previous question for me and/or give me some general advice regarding my problem with getting the internet to work once I hook up the base station through the router instead of directly into the cable modem, I would appreciate it more than you can imagine.
Thank you very much for your time and help.
    -- Andrew

I am doing something similar. I have the WAN port on my Linksys 4-port wired router connected to my DSL modem. My G5 and G4 computers are connected directly to the Linksys LAN ports. My older Airport Extreme (flying saucer) is connected to another LAN port on the Linksys. I had to setup the Airrport as a bridge in this configuration. I did this by using the Ethernet LAN port on the Airport instead of the WAN port. In the Airport Setup Utility I said to connect using Ethernet. This seems to work for me.
I also use manual IP addresses for everything but you will probably want to use DHCP.

  • TS1453 Apple TV doesn't show up in my iTunes.  I've done all the troubleshooting steps, updated all software, restarted Apple TV, wireless router and computer. Devices doesn't show up at all in my sidebar.Apple TV doesn't show up in preferences

Help.  My Apple TV won't sync with my computer.  I've done all the troubleshooting tips, but Apple TV doesn't show up in my Preferences under devices.
    2. Reconnect Apple TV to iTunes.
Choose iTunes > Preferences (Mac) or Edit > Preferences (Windows), click Apple TV, and make sure "Look for Apple TVs" is selected.
I see no option to select "look for Apple TV's" in Preferences, and there is no device list at all in my sidebar.
    3. If Firewall is on in Mac OS X (in the Sharing pane of System Preferences), make sure iTunes Music Sharing is selected.
There is no option to select iTunes Music Sharing in my System Preferences - see screenshot
I've updated all software, restarted Apple TV, my wireless router, and my computer.  Both my computer and the Apple TV are connected to the same wireless network and both are operating properly.  They just wont connect to each other.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

FIRSTLY: bookmark following for further reference (it describes basic setup, both to link for syncing and to stream - from any computer.)
Apple TV (1st generation): Differences between syncing and streaming" )
Now as to your problem: If you check under "Computers" in the "Settings" menu you will most likely see the name of your iTunes library Greyed out. IF that's the case, you'll basically need to re-setup your ATV., you can do so as follows (instructions are intentionally over described, but basically your disconnecting then reconnecting your ATV1. Downside (which seems to come with all methods is that you'll have to resync all your media)
**A (not ideal but effective solution)
If ATV 1 had been working but suddenly 'disappeared" from iTunes sidebar
The following solution will almost surely work  to regain your ability to Sync:
    QUIT iTunes
    Select "Computers" from "Settings" Menu.
Select your "greyed out" iTunes library.
This will bring up a window named "Disconnect from iTunes"
You're now given the choice to Cancel, or disconnect. WITH THE WARNING that if you disconnect any  content synced with iTunes, will be erased. (in fact it will be removed from your ATV but not your computer)
Assuming ALL of your media IS on your computer, Go ahead and disconnect.
Follow instructions in the Apple doc above about setting up your ATV as a paired computer.
After you ATV gen1 reappears in the sidebar. Reset all your desired syncing preferences,
    Begin syncing.
All will be fine again, (at least till the next time this occurs.) I've had to do this twice this year.
    ALTERNATELY:
SHARING (a QUICKER, less destructive TEMPORARY solution (if you just want to play your media now)
You CAN set your computer to Share by following instructions in the same doc under the heading:
"How to connect to a shared computer"
HOWEVER, this will not allow you to sync info.
I've read alternate solutions on this board, one involved changing the name of your iTunes Library etc... you may wish to try this first (if it applies) https://discussions.apple.com/message/17943841?ac_cid=142432#17943841
What I'd like to know: What causes this problem...  I'm suspecting iTunes updates, or any iTunes database issues or crashes. Or maybe too many visitors connecting to your other Apple devices (ATV 2 for example) or heck the weather in Guatemala...

  • Win 7 Pro 64 occasionally fails to connect using IKEV2 to Win2008R2 Routing and Remote Access server

I'm a networking guy and having this troubling VPM issue that I can't find.
I have a number of VPN connections from my Win7Pro 64 PC to various customers.  Their end points are all Windows Routing and Remote Access on Windows 2008R2 STD servers.
Every once and a while I will hang at Verifying User ID and Password and eventually get  ERROR 809. Change the security type on my VPN connection from IKEV2 to PPTP - never an issue, connects in right away.
I can also try from another PC (at the same or alternate location) to get into that same server using the same credentials and access - no issue using either IKEV2 or PPTP.
This has happened at various times to various customers. Here is what I know it is not:
    - Not the local or remote routers or Firewalls since I can always get in from other PC's going through the same network. Even so, tried rebooting all several times
    - Not an ISP issue at either end since I can always get into other IKEV2 servers from the same PC and from other PC's to the server I can't from my PC.
This leads to the only logical conclusion.  It is something to do with my Win7Pro 64 PC but for the life of my I can not find it.
I have obviously tried rebooting the Win7Pro PC. I have also tried recreating the VPN connection several times. Nothing.
    Help!

    Hi,
I know that you've mentioned that it is not a issue about firewall or router settings, but this error usually comes when some firewall between client and server is blocking the ports used by VPN tunnel.
so to allow IKEv2 traffic, please make sure to configure the network firewall to open UDP ports 500 and 4500, and to allow IP protocol 50.
If that is not possible, deploy SSTP based VPN tunnel on both VPN server and VPN client – that allows VPN connection across firewalls, web proxies and NAT

It means you entered the wrong password or username, try some other passwords you might have used if the default admin doesn't work.

  • AE setup for wireless router and streaming music

I'm attempting to setup my AE base station as a wireless router and use it to stream itunes through a home stereo. I'm using a new Dell Inspriron w/internal wireless card. It is detecting other wireless networks but not seeing the AE base station (which is flashing yellow even after resetting). Any input as to what I am missing?

    Hi.
I am accessing internet thru a wireless router, and it works great. Plugin AE (setup to run on the same network) and the internet gets so slow it ceases to function though I still have a valid IP. When AE is plugged in though, iTunes recognizes the speakers connected, but when I try to select them, it says 'connecting' and the program stops responding. Oh yeah, it's iTunes 5.
I've used my AE in hotels and shops where I've plugged it into an ethernet cable and the internet has worked automatically. I take it home and it stops. Try to play some music over it and it doesn't work either. What gives.
Anybody have any ideas? I'd love some help.
    thanks.

The best source to ask is HughesNet. According to their web site the HNS7000S is a router. Instructions how to set up a home network can be found here.
I cannot find instructions how to set up DDNS on the HN70000S router. The suggested setup in the KB article link above won't help you with that either. I don't know whether it is possible with HughesNet to put the router into bridge mode and set up the WRT for internet. It may not be possible at all. But you have to check with HughesNet.
