Routing all connections through a one node in a 2 node RAC cluster

Hi everyone
My client has the following requirement: an active/active RAC cluster (eg node1/node2), but with only one of the nodes being used (node1) and the other sitting there just in case.
For things like services, i'm sure this is straightforward enough - just have them set to preferred on node1 and available on node 2.
For connections, I imagine I would just have the vips in order in the tns file, but with LOAD_BALANCING=OFF, so they go through the tns entries in order (i.e node 1, then node 2), so this would still allow the vip to failover if node 1 is down.
Does that sound about right? Have I missed anything?
Many thanks
Rup

What is the reason for a "+just in case+" node - and when and how is is "enabled" when that just-in-case situation occurs?
This does not many any kind of sense from a high availability or redundancy view.

Does that sound about right? Have I missed anything?Won't work on 10g - may not work on 11g. The Listener can and does handoff connections, depending on what the TNS connection string say. If you do not connect via a SID entry but via a SERVICE entry, and that service is available on multiple nodes, you may not (and often will not) be connected to instance on the single IP that you used in your TNS connection.
Basic example:
// note that this TEST-RAC alias refers to a single specific IP of a cluster, and use
// SERVICE_NAME as the request
/home/billy> tnsping test-rac

Used parameter files:
/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin/sqlnet.ora
Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST= 196.1.83.116)(PORT=1521)) (LOAD_BALANCE=no) (CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=shared)(SERVICE_NAME=myservicename)))
OK (50 msec)
// now connecting to the cluster using this TEST-RAC TNS alias - and despite we listing a single
// IP in our TNS connection, we are handed off to a different RAC node (as the service is available
// on all nodes)
// and this also happens despite our TNS connection explicitly requesting no load balancing

SQL> So we connected to RAC node 196.1.83.116 - and that listener handed us off to RAC node 196.1.83.127. The 11gr2 Listener seems to behave differently - it does not do a handoff (from a quick test I did on a 11.2.0.1 RAC) in the above scenario.
This issue aside - how do you deal with just-in-case situation? How do you get clients to connect to node 2 when node 1 is down? Do you rely on the virtual IP of node 1 to be switched to node 2? Is this a 100% safe and guaranteed method?
It can take some time (minutes, perhaps more) for a virtual IP address to fail over to another node. During that time, any client connection using that virtual IP will fail. Is this acceptable?
I dunno - I dislike this concept of your client of treating the one RAC node as some kind of standby database for a just-in-case situation. I fail to see any logic in that approach.

HELP I have a wireless Linksys router WRT54G connected through my cable company broadband modem on a Mac. I have another computer to which I installed wireless capability because it didn't come with it. This required attching some piece of equipment to the back of the PC which enabled it to get on the internet without another cable modem. My question is this. If I get an iphone or a laptop(with built in wireless ability) will I automatically be able to go on the web because of the router on the Mac.

yes certainly... if you get any wireless device in network that would certainly connects to a wireless n/w of router...

There are two iMacs connected through same router in my house but one refuses to login to facebook and other logged in sites. Local techies are bemused, I have just reinstalled OSX and still have the problem. Login page recycles, I get no further and no errors reported. Safari, Opera and Firefox. Deleted cookies and chain but still no action.

If you have not already done so, read the router's user manual troubleshooting section and/or contact its customer service department/forums.
If still having problems, post back w/details of all you have tried to resolve the problems along w/the troubleshooting solutions that the "local techies" had you try.

I started to do that then it said that this will become their apple I.D or similar and then I thought that will disconnect them from the same iTunes?  I want them still on my iTunes as they are only young (8 and 10)?  Or have I got this all wrong and even if I do set them up with a different e-mail will they still be on my itunes?  For example if they want to purchase an App will it still go through my account even if they use their ipod?

What do you mean it did not work!  What were the results of the diagnostic tests?
Have you contacted your ISP to determine if the problem is on their end?
Have you changed your router channel?  Sometimes this resolves wireless problems.

  • Updating firmware when I can't get an internet connection through the router

I am trying to update the firmware for WRT54G V8, but some of the instructions indicate I need to have the router connected and be connected to the internet.  I cannot get an internet connection through the router.  Can I upgrade firmware without being connected to the internet through the router.  (I have had this router for about a year and a half with no problems until now.)

Yes, you can upgrade the firmware without an Internet connection.
To upgrade the firmware, first download the new firmware into a computer that you can wire to your router.
Next, power down your entire network.
Then wire the computer to a LAN port on the router.
Disconnect all other wires from the router.
Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    Power up your computer.
Login to the router, and do the firmware upgrade  (it will likely take several minutes).
    Power down your entire network.
Next you need to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead. Report back with this problem
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. Report back with this problem.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Logging inbound and outbound connections through my Linksys router

