Run Process in TTY session

I'm working on a linux machine, and have a process that I want to launch from within a java program (please, no sermons about platform dependence and choosing java as a technology. I have my reasons).
This process typically writes a few questions out to stdout and asks for responses on stdin. My java program has already gathered all of the information necessary to answer these questions, and done so in what I believe is a more professional and efficient manner. I would like to be able to simply answer these questions by attaching readers and writers to the input and output streams of the process (think expect script, but written in Java).
The problem is that the process I'm launching seems to know that it has attached to a process that is not part of a tty session, so instead of posing it's questions on stdout and looking for input on stdin, it puts up dialog boxes.
Does anybody know how to start a process and associate it with a tty session, or fool it into thinking it's running with a tty session, so that it will accept input on stdin?

I don't know if this will work for you or not, probaby not but I guess it's worth a try.
What happens to the program if DISPLAY is not set?
It seems to me that it would not be able to open any X windows, but then again it might just give up.
I assume that you can't modify the program and that it is not possible/feasible to have the author modify it so that you can provide the info in some other manner, say an answer file or something.Unfortunately, that's not an option, because after it does its information gathering, it then opens a window that I DO want displayed on screen.
Anybody else know how to do something like this? Every work around I've tried has failed. I'm stuck.
I suspect you can craft a script which will exhibit the same behavior that is causing you so much trouble within java.
Thus separating the question completely from java. One advantage to that is that you can then pose the question on other non-java related sites.
If you can find a solution using the script only then you can implement it in java, if by no other means calling the script.
If you cannot then nothing you do will fix it in java.
I suspect you will not be able to do it. Thus you would need to look for another solution. As suggested above telnet (even into your local box) and see if you can get it to go that way.
Another alternative would be to use a keyboard pusher (perhaps Robot or as an example AutoIt works nicely on windows.) That would allow you to simulate the user experience and then some tricks like hiding the first window behind a splash screen might allow it to simulate what you want.

  • Break a dependency of a running process on the X session

Is it possible to break a dependency of a running process that was started on an X session such that I can exit the X session and the process still runs?  Example:
    *Login to X
*Start an application, for example a file transfer that will take several hours
If I log out of X, that process will die along with anything else I am running under X.  I want to be able to take that process and somehow push it out of the xsession so it will continue to run even after I log out of X or even stop X all together (say drop down to runmode 3).

    tmux or screen...
Or, if you are referring to a process that is currently running, you could try reptyr

I Got the same problem but at that time i have installed GUI of lower version. WHen i have upgraded the GUI it worked fine. Better you check once the SAPGUI configuration.

  • Multiple crashes fixed by turning off hardware and Flash acceleration; very slow now. Takes five seconds to exit and still listed as a running process

A workaround was suggested by a member of the community to turn off both hardware and Flash acceleration. It worked fine (no crashes since), but runs very slowly. In particular, takes five seconds to exit and is often still listed as a running process. Very slow in connecting to Web pages, and very slow loading them because of the graphics. Very slow in loading video. I expected slower responses, but this is REALLY slow. I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 and an Nvidia GE Force 7800 graphics card with all the drivers updated and the plugins for Firefox mostly set on "ask to activate". Should I expect this much reduction in performance when the workaround I mentioned was put into place? If so, it's half a loaf at best. The only thing questionable is that I have two Youtube downloaders that I am trying, but I made the assumption that these were only applied when you downloaded something from Youtube.

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes": do not clear the Cookies
If you clear cookies then Firefox will also try to remove cookies created by plugins and that requires to start plugin-container processes that can slow down closing Firefox.
Instead let the cookies expire when Firefox is closed to make them session cookies.

