Running out of disc space

Despite a 80GB external drive to which I moved all my photos
and despite emptying my trash and everything else I considered dispensible I am still getting a message that my START UP DISC IS ALMOST FULL. Current capacity is 750 MG. Any suggestions?

Scoobie:
I'm glad that you found some additional space. I'd recommend that you run OnyX to do regular system maintenance and cleaning on the Mac. The PS scratch disk relocation should help keep the startup drive from overloading while you're working on Photoshop files. Both of the above should bring back some "pep" to the Mac.
I still don't know what's taking up 17GB or so on the startup drive, but running on a full drive is not a good thing. If you launch Activity Monitor (from the Utilities folder) and view the System Memory section, you'll get an idea of how much of the drive the OS wants for virtual memory (which is variable, depending on what programs are running). The point is, when the drive becomes full, fragmentation sets in, the OS doesn't have enough breathing room, the system slows down, and the risk of problems increases.
If the externals are 120GB or smaller drives, you might consider pulling one of them from it's enclosure and using it internally as the startup drive if the boss won't split for a new drive. If the Mac can boot from the external drive (via FW), you might also run the OS from there, albeit it will run more slowly than if run from an internal drive. The optimum answer, however, is to get the boss to agree that a small investment in a larger drive is a wise thing to do, particularly when weighed against the probablility of having time-consuming downtime problems with the Mac, which may cost more in the long run.
Good luck!

    If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

  • Running out of disc space on my 160GB drive!

    Yesterday I got a prompt telling me that I was running out of drive space. I checked, and yes, I was running out. I then tried to find out what was using my hard drive space. My Documents used about 20GB, Windows about 20GB and Program files about 20GB. Properties on the 160GB drive says I am using 132GB, but I can account for about 60GB, no more. What is using the remaining hard drive space, and how do I get it back?

    I'm having the same exact problem with my T61p. It says I have 72.8 gb free of 142. I've loaded no more than 5 programs onto the computer, and my iTunes are kept on an external drive.
    Where has all my space gone? Does it have something to do with system restore or backups? I didn't set up any such thing, does the laptop do it on its own?
    I don't understand why this is happening to my laptop considering my 6-year-old desktop STILL has about 140 gb free out of 160...

  • I've run out of disc space for iPhoto

    What are my options?

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    You don't specify if you are referring to the iPhoto app or to the iPhoto library. If you are referring to the iPhoto library, you can delete files you don't need, or you can move the iPhoto library to an external drive, so you will be able to use iPhoto without space problems.
    If you are referring to the iPhoto app, you have to delete files that you don't need from the hard drive, or move files that you need to an external drive in order to make free space

    Hi @cosmogirl813 ,
    Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and Error: Low Disk Space. Here is a document on help with the error.
    Do not store your files on the Recovery drive. The only files on the Recovery drive should be related to a system recovery.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error message-the volume unkown is about to run out of disk space.

    When I try to log and transfer any of my video clips from my camera it doesn't work, because in the middle of the transfer it comes up with a message saying volume unknown is about to run out of disk space, please clear some space and hit continue...This shouldn't be, because I have more than enough room on my mac. So I'm wondering what, if anything do I need to delete. And what else I have to do so I can get back to successfully transfering my clips. Thanks alot!

    Are you capturing to the internal boot/system drive of your computer?
    Also, how much remaining free space do you have on the drive you have set as the media or scratch disc?

    I am trying to edit my music list and then sync it to my iPhone 5 so I don't run out of storage space. However, I see the check marks on the iTunes library but am unable to uncheck them? How do I manually edit what will be synced to my phone? (the check marks are not bolded, does this mean they are not in my library but only on my phone?)

    You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
    Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone.

