Running SQL*Plus

Hello:
I installed Oracle8i on WINNT 4 workstation standalone, that is I am not connected to any server in any way. When I log on to use SQL*Plus I enter internal as username and oracle as password. Host string is left blank since I am not connected to any database. I create table without any syntax errors. But Tables are not being created. I kept getting errors that Oracel is not available: Error 00134. Now, is this because I dont have a host string as requyired by log on window? If I install the default Oracle database that came with CD rom, what will my host string be?
I need to use SQL*Plus for Oracle class I am taking. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks. Tunji

There are lots of steps in installign the Oracle..and they are operating system dependent.
This kind of problem is very commen and has lots of Answers here is what I think you should start working on first...
Step 1. Check whether you have network card and Network adapter software installed.
Step 2. If installed then give your machine come TCP/IP address and configure the SQL*Net
using the Net confiiguration wizard
Step 3. If you don't have network card installed then probably you won't be able to configure it for SQL*Net what you can try is configuring the ODBC. You can install it if one is not installed.
This is just the the preface of configuring the SQL*Net the network software which oracle uses, the detail you can find in the CD under the topic of configuring SQL*Net.
I hope you find the solution. Talk to your instructors for that.
Good Luck

  • Problem running SQL PLUS in Oracle 8i and 9i on Windows XP

I've tried installing both Oracle 8.17 Personal Edition and also 9i in Windows XP Professional (each on a different occassion). I have run into the same problem each time. The installation itself goes fine in both cases, but when I run SQL PLUS, the Log On screen appears for 1-2 seconds then whole thing just closes automatically, so I can't ever access that application which is the only thing I need to work with. Any ideas on what's going wrong? Thanks.

    Patrick,
Well a few things. Did you try TNSPING to see if the listener is up? If it's ok, can you connect with FREE toad? Download Oracle OEM and install that (the SQL net and sql plus portions). If you can't get tnsping to work, sqlplus isn't going too either. I don't know why the sqplus is actually shutting down, but I'm guessing the TNS NAMES entry isnt there (in the tnsnames.ora file). If the tnsnames entry is there then tnsping should work. Get tnsping to work first.
    Tyler.

  • UserId/Password Not Given-expected to run SQL Plus

So that we may better diagnose DOWNLOAD problems, please provide the following information.
I downloaded Oracle 9i and I'm trying to run SQL Plus and its asking me for a userid, password and a host string. I don't know what the userid, password or host string would be. I wanted to see how I like Oracle for a database and just wanted to enter some SQL.
How will I know what the userid, password, host string would be?
    - Server name = none
    - Filename = none
    - Date/Time 2/8/02
    - Browser + Version = Internet Explorer
    - O/S + Version = Windows 20000
    - Error Msg = invalid userid/password

could you please suggest what could be the reasonYou are running Oracle on an unsupported operating system (Vista Home premium). You either need to change the OS or use the package meant for Windows Vista.

  • Is it possible to run SQL*Plus with Putty?

    Hello everybody,
I've just installed Oracle 11g on Windows Vista. When I click on SQL*Plus it opens the program in the default windows command line. I don't really like the look and feel of cmd. I would like to know whether it is possible to run SQL*Plus in a more advanced/user friendly environment such as Putty terminal client.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Running SQL*Plus in WEB-Forms

    Hi,
I have a problem to run an existing SQL-script in a web environment. The forms application running in a client server environment calls a sqlplus script via HOST-command.
The SQL-Script itself asks the user to enter several values (ACCEPT-command).
Now the forms application has to be migrated to WEB-Forms (Forms6i). If I still use the HOST-statement, SQL*Plus will be started on the application server. The user has no chance to enter any input value.
So the idea was to use iSQL*Plus. But iSQL*Plus has some restrictions, which are preventing to run the existing scripts.
    - SPOOL is not supported anymore (SP2-0850: Command "spool" is not available in iSQL*Plus)
    - ACCEPT is not supported anymore (SP2-0850: Command "accept" is not available in iSQL*Plus)
Has anybody an idea for surrounding this problem?
    My boundary conditions are
    - running different SQL scripts which are using ACCEPT to ask the user to enter values
    (workarounds for ACCEPT are possible!)
    - spooling the result set to the file system for further processing
    Thanks in advance
    Detlef Kuhfahl

    Hi Kevin,
The SQL-scripts are not trivial. They make a select to give the user a choice of the available values.
Sure I can build a form to serve these requirements, but the customer writes these scripts by itself. He is not able to make a new forms application for every SQL-Script.
So he wants to keep the "old" technology. SQL*Plus is much more flexible then forms can be, compared to the effort you have to do.
We need a solution with iSQL*Plus or SQL*Plus

  • How I can run SQL*PLUS?

On my notebook is instaled Oracle Client and Oracle SQL Developer. It is working correctly. I can connect to the Oracle DB on the Unix server so that my tnsnames.ora is correctly. But I don't know, how I can start SQL*PLUS on my client machine.
    Thanks in Advance :)

    hello
did you mean to connect only to SQL * or to connect as sysdba?
if your anwser is to connect only as normal user, then follow the above
but in case you are looking to connect to the database server (Linux) from your laptop you have to connect to the server firest as root or the db user,
then you can access oracle sql plus using terminal such as PUTTY (search in google it's free) look at this:
    [applprod@applprod 9.2.0]$ pwd
    /d01/oracle/proddb/9.2.0
    [applprod@applprod 9.2.0]$ sqlplus

    Now what do you think?