  • ORABPEL-05002 for long running process

    Hi everybody,
My question is related with a long running process I have designed and which, after running for a couple of days, ends by reporting the ORABPEL-05002 error:
    ===============================================================

Looking in the Manual Recovery screen, I can see an Activity I can recover. It's about an assign Activity where I'm doing a single boolean assignation.
Of course, together with the ORABPEL-05002 error I got also the 'Transaction was rolled back: time out' message. Note that I have modified the transaction-timeout value to 180000. The error occurs during the night, with no heavy load of the server.
Recovering the assign activity brings back the process in the running state.
    My process pattern:
    while (1 == 1) {
    do activity;
    wait_timeout();
So, I have the following questions:
    1. Which is cause of this error?
    2. How may I automatically recover this lost activity? RecoveryAgent?
    Any suggestion is appreciated.
    Regards,
    amo

These are the possible cause to the problem and their solutions:
Poor performance of the dehydration database If you are using Oracle Lite as dehydration store, please switch to use Oracle 9i or 10g. If Oracle 9i/10g is already in use, check the database parameter 'process' and 'session' to make sure it can handle the expected throughput.
OC4J has too few available connections to the dehydration database. Increase the maxConnection number of the BPELServerDataSource at the BPEL_HOME/integration/orabpel/system/appserver/oc4j/j2ee/home/config/data-sources.xml (for developer edition) or IAS_HOME/j2ee/OC4J_BPEL/config/data-sources.xml (mid-tier installation).
Size of message is too big Two ways to deal with this problem:
Increase the transaction timeout at PEL_HOME/integration/orabpel/system/appserver/oc4j/j2ee/home/config/server.xml (developer edition) or IAS_HOME/j2ee/OC4J_BPEL/config/server.xml (mid-tier installation)
Decrease the auditLevel from BPELConsole -> Manage BPEL Domain -> Configurations tab. Doing so will reduce the amount of data saved to the dehydration store.

  • Transaction ME21n (Will not run as a BACKGROUND SESSION)

The requirement is to generate Purchase Orders (Stock Transport Orders to be precise).
The RFC has to create a session which will be executed...say...before midnight to generate the sto (TC -> SM35).
I have used BDC inside my RFC calling the transaction ME21n. It runs fine as a foreground session, but will give a error if the session is run as a background session (Due to the dropdown lists in ME21n I guess).
The solution I figured out is to use ME21. This does execute in the background successfully.
But given the fact that ME21 is the OLD transaction and ME21n (enjoy sap transaction, right?) to be the one to be used now, my dilemma is in choosing ME21 and risk the scenario of this transaction being obsolete and not supported the SAP for technical support in the future.
Can any body please help me on this.
    Thank you.

    hello,
with transaction VL10BATCH you can create new variants, and shedule background jobs. This should work.
However, you need another user role. (on the last tab of the selection screen of VL10B)
It is the F code profile you have to change. With this profile you can choose whether a list needs to be shown, or whether the deliveries have to be created right away (without showing the list). The second option should work in background. After delivery creation, you can check the   log using transaction V_SA.
So you need to create a selection variant with changed user-role for the backround job.
You can maintain user-roles via transaction VL10CUA.
    You can input-enable user-role via transaction VL10CUV.
If you don't want the users to be able to run VL10B without showing the list, you have to create your own scenario, and use VL10X to start this scenario. Although this is not really necessary.
I hope this makes things more clear for you.
    regards,
    Joris.

