Rules between CORES and RAM?

I´m waiting for my MP Westemere 6 cores 3.33 Ghz and I´ll order RAM soon.
Is there any rule to determine how much RAM vs the number of cores is a good choice? Or any other good rule to follow?
Is there such a case as too much RAM? Or a minimum to work properly?
I´ll be using Adobe and Apple Pro apps (Vectorial, Raw Photo and 1080p video HD).
32GB seems to be my max. (4x8GB) available/supported.

Thanks.

Grosso modo, I need a 100-120 GB disk (with my HOME moved - thank for the tip).
Home: 183 GB
My iTunes library 500GB is on an external disc ,-) My FCP scratch too.
About SSD:
1.
2,5 or 3,5" SSD; they (OCZ) say that 3,5" are for high-end desktop computers!? Just marketing?
2.
The SSD use is "just" for a faster boot (I saw some OWC videos) or will improve the overall performance of the Applications, including Pro Applications, browsing, iTunes, etc? Worth the money (price per GB is huge)?
Are you, rdru, a developer? What kind?
Regards/Abraço
First: Check your Library for how these 73GB are distributed.
With the Library folder open, control-click the window and select Show Option Views.
Then select Calculate all Sizes.
It will eventually show how much space is used in each sub-folder.
73GB is TOO much. You may have lots of cache space that may be useless ...
You should try to shrink your Library folder.
Second:
I do run the Monolingual application that allows one to remove unused code (like PPC and
other archs other than x86 and x86 64bits) , and languages other than Portuguese and English.
Some Apple Applications (and its associated folders on Library/Application Support) shrink to
1/4 of their original size. (search versiontracker.com)
The Swap space used by the OS X is housed in the Boot drive (on your future SDD).
You should have at least 20GB free on the SSD right after boot. More if your Swap space
gets larger.
Third:
The 2.5"; and 3.5"; SSDs are the SAME internally. Choose the size based on your usage.
The 2.5' OCZ SSDs come with a bracket that adapts it to 3.5"; standard size.
Fourth:
The OCZ SSDs have throughput topping 250MB/seg while the maximum throughput of
a Hitachi DeckStar 7K2000 is 130MB/sec and Caviar Black 2TB a little over 130MB/sec.
The best spec of the SSDs are their access time between 0.5-2 microsecond while the hard drives
above are around 8-12 milliseconds. These means that when lots of small reads are executed
the SSDs are way MUCH BETTER than the hard drives.
Using it as BootApplicationsSwap will speed the Application load time and its execution
since it frequently has to load (as needed) other parts of its code from the disk.
Fifth:
I am a researcher and use Macs since the Lisa (predecessor of the Macs) on 1984 ...
(probably before you were born ...)
Did you find the stores that sell OWC parts in Europe??
Success with your new/future Mac Pro.

  • Automatic mapping of fields in transformation between DSO and Infosource.

    Hello BI Experts,
When i migrate the update rule between DSO and infosource in to transformation, the log of successful copy of routines and hence the creation of transformation appears. But when i open the transformation for activating it, there is no mapping between the fields as well no routines appear.
Please suggest me the way out of it.
    Points will be assigned.
    Regards,
    Vinayak

    VGM,
By the way how are you migrating the routines into BI 7 from 3.x??? And moreover the update routine has to be a local routine in BI 7 or else a start routine or else end routine??? You need to decide where it will be applicable and  then copy the old code and modify it and paste the same. If you are creating any start or end routines to populate data for some object, do remember that the objects should map with any one of the object from Infosource.
    Hope this helps

  • What is the difference between Azure RemoteApp Basic vs Standard Plans in terms of compute cores and memory?