    Hi There,
I have a  Linksys wireless router (WRT54G series) that I use to connect to the internet with my cable modem. I would like to be able to configure my home network to log inbound and outbound connections through my router.
My router, which I bought brand new a couple of years ago, provides some very basic logging through its administration interface.  I can view a current log of very recent (within the past couple of minutes) inbound and outbound connections/traffic.  However, I would like to be able to configure my network to log all inbound and outbound traffic for at least 1 or 2 days and have this log saved somewhere so I can retrieve and review it at a more convenient time.  I haven't been able to figure out how to do this with my current Linksys router and would like some help in configuring my system.
Is it possible for me to configure (perhaps with a firmware upgrade or even by replacing my older Linksys router with a newer one) my router to continuously log a day or more's worth of inbound and outbound connections?  If this is possible, what changes do I need to implement?  Does Linksys offer a wireless router that has more sophisticated logging capabilities?  What is the longest log period that I can create with a Linksys router?
If it's not possible to create such a log with my router, then what other components would I need to log this information?  I've thought about setting up a Linux server with two network cards installed to act as a gateway between my router and cable modem which will log traffic.  Would this be a good strategy to implement logging?
    Thanks in advance.
    Tom

well...the router's in-built log will only provide basic information about the incoming/outgoing log . So, it will be a good idea to install a separate log viewer .....

  • In my small office ethernet network all of a sudden one of my imacs cannot be connected to. It can connect to all other computers and can access internet, but as soon as someone tries to connect to that mac, it disconnects from the network. Any ideas

I have a network of 9 macs that connect via ethernet and a router. All of a sudden one of the macs cannot be connected to. It can connect to all others and the internet, but no one can connect to that one. I have appletalk active and file sharing on, but everytime someone tries to connect to it, it is not on the network. Additionally, the personal file sharing keeps turning off even though I have it locked. Any ideas?

    Hi orangekay
not sure where you got the idea that I have
bizarre encrypted filesystem plugins and scripts you have manipulating them all the time
because I do not have any such running, just normal Applescripts that do tasks that could be done by hand.

Did you figure this out?  I haven't rented a movie in this new iTunes yet and saw one tonight I wanted to rent.  Same fricken thing is happening to me.  I hate this new iTunes, and I really hate that there are problems like this....why the heck do they have to fix something that isn't broken and break it?  This just really stinks.

After upgrading my iPad Air with IOS 7.06, I could no longer connect to the internet.
I have 2 MacBooks Air, 1 ipad mini and one iPhone 4S running on the same network, and they are all connected to the net and function well.
So I cleaned up the ipad completely, installed the latest firmware and reinstalled my apps : no connection.
I tried all things of resets and forgets. No result.
I have been fondling with my Airport Extreme 5 , but that did not help much.
This morning I went to a neighbor , hooked my ipad air on his network, typed the password and the thing all worked fine.
I have tried to connect the ipad air as an ethernet client, but that did not work. „Not enough power“ was the statement
    Ideas anyone ?

Yes I tried this manyfold. But did not work.  Reading on, I took Tesserac's advice. Shut down router and computer.
Start router after 15 minutes and wait another 10 minutes before starting the computer.
Et voila.... everything is back in working order,

  • Slow Connection Speed on one node in a 2 node RAC set up

    hi all
Having a bit of trouble with one of the nodes in a 2 node RAC set up
We have traffic being sent directly to the node in question (using a serivce that only runs on Node 1)
Forced connection to this node (sqlplus) from a remote application server takes 3 times longer than it does if we force conneciton to the second RAC node.
If I try and connect locally - the conneciton speed is instant -
There are NO performance issues with the server
There are NO perfromance issues with the instance / database - this is only noticed when making the initial connection
I have been around the network for the node and can see nothing wrong - so was wondering if there was anything you guys might have experienced whereas conneciton time is slow for one node only (949 ms - compared to 247 ms on node 2)

If anyone out there is interested or comes accross this issue
The problem turned out to be mount point options pm the Linux Volumes
I had them configured as part of best practice for RAC / NetApp / Direct NFS - hjowever I also had individual binaries for both nodes so as to have greater availability.
Thereffore I should have had the mount options for SINGLE NODE.
    Change was to
    - shutdown the instance
    - unmoiunt the binaries
    - change the following on fstab
    <mount>          <volume>             nfs   rw,bg,hard,nointr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,tcp,vers=3,timeo=600,actimeo=0        0 0
    to
    <mount>          <volume>             nfs    rw,bg,hard,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,vers=3,nointr,timeo=600,tcp
    - startup the instance and repeat on Node 2

  • Multiple VPN Connections through Wireless router

I have an old LinkSys Wireless router that I use at home to connect to my work's VPN. Recvently I've added a few machines to my network. I need 2 or 3 of them connected to the VPN at work simultaneously. However, if I connect more than one computer to the VPN one of them always drops. I cannot get more than one connection to the VPN. All 3 connections use a different ID and password so it is not an account problem.
My question is, is this a limitation of the older router? And if I get a new LinkSys Wireless-G router will that allow me to connect more than one machine to the VPN?
    Thank You,

    Hi,
I'm facing the same issue. i have WRT54G.
You said something like "you will have to trigger the VPN ports instead of forwarding them."
Dunno what it means, can you explain it in more non-network-techy language... something which i can do... dunno if i can do it!
