Running app free of J2SE

I want to run my programs independent of the development
environment. For example, copy a java program to a
different computer and run it there, without having to
use the 'command prompt' window, and typing java "program".
Can that be done? How is it done?

Click on J2SE in the left-hand column near the top. Then click on "J2SE Download". Find the latest version (1.4.2 I believe) and there's a table of stuff you can download to install it. You can select to download just the JRE, for Windows XP, I believe. It's pretty easy to install -- IIRC, you just double click it in Windows and it installs itself like any other Windows app.
To create an executable jar, basically you just create a normal jar file but with some additional stuff in the manifest. (I'm assuming you already have an SDK installed.) Read the docs for the "jar" utility. Also there should be link to help pages for manifest files. Read those too. Basically you just put "Main-class: your.class.here" into a text file, then tell jar to include that text file into its manifest when it builds a jar, if I recall correctly. Pretty easy. If you use an IDE, it may have wizards for this stuff already. I know Eclipse does.

  • Is it possible to make some apps free for a limited duration?

I've been using apps both on the Android market and iTunes store.I've noticed that some apps
such as "Whatsapp messenger" which are free across all markets are paid apps on iTunes store.
It would be wonderful if such apps were free for iOS users also.So is it posible to make an app free
for iOS users also? If not, atleast is it possible to make it free for a limited duration?

Just FYI, Whatsapp is not free indefinitely even on Android phones. They give a one-year trial period after which you have to pay per year for the subscription (a miniscule amount, but you have to pay nonetheless), whereas with the iOS app you pay once up front and then don't have to pay again. So in the long run, the iOS version comes out cheaper (at least unless Whatsapp changes their pricing model). And also just FYI, Whatsapp doesn't work on the iPod touch, only on the iPhone.
In any case, as planb77 said, pricing is totally up to the developer of the app. It's completely the developer's choice what price to charge for an app.
    Regards.

  • Anyone here use the nike+ running app with the ipod touch?

i just got the new ipod touch 5g and wanted to get the nike+ running app because it's free, the alternate would be nike+ sensor is $20 extra.
    so i wanted to know:
    1. how accurate the nike+ running app is in term of recording distance? since i don't have the iphone i wont be able to use the gps function and im not sure if that'll be affecting the distance measurement.
    2. how accurate is the speed tracker? same as above, since the ipod doesn't have a gps function.
    3. in the setting for the app, what does it mean to reset calibration?

i just used it for the first time. it recorded that i ran for 2.5 miles, i went home and checked an online map and i only actually ran 2.03 miles. if i calibrate it, will my future runs be more accurate? also, what if one day i decide to run at a different pace or i walk a lot more, will this affect the distance recorded?

  • Running Apps on Wine\CodeWeavers

    Hi
Is it possible to run Windows Apps using Wine or the CodeWeavers program on Solaris 10 for i386. I guess it will not work on UltraSPARC CPUs and only on i386 boxes. Which is why I am posting here not in the general Solaris forum.
    Rob

I think you can register as a developer for free, and download the developer tools for Mac OS and iPhone OS, which includes a simulator to run iPhone/iPad apps, but not sure if you can run apps you downloaded, or only apps you build yourself.

alternately, check with the developer of the iPad app to see if they have a standard Mac OS X version.

  • Can basic phones run apps?

I really need to print out some text messages that I received.  I can't forward them to email because of enhanced features.  I see there are some apps for printing text messages.  Can basic phone run apps?  If so, can someone please tell me how I would go about getting the app and running it?
    Thank you

You might try bitpim software to move your texts from your phone to your computer and then print from there.  The software is free.

  • Installing Apps (free and paid) via Apple Configurator?

