Safari doesn't run, then stops responding.
On Friday night, I opened safari. After a few minutes, safari crashed. When tried to open it again, it sat on a blank screen saying it was loading, though it would alternate between loading and not responding. No matter how long I waited for it to stop loading, nothing was happening. Whenever I try to open other applications while waiting on safari, they do the same thing, alternating between working and not responding. Once I force quit safari, the other applications work normally again. I hadn't had any problems with safari up to this point, and my software is up to date. The internet connection isn't the problem either, as other programs that use internet are working fine.
Any suggestions?

HI,
Try here.
Safari - Trouble shooting
What you can do if Safari quits unexptectedly This link wil work for 10.4 also.
Check for sufficient disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

Thanks Patrick... on all projects... but did re-install Motion, and not responding has not happened. But many times, it still will not stop playing. I have to wait unitl it plays to the end mark. Ideas?

IPhone 4 - Safari no longer working; server stopped responding
Hi all,
Has anyone recently had issues with Safari? I've had this phone for a week and today Safari has decided it no longer wishes to work. When I try and load a page it states Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding.
I have tried:-
Turning off & on
Resetting iPhone
Resetting network settings
Clearing cache, cookies and history
Turning airplane mode off and on
Still no joy and I'm becoming very frustrated.
Has anyone had a similar probelm and have a workable solution please?
Thanks,
EmmaIssue fixed by Apple Support.
Here's what it is.
Seems if you have a break in connection with Safari running this issue may arise due to the new multi-tasking function.
The fix:
-go to your home screen
-quickly double tap the home button (if done properly, the icons on the home "page" will gray out and at the bottom will be certain icons. Those are the icons for the apps that are running in the background that permit multi-tasking. Hold a finger over the Safari app icon until all icons start to wiggle. Then tap the red "minus" symbol on the Safari icon. This will close Safari from running in the background.
-tap the home button again to restore the home screen display to the "colored" icons rather than the "gray" ones. The Safari icon should be where it usually is.
-tap the Safari icon to re-initialize it and it should take you to whatever home page you had set for Safari and you're back in business!
Simple and easy!
Many thanks to Apple tech support Alicia for her help. Thought I'd pass it along. -
Safari wants to make changes, stops responding
Every time I start Safari I see "Safari wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this" Then I type it and Safari stops responding. I hit cancel and it works but pops up every time I start safari. I have tried resetting safari in the developer menu but that did not work. What can I try to get this to stop doing this from popping up every time I run Safari?
I rebooted and it stopped. Stupid, just shoudld have tried tht first.

Just downloaded MacKeeper onto my 2011 MBP. Suddenly when I open safari, every page stops responding almost immediately after loading. The pages load from the bookmarks, so I know that the connection is good. Once a page hangs I can open another page, which then also hangs. I'm working through FireFox now but I'd really like to resolve this problem. Any suggestions>
HI Doug...
MacKeeper is the problem. Your Mac does not rrequire a third party so called, "cleaning" utility. It will do more harm than good as you have already experienced.
Follow the instructions here > Uninstalling MacKeeper

Safari 5.0.6 plug-in html file corrupted (now Safari doesn't run)
Not sure how well I can explain this, as I'm definitely a novice! Basically, Safari won't run or access certain websites b/c I'm guessing the html file for installed plug-ins is corrupt (Safari won't open the file file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Plug-ins.html. While trying to open this file, I continuously see the spinning "wheel"). Also, interestingly, I can't open the website listing Safari's extensions gallery for the security options. Safari will, however, let me access other sites (e.g., Apple Support).
This all started to happen the DAY after the following: In the interest of better securing my machine and/or having Safari run less slowly, I'd installed and enabled several RECOMMENDED Safari extensions (e.g., Web of Trust, Dr. WebLink Checker, and Ad Blocker). I'd also enabled ClicktoFlash and changed several preferences (to accept cookies only from sites I visit; unclicking "Enable Java"). Everything was working BEAUTIFULLY (must faster and, when visiting a site containing videos or banners, I could click FLASH to run Flash for videos/banners requiring it). Then, just this a.m., I first discovered I couldn't SEE ClicktoFlash and then discovered I couldn't open the plug-ins html file. I couldn't get into Canvas (a learning delivery system) that I desperately need. I've tried uninstalling the new Safari security extensions mentioned above, clearing Safari's cache and its history, restarting my machine, restarting Safari, and even resetting Safari. I've also repaired my disc permissions and restarted the machine, restarting Safari, etc. Nothing works to restore the plug-ins html file.
My husband -- who is very proficient with MACs -- can't figure this out. He did just install HIS version of Safari (same one for same OS) on my machine and disabled MY version of Safari. Still having the exact same problem re the plug-ins html file.
HUGE SIGH and thanks tremendously for recommending a fix!! I'd really rather use Safari than other browsers.
TamarajfAndy: BTW, do you have any ideas about WHY the plug-in html file will no longer load in Safari? As noted in my original query, this is what I'd done about one day before the plug-in file wouldn't load: " I'd installed and enabled several RECOMMENDED Safari extensions (e.g., Web of Trust, Dr. WebLink Checker, and Ad Blocker). I'd also enabled ClicktoFlash and changed several preferences (to accept cookies only from sites I visit; unclicking "Enable Java")." Thanks for any hints you can share! Tamara