           difficulties.
o  Background processing of Transaction VL10* does not generate
deliveries but only a list in the spool.
    Additional key words
    VL10BATCH, VL10A, VL10B, VL10C, VL10D, VL10E
    Cause and prerequisites
    Solution
For planning the delivery creation in background processing you must
o  activate a user role for immediate creation of deliveries (in the
standard system, the immediate delivery creation is deactivated
for all user roles for reasons of safety),
o  create a selection variant for one of Transactions VL10*.
Activation of the user role for background processing
The user role controls the entire processing of the delivery list.
Within Transactions VL10*, you can display and maintain the user role on
the "User role" tab page. You can carry out the maintenance also via
Transaction VL10CUA. Note 301578 describes how to make a user role ready
    for input.
An F-code profile is linked to the user role. The F-code profile
controls the internal process of the transaction. Two F-code profiles
are provided in the standard system:
    o  0001 Display delivery list
    o  5001 Supply delivery list
In the user role you want to use for background processing, you have to
replace F-code profile (not "AllowedDialogFCodes") 0001 with profile
    5001:
    1.  Call Transaction VL10CUA for maintenance of the user roles.
    2.  You might want to copy one of standard user roles 5001 to 5103 that
is planned for processing in the background to a separate role in
the customer namespace, for example, 9001 or Z***.
    3.  Branch to the detail view of the user role and change the entry for
the F-code profile from "Display delivery list" to "Supply delivery
        list".
    Creation of the selection variant
    1.  Call the desired Transaction VL10* and branch to the "User role" ta
page. Do not use Transaction SE38 or VL10BATCH for variant
        maintenance of VL10*.
    2.  Here, enter the user role that you have maintained for background
        processing.
Caution! If you use a user role with an F-code profile for the
immediate creation of deliveries, you receive no dialog with a
shipping due list but the deliveries are created immediately at the
        start of the selection!
    3.  Enter the remaining selection criteria on the various other tab
        pages.
    4.  Select function "Goto -> Variants -> Save as variant..." and save
the selection criteria entered as a variant. You might classify the
variant as "Only for background processing", in order to avoid a
start of the delivery creation in the dialog by mistake.
    5.  Make sure that the objects of selection screen 1060 have been saved
and that checkboxes "Save field without values" are not filled with
all objects (in particular in Release 4.6B) for the desired
        settings.
You can schedule the selection variant via Transaction VL10BATCH for
    regular use in the batch.
    And also the OSS-note (301578) about input-enabling user-role:

On the selection screen of transaction family VL10*, the selection
criteria in the 'user role' tab are no longer ready for input of Release
    4.6C.
They are delivered in the standard SAP system not ready for input.
    Additional key words
    Cause and prerequisites
As of Release 4.6C, the ready for input status in the 'user role' tab is
linked to settings in the scenario and the user role.
    1.  In order to get the ready for input status for the "Role" field, set
"Allow assignment" to 'X' in the scenario that you are using
        (Transaction VL10CUV or SM31, V_T186V, T186V-ALLOW_USER_ROLE = 'X').
The system administrator (Customizing authorization) can then
determine whether only the user role preset in the system is allowed
or whether any number of other user roles may also be used for this
        scenario.
    2.  For the check box "Use list profile" and therefore all possible
settings for the "user role" tab, the ready for input status in the
user role can be allowed in "Chang. attrbute" (changeability of the
        attributes).
Set this field with Transaction VL10CUA for the used user role to
        'X' (Transaction VL10CUA, or SM31, V_T186, t186-CHANGE_ALLOW = 'X').
    Background:
The settings in the scenario and user role have in the course of time
become so wide-ranging and far-reaching that an additional feature had
to be implemented: a system administrator must be able restrict the
changes by the end user at different levels .
You now have the option of determining for every user role whether that
settings determined on the selection screen may be changed again.
You also have the option of determining in every scenario in which this
user role is used whether the change is allowed for another user role.
In the context of the fixed link of the scenario to a transaction and
therefore to the authorization concept of mySAP.com - user-roles can be
controlled at user level - whether the settings for the user role tab of
the selection screen of VL10* may be changed by a user or not.
    Solution
Maintain setting in scenario (VL10CUV) and user role (VL10CU)
    (Customizing authorization required).

  • How to process batch input session through program

    Hi Friends,
I am getting 5 batch input sessions in SM35,but  I want to process these all sessions through program without going to SM35.
How it is possible through Program?
    Please Guide me!
    Thanks,
    Yogesh

    Hi,
It's the report to run the batchinput sessions.
When you create to B.I. session, you can execute it by transaction SM35 (but it uses rsbdcsub) or rsbdcsub.
For example you can use it in the same program where you create B.I.:
Here the code to fill the structures of FI batch input
    standard....
    ...here it creates session...
    SUBMIT RFBIBL00 WITH DS_NAME = VA_FILE
WITH CALLMODE = CALLMODE AND RETURN.
    ....here it runs session....
SUBMIT RSBDCSUB WITH MAPPE = P_NAME
    WITH VON = SY-DATUM
    WITH BIS = SY-DATUM
    WITH FEHLER = ' '
    TO SAP-SPOOL
    LIST NAME P_NAME
    LIST DATASET P_NAME
    COVER TEXT P_NAME
    NEW LIST IDENTIFICATION ' '
    EXPORTING LIST TO MEMORY
    AND RETURN.

