Router RAM usage

Hi,
i have a Question to Router RAM usage.
My Router have 512MB of Memory.
When i do a "show version" I get this otput:
Cisco ********* processor with 491520K/32768K bytes of memory.
This means 491MB for CPU and 32MB for IO.
Now i do a "show memory" and get this output:
                Head    Total(b)     Used(b)     Free(b)   Lowest(b)  Largest(b)
Processor   6353EB60   430707644    14276428   416431216   416363448   413930428
      I/O    E000000    33554432     1884520    31669912    31669912    31669884
Now here are only 430MB Total RAM for the Processor. Why this? What is with the other 60MB Memory? How does these values are in context with the Output of a  "show region"?
Region Manager:
Start         End     Size(b)  Class  Media  Name
0x0E000000  0x0FFFFFFF    33554432  Iomem  R/W    iomem

Thank in advance
Thomas

hello Thomas,
in order to understand the difference between both output, i would highly recommend you to go through the following mentioned example:
the output of the show version indicate the physical amount of memory... however, the following mentioned memory summary indicate the >>>>>> allocated + total == process memeory...
Router>show memory summary
            Head       Total (b)   Used (b)  Free (b)   Lowest (b)  Largest (b)
Processor   60AB4ED0   5550384     2082996   3467388    3464996     3454608
I/O         40000000   16777216    1937280   14839936   14839936    14838908
Total = the total amount of memory available after the system image loads and builds its data structures.
Used = the amount of memory currently allocated.
Free = the amount of memory currently free.
Lowest = the lowest amount of free memory recorded by the router since it was last booted.
Largest = the largest free memory block currently available.
Here is what you can learn from the show processes memory command output:
Router>show processes memory
Total: 3149760, Used: 2334300, Free: 815460
PID   TTY   Allocated    Freed      Holding    Getbufs    Retbufs   Process
0     0     226548       1252       1804376    0          0         *Initialization*
0     0     320          5422288    320        0          0         *Scheduler*
0     0     5663692      2173356    0          1856100    0         *Dead*
1     0     264          264        3784       0          0         Load Meter
2     2     5700         5372       13124      0          0         Virtual Exec
3     0     0            0          6784       0          0         Check heaps
4     0     96           0          6880       0          0         Pool Manager
5     0     264          264        6784       0          0         Timers
Allocated = the total amount of bytes that have been allocated by the process since the router booted...
Total = the total amount of memory available after the system image loads and builds its data structures.
so if you add the above allocated memory to the Total amount of memory, this should be equal to the process Pool >>> physical Dram...

  • Scratch disks and RAM usage

i would like to understand the relationship between scratch disks and RAM usage in Photoshop.
While i was working on a fairly big psb file (2gb), photoshop kept prompting that I was out of memory, but in fact the utilization was only 75% (i had 16gbs total, photoshop was only using 7gb, and i allowed PS to use up to 14gb in total). when it says out of memory, it was actually my scratch disk at fault ( i only set 1 scratch disk, which was my 120gb SSD running out of space).
any idea how I can optimize PS to use up all my RAM first before even touching my scratch disk? (short of using a RAMdisk, please).
    thanks!

I am curious about this also. I just reinstalled W-7--have 11 G of physical memory--a ton of hard drive empty space also, and I have been wondering why PS_CC is so slow--since basically I have only put my Security and Browser in addition to Adobe back on the Dell XPS computer..... At least now it does show the downloading percentage (like .psd file) , but that must be what is happening.  I do think that some of these "frozen" screens I have been experiencing, was because the program was using scratch disk, instead of the Ram... I came up from CS-5, and can't describe it in detail, but just realize how slow PS-CC is in most everything.  Going back and see if reallocating will help...

  • Where to see CPU and RAM usage in IPAD 1

    Hi:-)
While i have Apps running , I would like to be able to see CPU and RAM in use..and ideas how/where?
    Thanks

There are several apps in the app store that can show you cpu and ram usage of your device, e.g. "system info"

  • High RAM usage when system is 'idle' (EtreCheck)