Thunderbird opens in Windows 8.1 then stops responding. Why?
I cannot use Thunderbird and have reverted to Windows Live Mail which I hate. I can open Thunderbird. It will show any new emails but if I attempt to click on any thing else the program stops responding. I have tried to uninstall without success so that I can try a new download - equally without success. Anyone out there can help please? I'm running Windows 8.1 on a HP 64 bit All-in-one.
Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.
- Win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode
- Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
- XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Firefox opens a home page and then stops responding
I had no trouble until this evening when there was an update.
When I go to a website (I have tried a few) the home page opens.
When a try to open another page on the site I get the hourglass and Firefox stops responding. I have to close it using Task Manager and use Opera or Mousie instead. This started this evening. I was only offered a message to Microsoft. Not really a reply just some more info. Task Manager shows two identical instances of FF. Both close when you try to remove one.
I decided to try reinstalling - Add/remove could not remove FF. The reason - it must have been uninstalled already!!! -
Mail stops receiving messages and then stops responding
I have been using mail for over a year now with no major issues, until now. When I open mail it appears to open fine, and then it automatically starts taking the accounts online. The progress bar shows that there are 200+ messages to receive, and it shows the data rate at about 100ish kb/sec. Once it hits around 60 "received messages" of the 200+ the data rate consistently starts dropping until goes to 0 kb/sec and I can no longer take any accounts on line or even quit mail. The program responds reasonably well, but when I select "quit mail" the window will disappear, but the program will not quit. The only way I can stop it is to force quit. The accounts I use are pop3 and gmail accounts. I thought that maybe it was one account that was messing me up so I removed the accounts systematically and none of them are working properly. I also have been using wireless, so I connected via ethernet, but the issue persists. Any help is appreciated.
Exact same problem here. I tried moving the index file to the desktop and reopening mail. It rebuilds fine but then this problem starts again. It is only with one account, a pop3 account. Gmail works fine. I've deleted all mail in that account via webmail. It still hangs even though there are 0 mails to receive. The indicator shows it is still trying - and that will go on forever. Quitting just like movie_man describes.
Disabling that account solves the problem - but reenabling it brings it back.
I have the accounts sync'd with iPod touch and another home Mac. It has worked fine for years and then this, suddenly. -
I have 10.6.8.
I just ran the lastest updates for my MacBook Pro. Now, after the computer restarted and installed everything, Safari freezes, won't load the home screen, and gives me the ever-rotating beach ball of doom.
What happened? Fix?Boot from the Install disk and repair the disk with Disk Utility.
If that doesn't help, reinstall the 10.6.8 combo update.
And, you might try posting on the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard forum. -
I have installed FF4.0 recently. My operating system is Mac OS X 10.6.7. When I am running with the plug-ins active the following happens . .
Initial memory occupied is around 450 Mb.
Over a period of time 1-3 Hours ( it varies ) the memory used increases to 1.7Gb and my use indicator says this is 100% of available memory.
At that point FF4.0 ceases to respond while other applications are still working ( Mail etc. ).
If I start FF4.0 in safe mode the memory used stays around 500 Mb and is stable over a day at least.I have installed FF4.0 recently. My operating system is Mac OS X 10.6.7. When I am running with the plug-ins active the following happens . .

Safari stops responding and gets stuck loading a page
I have the latest version of Safari and it tends to stop responding, won't load a page and has to be forced quit. This only happened when I updated Safari. Can I go back to version2? Firefox works fine. From reading many blogs it seems to be a big problem. Could this knock Safari off the top spot for Mac users.
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 / )
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved. -
I have had my MacBook for about a month and I love it. But I have run into problem with Safari where it will just stop responding. For example, if I type in a web site address into the address bar and press enter, it does nothing and the address switches back what was originally there. If I click on a bookmark, any bookmark, it will not open the page, but just stays on the same page. It's not timing out or anything, it just does nothing.
I've tried resetting Safari, deleting the plist file and restarting it and even uninstalling and reinstalling it, but still run into this problem at least a couple times a day.HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Go to ~/Library/Safari and move the Bookmarks.plist file to the Trash.
Since you are running Snow Leopard, make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) *make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Relaunch Safari.