  • Handling long running processes in APEX

    Hello Experts,
    I need your help!
I would like to call a long running PL-Proc from an Apex-App. So I build a page for the parameters with the wizzard - all fine.
Pressing the button starts the pl-proc - thats also fine.
Problem: While the PL-Proc is running, there is no activity signaled in the browser. There is no way to see, that something is running in the background.
After the pl-proc is finished, the branch to an other site took place - so the "after process" action is working as desired.
I tried "javascript:html_Submit_Progress(this);" - but this is not a solution because there is only a very short time to reload the page itself. The PL-Proc need much more time.
Is there a way to show the user, that background action is running?
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks for your help!
    Kind regards,
    Frank

A few things to keep in mind. The animated gif solutions don't show a true progress bar indicator, it's just an animation on a loop. If the process takes too long, you will hit the session timeout value defined for Oracle HTTP Server.
Another thought is this. In the code that is the long running process, make calls to [dbms_application_info.set_session_longops|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/appdev.111/b28419/d_appinf.htm#i996999] that indicate the real progress in the code. Then have a page that queries v$session_longops and refreshes every x (say 5 seconds). That page could even have an animated gif on it to indicate there is still activity.

  • How to run the Batch input session(SM35) in background thru Report program

    Hi Experts,
I am working in one modification report requirement ,the report is Mass upload will update and run the file via batch input session. The client requirement is to implement the report execution in background mode , the batch input session will process automatically (ie. the job runs the batch input session in background and process the session ends).
Currently, the report calls SM35 to write a batch input session and the user manually selects the session and record the transactions.
Once the Transaction enters and the selection-screen inputs are given, then the transaction executed in background mode and all the above batch input process to be implemented.
Please advise and guide me, how to proceed.
I need your guidance to proceed via Call transaction using bdcdata statement, if it can be achieved the requirement.
    Thanks & Regards
    San.

    Hi Arabind Prasad,
    Thanks for your inputs.
I know the process of the report Execution in background and job steps.
I want the inputs for how to upload thru Batch input session in background job and the session should also processed automatically
Currently the report logic declared like call transaction 'SM35' and skip first screen.Once the report (tcode) executed (not in background) It writes one session in SM35. The user should select the session and process the transaction manually.
The new requirement is, if the report (tcode) executes in background mode...what and how the batch input session should be declared and how it process automatically (like you said mode 'N').
Hope I am clear in my query.
    Please advise.
    Regards
    San.

  • Resume/restore a running process

i issue a command within an applescript and at a later time, need to access this new running process to check on its status. is this possible?
the command i am issuing is the HandBrakeCLI app which reencodes video's and can take many hours. the command in the applescript is of the syntax:
    +set hbcli_cmd to "/Applications/HandbrakeCLI -i /path/to/file -o /path/to/out/file -other -parameters"+
    +do shell script hbcli_cmd+
listing running processes with "ps -efwww", i can see the process. i need to "reopen" this process to see how its getting on. additionally, i would also need to place it back to the background as well!
    many thanks,
    jingo_man

thats exactly it. if i run the HandbrakeCLI command directly in a terminal session, it has an "interface" with progress, etc. i would like to be able to see this data if possible.
i used to have a linux machine, which i used the "screen" utility to run/wrap other commands inside. i could then restore that session or command. it was useful for overnight torrent work... would this be applicable on the osx platform?
or can i access it directly like you suggested?

  • Running process in bg, logged out. Logged in on other terminal, termination

    Hi,
    I have got an issue.
Is there a possibility to "somehow" terminate implicitly a process on other session (when you are just logged in and nothing more is done), which has been introduced some time ago ?
    I mean that scenario:
Terminal 1: run process in the background - jobs tells it is running. Then, I log out from this terminal.
Terminal 2: After above operations, I log in once again and do nothing. I am just logged in.
Is there a possibility, to terminate Terminal 1's process running in the background, when I do nothing on Terminal 2?

    Hi Guru,
I am in process of generating EWA reports for portal ,below are the steps I have completed successfully.

