RoboHelp HTML Version 10. - OK to use an HTML cleanup tool on RoboHelp topics?

We are considering using a Webtool like www.cleanuphtml.com to clean up the inline html styles in a large number of RoboHelp topics that were imported from Word several years ago. After the cleanup, we can still use the styles from our CSS. Does anyone see any potential problems here? Here's what the Cleanup tool adds to the Head section. It then uses these "internal" styles whereever it needs to clean up the HTML. Thanks - Charlie Kyle

I have not seen any reference to this tool on any of the authoring sites I follow, That does not mean it will not work without problems, simply that there is nothing to go on.
Where I might expect problems in the future is when you amend the CSS or want to apply a new one. The embedded CSS that you have printed will always be in your content. What works today, might work tomorrow and then again...
I understand not wanting to clean up using a good Find and Replace tool but it is the way I would go, with plenty of backing up.

• Topic headings not showing in Firefox, with RoboHelp HTML version 8 WebHelp

1. I have just upgraded a customer's Help project to RH8, with a WebHelp layout.
The finished WebHelp Guide works fine in Internet Explorer 8.
But Firefox 3.0.1.5 (latest update) does not show topic headings (style Heading 1) where they are automatically linked to the Topic Properties > Topic Title.; i.e. the topic heading is a Field {Title}, using rh-variable_start name="title" etc. Firefox only shows the topic heading if the heading exists as text in the WYSIWYG field.
I checked a backup copy of the compiled WebHelp that I had generated using RoboHelp HTML version 7, and this works OK - all topic headings that are fields display OK in Firefox.
2. Also, some images (.gif format) do not display in Firefox that is generated by RH8.
Any ideas, anyone?
Philip

Hi,
Note: All I post here are my findings. I didn't test all DHTML effects and I'm not a javascript guru, so I may be wrong.
As far as I can find, this behaviour is defenitly a bug, although it's not related to headings, CBT's or images. This is what I found:
Whenever you have multiple DHTML-effects that kick in on load, Firefox only displays the one that is defined first in the topic. In the bottom of the topic, you'll find a script like this:

In this case, the image with id img1 is loaded first and displayed correct. All subsequent effects (heading with id h11) is not displayed. Putting the heading in front of the image will show the image, while the image is not displayed.
I suspect that the effects are not correctly parsed into
if ((gbBsNS6)&&(srcObj.addEventListener))
srcObj.addEventListener( noOn.toLowerCase(), new Function("event", newHandler ),false);
on line 2994 and 2995. Changing or deleting line 2995 effectively removes kills on load effects (ie not showing anything with an on load effect) as expected.
If you also use DHTML effects and find the same behaviour as Philip, please post a bug report.

• RoboHelp HTML Version 10 - Navigation panel not displaying in published project

We are generating a WebHelp project in RoboHelp HTML Version 10 and the navigation panel (TOC, Search, etc.) is no longer visible in the index file (viewed locally) and it's only visible by clicking "Show" when viewed in a web server. This issue is occurring with Internet Explorer 11 and Google Chrome Version 39.0.2171.99 m. I also tried to view the index files of previously generated projects and am experiencing the same issue (this did not occur before). Is this a known issue? It appears that there a few other discussions posted recently experiencing similar issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Nikki

Hi there
Sorry, but I'm a bit confused. What you are describing sounds like perfectly normal behavior.
Can you share a link where this is happening? Not so we can click it, but so we can see what the link looks like.
If you want a topic to open with the surrounding navigation (TOC, Index, Search, Glossary) you need to click the Show link, then look at what's in the Address bar. Copy that link and you should have what you need.

• Are we allowed to use the Web developer function in Firefox version 5.0 to edit the html source code associated with the Firefox home page?

Are we allowed to use the Web developer function, under the "Firefox" tab in Firefox version 5.0, to edit the html source code associated with the Firefox version 5.0 home page ( so that we can personalize the home page )? Is this legal?

