Safari 5.1.7 Beach Balls when displaying HTML5 video
Hello all,
I'm coming to you guys with an extremely annoying bug in Safari 5.1.7 (it's been fixed in 6.0, but Apple won't update Snow Leopard machines to the new version).
I have an HTML5 video at http://safaba.clients.numonium.com that is supposed to play above the homepage slideshow when you click the play button in the first slide (the slideshow fades out, video player fades in).
This aforementioned works properly in the following browsers:
Firefox (current version - 16.0.1)
Chrome (current version - 22.0.1229.94)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9
Microsoft Internet Exploer 8 (uses SWF fall-back, but properly transitions to the video and plays the SWF)
Safari (current version - 6.0)
Safari for iOS, iPhone
Safari for iOS, iPad (you have to hit the "play" button twice to get it to play... another issue)
You can use the following credentials to access this site:
http://safaba.clients.numonium.com
User: apple
Pass: FQscoPxhx!
Safari 5.1.7, however, completely goes unresponsive under some circumstances, inconsistently:
When you click the "play" button on the first slide to launch the video player
If the above works, the video might play for two seconds then go unresponsive
If the above works, the video might play until you seek
If the above works, the video might play until you send a scroll event
The browser sometimes (albeit rarely) plays the video flawlessly, but only once completely loaded. If the video does, in fact, play properly, clearing the cache would revive the aforementioned issues. Therefore, I think this bug has to do in how Safari loads the video upon page load.
I've done just about everything I can think of (if I go to the video directly - http://safaba.clients.numonium.com/images/videos/homepage-slideshow/homepage-sli deshow.mp4), the video will play after a few seconds of loading.
So I would greatfully appreciate any and all help anyone can offer - thanks!
I should also mention that when Safari beach-balls, I don't see CPU, bandwidth, or Disk I/O spike (in fact, they're all close to 0), and only about 50% of the computer's RAM is used.
Thanks again!

Really long spinning beach balls when trying a video chat
I just migrated from an older Mac to a brand new Mac Pro 2.66. I plugged in my iSight and tried to do a video conference, only to get a spinning beach ball for >1 minute before the video chat commenced.
Later I tried to access my own camera (by clicking on the camera button at the top of my buddy list) and likewise, >1 minute of spinning beach ball, THEN it worked OK.
Going to the Preferences > Video tab, likewise, spinning beach ball.
Any ideas on how to diagnose and fix this?
Already repaired permissions, and tried unplugging/replugging the iSight.Hi David,
In iChat > Preferences > Video section you should have a drop down to Pick the camera (either Internal or External).
Have you done this ?
By default iChat will use the Firewire one as first choice (to the extent of changing mid chat if connected.

Also make sure to check your system with Disk Utility (click verify disk) and see if you're dealing with any directory damage. Typically crashes like that are symptoms of directory damage or other corruption.
If you have some, you'll want to boot off your install disk (holding C down), and then go under the utilities menu--> disk utility, select your drive, and choose Repair Disk.
Alternatively you could restart your computer with the Command, S keys down until the text stops scrolling and then type:
fsck -fy
Once it finishes you can see if it's able to repair the corruption or not. If it is, great. Consider downloading and installing the 10.6.8 combo updater from:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
If it doesn't repair the errors, you can get a copy of Disk Warrior to help repair the corruption, or even better back up your stuff, erase the drive, and then restore your stuff. -
Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.
You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down. -

Spinning Beach Ball when turning off Airport WiFi. SL Issues, many! Help!
I performed a clean installation of Snow Leopard on my new 13 inch late 2009 MBP on release date. All of a sudden, I am getting the infamous spinning beach ball when attempting to disable my Airport wifi. It's so bad, that I am not able to gracefully restart my system. Seriously this is getting out of hand. Snow Leopard was supposed to make Leopard even more stable.
Steps I have taken, not in any particular order.
Verified and repaired permissions.
Ran HW test, no issues found
Reset PRAM
Deleted wifi related plist files from /lib/prefs/sysconfig and rebooted;
The only thing I can think of next is to perform and Archive and Install or....
...As much as I would hate to go back, Install Leopard.
I would appreciate feedback or suggestions as what to do. Looks like 10.6.1 may be worth waiting for. Oh how I miss Tiger.HI,
If you use an Airport Base Station or Airport Express, try resetting.
If that doesn't help...
Boot from the 10.6 disk and verify the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
Check available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
If necessary, do an Archive an Install. It's the only install option available for Snow Leopard.

I get the spinning beach ball when I open preview, it wont go away, can i somehow stop the process its trying to do?
You can quit Preview by selecting it in Activity Monitor and then clicking on the red octagon 'Quit Process'. That does not solve the issue of the beach ball' as such. Perhaps. a reinstall of the OS might sole the problem. That is simply a guess on my part.