    Background:
I'm a Mac novice (15+ years Windows background), so I'm probably missing something obvious - please bear with me.
We're running latest Mac OS (10.8.2) and latest iOS (6.1) iPads & iPhones).
I'm trying to set up a batch of iPhones & iPads for a business.  We'll have several with very similar profiles (e.g. Sales Rep1, Sales Rep 2 etc), and it looks like Apple Configurator is the tool do help with this.
First up - is there a basic user guide for this?  That tells me what I can and can't actually expect to be able to do with the configurator app?
Secondly - I'm led to believe I can use this to bulk install a load of apps (free and/or paid). I can see how to drag the apps into the configurator, but no matter what I do next, the apps don't install onto the device.  I hit apply / prepare / check out, whatever - nothing seems to do it.
So far I'm just playing with it to get my head around how it all works, so the only apps I've been trying this with are free ones (e.g. Adobe Reader / Chrome).
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

FYI - I figured it out.  All you have to do is highlight the app you want removed and then go up to edit and delete from there.

  • Do I have to run Apps in b/round? - How to "Close an App" quickly?

    1. Is there any way to "toggle off" background Apps? I have no need to keep newspapers, books, games, etc running in the back only to have to "Double tap the home button, hold the icon till it wiggles, tap the negative sign, close the bottom panel" - useless wate of time.
    2. If no, any shorter way to close an app other than the method described above?
How about just flick up on the Home screen to get to the running apps bar (what do you call that bar anyway?) instead of having to click the home button twice?
(You wouldn't believe how much noise that stupid button makes when it clicks when your partner is sleeping and you are reading in bed!)
    3. At the very least can't Apple just make the background Apps already have the little negative sign on them when they come up (like the close program "x" PC programs now have)? It would at least save the "hold till it wiggles step".
    4. Don't even get me started on the Mute button that only mutes system sounds (which I have turned off anyway) yet makes be do a whole bunch of steps to be able to screen lock! Can you say "user selectable function"?

And unnecessary. Maybe once/week you would want to enter the multitasking tray just in case you have a thousand or so apps in the background.

Again, there's no reason to close an app.

I have to repeat that there's no reason to close an app.

I don't have the time to give all the reasons why that would be undesirable.
+4. Don't even get me started on the Mute button that only mutes system sounds (which I have turned off anyway) yet makes be do a whole bunch of steps to be able to screen lock! Can you say "user selectable function"?+
Don't get me started regarding an issue where Apple did exactly what I had hoped they would do.

  • Double-tapping to switch between or clear running apps is not working with iPhone 4s.

when I double tap to close out or switch between running functions, it does nothing ever since yesterday. I have the most current update since last week and the home button works for all other purposes so it's not broken. Now my battery is draining because I cannot shut off running apps. Please help!

    Hi Kate,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into a multitasking issue that’s preventing you from switching between apps or forcing them to quit. Try restarting your iPhone, as shown in the article linked below.
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If that doesn’t do it, you can always try restoring the iPhone to factory settings too.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
    Cheers,
    -Jason

  • After the update I don't know how to close running apps? I recall double clicking the main button then hold one app until they begin a jiggling motion. But that no longer works.

    How do close running apps?

You still double tap the home button and the apps are lined up across the screen. Swipe up on the app preview thumbnail - drag it up off of the screen - and that will close the app.

  • Can I partion my drive on macbook pro 10.5.8 to add snow leopard and not affect my leopard?  I'd like to run apps on snow leopard which cannot be run on leopard.

I'd like to add snow leopard to my macbook pro which runs leopard 10.5.8 in order to run apps.  I do not want to mess with my original system and risk losing data.  Is that possible by just going to utilities and partioniong my drive?

15 is probably enough.  And if you kept your home dir in a separate volume then you could use your same home dir on both leopard and snow leopard.  This is one of the reasons I recommend keeping the home dir on a separate volume.  Very convenient for switching OS's or needing to use a (backup) copy of the current OS.

  • Is there a way to "Quit" all running apps in dock at the same time verses right-clicking each one individually?

Is there a way to "Quit" all running apps in dock at the same time verses right-clicking each one individually?

IIRC, OPTION-click on the Apple icon on the menu bar and select either Restart or Shutdown. Alternatively,
    Control-Command-Eject
Quit all applications (after giving you a chance to save changes to open documents), then restart the computer
    Control Option-Command-Eject
Quit all applications (after giving you a chance to save changes to open documents), then shut down the computer
