Computer frozen with virus

I am not a computer technician. However, I believe my computer has a virus. It has some sychadelic pattern that is present when I start it up and will not let me access anything. This is the first time in six years that this has happened. If I can "dump" everything and then start from scratch, that would be OK. I just want my laptop to work again-I need it for school.

How old is your Mac. You say this hasn't happened in 6 years, is that how old your Mac is?
More then likely your Mac has failed. Fixing a 6 year old Mac will be expensive. May be time to buy a new one.

  • Safari on Mac frozen with VIRUS FOUND popup

I was on Safari on Mac and entered a website "invipsuite.com" in the URL window and suddenly my Safari froze with a popup "Virus found - The last website you visited has infected your Mac with a virus. Press OK to begin the repair process" and there is just one button OK. The popup lists the website macupdate.com-apple.menu" and this is the URL I now find in teh URL window.
I did not click on the OK button, but my Safari is frozen with this pop on it.
    Please HELP!

For yourself and Mike, there's no adware to be found because it isn't adware. Nor was anything downloaded or installed on your Mac in any way. As the articles explained, it's nothing more than a browser trick that keeps you from moving off the page once there.
There isn't even the slightest thing to be concerned about. Unless, that is, you actually called the number displayed and gave them your credit card number, or live remote access to your Mac.
Why Apple hasn't released a fix for these JavaScript loops yet seems strange to me. They certainly know about it, and users who believe these garbage pages, call the phone numbers and/or install the remote access software they convince you to install are getting fleeced daily.

  • Main Computer infected with virus

My Son has a Dell running Windows XP2 Home Edition. Fortunately he has not connected his ipod since the virus appeared. The dell is in the shop but is an old unit and the virus cannot be cleaned without a system complete restore to original. I have purchased a new Vista for his school work. If we assume his old computer is dead or may possibly infect the ipod if he plugs it into the old computer. Is there a way to transfer all his music on the ipod 30G to the new computer without any change requiring connecting back to the old computer. (example Apple says to change auto to manual on old computer then transfer)
    Thanks for any suggestions.

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
    All Vista compatible.

  • Computer frozen with black screen

I have had this problem for a few months now.
My mini works fine otherwise, but left idling (always on), it regularly locks up after unpredictable time lengths, sometimes one day, sometimes many days. The sceen goes completely black (no signal) and the Mac is frozen (no keyboard combination can revive it). The small LED in the front it ON, and the computer is attached to a UPS, so I know the computer is ON.
The only solution is a forced reboot, upon which sometimes (but not always) the following error pops up: "The computer restarted after Mac OS X unexpectedly quit" and offers to send a report to Apple. Nothing in the reports gives me any clues. Also, the computer did not "restart". Maybe it tried, but it got "stuck" in that state.
At one time, I noticed that this would happen more often whenever I used aMule, a Java-based P2P program. But last time, I am pretty sure (but not certain) that no Java application was started.
Any ideas? Can you suggest some advanced troubleshooting techniques? Thanks.

Try setting your system so that it doesn't go in to
auto sleep and stays on at all times. I've heard a
few people complain about something similar to what
you're describing (not being able to wake a system
    up).
Sorry, I thought that was clear: The computer NEVER goes to sleep. It's set to always stay on, and it does.
I would suggest booting up from your system dvd
as previously mentioned and run a hardware test on
    it...
I will try that, but I am doubtful it will reveal anything. The computer can work just fine for many days, then suddenly die.
and while you're in there I'd probably repair
    permissions too.
    Done. Many times.
Have you added anything to your Mini?
Well, yes of course. Let's see:
    - USB hub
    - 1 GB RAM expansion (tested thoroughly with memtest)
    - Logitech USB Dekstop microphone
    - Palm USB-Serial adapter
    - Dock for Casio ZX750 camera
    - APC UPS
    - FireWire hub
    - FireWire enclosure with two 320 GB drives
    - Speakers, USB keyboard and mouse (none of them Apple)
    - SMC Barricade wireless router connected via Ethernet

  • Computer Frozen with 10.6.3 Update?

I just tried updating my Mac to 10.6.3 and I think the computer may be frozen. It is just stuck on a black screen. How long do I wait. Should I do anything else? The screen is on and I can feel/hear the drive spinning, but it does not appear to be doing anything. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    HI,
Press the power button down until the screen goes black. Then go to the Apple Menu and click Restart. If your Mac won't boot to the Desktop, hold down the power button again until it shuts off.
You need to boot from your install disc to Verify and if necessary, repair the startup disk.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode and run Disk Utility from there. It's in the Applications/Utilities folder. You can verify the startup disk for errors in Safe Mode but you can't repair it.
If you can get your Mac to startup normally, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Can a PC infected with virus make breaches if Time Capsule firewall?

    Hello!
Recently had my PC (not mac) infected with virus. Is there a possibility that viruses can make changes to Time Capsuel settings andmake breaches in Time Capsuel firewall?
For example set port mapping via UPnP  for viral activity on TC or something like that? I'm not very fond of network technologies - but know that some programs can set routing ports on their own. Or am I mistaken?
Maybe it is worth to make a full reset for TC? I dont know.