So our customer has asked us to compare compare Amazon Workspace and Azure RemoteApp offerings for them to choose from. While looking at Amazon Workspace, it clealy defines bundles with specific CPU cores, memory and user storage. However, Azure RemoteApp
only specifies user storage and vaguely compares its basic vs. standard plans in terms of "task worker" vs. "information worker"
I tried looking up its documentation but couldn't find specific CPU cores that are dedicated per user in basic vs. standard plans. I have following questions:
Can anyone point me in the right direction or help understand how many CPU cores and memory are dedicated (or shared) per user in each plan?
Our customer would most likely need a "custom" image for their custom apps. Is it possible for us to choose specific CPU cores and memory for the users to be able to run their apps in azure remoteapp?
In case i am misunderstanding the basic difference between AWS workspace and Azure RemoteApp, i'd appreciate some help in understanding it as well.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
With Azure RemoteApp users see just the applications themselves, and the applications appear to be running on their local machine similar to other programs.  With Workspaces users connect to a full desktop and launch applications within that.
    1. Azure RemoteApp currently uses size A3 Virtual Machines, which have 4 vCPUs and 7GB RAM.  Under Basic each VM can have a maximum of 16 users using it whereas under Standard each VM is limited to 10 users.  The amount of CPU available
to a user depends on what the current demands are on the CPU at that moment from other users and system processes that may be on the server.
For example, say a user is logged on to a VM with 3 other users and the other users are idle (not consuming any CPU).  At that moment the user could use all 4 vCPUs if a program they are running needed to.  If a few moments later
the other 3 users all needed lots of CPU as well, then the first user would only have approximately 1 vCPU for their use.  The process is dynamic and seeks to give each user their fair share of available CPU when there are multiple users demanding CPU.
Under the Standard plan a user will receive approximately a minimum of .4 vCPU assuming that the VM has the maximum number of users logged on and that all users are using as much CPU as possible at a given moment.  Under the Basic plan the approximate
    minimum would be .25 vCPU.
    2. You cannot choose the specific number of cores and memory.  What you can do is choose the Azure RemoteApp billing plan, which affects the user density of each VM as described above.  If you need a lower density than Standard you
    may contact support.

No need to type in all caps - we HEAR you!
I would take a look at the internal drives offered by both Crucial (click the link "Internal Hard Drives Now Available") and OWC. I would stay away from Western Digital drives as they seem to have problems on a number of Mac models.
You can also shop for RAM at Crucial and OWC - just select the System Scanner tab at the Crucial website to find out which memory is right for your machine.

  • Trying to decide between i7 and quad core - was told that i7 will overheat?

    Hi,
Did some searching in old threads on this here and online - seemed inconclusive so thought I'd ask again since the Core i7s have been out a while now.
I've been trying to decide between buying a quad core and one of the recent MPB 15" i7s (specifically the 2.66 with the hi res non glare screen). I use FCP, DVDSP, Photoshop etc - usually for several hours a day.
Although the quad core seems the logical choice, I'm on a budget would like some wiggle room to get some other gear - if I get the MPB, I'd be able to sell my 13" 2.53 Core 2 Duo and get that gear. On the other hand, I'm trying to think long term in terms of the viability of the machine I buy.
Just got off the phone with MacMall who told me that because the quad core uses physical cores and the MPB Core i7 uses virtual cores there is a substantial overheating issue with the MPB if you're doing sustained work - say working in Photoshop all day, as I often do. He said that the MBP Core i7s weren't designed to do that so the overheating could cause logic board and other issues over time.
Has anyone experienced this?? Or if you have other thoughts on my dilemma, would love to hear them.
    Thanks!
    cb

I will be a bit more blunt than the other person. Whomever you talked to at MacMall was full of it.
Either you transcribed the details of the conversation wrong, or they have no clue what they're talking about.
Even if you're doing a lot of work in Photoshop all day, the odds of you doing anything that requires a lot of sustained heavy action by the CPU is going to be low. There might be 5 minutes worth of something here or there, but most of the time it's probably going to be pretty limited CPU wise.
There's a reason Apple doesn't put the Core i5 or i7 into the 13" MBPs, and that's because there's just not enough room in the case for the second fan the 15 and 17" models have.
But long story short, Apple isn't like HP or Acer, who will stuff desktop CPUs into laptops because there's some idiot out there who will buy it. And it would be pretty stupid to put a high end CPU like the Core i7 into a laptop, and then expect people NOT to use it.
MBPs aren't really designed for hours worth of sustained work like you'd get from gaming, but I don't think you'd run into any problems with Photoshop.

  • Difference between defun and Rule

    Hi all,
Does anyone know the difference between <defun> and <Rule>? Can <defun> be used to generate a library of methods.. the only thing I think is you have to include the form with all these defun's to call any of those functions.
Would be nice if <defun> uses the same methodology as most programming languages... local variables are stored on stack, have higher precedence than global variables, their value is lost once the function returns, etc.... This is not the case in <Rule> where it can access the variables in the workflow which calls the rules! + localScope=false is the default value, etc.
Any other differences? (also validate if the differences I mentioned are correct).
    Thanks,
    Adi.

    Jayant,
The Implementation Rule is we write required SQL codes and Business rule is more Description about what is the Implementation rule is about. Lets say for an Example CASE WHEN COLUMN='ID' THEN 1 ELSE NULL END so the Business rule can write some thing like this - To check for column value if value is ID then populate as 1 else populate Null.
Hope this answers your question. If in case you worrying about or thinking should i need to write in Business rule i would say dont worry about it.
Let me know if you are looking for more information.

