Run Apple Script in User Space

Hi,
My application runs in administrator privileges . I want to run an apple script from the application in user space .
Please guide me .
Thanks

Please be more specific about what you're trying to do. An applescript run with administrator permissions should have no problem running within the context of a non-admin user. What problem are you running into?

  • Launchd - can it run a script when users log in OR switch?

    I'm hoping to find someone who knows all the gory details of launchd. Here's the why and what: I'm trying to coerce Aperture into letting two users on the same computer share the same Aperture Library, both able to import photos and see and use what the other has done. Initially it is no problem, change the permissions so everyone has read/write/execute, put the Library in a common area, and point both person's Aperture at it. The problem is that Aperture changes permissions of things inside the Library as you use it, and especially when one person imports, the other person can't see that stuff.
    So I want to run a script whenever someone logs in or becomes the active user by fast user switching; the script will simply change ownership and permissions of the library and everything in it to restore full access.
    After days of research and testing, I made a test launchd plist file (this is the configuration file or agent that launchd looks at and runs your script when criteria are met). It sits in /Library/LaunchAgents/, here it is:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Label</key>
    <string>org.jim.test</string>
    <key>LimitLoadToSessionType</key>
    <string>LoginWindow</string>
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/Library/Scripts/testscript.sh</string>
    </array>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    <key>StandardErrorPath</key>
    <string>/Users/jim/Desktop/test.err</string>
    <key>StandardOutPath</key>
    <string>/Users/jim/Desktop/test.out</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    The actual test script is sitting in /Library/Scripts/:
    #!/bin/bash
    echo "org.jim.test.plist was run at `date`"
    So if the plist is loaded and the script run, the date and time are written in the test.out file on my desktop. This thing runs great when a user logs in. The problem is, it doesn't run when users switch by fast user switching. In reading the documentation, it was vague about this, whether that could be done; I thought it could.
    Can anyone help with a way to get the script to run when any user takes control by any means? As an added complication, which I'll worry about later, the script has to run as root because it's the only way to get the ownership and permissions changed.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    BobHarris is the MAN. ACLs seem to have worked. I put the Aperture Library in /Users/Shared/ApertureLibrary, restored the regular permissions as best I could (me as owner, staff as group, 755), pointed each person's Aperture to the library, then proceeded with the ACL magic. First I created a group for my wife and I, called 'aperture', in the Accounts preference pane. That was to simplify the ACLs (one entry instead of 2) and so that other users (son) aren't able to muck it up.
    It took one stinking Terminal command (note that 'aperture' at the beginning of the quote is the group, not the program, folder or library):
    chmod -R +a "aperture allow list,addfile,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" ApertureLibrary.aplibrary
    I was unsure whether this list of permissions was necessary or sufficient, but it seems to have worked so far. Both users can access the library. I imported a different picture by each user, and the other user could then see and delete the picture imported by the other. This was not possible before.
    Bob, thanks for the great idea. After a little more testing I'll post a complete how-to in the latest "how do we share Aperture" thread, and give you due credit. The bad news is all the launchd fun is over

  • ID CS5 on Mac 10.5.8 can't run java scripts from User folder

    I seem to have a problem with my java scripts in ID on my Mac. I store them in my user scripts folder, but while I can run any applescripts in the folder, doubleclicking on any of the java scripts gets me exactly nothing. If I open the scripts in Extend Script Toolkit and run them from there, they will work, but I can't run them from within ID. The scripts in the Sample Script folder work. I've tried changing the script extentions, I've opened them in the toolkit and resaved them. Still no response at all when I doubleclick on them in the scripts panel. Any idea what could be wrong? I can run the same scripts from within ID on my Windows laptop, so I don't think the scripts themselves are at fault. In fact, I just moved them into the Sample scripts folder, and they run with no problem. Does the User script folder just not work?

    Not sure what a screenshot will tell you, but here you go.
    Well, I was hoping that the icon next to the scripts would be instructive.
    Apparently not, though!
    You said the same scripts work fine if you move them into the Application Scripts folder, specifically the Sample Scripts folder. I assume, then, that the sample scripts also break if moved to the User Scripts folder?
    Is your User Scripts folder (and thus your home directory) on a non-local (network) filesystem? Are the permissions on it wacky? If you Reveal In Finder it, and Get Info, do you see anything out of the ordinary?
    What if you delete it (err, move it aside) and recreate it?
    This seems pretty strange...

