Internet 2 times slower, but transfer speed ok

Hi!
Have a time capsule 1st gen connected to wimax modem via ethernet, bridge mode.
When connecting to modem i have a 8 mbps speed, to time capsule - just about 4.
The weirdness is that the transfer rate between pc and capsule is about 130 mbps, so the signal is ok.
Assuming that there is no problem on the modem side (direct connection works well), what can be wrong? I tried to play with the settings on TС and sometimes it gave me about 0,5 mbps when the inner network speed was ok.
Where to look? What do i have to change?

Don't know what's causing it, but a few things to check are:
-- Do you have to run the TC in Bridge mode for your setup?
-- Make sure you're using WPA2 Personal password protection/encryption.
-- What mode network is the TC set up for, and what modes are your PC capable of receiving. Generally, you will choose between 802.11 a, b, g, or n, or some combination of those. For most modern stuff you're going to want to use n.
-- Newer base stations support 2.4 Gz and 5 GHz bands. 5 GHz is faster, but has more limited range (meaning, it could actually be slower if it's far away) and less ability to penetrate obstacles such as walls. This is something you need to experiment with. Not sure if your Gen 1 supports 5 GHz.
-- You might be getting interference. Microwave ovens are notorious for this, but it can come from other sources, including cordless phones, wireless speakers, Bluetooth, DSS satellite receiver dishes, baby monitors, and other Wifi networks in the area. Try setting your TC to a specific channel instead of Automatic, and try a few different channels. There also used to be a checkbox called something like "Use interface robustness"...I think they might have changed the wording and offhand I can't remember what they call it now, but basically it can try using a few tricks to get around external interference (as I recall it uses smaller data packet sizes). Note that if you're not having problems, you want this OFF, as it will reduce speeds. But, if you are experiencing interference, it can help a lot.
-- Make sure your TC is set to transmit a full power signal (it can be reduced, normally you don't want to).
Just a few things to take a look at.

  • Internet is very slow but says i have a good connection ?

My internet is very slow but yet i have a good connection please help

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same?
What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Slower Network Transfer Speeds with .7

Since upgrading to .7, I've noticed slow transfer speeds. For example, when transferring one large file, I get 11MB/sec on average. When transferring a bunch of smaller files, I get about 1 - 1.5MB/sec. I remember is being faster in .6
This is transferring files from my Mac Pro to my Time Capsule, using Gigabit Ethernet.
Can someone let me know what speeds you are getting when transffering a large file from a Mac Pro to a TC and also a bunch of small files from a Mac Pro to a Time Capsule. (or any NAS drive)
I used Activity Monitor to test the speeds. Thanks.

Does your PC have a FireWire port? you can use IP over FireWire for better throughput than the wired ethernet.
You can't use link aggregation in this case since it requires multiple interfaces of the same type (e.g. two gigabit ethernet cards), but you cannot mix media such as AirPort and Ethernet.
The alternative would be to install a gigabit ethernet card in your PC. You'd at least then get gigabit ethernet speed between the two devices which is also a step up.

  • SuperDrive slow Data Transfer Speeds

I have several home movies DVDs I would like to loadback onto my mid-2011 27" iMac but it is taking for ever to complete the transfer. One DVD disk takes 6 hours because the transfer speed is crawling.  I read up onthis and info says my HL-DT-STDVDRW GA32N (FirmwareVersion KE06) is made by HLDS and they have implemented riplock which slows the data speed way down to preserve SuperDrive life expectancy anddecrease noise level. How can I disable this riplock to restore the data speed. I bought this fast/expensive machine and the SuperDrive of all things is slowing medown. Completely unacceptable.

I was having a problem ripping store bought CD's to ITunes and opened a case with Apple for suspected hardware issue. Turns out the problem was Norton AntiVirus by Symantec which was blocking my external drives. Even though the CD is internal it was killing it. Once I shut off Norton everthing started working.
The way I came to figure out it was a Software and not hardware issue was that the Superdrive worked perfectly under Windows 7 inside of VMWare Fusiion.
If you have any sort of AntiVirus, try shutting and down and using the Superdrive.
My machine is the same , late 2011 with Firmware KE06

  • Slow write transfer speed on shared xsan folder - osx 10.8.3

    XSAN3 - OS X 10.8.3
I am getting slow transfer speeds when saving to a shared xsan folder using the smb protocol.
Writes are about 15 MB/s.  Reads are about 85 MB/s.
Some transfers to the shared xsan folder will fail and it doesn't matter if I am reading or writing.
If I share a folder from the system drive, the speeds are much higher and I do not have any transfer failures.
Writes are about 76 MB/s.  Reads are about 99 MB/s.
If I transfer files using the file server I am sharing from, I get write speeds close to 90 MB/s to the xsan volume.
    Using the AJA Test Tool:
Maximum write speeds to the xsan volume are about 600 MB/s
Maximum read speeds from the xsan volume are bout 700 MB/s
The file server and metadata controllers are Mac Pro 5.1 Mid 2012.
Xsan Storage is the Vtrak EX30.
It is configured according to documentation supplied by apple and promise.
All Xsan clients are dual nic with nic 1 configured for public and nic 2 configured for the private.
I have checked the XSAN admin tool and all metadata IPs appear correct for all clients,
thery are all using the private IP.