    Hey guys,
First timer here. Ok here's my question :
I recently bought a secondhand Macbook pro 15 inch. For me it's a huge upgrade coming from a 2009 13 inch Macbook pro. Because a friend of mine wants to buy my old one I was doing some diagnostics on the 13 inch, which has 4 GB of RAM, and found out it had a lot of inactive RAM usage and wired usage, almost 2 GB, due to a lot of launchdaemons etc which were hogging the RAM. I used terminal to kill these agents and deamons and now that system is running smooth again. Maybe it's wise to mention that the 13 inch runs on ML.
3 days ago I did a clean Yosemite install on the 15 inch, swapped the HDD for a SSD. And already the activity monitor shows a whopping 4,28 GB of RAM usage while I'm typing this with just safari open. I thought I could do the same trick as I did with my 13 inch but it didn't help, had some java deamons and helpers and deleted those. In terminal I looked up everything via launchctl list and there's nothing unusual going on as far as I can see. I had VirtualBox for one day but uninstalled it using their uninstaller. I have no clue what's eating all this RAM.  Please help me out so I can be a proud owner of my second macbook for atleast 5 years to come. Thanks in advance.

The page outs indicate the OS has not recently swapped any memory to disk.
Apple made changes to 10.9 that are the same on 10.10. Memory will be used as much as possible. It is the fastest storage on the system, keeping it free is a waste of your time - data loads fastest from RAM.
    This is a good explanation…
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/17/#compressed-memory
The system also frees 'cache' memory when another process has more need to use it. Eventually it will swap to disk (which is slow) so the OS also compresses memory before swapping is needed.
Please avoid killing launchd jobs, many will simply restart or relaunch again later. Eventually you may kill one that hangs the OS & corrupts the disk via a forced shutdown.
I do suspect you may see issues when RAM does get low, but there is no evidence of that here. The memory pressure graph will show red when swapping - every other colour is fine. Wait until you see red & then note the top memory users.
If you don't want java installed you need to find removal instructions & get it all off the system, simply stopping the update checks will leave Java in an old state - terrible for security.
Also do you know what 'Live' is? It crashed recently, if it keeps doing that it may be worth a look, however it may just be one if the things that was effects by the killing spree

  • Why does closing all open windows (15) and leaving only one drop ram usage from 1.5 to 1.4Gb and not more.

Why does closing all open windows (15) and leaving only one drop ram usage by only 100mb from 1.5 to 1.4Gb.
What is in this 1.4 gb ?
I don't care much about ram, It's just that cpu usage spike like crazy by the end.

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.
    *[[Export bookmarks to Internet Explorer]]
You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.
    * [[Install an older version of Firefox]]

Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

  • High kernel_task RAM Usage in Yosemite 10.10.1

    Hello All,
No matter what I'm running, I always have high RAM usage with kernel_task. I've looked around the other threads and never found a definitive solution. I wouldn't call it crippling to my system but I would like to resolve the issue. Below is a screenshot of my activity monitor, and my Etrecheck run. Please let me know anything I can do to reduce the RAM usage of this process.

  • Runaway RAM Usage leading to Kernel Panic using FilmConvert Plugin (updated x3)

Hello, filed a bug report on this but cuious if anyone sees it.
    Late 2012 27 iMac, top line i7 with 680MX, 32 GB RAM.
    Promise R6 TB RAID.
Trying to render out a 15 min edit from Premiere that has each clip with 3 filters on it - MB Looks, MB Colorista, Filmconvert.
Since 7.01, every time I render previews or encode out, RAM use skyrockets way past the 25GB I allocated. I get up to a 50GB swap file in fact before the computer just craps out and I can't finish my render. (Nothing past 15 min anyway, I can do under that length ok.) As of this moment PPro Headless in Activity Monior has allocated 40GB and climbing....
Any ideas?  Kind of a major issue. Does not happen on CS6 with same filters and similar project.
PS - The same issue is happening with the same project on my Macbook Pro 15" retina with 16GB of RAM. It's creating a huge swap file. On the iMac with Fusion drive I can't complete the render at all due to the system SSD filling up on the Fusion drive. It eventually crashes and reboots. I can complete the render on the laptop, but it ends up with a 50+ GB swap file.
    UPDATE 1:
I had my suspicions a Plugin I am using, the excellent (but now unusable for over 10 min projects) plugin "FilmConvert" was causing the issue on all my Macs.
To prove it's the plugin, I removed duplicated my main 15 min sequence, removed the FilmConvert plugin from all clips while keeping the two Magic Bullet effects on. So, all filters (MB Looks, MB Colorista II) BUT filmConvert.
    Result?
RAM usage stays where it should be (at the limit set in Premiere Pro CC) and there is zero swap file usage. Same project, same filters, same everything except FilmConvert was removed on this duplicate timeline.
As it stands, the plugin is unusable for longer projects.  I'm still curious if anyone else has seen this, or if Adobe has any input.
UPDATE 2: I developed a workaround workflow and the vendor wrote back and thinks it's a bug in PPro CC, but will try to see if they can't code around it:
"We have had one other very recent report of this type of behaviour, but when rendering through the CC version
of Adobe Media Encoder or Premiere (but not After Effects). I believe the issue is with Media Encoder / Premiere,
although it's probably preventable within our plugin. The problem I believe is that Premiere and Media Encoder
create many instances of the plugin during a  render, one instance per frame, and it seems in CC those instances
do not get cleaned up until after the render finishes.
As each plugin instance is expecting to be called many times, to render multiple frames, it keeps a certain amount
of memory allocated, in order to gain a speed advantage."
I am using the render previews workflow to deal with it for now. I set my sequence to my master codec (in this case ProRes 422 HQ, with maximum quality checked). Then I preview chunks of the timeline setting in/out, render. Then I quit the program, which frees up the RAM and the need for the swap file, which starts reducing itself. Then I run PPro again, and preview another chunk, and repeat the process until done.
To export final piece, I just export using previews matching the sequence (which is ProRes 422 HQ) and it is a straight copy at that point and quick. This is a useful workflow if you are making tons of minor edits for a client anyway, as it vastly speeds up re-renders of the final file.  No loss in quality as the previews are the same as my final encode would be anyway.
Still, it would be nice if Adobe/FilmConvert or both could fix this bug so I can just queue up a whole sequence and walk away without chunking it up if I need to.
Update 3: If only Adobe could move so fast. Rubber Monkey sent me a new version to test today, and it fixed the problem. Amazing customer service!! It has not been released yet but I suspect it will be at some point. Case closed.