  • Running an apple script from excel

    I have been trying to find some visual basic code to run an apple script from an excel workbook for weeks now, but after searching everehwere online and asking in multiple excel forums I have yet to find an answer. It appears it should be possible (as windows users of excel are able to do it, although running different files not apple scripts), but I cant get it to work on a mac, and I have not been able to come accross someone that is running excel on OSX that has an answer. Hoping I can find some mac excel users with apple script and visual basic knowledge here that might have an answer.
    This is a link to the question I posted on excel forum a couple of weeks ago:

  • Apple Script to make Pages open in a user-selected screen position

    This is a follow-up to a response/script made previously by Yvan KOENIG that enables Pages to open a Pages template in a user-selected "left" position.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9100331#9100331
    This works great for me, but I'd like to take this one step further, if possible. I'm naïve when it comes to Apple Scripts
    Currently, if I use the script, it opens up in 100% 'fit-width' view as follows:
    http://trials.sent.com/pages/100.png
    What I'd like it to do is to open up in 125% 'fit-width' view as follows:
    http://trials.sent.com/pages/125.png
    I'd like to therefore ask if it's possible to somehow enable this in the script above.

    I looked at the English version.
    Let me say you that you are a funny guy.
    Set width and set "Fit Width" are incompatible commands.
    On my 1920 x 1200 screen, if I set scale to 125%, Fit Width is disabled.
    If I check "Fit width", the size remains unchanged but is no longer selected.
    On a smaller display, "Fit Width" will set the page in the "100%" mode.
    My guess is that it's what you get.
    As I am a good guy,
    I add some instructions in the code.
    Now you may activate several settings to fit your needs (when they are technically compatibles).

  • How to Prompt for User/Pass Running Shell Script Remotely through ARD

    So I finally got my Active Directory Script working! However, I realized that I'm not the only one going to be running this script and to have my user name and password in the script itself is beyond foolish. While I know it's possible just to have whoever's running the script to manually add their username and password, I'd prefer to have prompts to make things easier for the rest of my team.
    Here's my current script. I've tested it on the machine I'm connecting to Active Directory and it works fine if you run it on the machine itself in terminal. However, I'm going to be doing this on about 150 machines and the whole point of the script is to do it remotely.
    #! /bin/bash
    MACNAME=$(scutil --get ComputerName)
    read -p "User Name: " USER
    read -p "Password for $USER: " PASS
    dsconfigad -add "CORP.DOMAIN.NET" \
    -username $USER \
    -password $PASS \
    -computer $MACNAME \
    -mobile disable \
    -mobileconfirm disable \
    -localhome enable \
    -useuncpath enable \
    -shell /bin/bash \
    -ou OU=Macs,CN=Computers,DC=corp,DC=DOMAIN,DC=net \
    -force \
    -localpassword "PASSWORD" \
    -groups "GROUPS"
    When I run the UNIX script through ARD to a machine, I get no prompts for USER or PASS. In fact, it gives me the following error "dsconfigad: Authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation. (5202)" So it's not asking for a user name and password.
    Is there any way to make a shell script prompt you for a User Name and Password when you're sending commands remotely through ARD? Or is there another way to do this?
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Best solution is to create an account that is exclusive to binding machines.  By doing this, you can embed the user name and password in the script.  Heck, you can post it on your website.  If the account is configured properly, it will only be able to create machine records in a defined container.  If you are mixing Macs and PCs in your AD domain, I also recommend creating an isolated container for your Mac records.  Now, the account has even less access rights as you can make it so it only has rights to the Mac container.
    Otherwise, ARD does not prompt.  You can play around with an expect script but the reality is that you are still embedding the credentials in the script so it really does not achieve what you want.  ARD is not an interactive shell scripting tool.  It is more a fire and forget.