What template did you use for the creation of the SAN?  Recall, if you did a video template but you are transferring generic office files, your performance will suffer.  This is due to the block allocation size calculations.  The SAN may be tailored for specific types of writes.  If you are doing something outside of the expectation, you may experience negative performance.

  • Slow USB transfer speed when iTunes is running

    hello everyone,
today I was trying to transfer a bunch bunch of files from my NAS to a portable USB 3 hard drive.
the transfer speed was 18 to 20 mbytes/s... quite slow for this device.
after investigation the problem was found that when iTunes (11.0.1) is NOT running the tranfer speed goes up to 90+ mbytes/s
anyone has an idea on how to solve the problem?

The only testing that could be performed prior to resetting the AirPort would be to make throughput performance measurements ... but, at best, these would only stand to confirm the slow transfer speeds that you are seeing.
However, if you do want to make some quantitative measurements, one easy to use (& free) utility is: AJA System Test.

  • Slow fileshare transfer speeds with Lion Server

I'm running Lion Server on a Mac Mini and using SMB to share files between the server and both Windows and Mac machines. I can't figure out why I can only get 2 Mb/s transfer speeds between the server and the other machines. I'm quite certain I'm not limited by my network and the disk write speeds clearly exceed 2 Mb/s. Any suggestions for boosting this speed or is this an actual limit of SMB or Lion Server?

Have a similar issue on a Macbook Pro mi 2010 : since the 10.7.3 update, Samba file sharing (to access a FreeBsd server over the LAN) is extremely slow. I mean I can't work normally since the update (3 weeks).
I've reported the bug to Apple. I think it is a bug limited to some machine version (because other mac in the office do not have the issue)

  • [solved] Intel 5300 slow network transfer speed

    Heya,
I'm having trouble with my WiFi card Intel 5300 AGN and i hope you can help me.
It's the transfer speed in linux that bugs me. While I get 9 MB/s in Windows I can't for the life of me get more than 2.5 MB/s transfer rate in linux. And this is only if I use NFS4 and turn off the wifi power saving feature. Samba/CIFS gives me transfer speeds of no more than 0.4 MB/s.
The problem has to be somewhere in my linux software/configuration. But where?
I don't have much experience with WiFi configuration in Linux so mine should be pretty vanilla. No manual change of frequencies, channels and the likes. I simply use netcfg to connect and sometimes iwconfig to toggle the power saving feature.
Here's what iwconfig shows me right now while copying a big file:
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"bett"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:14:D1:C7:43:C4
    Bit Rate=243 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
    Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Encryption key:off
    Power Management:off
    Link Quality=61/70 Signal level=-49 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:11922 Invalid misc:2 Missed beacon:0
As you can see, power management is disabled. The link quality is very good and the bit rate is at 243 Mbps (which should give me about 15 MBps right?). Yet the transfer rate is only 2 MBps, sometimes dropping as low as 0.7 MBps, sometimes spiking to 4.5 MBps for a second or two.
What can I do to improve my network speed?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    demian

    Thanks for the reply zvxy.
I'm running the most current from [core], version 2.6.37.5-1.
Disabling the N mode improved transfer rates for CIFS/SMB shares. They are the same as with NFS now which is around 2.5 MB/s. Transfer speed for NFS stayed the same.
I'll try the kernel from [testing] and report back later.
// I've tested 2.6.38.2-1 a little bit now and as long as i don't disable wireless N i get transfer rates of up to 12 MB/s with NFS4. That's more than enough for me and i hope it stays that way. The downside is that transfer rate for CIFS is only 1 MB/s.
If i disable wireless n mode NFS transfer rates drop to ~2.8 MB/s while CIFS transfer rates go up to ~2.4 MB/s.
Guess I'll just have to stick with NFS (not that i don't mind but it's already thrown me some "stale" error messages with the new kernel ... i can't seem to catch a break ).
I'll consider this issue solved. Thanks!

  • Slow file transfer speed on OS X / Windows LAN

I have a Mac Mini with OS X Server (Yosemite) on a network of 5 Windows 7 PCs, the server hosts FileMaker Server 13 and also some files in a shared folder.
I notice the file transfer speed when copying a file from one PC up to the server's shared folder is around 350KB/second, is this an acceptable speed? how could I improve it?
    Thanks for your help.

I'm having the same issues.. I recorded a bunch of video with the 4s.. now i'm copying them to my windows 7 pc with it peaking out at 900KB/sec.  My corsair thumb drive in the same port gets 5-10x this speed.  any luck getting faster speeds?

  • Mpower slow LAN transfer speeds.

    Hi, I have an issue with the Realtek NIC. When I transfer a file from my harddisk to my NAS the transfer speed is very low (  +/- 100kb/s, see attachment ). This is what I have tried so far;
    - Installed the latest Realtek drivers from their website
    - Changed the Large Send Offload adapter settings.
    - Disabled all security related software.
With my previous PC I used to get +/- 10 mb/s when transferring a file to my NAS using exactly the same setup (cable, router ect). Does anyone know a fix for this issue?