Solution: (Free Download Manager)
Go here: http://codecpack.co/download/Free_Download_Manager.html and download Free Download Manager 3.8.1067 Beta 3, it works perfectly with Firefox 5.0.1
Solution: (to Google mail aka Gmail)
I have had this problem for a while since I did a previous Firefox update, where I had to force Gmail to load in Basic HTML else it's next to impossible to use it. The solution is this: simply update your Java, and Gmail will work without a problem using Standard HTML. To update your Java go here: http://www.java.com/en/ and select "Free Java Download".
And beta normally, universally, means "the not quite there yet version of the version we're aiming for" NORMALLY used during production and testing of a type of software.

• RoboHelp HTML Version 11: Where can I find the version of RoboEngine that ships with RH 11?

I'm asking this question because the Using RoboHelp HTML 11 guide says that the new context-sensitive Help API is supported only with RoboHelp Server or RoboEngine 3.0 or later.
Since we are considering deployment of WebHelp or WebHelp Pro to a company-hosted web server (instead of to RoboHelp Server), we want to make sure that we can use the CSH API to call CSH topics.
Thanks.
Carol

Hi,
You don't need RoboEngine (old name of RH server?) You can simply put your files on any hosted platform and use the context-sensitive help api.
Which API are you referring to? You can always use context sensitive help, regardless of whether you use any additional products.
Kind regards,

• Which version of RH to use?

Hi, I am in a new job where there is currently no online
help. I am going to create RH help, and it needs to be printable to
MS Word. My only RH experience to this point is creating Robohelp
HTML projects that weren't single-sourced.
Other info:
1) Our printed docs are written using Word, not Frame.
2) Our company product is a set of web-based applications
that users access via secure internet connection. (They do
not install our app s/w on their own pcs.)
Given all this, can anyone suggest which version of RH to
use? Can I still use the one I'm familiar with (RH HTML)? Or should
I switch to WebHelp or RH for Word?
I don't know if the fact that we're trying to single source,
re-using information for both online help and printed manuals,
makes a difference in RH "flavor" selection.
Thanks very much.
Lori

Hi Lori and welcome to our community. It sounds like you are
confusing the RH version with the flavour of output. Check out Rick
Stone's
tutorial
on this very topic. In order to answer your query it is necessary
to know how your users are accessing the help. As your application
is web based, it may be safe to assume the help is also web based.
In this case Webhelp is your likely output format. Compiled HTML
(CHM) files are not designed to run on websites and Microsoft have
added security patches that create further problems. You can also
use the single sourcing capability to produce a Word document in
the same way as you can with CHM files. Hope this helps

I am in the process of expanding a database of chemistry journal articles. These materials are ideally acquired in two formats when both are available-- PDF and HTML. To oversimplify, PDFs are for the user to read, and derivatives of the HTML versions are for the computer to read. Both formats are, of course, readily recognized and indexed by Spotlight. Journal articles have two essential components with regards to a database: the topical content of the article itself, and the cited references to other scientific literature. While a PDF merely lists these references, the HTML version has, in addition, links to the cited items. Each link URL contains the digital object identifier (doi) for the item it points to. A doi is a unique string that points to one and only one object, and can be quite useful if rendered in a manner that enables indexing by Spotlight. Embedded URL's are, of course, ignored by Spotlight. As a result, HTML-formatted articles must be processed so that URL's are openly displayed as readable text before Spotlight will recognize them. Conversion to DOC format using MS Word, followed by conversion to RTF using Text Edit accomplishes this, but is quite labor intensive.
In the last few months, I have added about 3,500 articles to this collection, which means that any procedure for rendering URL's must be automated and able to process large batches of documents with minimal user oversight. This procedure needs to generate a separate file for each HTML document processed. Trials using Automator's "Get Specified Finder Items" and "Get Selected Finder Items", as well as "Ask For Finder Items" (along with "Get URLs From Web Pages") give unsatisfactory results. When provided with multiple input documents, these three commands generate output in which the URLs from multiple input items are merged into a single block, which yields a single file using "Create New Word Document" as the subsequent step. A one-to-one, input file to output file result can be obtained by processing one file at a time, but this requires manual selection of each item and one-at-a-time processing. What I need is a command that accepts multiple input documents, but processes them one at a time, generating a separate output for each file processed. Is there a way for Automator to do this?