Why do I get the spinning beach ball when I try to change from Events to Photos. How do I fix it?
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Spinny beach ball when i try to import an aiff file (6mins) into idvd 6.0.3
im reading the posts about audio encoding problems with idvd and
i get spinny beach ball when i try to import an aiff file (6mins) into idvd 6.0.3
right after i click the import button. wondering if this is a part of that problem. im not at the encoding phase. actually im trying to make the simplest dvd in the world. 1 picture and 1 song on the main menu-thats it. i have it set to "best quality" so it doesnt encode in the background-so says the idvd help menu. when i click import or drag the song file into the window (tried it many ways) i get infinite spinny beach ball. dont know if im waiting long enough before i force-quit, about 10 mins. didnt think this would be too hard for the machine to do considering im not burning yet, i just opened the program and this is the first thing i tried to do. any help??? i have a intel mini 1.66 with 2 gb ram, 10 gb free on hd, OS 10.4.9, and using a 23gb imovie file for the video. i didnt try plist deleting or reinstall yet because this is the only problem ive had. repaired permissions, checked the drive with disk utility. ran software update, nothing. nada. HELP!!!i figured it out last night. idvd doesnt like .aiff's on my machine, maybe because its an intel. i converted it to apple lossless and it worked fine, it imported instantly. .mp3 and .m4a fine as well. i dont know why it wont import an .aiff, maybe because its an intel??? dont know. everyu time i try any aiff file on my machine, idvd does the spinny beachball forever. i even tried to reinstall idvd and that didnt work either, so i gave up and converted it to lossless.
to clarify, im just trying to make a simple dvd with my imovie footage, a main menu picture and 1 song to play on the main menu. i wanted to use the .aiff instead converting it to .mp3 because i didnt want to lose any quality. i guess apple lossless is good enough... whatever, just glad it works now. maybe ill be able to burn the dvd sometime this month, and im ready for the problems that will come when i try to do that. from what i hear i have to pack a lunch. everyone is saying ill have to mow my lawn by the time its done. that *** and not looking forward to that. -
IPhoto hangs/freezes/beach balls when printing TIFF: solved
I was having a problem today with iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17) on Mac OS X 10.9.3: iPhoto is freezing/hanging/beach balling when printing TIFF images. I can effortlessly re-create the problem by selecting a specific TIFF image (from a Nikon D700) and attempting to print to my HP LaserJet m451dw (over the network).
The problem occured on the iPhoto print screen. I was able to select 1 or more images to print and then select the print size (e.g. full, contact sheet, etc...) however when I click the Print button at the bottom of the screen iPhoto would hang. Normally the printer dialog would appear.
I am using the latest Mac OS X 10.9 drivers from HP (Jan 2014) and printing from other apps such as Word worked.
I had tried the following with no luck: completely rebuilding the iPhoto DB; removing and reinstalling the printer; removing the iPhoto preferences.
The solution in the end was to rotate the TIFF image. The wife had rotated a number of images to portrait mode for a contact sheet but could not print. After mucking about with the problem TIFF image I rotated it around back to landscape and it is now working.
I hope this helps someone else experiencing the same problem.Terence Devlin wrote:
The reason I asked about the format of the disk is that folks report issues with Libraries stored on disks that are not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Terence could you tell me more? I have not found the corresponding post.
I have a huge (10K photos, 50GB) library on a RAID server under linux formatted as ext 2.
I am not a designer playing with fonts.
After I upgraded to iPhoto '09 from the DVD, it converted my library and I started to look at the animation which crashed in the middle (face recognition was running in the background).
Any attempt to restart iPhoto failed (empty window with spinning wheel).
Then I downloaded the last version of iPhoto.
I restarted from a clean copy of the iPhoto library.=>Same failure.
I try to rebuild everything (except the database which was not an option).=> same failre
I copied a smaller iphoto library on the local hard disc => it works. -
[Solved] dwb can't display HTML5 videos
Hello,
I have discovered dwb, which really interests me as a lightweight alternative to massive browsers such as Chromium. However, I don't use Flash (bleeehhhh), and I've discovered that I could not display HTML5 videos (only with dwb, that is, because Chromium does fine).
As an example, the Vimeo player (which is HTML5-based) displays this message: "Major bummer. The video can't be played with your current setup". I must add that I use dwb-git, and according to the wiki's instructions, I ran this when I noticed the bug:
sudo pacman -S --needed gstreamer0.10 gstreamer0.10-bad gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins gstreamer0.10-base gstreamer0.10-base-plugins gstreamer0.10-good gstreamer0.10-good-plugins gstreamer0.10-ugly gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
Here are the user-agent strings compared. The main difference is the lack of image/webp acceptance in dwb.

I have searched dwb's website, which mentions the use of youtube-dl via an userscript. If I'm not able to fix this, I'll use the script, but in-browser videos would be more comfortable. I stumbled upon this bug report, so my hopes aren't that high ... Could you help me sort this out ?
Thanks in advance for your answers

The mods can merge it into the dwb thread. You're more likely to get a response from the person who developed it in the dwb thread.
MatthR3D wrote:karol: I tried. I can't play this. I installed gst-libav, recompiled dwb-git and gave it another shot, but I'm still not able to play the video.
It's flash, as already stated in the dwb thread just recently. I will install this gst-libav to see what I get.

