Running executable JARs from Windows

Hi!
I have this executable JAR file with no problems for running it from the Windows console using the "java -jar jarfile" command. But if I double click the same JAR file in Windows explorer I get a "Main class not found" error. Does anyone know what's happening here ?
Thanks in advance

I think the following varies somewhat depending on which Windows you are using. On Win 2000 in a Windows folder, select Tools menu, Folder Options and select File Types. Then select JAR and click on Advanced. Under Actions, there select "open" and click on Edit. For the Application, you should see something like "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "%1" %*

  • Running executable jar from within a java program

    Is there a way to launch an executable jar in a java program? I tried wrapping the jar in an exe and calling it using Runtime exec() and though this approach works it does only for windows. I want it to work for unix/linux too.

    Yes, but it's a sub process.Nope.
    Hence the calling process doesn't quit unless the called one returns.Wrong.
    My calling program is actually a jar and what Im trying to do is delete the jar after it's done running. But the above method (of launching a separate jar doing the deletion) doesn't seem to work for the above mentioned reason.Wrong.
    If you could tell me any other way it would really be a big help.You don't need any other way. Maybe you need to allow some time for the calling program to wind up. 20 seconds may be overkill, but I'm not in the mood to find how short it can be and still succeed.
    The two classes are packaged in separate jars.import java.io.IOException;
    public class Deletee {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
          try {
             String[] cmds = {"java", "-jar", "E:/temp/Deleter.jar"};
             Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmds);
             System.exit(0);
          } catch (IOException ex) {
             ex.printStackTrace();
    import java.io.File;
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class Deleter {
       public static void main(String[] args) {
          File file = new File("E:/temp/Deletee.jar");
          try {
             Thread.sleep(20000);
          } catch (InterruptedException ex) {
             ex.printStackTrace();
          if (file.delete()) {
             JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Deleted");
          } else {
             JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Oops");
    }Try it and see for yourself.

  • Creating executable JAR from JDeveloper 11

    Hello
    Iv'e been using JDeveloper for developing my Java desktop app. It includes my classes and some additional external jar's. From within JDeveloper everything works fine, but now I want to deliver my app as a single JAR file (including the external jars).
    I searched and searched and couldn't find such an option. I tried creating deployment profiles and deploy my app but the resulting JAR was very small, did not include the utility jars and did not run in double clicking.
    I tried both Eclipse and NetBeans and they produced nice running executable jars of the sane application with only a few clicks. However, Im used to JDeveloper and would rather continue working with it. Is there a way to create a complete executable jar from JDeveloper (or maybe a plugin) ?
    If not than how do I do it manually so I can write my own generator ? (I know the basics, but how do I include the library jars ?)
    Thanks
    Guy Shilo

    Hi
    If you to want include external jars, don't keep those inside src folder but outside to that folder. Then only framework consider this as resources and will be packed while deploying. You can ensure it by creating a simple file using wizard. It will be displayed in application navigator under the folder 'Resources'

  • Running My Program From Windows?

    Hi, now that I'm done with my program, is there any
    way that I can run the program from windows by
    creating a shortcut? I would like the program to run
    on other machines without having to start or install
    the JDK.First, the other machines do not need the JDK - they need the JRE which is much smaller. Second, your question is a variant of the most asked question on this forum. Try searching for "exe" or "executable" or something similar and you will find lots of answers.
    Quickly I can tell you that if your program use any GUI (ie AWT/Swing), there is no way you can avoid having the JRE on the target machines. You can, however, make installation programs that install the JRE along with you program if you wish.

  • Executing jar from java code, then kill parent java code

    Please suggest if there is any best way around on executing jar from java code then killing parent java code.
    a) I have desktop based java application say "Monitor.java" which runs every 5 minutes.
    b) How can I START external java application say "execute.jar" from Monitor.java THEN EXIT Monitor.java
    I tried various options using "ProcessBuilder" and calling bat file but I need Monitor (parent application to EXIT, immediately after calling child (execute.jar)
    Try1) ProcessBuilder builder = new ProcessBuilder("java -jar execute.jar");
    Process process = builder.start();
    Try2) Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process p = null;
    p = r.exec(new String[] { "cmd", "/c", "start C:/temp/Test.bat" });

    I have a requirement to transfer data from one db to another db from Java Application Layer.Maybe, maye not. We get all sorts of weird "requirements" - which are nothing but thoughts or proposed solutions.
    But,
    Did the "requirement" mention whether the table existed already or not in the target database? - If not, did it tell you to create it - drop/create it?
    Did the "requirement" deliver some explanation to why this copying was neeeded? - Are we talking replication? - Or a one time cloning?
    Etc, etc,
    Personally I would always argue against a "reuirement" like that. - It just isn't the way to do it. Period.
    Regards
    Peter
    P.S: If you are satisfied with what COPY does, then you could let Java make an OS call and do it from there?

  • Running a jar from the command line

    I am trying to run a Jar from the command line. I have a number of classes in a package called "trainnn".
    I put all the classes into a jar
    jar cvf name.jar trainnn\*.classI then creat a file called mainClass.txt with the line (with a blank return line after it, where QueryMatch has the main). This file was placed in the same directory as the package and the jar file
    Main-Class: QueryMatch
    then
    jar cmf mainClass.txt network.jar G:/TrainNN/src/trainnn/QueryMatch.classthis worked fine.....but it is from here I have problems when I try run the jar
    java -jar network.jarbut get this error.
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: QueryMatch
    I cant figure out this error, I have tried specifying the exact path in the mainClass.txt file but that didnt work.
    Any ideas
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    To start a java app in the command line with "java -jar yourJarFile.jar", the jar needs to have a mainfest file "MANIFEST.MF" in a folder called "META-INF". The manifest file would have to contain the name of your starting class, e.g. it could look like thisManifest-Version: 1.0
    Main-Class: com.yourCompany.yourProject.YourClass Hope that helps. Cheers, HJK

  • Run a jar on Windows without the command window

    I would like to run a jar and close the command window after starting up. Is this possible please.

    I would like to run a jar and close the command window after starting up. Is this possible please.why do you want to do that? jar files are executable files so when you double click it, it will execute without having to run it from the command prompt. So, you don't have to even open the cmd prompt to run .jar files.

  • How to run executable jar on client machine remotely?

    Hi,
    I have developed PHP web application that uses Java in the background. The problem that I want to solve is to start Java application (executable jar) on client machine.
    Is there any idea how to solve this problem?
    Zoran

    found it:
    in the Group Policy Management Editor go to Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > Logon > Run these programs at user logon, and add the path (on the local computer) to the script to be run when any user logs
    in.  Powershell scripts need to be called from a .vbs script like this in order to prevent window popup:
    Dim objShell
    Dim cmd
    Set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
    cmd = "C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -nologo -noProfile -NonInteractive -ExecutionPolicy bypass -File c:\mypowershellscript.ps1"
    objShell.Run cmd,0
    As for distributing the scripts, that's a work in progress... GPP?

  • Executing JAR Files Windows 98 and XP

    Hey can someone please help me.
    I made an executable jar file the extract contents of a jar file. In windows XP it runs fine, however in Widnows 98 it does not, has anyone come across this problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Well When I try, On a windows XP machine it shows the progress bar I made, and extracts all the files to the c drive. On Windows 98 It shows the progress bar but will not extract the files to the c: drive folder.
    The program simply gets all the files that are within the jar file, and puts their names in a Vector, then takes the names from the Vector and Extrats the ones that need to be extracted.
    Any other Ideas, I know this sounds very wacky thats why I am in need of help.
    Thanks for the ideas.
