Safari on Mac frozen with VIRUS FOUND popup

I was on Safari on Mac and entered a website "invipsuite.com" in the URL window and suddenly my Safari froze with a popup "Virus found - The last website you visited has infected your Mac with a virus. Press OK to begin the repair process" and there is just one button OK. The popup lists the website macupdate.com-apple.menu" and this is the URL I now find in teh URL window.
I did not click on the OK button, but my Safari is frozen with this pop on it.
Please HELP!

For yourself and Mike, there's no adware to be found because it isn't adware. Nor was anything downloaded or installed on your Mac in any way. As the articles explained, it's nothing more than a browser trick that keeps you from moving off the page once there.
There isn't even the slightest thing to be concerned about. Unless, that is, you actually called the number displayed and gave them your credit card number, or live remote access to your Mac.
Why Apple hasn't released a fix for these JavaScript loops yet seems strange to me. They certainly know about it, and users who believe these garbage pages, call the phone numbers and/or install the remote access software they convince you to install are getting fleeced daily.

  • Safari for Mac, webpage with Java applet, drag and drop area not working.

At my company, we have a web page that our users access to submit media files, (QuickTime, Audio, images...), for transcoding for delivery.  The web page consists of a java applet, with an area that our users drag and drop media file into.
After updating to Safari 5.1.2, the applet will not work anymore. Instead, the browser will "open" the quicktime and play it, instead of allowing the Java Applet to do it's job.
CAN I TURN THIS FUNCTIONALITY OFF??
I read that Safari 5.1.2, (when it was initially released), broke something with the THEN current version of Java, and everyone was awaiting the latest update (build 1.6.0_29) to fix it. Unfortunately, this update did not fix my issue with the functionality of dragging and dropping media files into the web page.
It seems to me, as if, there is an over-arching functionality setting (or something) that needs to be either turned off, or in some other way DE-prioritized.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for quick reply and help. I am able to drag multiple files but this is giving problem in case of filename with spaces like "abc def.png". Can you please put some thoughts on this.

  • Mac infected with Virus

    Hello
When I was watching videos on Youtube yesterday, my mouse suddenly moved itself. I paused the video and just watched the mouse and it suddenly just moved. I did not touch the mouse at all and it was dragging and moving. It annoys me and when I try searching the problem up at Google, whichever word I type just gets deleted . The virus prevents me from typing. I closed even the network connections and it still moves by itself. I downloaded VirusBarrier (Free) and scaned and can't find any problems. Right now, it is okay and everything is under control BUT just just in this week, I have experienced 3 times of my computer going the "grey screen of death". It all started yesterday and I experienced a grey screen yesterday. I experienced the grey screen twice today and I feel like it is the virus doing all these. Thank you!

I have experienced 3 times of my computer going the "grey screen of death"
The gray screen is not caused by a virus or malware so you can rule that out. And insatlling Virus Barrier may even compound the issue.
Uninstall Virus Barrier by following the instructions here >  http://oit.ncsu.edu/antivirus/uninstall-intego-virusbarrier/
Then try troubleshooting >   Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • Computer frozen with virus

I am not a computer technician. However, I believe my computer has a virus. It has some sychadelic pattern that is present when I start it up and will not let me access anything. This is the first time in six years that this has happened. If I can "dump" everything and then start from scratch, that would be OK. I just want my laptop to work again-I need it for school.

How old is your Mac. You say this hasn't happened in 6 years, is that how old your Mac is?
More then likely your Mac has failed. Fixing a 6 year old Mac will be expensive. May be time to buy a new one.

  • Bootcamp Issues: XP Frozen with New Hardware Found screen

I've installed bootcamp on an Imac with MacOS 10.6.4. This went fine. Then I installed XP. This went fine as well. Then I inserted a Mac OX X Snow Leopard 10.6.4 disk to install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows. But XP is just frozen with the "Found New Hardware Wizard" screen. Nothing happens.
The Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6.4 disk is not the one that came with the Imac. We don't have that disk. Could this be the problem?
If so, what can be done at this point?

That could indeed be the problem. What OSX disc are you using ? A retail bought one ? Or one that came with another Mac ?
If so, what can be done at this point?
Best would be to call Apple while having the serialnumber of your iMac at hand and ask for replacement OSX discs.
Usually Apple sends them to you for a relativlely small fee.
Since you also need the OSX disc for basic troubleshooting tasks it is vital to have one.

  • Can a PC infected with virus make breaches if Time Capsule firewall?

    Hello!
Recently had my PC (not mac) infected with virus. Is there a possibility that viruses can make changes to Time Capsuel settings andmake breaches in Time Capsuel firewall?
For example set port mapping via UPnP  for viral activity on TC or something like that? I'm not very fond of network technologies - but know that some programs can set routing ports on their own. Or am I mistaken?
Maybe it is worth to make a full reset for TC? I dont know.