Spinning beach ball when quitting Logic and loading projects
Hello,
Whenever I load a Logic project I get the spinning beach ball. After a while, the project is loaded and it all works, but it is taken way too long to load the plugins. I'm not even talking about big projects, and I have an SSD, so it should be much faster.
The same happens when I quit Logic. Not when I close the project, but when I actually quit Logic. The "Logic Pro" menu in the top left corner of the menu bar in OS X would light up in dark blue when I press CMD + Q, and it would stay like this for 30 seconds or so. The spinning beach ball would appear again during this time. Then it would finally quit.
I have reinstalled OS X and reinstalled Logic Pro X. But the problem was still there. It sounds like a core audio problem, but the problem occurs no matter what my sound output is set to. It happened when the audio output was set to the built-in speakers of my Mac Pro (yes Mac Pro have that!), when it was set to the speakers of the Cinema Display (LED one) and when it was set to my RME Babyface.
I don't think it's a Driver problem because it happened as well when I reinstalled OS X and Logic, and when I tested it on the Macs/Cinema Displays speakers, without the RME Babyface, basically without having installed any drivers or anything yet. So everything was fresh and untouched.
This is a very weird issue. I'm wondering if someone knows what I could do next.
My specs:
Mid 2010 Mac Pro 12-core 2,92 GHz
32 GB RAM
27" LED Cinema Display
OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks
Logic Pro 10.1.1
Thanks a lotHi,
thanks for your reply.
Like I said, this is a complete fresh install – I installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 from a USB installer, and re-downloaded Logic Pro X from the App Store. That's all. That means there's no 3rd party plugins, no 3rd party drivers, nothing, just the stock OS X system.
However, I just installed the RME Babyface drivers. But this makes no difference, as the problem was present before as well. I'm just saying that, because it appears in my EtreCheck Report which I will post an the end of this message, so you may be wondering.
I tried to delete the preference files and such before – no change.
Logic started normally (= no message or appeared or anything) while holding down Shift + Control, and also while holding down the Option key. The issue is still there. What would or what should it do if I hold these keys while starting? When I hold only the Control key however, it asked me if I wanted to start Logic without the Core Audio. I clicked to start without it, and then obviously everything worked.
So here's my EtreCheck report. Everything looks normal I'd say?

Okay, apparently there *is* a little problem. This part here:

I believed this was normal because my audio output was set to the external USB audio interface when I ran the test, but I ran it again with the sound output set to the Cinema Display, and this message still appeared. When I click the Information symbol, it says:
These are low-level parts of your operating system, usually provided by Apple, that run in the background while a user is logged in. Any failure that appears here may indicate a problem with your system.
I can't tell if there's a link to my Logic problem, however.
PS: I just remembered that I installed a system update for the LED Cinema Display which I downloaded from the Apple Support page. Maybe it has to do with that. It may have been an old update that was not needed. -
Spinning Beach Ball when trying to install CC
Help, help, help me pleeeeeze? I have job to do before the end of the weekend... I'm getting desperate!
I got the dmg file and tried to use the Creative Cloud Installer to start my free trial, but double clicking on the installer icon only produces a DLOG that says "Initializing Installer" with an empty progress bar and "Retry" and "Cancel" buttons. Re-downloaded the CC app and attempted install
--no good, same outcome
Frustrated out of my mind at that point, I shut off the computer and walked away. I don't know how the hell I'm ever going to get any work done! I'm sure not convinced I should buy a subscription at this point. I think I'll have to let my trial expire and just do all my free-lance work at my daytime job! Adobe won't be making any more money from me that way. -
ITunes - new iMac freezes & beach balls when trying to sync iPhone 3
I have a new iMac running Lion. When I try to sync my old iPhone 3g, iTunes freezes with the dreaded spinning beach ball for ever! When I do connect the iPhone, iTunes recognizes my phone in the list, but does not ever give me the option to even erase all my old content. Stranger still - when I get tired of the beach ball spinning and disconnect the iphone, the itunes list briefly displays all my iphone content (playlists, etc.) and then goes away. We have successfully synced a very old ipod shuffle (after wiping its contents) to new Imac, so cables, etc are not the issue. we did have to de-authorize all computers to get new Imac going, perhaps a clue? I have backed up the iphone to both an old mac mini (where it still syncs flawlessly) and have migrated data to new imac so I could recover. I am willing to lose iPhone data so I can sync. I am too cheap to buy newer iphone as it still works great.
my thoughts:
1. erase all content on iphone and then try to sync?
2. grumble and get new iphone?do you guy's fix the problem?

Can't get beyond the spinning beach ball when I open mail
I am running 10.3.9 and when I launch Mail, it opens about a dozen different mail messages and the beach ball starts spinning. After a few force quits and disk utility repair permissions, I am stuck. Please help!
Thanks!
BrianTry launching Mail holding the Shift (⇧) key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
If the problem persists, you’ll have to re-create the preferences file:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem). If you have a backup of your data that includes a working copy of this file, you may try restoring it from the backup to avoid the remaining steps.
4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
5. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
6. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
7. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

I would just like to make sure I am not missing something: I really dislike how there seems to be no option to import songs into my iTunes library as the files they already are, as opposed to what I choose for them to be. Example: If I choose to impo