  • Applescript: How to run a script once upon logon for multiple users

    I'm deploying a NetRestore image to about 150 Macs which will be using Active Directory and I've designed a custom default user for each new user. However, our system requires a specialized certificate that has to be installed on the local login.keychain for each user otherwise network connectivity is impacted.
    I've tried to use the security command through Terminal to install the certificate, but no matter what combination of commands, I cannot seem to get that to work properly even with an already-created user. While it will often say it's installed, the cert will not actually show up in the login keychain in Keychain Access. And the network connectivity is still impacted.
    So instead, I created a brief AppleScript that just gives the user brief instructions to click "Add" on the prompt for which Keychain to add the cert and then "Always Trust" for the "This cert is not verified" prompt. Then it launches Keychain Access. Originally, I was going to have it actually click the buttons for the user, but I realized trying to get the whole Accessibility apps and assitive devices to work on every new user would be a nightmare.
    I created the script on another 10.9 Mac using Automator to make it an actual application. I've used the instructions in OS X: Using AppleScript with Accessibility and Security features in Mavericks to sign it and I'm using root to move it from its network location into the Applications folder. I've adjusted the permissions to allow all Admin users to r/w (along with everyone else). To the root user, it shows as a usable application, but every other user on the Mac sees it as damaged/incomplete.
    What I want to do is add it to the default Login Items, so I can run the final AppleScript command to simply remove the login items listing. That way I don't need to worry about it running again, but it's still available for the next user to sign onto the deployed Mac.
    I know it's a little convoluted, but this is the final piece to the NetRestore deployment I've been working on for months. Any suggestions on how to make this work (or even a completely different solution) would be greatly appreciated.
    Here was the original shell script in case you're curious.
    #!/bin/bash
    ## Prompt for current user admin for use in Certificate Install
    while :; do # Loop until valid input is entered or Cancel is pressed.
        localpass=$(osascript -e 'Tell application "System Events" to display dialog "Enter your password for Lync Setup:" default answer "" with hidden answer' -e 'text returned of result' 2>/dev/null)
        if (( $? )); then exit 1; fi  # Abort, if user pressed Cancel.
        localpass=$(echo -n "$localpass" | sed 's/^ *//' | sed 's/ *$//')  # Trim leading and trailing whitespace.
        if [[ -z "$localpass" ]]; then
            # The user left the password field blank.
            osascript -e 'Tell application "System Events" to display alert "You must enter the local user password; please try again." as warning' >/dev/null
            # Continue loop to prompt again.
        else
            # Valid input: exit loop and continue.
            break
        fi
    done
    echo $localpass | sudo security import /'StartupFiles'/bn-virtual.crt ~/Library/Keychain/login.keychain
    osascript -e 'tell Application "System Events" to delete every login item whose name is "LyncCert"
    And this is the AppleScript itself. (I used the \ to make it easier to read. The first line is actually one complete command)
    display dialog "Click OK to start installing Mac Network Certificate." & return & return & \
    "In the following prompts, click the 'Add' then 'Always Trust'." & return & return & \
    After you have clicked 'Always Trust', quit Keychain Access." default button 1 with title \
    "Mac Network Certificate Install"
    activate application "Keychain Access"
    tell application "Finder" to open POSIX file "/StartupFiles/bn-virtualcar.crt"
    tell application "System Events" to delete login item "Lync-AppleScript"
    end
    Thank you for your help!

    I have run into this same issue. Are you trying to run the script one time as a new  user logs in or everytime a user logs in?

  • How to generate an alert box with some message by Apple Script after every user login

    Hi,
    I am looking into an automation where whenever a user comes and does a login on his/her mac. It should pop an alert message to him.
    I want to achieve this in applescript.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks in advance for your suggestions and help!
    Abhishek

    Do you want it to run on any, unspecified user account? or specific users?
    If specific users, save the script as an application and save it in their Login Items.
    If you want all users then a hybrid AppleScript/shell script combo might be your best bet.
    Create a shell/AppleScript:
    #! /usr/bin/osascript
    tell application "Finder" to display dialog "welcome"
    Then create a launchd agent in
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    that will cause the script to load whenever any user logs in. Get yourself a copy of Lingon if you're not famiiar with creating launchd .plists

  • Passing parameters with spaces to SCCM Run PowerShell Script task

    I am working on an OS deployment task sequence in SCCM 2012 R2 with several Run PowerShell Script tasks.  Most of them run fine, but I am having trouble with the one I need to pass parameters to.
    The parameters I need to pass are:
    -ComputerOU "ou=All Workstations,dc=contoso,dc=com" -GroupDN "cn=Group1,ou=All Groups,dc=contoso,dc=com"
    I have that line (with actual DNs) entered in Parameters of the task.
    But when the script runs on the target machine, the values of the parameters in the script are truncated at the spaces.  $ComputerOU is set to "ou=All" and $GroupDN is set to "cn=Group1,ou=all"
    What syntax should I be using the Parameters field of the Task in order to properly pass PowerShell parameter string values that include spaces?
    Tim Curwick
    MadWithPowerShell.com

    Thank you, TC, but I am not calling the parameters from within PowerShell.
    The parameters are in the settings of a task sequence task to be used by the task to launch a script.  The syntax I am using would be correct for use within PowerShell or from a command line or batch script, but SCCM appears to be doing some parsing
    before or while it is passing them to the script, possibly dropping the quotes which causes mishandling of the spaces in the string values.
    Historically, it is always challenging to give one application parameters to pass to another application, and the required syntax can get quite tricky when the two application handle quotes or spaces differently, or when the parent application wants to parse
    something intended to be passed on as is to the child application.
    I'm sure someone has already figured out what the syntax needs to be for doing this with an SCCM 'Run PowerShell Script" task, it's just one of those issues that is hard to Google effectively.
    Any other ideas?

    Thanks. Short of the sort of "generic" suggestions of restaring your system, if you haven't, and repairing disk permissions and verifying the disk, I don't have any advice right now. I'll do some research and see if I can come across anything. Meanwhile, someone else may have an idea.