    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

    I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
    When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

    About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
    Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
    So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
    Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
    Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

  • Running out of disk space in c drive

    Hi,
    i'm new to OBIEE, i installed obiee 10.1.3.4 on my computer , i'm doing practice on sample sales. every day i could see message running out of disk space, daily i'm purging cache entries and deleting sessions in UI, and also deleting temp files in oracle BI data, but still i'm facing this problem.
    could anyone give me more ideas.
    Your valuable suggestions are appreciated.

    iTunes prefs - Advanced.
    Set the *iTunes media folder location* to the external drive.
    Make sure *Keep iTunes media folder organized* and *Copy files to iTunes media folder ...* are both checked.
    Then go to iTunes menu File > Library > Organize library - Consolidate.
    This will copy everything in iTunes to the new location.
    After it is complete, quit iTunes then delete \Music\iTunes\iTunes media\ folder.

    slaglejrp,
    perhaps it would be less expensive to just install a new disk with a larger capacity on your current MacBook Pro, rather than plan on buying a new Mac with a larger disk? Once your current disk has been cloned to the new disk, and the new disk has been installed into your MacBook Pro, that would allow you to keep Photoshop 5 on your current MacBook Pro.

  • Running out of harddrive space - here's a fix.

    Twice now I've run out of harddrive space on my t500 with a 160GB harddrive installed. The first time I called the IBM support people who were as useful as a chocolate teapot.
    This time I turned to the Microsoft forums and finally got it figured out. I don't know if this will get to IBM's tech guys, but perhaps they may want to look into it for their build.
    Vista uses an amount of the drive for Restore points and shadow copies of files. Typically this amount is limited to 15% of the drive space. On my copy of Vista, the setting was UNBOUNDED, which is why it gobbled up the entire harddrive.
    In XP, this setting was controlled by a UI, in Vista, MS took a huge step forward and implemented a command-line utility to ocntrol this setting. (/sarcasm).
    These are the commands to list and set the amount of storage consumed by Vista for restore points and Shadow copies.
    vssadmin List ShadowStorage
    vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /on=C: /For=C: /MaxSize=5GB
    Note that I set mine to 5GB which is substantially less than the default 15% of the harddrive. If you use this, use your own discretion.
    The question of course is why I received a system with this set as follows:
    C:\Users\Mike>vssadmin List ShadowStorage
    vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
    (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.
    Shadow Copy Storage association
    For volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a589e9af-cf02-19dd-bec8-001c259b5bc3}\
    Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a589e9af-cf02-19dd-bec8-001c259b5b
    c3}\
    Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 6.656 GB
    Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 9.108 GB
    Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED
      Not that I expect IBM will 'fess up, but what the hey.
    Edit: My apologies for the random smilies, I couldn't find an option to turn of interpreting some character sequences as smilies.

  • How to set the limit for the warning 'running out of disk space'

    I am wondering if there's a way to set the number of GB before I get the system warning 'running out of disk space'.
    I saw this question asked in 2010 and it did not get an answer. It was archived so I am asking again. I know how to monitor the available space on my startup disk, and how to empty the trash to clear up disk space. I am looking for an OS X setting that I can change.

    My guess is that you want to lower the limit. IMHO I think the limit is alreay too low.
    If you are seeing this warning regularly then your disk is severely overfull and needs to be replaced with a larger one.
    Running the free space low eenough to get the warning greatly increases the chances for disk corruption. Once the disk gets corrupted then then next thing that happens is data lose.
    You have a serious problem with your Mac that should be dealt with immediately.
    Backing your data up would also be a good idea if you are not already doing that.

  • Running out of disk space - IGS Log Trace

    Hello,
    for a few weeks we are continuously running out of disk space on our CE7.2 Application Server.
    The following files are increasing every second:
    Path: usr\sap\C72\J00\igs\log
    mux_sapce72.trc
    pw_sapce72_0.trc
    pw_sapce72_1.trc
    The entry that is written into these files per second is always similar to this one:
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] After NiSelSelect, ret=-5
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] timeout --> continue
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] Before NiSelSelect
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] After NiSelSelect, ret=-5
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] timeout --> continue
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] Before NiSelSelect
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] After NiSelSelect, ret=-5
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] timeout --> continue
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] Before NiSelSelect
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] After NiSelSelect, ret=-5
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] timeout --> continue
    [ServerTcpIp::NiServerloop] Before NiSelSelect
    Does anybody know what's the reason for this is and how to solve it?
    Thanks in advance!