  • Is there a documented correlation between high CPU/RAM usage and poor system performance?

I realize this subject is not black and white and has quite a bit of depth to it as high usage of either the CPU or RAM does not necessarily mean that a computer is running slowly.
However, is there any documentation, scientific research or academic journal that makes a correlation between poor system performance and the consumption of system resources.
It goes without saying that if you use all your RAM then there won't be any available for additional programs, but can this be substantiated with metrical data?

  • New Mac Pro - some questions about setup and RAM

After debating between iMac and Mac Pro, I decided on a refurb SINGLE 2.8 quad-core Mac Pro.
Somewhere in these discussions (can't find it now) I thought I saw recommendations to zero out the hard drive and re-install the system when it arrives. Is this necessary?
Also, I plan to use the single processor savings to buy RAM. When I go to the Crucial site, they have a choice of RAM for 4-core or 8-core. Mine is only 4-core, but would I choose the 8-core option to get the correct RAM for 2008 models?
In general, when it comes to buying and installing RAM, should I follow the 8-core directions? Will having a single processor change anything to do with upgrades or expansion?
Thanks. Hope I didn't ask too much in one post.

Somewhere in these discussions (can't find it now) I thought I saw recommendations to zero out the hard drive and re-install the system when it arrives. Is this necessary?
No, that really isn't necessary. If you were prepping a new bare drive that had never been used or you were installing OS X on a drive that had once been used for Windows, then zeroing the drive is quite appropriate.
All the Mac Pros use the same type of RAM. The Late 2008 models use the faster PC2-6400 800 MHz RAM, but the other specs are the same - ECC, Fully buffered, heat sink. The RAM and installation is the same regardless of cores.
RAM should be installed minimally in matched pairs, optimally in matched quads. The following illustrations show how it should be installed:

  • Playback of clips only plays between 4 and 12 frames

    Hi all,
I am fairly new to Premiere, have used After Effects CS4 to produce some clips, but need something that handles editing better, and I thought I would give Premiere CS4 a try.
Unfortunately, I can't get Source or Sequence preview working.  I click the play button and the video plays for about 1/2 to 1/4 or a second (between 4 and 16 frames) and then stops, returning to the place where I hit play.  Almost like I had selected an in and out of 14 frames and hit "play in to out".
The duration of the playback is random, but never more than a full second.
The computer I am on is:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      OS: Snow Leopard 10.6.2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
      L2 Cache: 3 MB
      Memory: 4 GB
      Bus Speed: 800 MHz
      Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
      Bus: PCIe
      VRAM (Total): 256 MB
      Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
      RAM Size: 4 GB
      Type: DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz
      HDD: 500Gb 7200RPM (50% empty)
Apple system updater says I am up to date.
    I have Adobe Premiere CS4 installed (trial) 4.2.1 (003 (MC: 166418))
Adobe Updater says I am up to date.
I have done the following to try and resolve:
    * Tried different source files (mp4, mov)
    * Tried rendering a video in After Effects CS4 as MOV H264 and importing
    * Tried putting still frames on the time line and playing those (no effects, no transitions)
    * Tried playing no video, just music
    * Ensure that "clear all markers" is done on the source and preview monitors
    * Ensure loop is not playing
    * Force in and out markers to a 5 second clip and press play
    * Full deinstall and reinstall of all adobe products (I had some CS3 left overs that I cleaned out)
    * Deleted all adobe application preferences folders before reinstall
    * Deleted plugin cache
    * Created new projects and tried all the above.
I have tried shutting down every other program before running Premiere, it is definitely not a resources problem, there is 3Gb of RAM free and CPUs sitting at 5% when I try this.
I am looking at buying Premiere, but if I can't get playback to work it's a bit of a waste
Anyway, any help or pointers would be appreciated!
    Mikel

Thanks everyone for the long thread and lots of comments, unfortunately I have tried them all.
I even purchased a full copy of Premiere Pro (as part of a Masters collection set) and this still has not fixed the problem.
The screen recording of my problem is exactly the same as the one linked to here: Screen Recording 2 720p.mov, and I am also going to open a support ticket with Adobe.
Another point is that it even does not work on a tiny video that I used (320 x 240px)  Still same problems.
    This is very frustrating.
It should be noted that After Effects and Encore both play videos fine in a similar situation, it is just Premiere that is bombing out.
See the first post for my configuration, it is still the same, except now I own a full copy of Premiere Pro as part of CS4 Masters collection.
    Any further ideas?
    Mikel