I have the same  problem. I tried to transfer a game on the pc of my friend and the transfer speed was  10kb/s

  • Internet is very slow but shouldn't be...

I have had a MacBook for about a year now and until recently my internet has been working fine. We just moved to our house in Canada and now my internet has been very slow most of the time. When i first turn on my computer the internet works great. The activity monitor shows a very high speed (aound 120 kb/s average). After a minute the internet slows down to around an average of 5 to 10 kb/s. Our iMac's internet works great and both computers are using the built in airport. I downloaded iAntiVirus and scanned my computer and nothing bad was found. There is an old windows laptop with a wireless card right next to my laptop that has good internet speed. I can't think of whats wrong but I think something is slowing my internet down.
Any suggestions to how this can be fixed/what's wrong?

    Some more info,
I have found that this problem (internet 'fading' out and in) happens wherever I am. Also, a friend had this problem with his apple computer and his Dad fixed it somehow so I'm pretty sure there is a fix.

  • Browser response time slow but Analyzer fast with same query

    Hi all,
We have a very complex query (structures and cell formulas).  When I drill and filter on a specific characteristic the action takes anything between 7 and 15 minutes when using the browser. The same query in Analyzer performing the same drilling action takes less than 35 seconds.
    Our architecture is as follows:
    - Relevant cubes are indexed on BWA
    - WebDynPro for Java
We can see that the BWA is hit for a short time then the CPU utilization is back to 0%.  When doing '&profiling=x' on the browser I can see that the most of the time is spent on 'Get result set' / 'Get provider result set' for the Java events and on the OLAP side most time is spent on the 'Get result set' event.
Interestingly enough - when disabling myself as a user for BIA use (NO_BIA_USE) in my user profile I get the same response time on the browser.
So, does anyone have an idea of what may be the cause of the slow response time when using the browser?
    Thanks
Edited by: Cobus van Rooyen on May 10, 2010 8:49 PM

    Hi,
The reason is most likely because of the event ID 3200 where data transfer takes place from OLAP to frontend browser.
Record a RSTT trace for this and if you are able to see frequent calls to "Apply State XML" and "Get Result Set" then apply the SAP Note 1428850. Otherwise see which function module is causing an error.
If trace runtime is less but in browser still it takes long time then this might be because of the compression of HTPP responses, which can be confirmed by observing the sent and received data volumns from the HTTP server requests/responses. For more information refer SAP Note 746666.

  • Time Capsule data transfer speeds

    Hi,
I just bought the 1TB Time Capsule. I'm copying 117GB from MacPro to TC which after an extremely slow start 12Mbps is now bouncing around between 80 and 120Mbps. For Gigabit Ethernet (CAT6) these speeds are not impressive. Out of curiosity, what does everyone else see? I've had 2 Macs connected together at 450Mbps so was expecting similar from TC with its "server-grade" hard disk.

You don't need a modem with FIOS, you can just get rid of the VZ router and replace it with your own (you call Verizon to get them to change your connection from COAX, the same thing that goes to your tv, to ethernet from your ONT) but will lose video on demand on your tv  and caller id on tv. If you  want those to stay you can keep the VZ box and play with configurations listed here.
Think you should actually say that without the router you'd lose fios tv completely (it has to be in the network somewhere to provide coax signals), though possibly you could connect a coax cable from the ont directly to 1 tv.

  • Slow Data Transfer Speeds Between Macs.

    Hello Can anyone please help?
When I transfer data between my MacBook and iMac it is taking ages and never used to be this slow a couple of months ago.
A 1 GB file is taking 2 hours. I am using an Airport Extreme 802.11n router on 5GHZ Wide Channel and when I check my connection using Network Utility it says 270 MBit/s.
    Any help would be appreciated

I am having a very similar issue. I am copying iTunes music to a USB flash drive formatted to FAT32.  It is very slow - not as slow as you have indicated, but still very slow. Someone mentioned it could be Spotlight indexing the USB drive. I am going to turn indexing off and try again - although it is taking a long time just to stop the current copy that I had in progress.

  • Safari interface is painfully slow but broadband speed fine

Hi there - for the last few days using the interface on my Safari has been paaaaainfully slow (writing text, changing tab, scrolling etc). However my broadband speed seems fine (8.7MB). Any suggestions for how to fix the interface speed? I have shut down iPhoto and iTunes but no improvement.
Bizarrely writing this right now is working fine but moving between tabs and writing in Gmail are still very slow...
I am not very tech savvy so any simple suggestions would be very much appreciated - thank you!

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions
Some routers are better than others on a Mac. It's all about the firmware and the degree of compatibility built into it by the developer. Make sure you have the latest Netgear firmware installed on the router. Check the support page on Netgear's site.
Also, in the Netgear Router preference panel, add these DNS server codes, which may facilitate the page loading on the Mac - 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222. There are OpenDNS codes, which have been shown to be much more efficient for Safari than those used by Internet Providers.