Glad I'm not the only one. My temporary solution was to download the kernel and wl package from December 2012 found http://repo-ck.com/PKG_source/ and then mkpkg and install it. It'll work as an alternative for now, without messing up the primary kernel setup.

  • RAM usage increases with time, problem?

    Hi all,
Whislt I've been playing with linux on the side for a few years the past few weeks have been my first foray into using linux as my main OS, in the form of Arch. It's been a steep learning curve but I'm enjoying the experience and wealth of information. Previous flirts with Linux have been groping in the dark, pasting code from the internet and avoiding the terminal where possible.
Since going Arch full time I've noticed the RAM usage seems to increase when I leave it alone for a few hours. I'm running an old, around 2005 I think, Advent Laptop with 512MB, or 466MB according to free -m, RAM. I've allocated 2GB to swap which it dips into occasionally.
Typically I've been leaving open luakit & urxvt whislt running Awesome. If I leave it for a few hours and return the RAM has jumped from 30% or so to 80 or 90%. A reboot solves this.
I had a look around the interwebs but this is the first time my wed-fu has not unearthed one of those wonderful arch articles/post on what to do.
Any suggestions, or anything I can do to clarify the issue?

It does indeed, but only while the system is being actively accessed, as far as I know. An idle system (i.e. with no filesystem access) will have a stagnant file cache.
So I guess the question here would be, is your PC idle while you're "leaving" it? Do you use it as a fileserver, webserver, database, etc, or do you ssh in perform various tasks? Does 'free' report your free '-/+ buffers/cache' value as something minute?

  • OSX Lion ram usage

Well, i've got my 13' Macbook Air today (4gb ram), and love it.
The only thing that bothers me is the extremely high ram usage of Lion, when i turn the Macbook on it jumps to about 1.3gb ram usage which i find really much considering my PC running Windows 7 uses less.
After some casual usage it even jumps up to about 2 gb ram usage.
Is this normal? how are the other Air's with only 2gb of ram handling this? there can't be much left there, besides just running the operating system.
i am new to Mac's so am i doing something wrong?

    Hi all,
After last Lion update a i seem to encounter a very strange situation regarding ram usage.
I have an early 13' mbp core i5 with 8gb of ram.
After upgrading to lion 10.7.1 i have less than 500mb available after just a few hours since i turn it on.
I must mention that the only running apps are: safari, mail, app store, ichat, ms excell and itunes.
Upon quitting excell, itunes, appstore and restarting mail and safari i still only get 1,5gb of free ram.
My suspicion is that there is another ram leak somewhere, or else i can't explain why my computer user 128mb of swap with 8gb of ram installed.

  • Kernel Task RAM Usage

I'm just wondering what's up with the RAM usage on my macbook. Right when I start up 500MB of RAM is being used (wired and active), 100MB of it being the kernel task. After a typical session of use, I close all programs and find that the RAM usage is about 800MB and the kernel task is using 250MB. Just wondering why the kernel task's RAM usage creeps up like that and doesn't go back down. It's just a little perplexing to have the same exact programs running and be down 300MB of free RAM.