  • Connection error when running sql*plus from within a Makefile

As part of our build process the commands to install/update our database schema are executed from a Makefile (along with all the other build/test commands). We've been running our build under several system configurations, but have hit a hitch with one specific one. So far this has worked with Windows XP (cygwin) against a Express Edition DB and Red Hat ES 5 against Oracle 11g.
I am now trying to get the build running on a Ubuntu 8.04 workstation with the Oracle Express Edition installed. From the command line I can execute a simple command line such:
echo "SELECT 5 as foo from dual"|sqlplus user/password
Now if I put the same command in a Makefile, I receive the following error message:
    ERROR:
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27123: unable to attach to shared memory segment
    Linux Error: 22: Invalid argument
    Additional information: 1
    Additional information: 32769
This error seems to pop up a lot when a client is not properly configured (atleast the googling I've done has said as much), but my client is clearly working as I can connect outside of the Makefile. Is there possible some info that gets lost when make executes the process? Any ideas of what I could do to fix this?

see 115753.1 note on metalink , it clearly explains why you are encountering this .

  • Running a SQL*Plus command from Java

I have a requirement to run SQL* Plus commands from Java. The results as they would appear in SQL*Plus window or spool file should be captured and stored in a table.
    For example,
    SQL> select * from dual;
    D
    X
    1 row selected;
    SQL>
All the lines above should be stored for later use.
    Could any one give pointers?

  • Need help in sql plus

i install in my computer the oracle9i
my problem is that : i can login to sql plus
althoge i was tring all the passwords that i know
    scott/tiger
    sys/change_on_install
system/manager and the result is allways the same
    ora-12560 error
how can i solve that problem?
did i missed somthing during the installation?

    Thank you to EVERYONE!!
I have been searching every possible forum to find out how to install/run SQL *Plus on a home computer without a server/network to work within.  As most just learning, I could not figure out how to get past the SQL Plus Username/Password/Host String logon.
After much trial and error, I got through and I hope this helps a lot of people just starting out.
I used 'SYSTEM' as my username and my password created on install.
When installing I created a database and fixed the password so my default password was the password I created on install.
As long as I had those two fields filled in, I could leave the Host String blank and I could still get into the SQL Plus workspace.
Since I also created a database on install, I found that I could also use the name I gave the installed database (I didn't leave the default database name so I do not remember what the default name was, but I think the default password was 'manager' for those who were not tempted to change it).
Worst case scenario if you forgot your database name given during install, you can do a search for all of your .ora files (usually in the drive you installed Oracle on). Open the tnsnames.ora file in Notepad and you can see which database names are available on your system. The path to my file was:
    D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
You want the SERVICE_NAME = 'databasename'
I hope this reduced someone's stress...and thanks for all the helpful hints on these threads...they led me to the final outcome!!
In the end, I tried a lot of other combinations for the username/host strings with plenty of errors. You would think this information would be on page one of every Oracle install!! Or maybe it is and I am just a bit slow. : )
Thanks again to all that posted with this initial question (years ago)...

  • Problem entering password sql plus in wnidows vista

    hello,
after i successful installation in windows vista, i try run SQL Plus
when i try running SQL PLUS, i have to entered my username and password.
Entering my username is no problem. but when i try entering password, i cannot entering input password because no matter what i do, my password does not appear on the screen SQL Plus
    Is something wrong about installation?
    Please help me.

Well, that is why it is called password. You do not want anyone to see it while you are typing, right? Just type in the password (you should see * for each typed password character) and hit enter. And if you are running non-gui version of SQL*Plus (in command window) you will not see any characters (even *) while typing password.

  • Oracle 9i Lite/Sql Plus Installation Instructions?

I am having the same problem with install Oracle 9i Lite. Really I need to get SQL PLUS up and running. I am installing it in Windows 98 and would like to use it on a stand alone pc/home pc.
I ended up just installing sql plus without net8 and other mobile server components because I don't know what the port name and hostname is. I am just trying to get sql plus to work.
After just installing sql plus, I get the same login username/password/host string. I think you can log in as SYSDBA or SYSOPER but what is the password and host string. I am not running sql plus from a server/internet I would like it to be stand alone. I know the host string has something to do with what type connection is being used but I don't have any (other than aol dial up connection) so I would just like to run sql on a stand alone pc!!! HELP!!
    Dionne

Did your SQL*Plus install include create a database to connect to? I think a quick thing to check would be:
Do you have a valid tnsnames.ora in $ORACLE_HOME\network\admin
(address = is on one line)
    ie:
    orcl =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = orcl.localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl.localhost)
Where orcl is the name of the database you want to connect
to and local host is your machine. (Check Network configuration). If you are on a network you will replace with orcl.mynet.com
I think for a standalone SQL install they might expect you are on a NetWork and have a database to connect to. Maybe
you should download the whole install for standalone use...
9i and 8.1.7 are available for download. (8.1.7 is a little smaller and doesn't require as much memory depending on your home system)
I'm not even sure what you are trying to do. Please post more details if this doesn't help.

  • Problem logging in sql plus

If you are running Personal Oracle, you do not need to give host
string to log in SQL Plus. However, database should be started
    up first.
In order to run SQL Plus on a client workstation in client-
server environment, you should create a host string using Net
Easy Configuration. If you have created 'ORACLE' as the host
string, it is OK. You will also have to start a listener.

sorry I was trying to reply to a post I read and had this