Hi,
With the project all done, i'm preparing for the presentation. Managed to get my hands on a HD beamer for the night (Epason TW2000) and planning to do the presentation in HD.
That of course managed to bring up some problems. I posted a thread which i'll repost here . Sorry for the repost, i normally do not intend to do this, but since this thread is actually about the same thing, i'd like to ask the same question to you. The end version is in AfterEffects, but that actually doesn't alter the question. It's about export:
"I want to export my AE project of approx 30 min containing several HD files to a Blu Ray disc. The end goal is to project the video in HD quality using the Epson EMP-TW2000 projector. This projector is HD compatible.
To project the video I need to connect the beamer to a computer capable of playing a heavy HD file (1), OR burn the project to a BRD (2) and play it using a BRplayer.
I prefer option 2, so my question is: which would be the preferred export preset?
Project specs:
- 1920x1080 sq pix (16:9)
- 25 fps
- my imported video files (Prem.Pro sequences) are also 25 fps and are Progressive (!)
To export to a BRD compatible format, do i not encounter a big problem: my projectfiles are 25 fps and progressive, and I believe that the only Bluray preset dispaying 1920x1080 with 25 fps requests an INTERLACED video (I viewed the presets found on this forum, this thread)... There is also a Progr. format, BUT then you need 30 fps (29,...).
So, is there one dimension that can be changed without changing the content of the video, and if yes which one (either the interlacing or the fps).
I'm not very familiar with the whole Blu-ray thing, I hope that someone can help me out."
Please give it a look.
Thanks,
Jef

• Print feature on dashboad - HTML version does not save charts

The print option at the bottom of the dashboard allows the reports to be saved either as a PDF or HTML file. The PDF file with the report does not look as good as the reports on the dashboard. Though the HTML version looks good, when I save the file and then reopen it, all I can see is the tables. The charts do not show up.
I am saving the file with extension .mht and used various encoding such as Unicode (UTF8), US-ASCII, and Western European (Windows) etc.

• Robohelp Server 7.0 vs Robohelp Desktop version

hi there,
We have to write help files for our various products.
What are the major difference in server and desktop version.
Precisely, i am looking for anwers of :
1. can we create independent (does not look for robohelp
server to get data) executable files (.exe, .htm) so that we can
link it to our application software.
2. if we buy RoboHelp Desktop, then what are we MISSING...if
we buy robohelp server
thanks for your expert knowledge sharing in advance.

Hi Rohit.
RoboHelp 7 client (or desktop) is the tool used to produce
the help documentation output files. It allows numerous output
types to be generated, one of which is Webhelp Pro. Webhelp is
designed to be located on a server, website or intranet. Webhelp
Pro is a version of Webhelp designed specifically for the RoboHelp
7 Server product.
RoboHelp 7 Server takes Webhelp Pro output and publishes it
to a server. It's main advantages are that it allows you to produce
reports of the usage of the help to identify its usefulness. It
also allows you to include standalone files and make them
searchable to the user. This includes PDFs, HTM and MS Office files
but not .EXE files. To be honest I can't see what could usefully be
included in a .EXE file that would be useful to a user of the help.
So in summary, you need a copy of RoboHep 7 to produce your
help output (Webhelp Pro) and a copy of RoboHep 7 Server to publish
the help to the Server and get the usage/search capabilities. If
you don't want these capabilities you can do without RoboHelp 7
Server and still publish Webhelp output to a server.
BTW I'd remove your email address from your post if I was
you. If you don't you'll be offered all sorts of additional
(non-RH) advice involving parts of your anatomy, world peace and
financial well being.

• Must both authors have the same RoboHelp release version?

A department is our company that uses RoboHelp is designating an employee as the backup for the primary author. The backup will update files when the primary is not at work. The primary has RoboHelp version 9. The backup intended to use version 9 also, but it seems that version 10 is all that is available from Adobe. Our company has a licensing arrangement.
Will files created in RoboHelp version 9 be compatible with files used in RoboHelp version 10 and vice versa? Must both authors have the same version of RoboHelp? The authors will be using RoboSource Control to check files in and out.

Hi,
Yes both authors need the same RoboHelp version. Some resellers might still have copies of RH9 available though.