I was having the same problem and looked into it, this may help:

  • Questions about mpd and sonata ram usage

    Hi again!
I'm very impressed with mpd and i really love the sonata client with it's cover art , lyrics fetching features .
I've noticed that mpd uses about 13 mb ram and sonata 16 mb of ram. I have about 6 albums in my library .
I was just wondering if it is normal for mpd and sonata to use that ram .
I have enough ram about 1gb so it's not an issue , i'm just curious if this is normal
Also i've noticed that with mpd and sonata the cpu usage is much lower than with audacious when playing files , but the ram usage with mpd is higher
    Thanks again

Hmmm...I have Arch64 with a 15,000 collection, MPD uses 9.8MB and Sonata uses 52.5.MB, whether there are songs in the playlist or not.

  • MacBook Pro very high overall RAM usage

Hi, I'm using a late 2012 13" MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a dual core i7 and I've been experiencing very high RAM usage for the last couple of weeks even though I'm not really doing anything. Here's a activity monitor screenshot
As you can see I'm only really using Chrome and Sublime Text (3). Twitter and Outlook are also open but don't take up that much (Twitter maybe but that just seems to be badly optimised and it's all gone when I close it).
    So, is this normal?
    Thanks in a

This is normal. The two most important things in that screenshot are 'Swap Used' (0 means you never ran out of RAM) and the Memory Pressure graph (everything green = good). For the rest the OS knows to handle RAM,

  • [XFCE4] ram usage problem

when i using xubuntu with xfce ram usage was ~120-160 with only pidgin and xchat
but on arch with xfce ram using just on start up ~160 and it with out any apps..
    what the problem?

    2b9anders
    im using htop
im install xubuntu to comare them.xubuntu show me ~220mb ram WTF???
and I compare htop logs of them
    in xubuntu:
panel plugins(like language layouts, cpu load...) using about 10mb each.
    X using about ~80-100mb
    in arch:
    p.p. using about 20mb each
X using about 40-60mb of ram.
when i will be at home i'll paste screens of htop on xubuntu and arch

  • Shocking - OBIEE 11.1.1.5 Ram Usage

    Hi Experts,
I have installed OBIEE 11.1.1.5 on Windows server 2008 R2 having 4GB RAM and i3 3.0 GHZ Intel Processor on 64 bit machine , and it uses physical memory upto 96% most of the time when my all services are up..
please suggest is ther some problem or shall i increase my RAM or is ther any way to reduced the RAM usage..
    Cheers
    Ankit

    Ankit,
This is normal behaviour by 11g on your configuration. 4Gb is the minimum requirement. To make it more efficient, get your RAM sized increased and you will see the difference.
    Hope this is useful..

  • Limiting OS RAM usage

I am looking for some tips or best practices to get the most efficient use out of my RAM, particularly when it comes to the OS. I have a Latitude E6530 with 16GB of RAM. I started out with 4, then went to 8GB, then to 16. I run the same number of programs
in my daily routine, yet it seems that the more RAM I install, the more the OS gobbles it up. Since I run the same programs daily, I would not expect RAM usage to fluctuate very much and expect these apps to consume about the same daily. It seems like the
only thing that can be consuming more RAM is the OS. When I was at 4gb, I hovered around 70-80% RAM utilization, went to 8GB, same results, now at 16GB, and almost hitting that number again. I understand the OS needs a certain amount of RAM to operate, so
is there a way for me to limit what the OS takes so I can have more for programs that may need it? Will the OS "give some back" if needed to extra programs I may decide to run when I am at a high utilization mark? What I don't want to get into
though is a constant swap condition, especially with core OS components that need to stay in RAM. Whats the best way to go about this?

it will be better if you start from "general" about RAM management
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/optimize-windows-better-performance#optimize-windows-better-performance=windows-7
actually its not only based on how much RAM that you are using, but how you prevent another program or HW attached (even external graphic card or LAN card) used windows service that maybe will increase RAM usage.
You can start using Windows performance tools to investigate
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749249.aspx
try to compare different condition like, a few program running during start up (clecan boot), disable security software, no other 3rd party HW attached, no internet connection, upgrade latest driver for all HW or else
my opinion, Windows will only using RAM that needed to run start up, increasing RAM usage for windows process depend on the software running and HW attached
for more details and complicated process :) , you can read and implement this with your development environment
