Safari adding .hqx to downloaded file name

I am on an imac with mac os x 10.4.11 and safari 3.0.4. I download a mac cd image file with filename of the form x.y.z.iso. safari downloads it but, mysteriously, adds .hqx to the name so it stores on my mac as x.y.z.iso.hqx. Then it tries to unstuff it and says it is not an encoded file. Of course it is not. It is a volume image. if i rename the downloaded file to x.y.z.iso and double click on it, it brings up the volume just fine on my desktop and I can open it.
Does anyone know why Safari would decide to add .hqx to a file name on download?

I think you are in essence describing what is happening, except for how I got there. In our infinite wisdom in taking this original file, we set up the download with some file type info or some such that we figured Mac would like better. It messed it up. that is why I could never figure out why a file destined as a WINDOWS iso image never was mishandled by Safari. it downloaded it and even produced a volume entry when opened, on the mac desktop.
once we stopped messing with the mac image file and just downloaded it as it came, Safari downloaded it correctly and did not add .hqx to it. thanks.

    I cannot open this file because it can't find an application.
    If I back out the .part, I get a box asking if I want to change the extension to .pdf I check yes, and everything works fine. It doesn't happen with other browsers (Safai).

  • Non US-ASCII characters in download file names

    I am trying to implement a simple file download in a JSP, and trying to get IE, Firefox and Opera to all display and handle non US-ASCII characters in the suggested download file name. Only concerned with Windows platform for now. Here's the code I am currently using:
    String agent = request.getHeader("USER-AGENT");
    if (null != agent && -1 != agent.indexOf("MSIE"))
    String codedfilename = URLEncoder.encode(cfrfilename, "UTF8");
    response.setContentType("application/x-download");
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment;filename=" + codedfilename);
    else if (null != agent && -1 != agent.indexOf("Mozilla"))
    String codedfilename = MimeUtility.encodeText(cfrfilename, "UTF8", "B");
    response.setContentType("application/x-download");
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment;filename=" + codedfilename);
    else
    response.setContentType("application/x-download");
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment;filename=" + cfrfilename);
    }This URL encodes the file name if the browser is IE, MIME encodes it if the browser is Mozilla, and sends plain UTF-8 (the encoding of the JSP) for all other browsers. I get "cfrfilename" from translated properties files, and the string can contain characters from any character set - Chinese, Thai, Korean, etc.
    This code works correctly for IE - the file name is displayed correctly in the file Save as dialog, and it is saved correctly on disk, no matter which character set is used.
    For Firefox, the file name is displayed correctly in the file Save as dialog, but it is only saved correctly to disk if the file name is in a character set supported by the system locale. This seems to be a known Firefox bug (not fully using the Windows Unicode APIs), so nothing I can do about that.
    Nothing seems to work for Opera, however - I cannot get the file name to display correctly in the file Save as dialog, no matter which method I use (I have tried URL encoding and MIME encoding in addition to the plain UTF-8).
    Has anybody implemented something similar that works for at least these 3 browsers?

    I tested your code today,
                         dialog           save           open
    Firefox 1.5          OK                 OK               OK
    IE 6.0                OK                 OK                NGdailog: filename show in download popup dialog
    save: save to disk from dialog
    open: open directly from dailog

  • Can we remove timestamp which is added infront of the file name, in archive

    Can we remove timestamp which is added infront of the file name of datafile which was imported succesfully , in archive folder, i have a requriment to move file from archive folder  to another folder, but programmer is finding diffficulty in moving the file which has time stamp, he can move file with date stamp, but not able to move file which has time stamp, is there is any option in MDIS.Ini file or anywhere in import manager or console to modify the file names , or remove timestamp when file is moved in archive folder.
    does anyone faced similar issue, require help.........

    Hi,
    Moving file from Ready directory to Archive directory is MDM internal process and I strongly feel it is not possible to control the naming convention of File to be placed in Archive directory.
    But you can explain what problem you developer is facing while moving file from Archive directory to some other directory..then we can think about solution to acheive this. Also on which operating system you MDM server is installed.

  • "Download a copy" shrinks downloaded file name

    I'm using SharePoint Server 2013 with Russian language pack.
    When in a document library, I choose "Download a copy" menu item in ECB on a file, and SharePoint 2013 downloads a file correctly (it can be opened and the file content is OK), but the file name is trimmed on the local hard disk: downloaded
    file name is only a couple of first words long, but in a document library the file name is much longer.
    It happens only on files that have names in Russian (cyrillic characters). Files that consist of English characters are downloaded with correct names as they appear in a SharePoint document library. So, it seems not to be connected to a URL length restrictions.

    I purchased an album online with my ipad2 directly from the artists website.  I received an email containing the link to allow me to download it.  I tapped on the link and the MSG came up saying Safari is unable to download file.  I have downloaded apps before with no problems.  This is the first music download I have purchased on my ipad2.  Maybe it has something to do with the security on the email I received from the artist containing the download.  I have the latest iTunes OS and apple iPad 2. O.S.  Any ideas on what to do?

    You can't download music via Safari on the iPad - you will need to download it on your computer, add it to your computer's iTunes, and then sync it to the iPad.