    2. Defined portal system in SMSY.
    3. completed SOLMAN_SETUP.
    4. Completed Setup Wizard for managed system.
    5. Deploy IS agent via SDM in Solman.

I have created EWA service session for portal but I am unable to process the service session in DSWP ,I have ran SM:EXEC SERVICES  job but still I am unable to process the session data.
System Configuratoi: SAP EHP 1 for SAP Solution Manager 7.0 and portal is netweaver 7.0
    Thanks
    Abullais

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem as this and have performed all the checks as specified but still my Java only NW 7 system shows "Dates for this session are overdue".
My Solman system is Ehp1 SPS 20 and all the managed system setup using the wizard has completed successfully. In Root Cause analysis I can see the data that the extractors have gathered on the J2EE system and in Enterprise Manager I can see the Introscope data also.
The only thing I can think of that may be affecting the EWA session is that after I added the system into the logical component that is part of the Production solution landscape the scheduled EWA session that then appeared for the J2EE system in the list of sessions had a date set for the next scheduled EWA run (29th March). To test the EWA report for my J2EE only system I used the "change date" option after clicking on the J2EE session and set it to 25th March (this changed on 24th March). The session date then reflected the EWA session for the J2EE only system woul run on the 25th.
Checking the session this morning I have the red flag with "Dates for this session are overdue" status.
The sessions for the ABAP based systems are working fine, it's only this one system that is J2EE only that I have a problem with.
    Any pointers ?
    Regards,
    Brian.

  • HTTP Server Hangs on Long Running Process

    Hi,
We are having an issue with our production environment where long running processes i.e. > 5 mins will cause the client application to stop responding. We notice that this is only affecting forms which has no activity during the busy period i.e. forms which call a back end DB procedure or function and waits for a response from the DB to say that the process is done.
Checking on the process itself from the DB shows that the process has completed successfully but somehow there's no response back to the client to say that it's completed. As a result, the client will be in busy status forever.
We are sure that the issue originates from the HTTP server because when we by-pass the HTTP server i.e. send the request directly to the Apps server, this behaviour is not happening.
By thew way, we are running on Oracle Forms 11g using Weblogic.
Changes made so far but to no effect:
    maxBlockTime=1800000 (web.xml)
    keepAlive=Off (httpd.conf)
    Timeout=1800 (httpd.conf)
    FORMS_TIMEOUT=60 (formsweb.cfg)
    heartbeat=4 (formsweb.cfg)
    Session-Timeout=30 (web.xml)
Can this be related to network configuration? If yes, what are the things to look for?
    Thanks.

as the response came from the server your httpd service is not getting active for that you
need to keep the httpd service alive so that the response can be obeyed
    just try this
    keepAlive=On (httpd.conf)

  • AP Payment Run Process

    Hi,
Please provide an overview of AP payment run process.
    Thanks,
    Teo

    Hi,
APP ( T.code F110) is used to make payments enmasse for one or more vendors/customers.
We can also group vendors/customers for more than 1 co.code for payments.
The entore config for APP is done in capsule T.code FBZP.
    Here are the steps:
    1. Set up paying and sending co.codes( In case of cRoss co. payments paying and sending co.codes will ahve to be different)
2.Set up a payment method for country and co.code 1 each for outgoing and incoming payments.
3.Define house banks and set up bank accounts for payment method with relative ranking.
    4.In F110 :
define the parameters like co,code;vendors etc
craete and edit a payment proposal where you can select the open items to be paid
create and run a payment run
    Hope this helps.
I would also recommend to go thru SAP help and also search this forum for further notes and specific queries in F110.
Pls assign points if this info was helpful.

  • Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. This doesn't work because Firefox is not a running process so I can't close it.

I don't use Firefox now because of this running problem. It started about a month ago. So when I access the task manager, Firefox does not show up in the running processes. Because of this, I can't end the task. I got tired and fed up of rebooting my computer just to use Firefox, so I just switched to IE8, and Opera and Google Chrome. I prefered Firefox but it also runs so so sooooo slowly now. IE is much much faster, as are the other browsers now. Once upon a time, I bragged to everyone about how fast Firefox used to be, where now I admit I don't use it because it's so slow now and it won't run anyway.
