Safari interface is painfully slow but broadband speed fine

Hi there - for the last few days using the interface on my Safari has been paaaaainfully slow (writing text, changing tab, scrolling etc). However my broadband speed seems fine (8.7MB). Any suggestions for how to fix the interface speed? I have shut down iPhoto and iTunes but no improvement.
Bizarrely writing this right now is working fine but moving between tabs and writing in Gmail are still very slow...
I am not very tech savvy so any simple suggestions would be very much appreciated - thank you!

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions
Some routers are better than others on a Mac. It's all about the firmware and the degree of compatibility built into it by the developer. Make sure you have the latest Netgear firmware installed on the router. Check the support page on Netgear's site.
Also, in the Netgear Router preference panel, add these DNS server codes, which may facilitate the page loading on the Mac - 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222. There are OpenDNS codes, which have been shown to be much more efficient for Safari than those used by Internet Providers.

  • Safari is now painfully slow??

I keep my MacPro updated every week. But recently my Safari surfing experience has been PAINFULLY slow -- I mean really really really slow.
    Anyone else having this problem?
Also notice boot time with my MacPro has increased significantly with a ton a disk activity for the first 3 minutes.
I run Boot Camp on my MacPro and under Vista x64 surfing the web under IE7 is considerably faster. I also ran a speedtest (www.speakeasy.net) to several different locations and I'm getting good down speed at 10686 kbps and good up speed at 1170 kbps.
So it appears to be specific to Safari -- it's as if something seriously slowed down how it reads and displays the html. Are there any Safari specific settings that might help speed things up?
    Thanks, Rob.

The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 / )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • I have moved my Thunderbird profile to MyCloud and it is painfully slow launching. Performs fine once launched.

I decided to move everything to MyCloud and all works fine exept Thunderbird can take upwards of 30 seconds or more to launch. Firefox is a bit sluggish as well, but both perform fine once running. I am on the latest versions of each.

When you load Thunderbird is must load a lot of data. All of that data must come over a sluggish wire from a remote location. At the risk of sounding trite, what your doing is about the equivalent of filling an Olympic swimming pool with a bucket. when what is needed is a fire hose. When you actually have to compact your inbox and that 1Gb file is fetched and then returned the application will be very slow for a long time, and not just loading.
Comcast can not give you the speed you need, it may well be all the bandwidth they have going to your city. It is the equivalent of a fiber connection to the cloud location.

  • Firefox is painfully slow, but Safari is normal/quick

Hello. My pc laptop is running so slooow with Firefox browser, but with Safari it is normal, fast. This started 2 days ago. Firefox was running very nicely, fast, normal. Now I have to wait to see the letters after I type....everything is slow... Why? What can I do to make it normal again? I prefer Firefox.

For me this problems started with version 29. In another thread it was suggested that hardware acceleration might be the problem. I turned off hardware acceleration, and that fixed the problem.

  • Internet 2 times slower, but transfer speed ok

    Hi!
Have a time capsule 1st gen connected to wimax modem via ethernet, bridge mode.
When connecting to modem i have a 8 mbps speed, to time capsule - just about 4.
The weirdness is that the transfer rate between pc and capsule is about 130 mbps, so the signal is ok.
Assuming that there is no problem on the modem side (direct connection works well), what can be wrong? I tried to play with the settings on TС and sometimes it gave me about 0,5 mbps when the inner network speed was ok.
Where to look? What do i have to change?