But any bother needs open ports to be able to use planted virus behind the firewall, right?
This will not happen very often.. NAT is a not strictly a firewall. It can be broken under pretty intensive attack but still seldom happens. The virus gets into the computer via YOU.. you browse to a compromised website or download an infected application or email etc. The vast majority of infected computers cannot actually be prevented by firewalls.. unless as John pointed out, you cut yourself off from the internet. The internet is out there and for you to gain access to it, to some degree it has to have some access to you. But YOU are the one who infects the computer in 99% of cases.
Once infected the computer on a LAN can infect other computers on the LAN.. because people do not password their shares. There is little protection. And from inside the LAN the virus can then call home. It does not do anything to the router. Because you have to have the ability to open ports from the LAN side the virus can take advantage of that.
Note in a business with a strong firewall, only a very limited number of ports are available. And there is a lot more effort put into virus checking. For home system.. just NAT and NOT downloading suspect apps and emails will keep you pretty clear of problems with the need for a decent AV for the occasional mistake.
Do not torrent, do not use USENET, do not go to Warez and suspect places. Download Prawn and you will have your computer loaded with viruses in no time. It is free and available but has a big sting in the tail.
If you want to do all those things.. well plan on getting infected pretty often and use the computer in proper DMZ and wipe it pretty often.

my mac is infected with viruses, Safari can not normally search for constantly appear commercials and some unknown site. What to do? antivirus free program that you recommend?

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that this Internet criminal has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

O.k. Thanks for the clarification. I poked around in my TimeCapsule router's settings (TimeCapsule is an Apple Airport Extreme router with attached hard drive for wireless backup/storage). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I can disable multicasting with the TimeCapsule. I can change the multicasting 'rate'. Settings are Low, Medium, High. It's currently set to Low.
I did a few web searches, and found an Apple.com article: <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789?viewlocale=en_US> which explained how to disable Bonjour Service Advertisements. I believe this is the same thing as 'Multicasting'. The process is a modification of "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist", and a restart of the Mac is required afterwards.
I'm a bit concerned that disabling multicasting will interfere with my AppleTVs and iTunes music sharing, but I may try it next time I'm up for a computer workout. This task will require editing of system preference files, could require multiple restarts, might interfere with my AppleTVs, could interfere with my iTunes file sharing, doesn't have a documented relationship to my problem.
This is way to difficult for something that should just work. Did you say you had read something about a relationship between this bonjour multicasting and smb connectivity? If it was online could you post the link?
I'm currently able to connect to the drive using NFS, but I have to manually configure that connection each time I reboot (can't get the 'Disk Utility' configured to do it automatically). While it's working with NFS, it's not my preferred connect method (for various reasons).

  • AIM virus? "Virus-detection" popups in Safari?

Could it be, some sort of virus on my beloved macbook pro? Here is the story..
Last night when I logged into Adium, I received a message from "aim" claiming that I had some sort of friend request waiting for my approval, and someone wanted to list me in their profile. I hovered over the link and it went to the aim website, and curiosity always kills the cat.. I clicked. (Dumb, right?) Well, it did take me to the aim website and it was asking for my log in, so I closed.
Since then the same IM pops up every time I log on. I'm not sure if that has any affiliation with my next problem, but it could be useful information. I went to myspace.com, and I received a pop up saying something along the lines of "Malware/Spyware has been detected on your computer and you should resolve it by going to this website and downloading our anti-virus software." There was a URL at the top, not sure where it went to because it didn't matter. I canceled out because I had no other option, and it came up again. I canceled once more, and it came up again with only OK as the option. I tried force quitting Safari, and it didn't work at first. I received yet another pop up talking about slow script, asking if I wanted to continue to run it, and I said no, then hit apple alt esc and managed to close Safari.
Everything seems to be working fine in Firefox. Any suggestions as to how to rid of whatever might be happening, or any information on what it is at all would be greatly appreciated, I am not sure where to start. I'll be the first to admit that I an a novice when it comes to this sort of thing. Thank you for your help. I will be happy to give anymore information if needed.

Yes, sites like that (Adium, FaceBook, YouTube) are notorious for being the prime sources of 'scareware' and malware, most of which is aimed at Windows users and extracting unnecessary money from them with pointless, worthless software. No malware can affect your Mac unless you allow it to install, which in most cases would require your root password.
In your case you may have acquired a 'tracker cookie' sending you to other sites than you intended.
To get rid of them you ned MacScan:
The appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
A white paper has recently been published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
    http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
    Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/
More information on Mac security can be found here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
The MacScan application can be downloaded from here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
You can download a 30 day trail copy which enables you to do a full scan of your hard disk. After that it costs $29.95.
More on Trojans on the Mac here:
    http://www.technewsworld.com/story/63574.html?welcome=1214487119
The latest news on the subject, from July 25, 2008, is:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.
    Further details here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7525206.stm
A further recent development is the Koobface malware that can be picked up from Facebook (already a notorious site for malware), as reported here on December 9, 2008:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_7773000/7773340.stm
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.