  • The files in download folder keeps adding _b to the file name

    I have a strange problem when downloading files on my Macbook Pro(running Mavericks). The name of the files being downloaded or already downloaded to the Download folder keep growing like this:
    Say for a file called My_file_name.zip, the system keeps adding _b to the name, it becomes
    My_file_name_b_b_b_b...._b.zip.
    And for big files, frequently I get the error message saying the file could not be downloaded due because there is no enough disk space. However the file is infact downloaded. I just need to highlight the .download and select Show Package Content, and copy the real file out of it. Howerer this is very annoying.
    This problems seems only happens when download files to the default Downoad folder. When downloading to other user selected folders, everything works fine, Please help if you know how to fix this issue.
    Thanks

  • %20 in Downloaded File Names

    Why in the **** do macs save downloaded files with a %20 everywhere there's a space in a document name and how do I make it STOP?
    Is there a utility one can download so that will make a Mac smart enough to recognize spaces?
    AAAAAhhhhhh!!!

    Might be corrupted preferences.
    Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Safari/Downloads.plist
    Click Go then move the Downloads.list file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch  Safari to test.
    If that didn't help, copy and paste the following
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Trash..
    Quit and relaunch Safari to test again.

  • "pop up download" File name -72890ad-26

    Recently i was on a site called tvduck.com and ever since i've been getting pop up downloads. they will show up in my downloads window but of course i wouldn't open them.says they were a download from tvduck.Been on this site before without issues.
    File name is 72890- ( the last numbers change ) the first one was 72890-1, then 72890-2 and so on. Now im up to 26!! First the icon on the left hand side was a firefox icon. I never use firefox so i tried throwing it in the trash. The next time the pop up download showed up, it says requested application cannot be used because it is in the trash. and now the icon on the left is a safari one. When on tvduck the mackeeper ad pops up, i always press cancel and close it off. i heard that mackeeper is nothing but trouble, maybe that has something to do with it. perhaps i pressed something differently without noticing.
    PLZ HELP!!   It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellow Mac-ers!

    ok i just did what you said, i'll let you know how it works out.
    meanwhile i tried opening the file ( curiousity killed the cat ) It directed me to a window that says
    "Have you tried smowtion?
    create an account and try a new alternative to monetize your website!"
    and there's a place to click "create account"
    I am not planning on creating account. just wondering if you have heard of this before? "smowtion"  what does it mean by monetize? it's been 5 or 10 mins now and i havent had that "pop up download" yet! so i just may be in the clear .
    Thanks for the help so far rkauf ! *fingers crossed*

  • Strange characters in downloaded file names

    Everytime I download a file that has a space or some kind of accent in it's name, I get some bizarre characters. For instance I get a %20% instead of every space in the file name...
    I guess it's an encoding problem but I haven't been able to find what the cause of the problem is or how to fix it. I've tried changing the default encoding in the Preference but doesn't change anything. I also tried to change the Language in the International System Preference panel, with no results.
    I've had this problem forever, but it's really frustrating to get this with what is supposed to be the most advanced operating system in the world. I've been bragging to my PC friends (well, they're not really friends, more like acquaintances) since 1984 about having no problems with accents, spaces, etc. in file names... and now...
    Please help.

    Everytime I download a file that has a space or some
    kind of accent in it's name, I get some bizarre
    characters. For instance I get a %20% instead of
    every space in the file name...
    It's not an encoding or language problem. Spaces are not allowed in urls, they must be replaced by %20, which is the escaped Unicode value for that character. Many servers do not accept spaces in the names of uploaded files, so the people uploading them delete spaces or replace them by underscores. But some servers do accept spaces in uploads and then replace them by %20. The same goes for accented characters.
    I don't think that there is anything unusual about what you are seeing, or that there is anything you can do about it.

  • Why is LR importing duplicate files and adding a -1 to file name?

    I need to locate some missing photos that disappeared from my library so I'm re-importing my photo collection again (from burnt DVD's) in hopes to recover all the missing images. When I insert a DVD to re-import the photo collection and choose "convert to DNG" and I check "do not import suspected duplicates" LR imports the same images that are already in the catalog and renames the images with a -1...for example, IMG_3664.dng is already in LR folder named 2008-06-14. When I re-import the images from that date, LR renames the image IMG_3664-1.dng and puts it in the same folder resulting in duplicate images side by side. Why is it importing the same image and adding a -1 to the file name?
    I was expecting it to tell me there are XXX photos already in the catalog but it doesn't. It just adds a -1 to the file name and imports all the duplicate images and displays them side by side in the grid view.
    Any ideas? I originally imported the images from the same DVD's I'm using now on a PC and placed the library on an external hard drive. NOw I'm using a new iMAC and I imported that same library from the same external drive location. I'm working with LR 1.31.
    Can someone help? LR should recognize the files with the identical date/time stamp and tell me it's already in the catalog...but it's not for some reason.
    Thanks

    If you import them again, you'll get a "-2" instead of -1, and the -2 will list with the -1,and the original with no dash. The higher number distinguishes the most recent file of same title..
    The file titles are identical as original, but it sounds as converting the file from the source,(PC, Hard drive) to DNG makes it another version of the file....do you type DNG in caps? should it be lower case?
    Because the computer doesn't read the file as a duplicate, but the file name is the same, you'll get a -1.
    This could probably happen,say, if your files are raw, and you had burned them as jpeg onto dvd storage. Even though you want them back as raw, converting them isn't duplicating them.
    I hope this helps...I don't even own Lightroom; I'm shopping around between this and Aperture right now...the experience I'm referring to is where I work in a pre-press printing house; So if someone replying to my post who masters in Lightroom calls me an idiot, I won't argue much!!