Don't know what's causing it, but a few things to check are:
-- Do you have to run the TC in Bridge mode for your setup?
    -- Make sure you're using WPA2 Personal password protection/encryption.
-- What mode network is the TC set up for, and what modes are your PC capable of receiving. Generally, you will choose between 802.11 a, b, g, or n, or some combination of those. For most modern stuff you're going to want to use n.
-- Newer base stations support 2.4 Gz and 5 GHz bands. 5 GHz is faster, but has more limited range (meaning, it could actually be slower if it's far away) and less ability to penetrate obstacles such as walls. This is something you need to experiment with. Not sure if your Gen 1 supports 5 GHz.
-- You might be getting interference. Microwave ovens are notorious for this, but it can come from other sources, including cordless phones, wireless speakers, Bluetooth, DSS satellite receiver dishes, baby monitors, and other Wifi networks in the area. Try setting your TC to a specific channel instead of Automatic, and try a few different channels. There also used to be a checkbox called something like "Use interface robustness"...I think they might have changed the wording and offhand I can't remember what they call it now, but basically it can try using a few tricks to get around external interference (as I recall it uses smaller data packet sizes). Note that if you're not having problems, you want this OFF, as it will reduce speeds. But, if you are experiencing interference, it can help a lot.
-- Make sure your TC is set to transmit a full power signal (it can be reduced, normally you don't want to).
Just a few things to take a look at.

  • 2011 Macbook pro painfully slow, but CPU usage is almost nothing

I brought this macbook almost a year ago now and expect that my warranty has almost run out. At first the computer was fine and i could run almost every program on the computer without effecting performance, the almost suddenly the computer became slow, and gradually got worse. I now have trouble simply opening safari without it freezing for a few seconds to a few minutes. I work on the computer and it regularly crashes causing me to loose data.
i have tried resetting the P-RAM and deleting various files, searching for viruses etc. but nothing seems to make a difference. I would find it hard to format the drive and start again as i have about 300gb of files to backup and no way of doing that.
I can't take it to apple as the comuputer was an insurance replacment for a lost laptop and the warranty is with the insurance company, not apple.
Anything erlse i can try? It's running lion OSX 10.7.4
    Thanks
    Ryan

If you have an external drive that you can set time machine to back up to that is ideal.  There is no way to backup without some form of external media whether it be a single drive, a network drive etc.  Since the problem you are describing could be the hard drive it's a good idea to backup before you try anything that might stress the drive.

  • When i open safari it is very slow but once it has opened i can switch web sites very quick, can anyone tell me why.

I have a problem when i open Safari.it takes a few minutes to open, the home page opens but if i try to open ( say Amazon) it just sits there for more minutes before opening ,but once it has opened i can switch from web site to web site very quick.can anyone tell me why this and is there anything i can do to

Try changing the "Top Sites shows:" to the smallest number possible.  Safari is loading these sites when its starts so it can give you an image of what the site looks like when you start blank new window.  A smaller number of sites will make that quicker, assuming the top sites do not have a very slow site in the mix.

  • Safari is downloading painfully slow!

I have a problem from a few updates ago. When I'm downloading with Safari I get speeds of 30kb/s, wich is not because of my internet connection. In fact I tried downloading the same thing at the same time with different client and it gave me speeds of 1600kb/s.
I'm starting to think there is something wrong with safari's download client. Anyone having the same problem? Do you guys have an idea what the solution may be?

Sure, I did the test and my internet speeds are fine.
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2860964074
I do not expect crazy download speeds, but 30kb/s is a joke. I download a 300mb file for 3 hours . As I said other download clients/browsers download the file with speeds of 1300-1600kb/s.

  • Upload speed very slow, but download speed fast.

I have a wrtp54g router (4 wired, 1 wireless and 2 voip). On my laptop with wireless connection I have a fast down and upload speed. But on my PC with wired connection, I have a faster download connection and almost no upload connection. Tested on testmy.net. Can someone help me?

    Thanks for you're reply.
I've 1 wired PC and a XBOX360 wired. But I tested the same wired connection of my PC with my laptop --> same problem. I also tested the different ports on my router with my PC --> same problem. I recently discovered that when I only use 1 wired connection port on my router, my PC (disconnected my XBOX and also my 2 useless connections (which used to be plugged in to connect in different rooms of my house). I have a faster upload (1.2 MB) speed then before (0.2MB), it doesn't matter which port I use on my router. But still slower then my wireless connection (1.6MB).
Offcourse, last night worked everthing fine when I wanted to adjust the MTU settings. 1.7 MB upload with the different MTU settings and al my ports filled with connections.

