Safari incorrectly caches window.setTimeout in setTimeout loop

I submitted an Apple bug report for this issue, but I wanted to post it to a public forum in case others have experienced this issue. It appears that Safari incorrectly caches the value of window.setTimeout (and does not respect new values to which it is set) if it exceeds a certain number of executions in a setTimeout loop. It's probably best shown through an example.
To reproduce, create an HTML page with the following content, and open it in Safari with the JavaScript console open:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<script>
var MAX_RETRY = 99;
var count = 0;
function retry() {
  console.log('retry called');
  if (count++ < MAX_RETRY) {
    window.setTimeout(retry, 10);
  } else if (next) {
    next();
var next = function() {
  next = null;
  window.setTimeout = function() {
    console.log('fake set timeout called');
  count = 0;
  console.log('second retry attempts');
  retry();
console.log('first retry attempts');
retry();
</script>
All browsers except Safari correctly output the following to the JS log:
first retry attempts
retry called (100 times)
second retry attempts
retry called
fake set timeout called
Safari does not respect the reassignment of window.setTimeout after it has executed in the setTimeout loop too many times. It instead outputs the following:
first retry attempts
retry called (100 times)
second retry attempts
retry called (100 times)
If you decrease the value of MAX_RETRY enough, Safari will eventually respect the new value of window.setTimeout. On Safari 6.0.5, MAX_RETRY seemingly has to be <= 8. On earlier versions of Safari, it has to be even lower.

Thanks for the info! Very useful to not become crazy while debugging it

  • Error: Permission denied to get Window.setTimeout

    I have created a bounded task flow which has single page and "close" as action to return to parent. I open it from another bounded taskflow as a popup. It opens and there is a button on the page named as "Close" which has action property as "close" to return to parent taskflow. Everything works fine when i run it in integrated weblogic with JDeveloper 11g. When i deploy it to standalone weblogic 10.3.3.x, it works perfect in IE but gives error in firefox (in all version) when i click "close" button on the page and popup is not closed. Error is following:
    Permission denied to get Window.setTimeout
    My environment is ADF 11g with latest patch set i.e. 11.1.1.3.x

    Hi,
    please file a service request with customer support if you can. This sounds like a software defect that should be filed as a bug

  • Safari and cache?

    safari 4.04
    for an extended time I have had the recurring issue of safari becoming slower and slower... if I am at a site for example espn.. and engaged on a forum... I will encounter problems with posting messages... such as not being able to contact the site... safari just seems to progressively become more twitchy and sluggish over a period of use... my question?
    in an attempt to find some level of improving this situation... tried clearing the cache using the safari menu... after this not seeming to have an effect... went to my user library and looked at safari's cache size.. which was around 700-800 mb... what was interesting is after using the safari menu to clear the cache... the size of the cache folder changed very little... so I tried a more extreme approach and just tossed the entire safari cache folder in the trash and deleted... restarted safari and it appeared to be much more responsive... but what I also observed is that within a very short period.. couple of hours... bang up to 600-700 mb of cache...

    In the great scheme of things, that is not a very large cache. If your Safari seems slow:
    (First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl. If you are running Snow Leopard, run Safari in 32 bit not 64 bit.)
    Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
    Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    (You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
    (An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
    Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
    Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
    Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
    This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
    Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
    If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
    Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
    Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
    Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
    Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Text Rendering issue in Safari 4 for Windows

    Note: I've failed to find a thread pertaining to this particular issue. If someone is aware of one, please excuse me and point this discussion in that direction.
    I am experiencing a problem with a Windows instal of Safari 4 that seems not to manifest itself on any of my mac machines. On select sites text is rendered as a jumbled mess of overlapping characters. To simplify matters I have linked to a screenshot of the problem:

    If anyone has any thoughts as to the cause of or solution to this problem I will be glad to hear from you.
    Thank you,

    HI,
    Try Safari maintenance.
    From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
    from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.

  • Safari Crashing On Window Opening

    Ok, I'm a pretty sophisticated user, so this one is driving me nuts.
    At some point Safari simply stopped working for me on one particular computer. It would just crash on launch. It's a computer I didn't use that much so I could live with it, but it was a pain.
    Purchaed a new 20" iMac, and moved my data to the new machine on setup. Immediately I discovered that Safari didn't want to work on this computer either. To me, this said that there was something in my User folder that was killing Safari.
    So I clean out the following locations:
    ~/Library/Safari/
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    ~/Library/Caches/Safari/
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari
    and then for good measure:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    Now, if I do all of this, I can get Safari to launch - which is good, because it allowed me to actually specify another browser as the default. I can even browse around. For more good measure, I select "Reset Safari..." and "Empty Cache...". But as soon as I try to open a second window, or if I close the one window and try to re-open a new window, Safari quits. If I have no default home page, it will launch but without a browser window showing, and as soon as I select "New Window", it quits on me again. If I specify a home page, it will just quit on launch.
    I don't have any extra tools or plugins or anything installed here, at least that I know of. But I'm just at a loss as to how to fix this problem that carried over from the other computer. I have run Disk Utility to repair permissions, to no avail.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi!
    I'm having the same problem with Safari crashing at the very get go. I just upgraded to the latest update last night. Went to open Safari after everything was finished and BANG ... the app quits as it's loading the homepage.
    I cleaned my permissions,the Safari caches, rebooted my G5 and still no go. I did manage to copy the crash log (it also can suddenly dissappear) and it says as follows:

    After installing the safari update for windows, outlook is now not opening email hyperlinks.  I have set safari to be my default browser but outlook won't open it when I click a link.  I get the following message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Hi mcclausky, you may need to manually remove a policy setting from the registry. You also should scan for malware that might have created this problem.
    This article lists scanning and cleaning tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
    To check your Windows registry for policy settings that might affect Firefox or other programs, I suggest consulting a Windows forum or Microsoft's forums. For example:

  • Cannot type in textfield in Safari 5.1 (Windows)

    Hi, i find that i cannot type in textfield in the Flash content in Safari 5.1 (windows), but work fine in other browsers . The Flash player is debugger version 11.4.402.278.
    tested in my app, and also the following link: http://www.adobe.com/devnet-apps/flex/samples/flex4_sparkinc/spark_inc.html

    timbosta,
    I had the same problem and resolved it by installing Mircrosoft's intellipoint software for my mouse at http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/downloads. I was then able to add Safari as a program that doesn't scroll correctly as garyfromoz points out. My scrolling issues are now fixed. Good luck.

    Safari on the PC does render differently than IE, FF and
    Opera. The
    fonts are bolder, but thats all I have ever noticed. There
    isn't
    anything you can do about it.
    I think most PC users with Safari only use it to test sites,
    as most PC
    users will use IE or FF. How does it look on a Mac?

    I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes numerous times and keep getting the message it reinstalled incorrectly stating windows Error 127.  I am using windows 7

    For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
    The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
    You may have more success if you use the advice in the Install missing components section to break down the installer into its component .msi files and install these in alphabetical order.

  • Safari not caching on iPad?

    When I open a new page then come back to the previous one, rather than just displaying the previous page just as it was when I minimized it by opening a new page Safari tends to redownload the page. This wastes time and bandwidth. I don't think Safari does this in my iPhone or desktop. I don't see any settings I can change. Is this normal? Does anybody else find it as annoying as I do?
    Another small issue is that when I open a new page Safari places the insertion bar in the Google search field rather than the url field. This too is annoying and a time waster forcing me to reposition the insertion bar. Is there a way to cause Safari to place the insertion bar in the URL field by default.
    Thanks.

    Hi Russ,
    Tap Settings in the Home screen then Safari / Clear Cache - Cookies and History.
    Restart your iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
    Hopefully that will kill two birds with one stone.

  • Possible reset safari and downloads window bug

    I have noticed, at different times on different macs...
    Reset safari, open the downloads window and the items in there do not clear out. In fact, it takes two reset Safari's to clear them out. Now, I have them set to download to desktop and not the downloads folder. I can reproduce 1 out of 3 times.
    Safari 3.1.2 and Safari 3.2
    Message was edited by: powerbook1701

    I have checked on multiple computers and even the Apple Retail store, the issue continues to happen, but there is no rhyme or reason what the trigger is:
    I have noticed with Safari 3.2 and 3.2.1 that when resetting Safari, the downloads window does not always clear out. Upon an additional reset, the window does clear out.
    If the downloads window was open, then you close it, reset safari, and then reopen the downloads window, whatever was there is still there (until you reset again).

    Yesterday while on WiFi at an international airport, I suddenly lost content in Safari. A window popup suggested that someone was trying to spoof setup.iCloud. After arriving home to my own network, Safari still was acting strange. Do I need to be concerned with possible malware or other destructive software remaining on my iPad?

  • Can't start Safari 4 on windows xp

    I recently installed Safari 4 on windows xp.
    At first it seemed to work fine, then it froze when I had over 6 tabs open.
    None of them would refresh.
    I had to end the process to shut Safari 4 down.
    I was able to restart Safari a couple more times but eventually Safari just won't start at all.
    I restarted the pc a few times. I uninstalled and reinstalled Safari 4 but nothing works.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks your help is appreciated

    I'm having a similar problem on Vista Home Premium (64bit). Safari 3 was working fine but after running the Apple Updater and installing Safari 4 it will not display on desktop. Checking processes running Safari is resident and running, consuming about 13mb of mem, zero cpu cycles, and 3 threads. I have a 4 cpu system (x9650) with 4gb mem. Tried completely removing (using the apple uninstaller and windows uninstaller)and re-installing with a fresh download of Safari 4. Still will not display the browser.
    Tried searching the web for others having this problem but not seeing much out there. Either these are corner cases or people are just giving up. Any thoughts on next steps?