  • Writing to Oracle is painfully slow, can i speed it up?

I am testing the Collections.sort() method on java.util. I have a table with 100,000 numbers. From an external program, I connect, build an ArrayList filling it with a looped read, sort the items and write the sorted list back with:
    for (Iterator i = list.iterator(); i.hasNext(); )
    pstmt.setString(1,(i.next().toString()));
    pstmt.executeUpdate();
Here are the results of each operations:
    OP:Connecting...
    ----The operation took 2.094 seconds
    OP:Building List...
    ----The operation took 6.562 seconds
    OP: Sorting 100000 items...
    ----The operation took 0.547 seconds
    OP: Writing Sorted List...
    ----The operation took 740.698 seconds
    740!!! Argh
How can I do this faster?

You might want to batch your statements so you aren't making 100,000 trips to the database.

  • Safari won't load Paypal but firefox works fine

I've seen a few threads on this problem but nothing I've tried seems to work.  Two days ago safari stopped being able to access Paypal on both my Macbook Air and iMac.  Both machines are less than 6 moths old, running the latest OS X and have all the updates installed.  The problem became apparent when I tried to make an eBay purchase and the redirect to Paypal failed.  I tried opening Paypal from Safari directly and it returns the message "Safari cannot open the page "..." because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server."
So far, I have checked the date & time settings, rebooted everything, checked all the certificates on Keychain deleting any that had expired and I have changed the DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 - this had the effect of causing iMessenger to cease to work and also prevented me from accessing the iCloub website stating the same "Failed to open page" message.  In exasperation I have even reinstalled OS X on my Macbook which did work for about thirty seconds, allowing me to login to paypal but on going back to the sight after restarting to double check, it has reverted back to the failed to open page status.  iMessanger and iCloud are now fixed though.
I have downloaded and opened Firefox and tried the same web address and it works fine.
The Paypal issue is a mystery therefore that I hope someone can help with as it's effected both my machines and I have had to revert to the iPhone App to pay for anything using Paypal, which is a pain.  Any ideas would be most welcome.

MIght be a cookies, cache, or extension issue ..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • E1200 wireless slow, but wired is fine

My newly installed E1200 only sends speeds of about 16 mbps wireless, but sends the ful 60 mpbs when wired.  What is going on.  Firmware is up to date.  Changing the channels didn't do anything.  Is there a way to figure out if the problem is with my laptops wireless card.  Please help

  • Safari painfully slow on new Mac Mini

I know there have been a number of threads on this topic and I have tried all of the tricks listed but Safari is still painfully slow to load web pages. I have tested my internet connection and it is fine. The real interesting thing here is that when I boot up under Windows (using Boot Camp) web pages load blazingly fast under IE, so it seems unlikely that I have a hardware problem. I have also tried Firefox with similar results. I love this new machine but I am pulling my hair out over its browsing performance.
    Anyone have a (new) thought?

Please try a test account to see how Safari works
there, if you do not have an other user account,
Go to System preferences ->Accounts ->Login Options
Tried this and believe it or not the problem was worse!
se the [+] to create one, you can later use [-] to
    delete/remove the account.
Do you use a third party Firewall or one on your
    router ?
    No on both accounts
Do you use DHCP Lease ?
Yes, I hit the "renew lease" button which had no effect
In the Network ->TCP/IP tab do you have DNS # values
    entered in the
    DNS Servers box.
    No entries in the DNS
Proxies tab, do you have any proxies selected ? if
Yes how does Safari surf with out it ?
    No proxies selected
Let us know what your findings are.
    Eme: )
I am going to try FireFox again and see if there are any things I can tweak that make it bearable.
    Thanks, Richard