But any bother needs open ports to be able to use planted virus behind the firewall, right?
This will not happen very often.. NAT is a not strictly a firewall. It can be broken under pretty intensive attack but still seldom happens. The virus gets into the computer via YOU.. you browse to a compromised website or download an infected application or email etc. The vast majority of infected computers cannot actually be prevented by firewalls.. unless as John pointed out, you cut yourself off from the internet. The internet is out there and for you to gain access to it, to some degree it has to have some access to you. But YOU are the one who infects the computer in 99% of cases.
Once infected the computer on a LAN can infect other computers on the LAN.. because people do not password their shares. There is little protection. And from inside the LAN the virus can then call home. It does not do anything to the router. Because you have to have the ability to open ports from the LAN side the virus can take advantage of that.
Note in a business with a strong firewall, only a very limited number of ports are available. And there is a lot more effort put into virus checking. For home system.. just NAT and NOT downloading suspect apps and emails will keep you pretty clear of problems with the need for a decent AV for the occasional mistake.
Do not torrent, do not use USENET, do not go to Warez and suspect places. Download Prawn and you will have your computer loaded with viruses in no time. It is free and available but has a big sting in the tail.
If you want to do all those things.. well plan on getting infected pretty often and use the computer in proper DMZ and wipe it pretty often.

  • Brand new Ipod touch bought yesterday - Screen is frozen with an itunes emblem and cable. Unable to refresh or restore ipod. Computer and itunes does not recognize ipod.

This is first Ipod for me  - I have had less than one day. Screen is frozen with itunes emblem and cable. Unable to refresh/restore or do anything with ipod. I turn off/on and get the same frozen screen. My computer does not recognize ipod. Itunes does not recognize ipod so I cannot restore.... Should I take this ipod back and get a new one? Is this normal?

Before you can use the iPod you have to activate it by connecting it to a computer with iTunes.  Try the following to get your computer to see the iPod so you can activate the iPod.

I was updateing the software on my ipod through the wireless straight to the ipod and had to stop so held down both the power and the home buttons. Now the screen is frozen with the apple logo and the normal 'unfreeze' technique won't work. The computer does not recognise the ipod so will not charge or restore it. Unplug it and let unit go dead. Then hold your Home button down and plug the USB power cord back in. iTunes should see it and then restore.

  • Will I also get virus on my iPhone if I sync it with a computer with virus

I am disinclined to test the sync application of my iPhone and iTunes for the reason that I knew my laptop contains viruses. If I sync my iPhone to my laptop for the first time will my iPhone also can be affected with virus? Thanks in advance for those who can help me. =) May I request that at least you can share thoughts that has less technical terms. =P Thank you very much!

It's not very likely. Viruses have to be designed for specific operating systems. Your computer's operating system is Windows (I'm assuming) and your phone runs on iOS, a completely different system, so anything that affects windows will not be able to transfer to iOS.
Now if the music files you ahve on your computer are corrupted in some way they may not transfer or play properly on the iphone, but even if that has some effect other than making the songs not play, that shouldn't do any damage that taking the music off the phone won't fix.

  • IPod touch screen frozen with computer cable and iTunes sign

My iPod touch is frozen with a computer cable and iTunes disc sign on the screen. I have tried to restart it but it has not gone away. Any suggestions as to what it may be or how to fix it?

Called Apple tech help - no freaking use!!! So I read a few posts and amongst others under help in itunes, I ran diagnostics and there was a link when the ipod was not recognized that discussed clearing temp files, etc. I did that, messed with MS Config to disable conflicting programs and some other stuff related to clearing temp files from installation of software. Eventually, I removed all apple software - itunes, helper, bonjour, mobile me etc and reloaded itunes. Did another reboot and this time it worked.
Now, this is the second time I have updated software and each time it it really sucky. I thought Macs were supposed to be better than PC's (;-) well they sure are NOT. I can download and update anything else with no probs but an ipod.
ipod touch is cool as it has internet access but stupid as an MP3 player as there is no radio and no decent equalizer. Sony kisses ipod butt regarding sound quality

  • Windows 7 X201 - suspect plagued with viruses - what to do?

Apologies if I'm in the wrong place...
I have an X201 and suspect I'm plagued with viruses, but still have a functional computer.
I don't know if I should do the virus scans -- from my experience the viruses protect themselves and prevent scans from finding and deactivating them.-- or pursue an entire system reinstall?
And if I were to do that, how would I prevent viruses from coming along?
I would really appreciate some help before I get frozen up and totally disfunctional and have to start working off my Mac Powerbook -- which is not like the tank of x201 or even close.

    Welcome to Lenovo Community
From your brief description, I have a feeling that you may be infected by one of the rogues that is giving you a fake alert. Is it claiming to be Microsoft Security Essentials that is giving you this alert?
Let's see if we can get you started...
Please download Rkill by Grinler from here Rkill and save it to your Desktop (or to a CD or USB Stick and transfer it to the Desktop) of the infected computer.  If that does not work try this alternate Link
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Rogue programs.
Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that rkill is an infection, please ignore it, and run rkill.com again. This message is just a fake warning given by the malware when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it.
Therefore, please run rkill quite a few times until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the instructions below.
*NOTE: A log pops up at the end of the run. This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. You can close this log when you wish.
Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    On the Scanner tab:
Back at the main Scanner screen:
If using Vista or Windows 7, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Then click Finish.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
    manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.
**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE==================================

I have another computer that a virus may have taken over and I cannot log into it anymore.  I just downloaded Itunes on a new computer but most of my songs are not on there.  Is there a way to still access or find those songs?  Remotely or another way?  Or do I need to take it to a tech to get my files off of my hard drive?

Edit > Preferences > Store check Music under Automatic Downloads.
Open the iTunes Store from left hand column, then select Purchasedfrom the column on the right, click the Not In My Library button and select the tunes you want to download again.
That said, you seem to be under a misapprehension as to how iTunes works, or at least how it has worked in the past. It has, until recently, been up to you take care of your purchases once they have been downloaded. You had a one-time download which you were reminded to back up. With the recent change to this policy you can at least download your store purchases again, but having a personal backup of your iTunes store purchases, stuff purchased elsewhere and files ripped from your CDs will still be preferable to gathering all the stuff together again in the event of a disaster.
For a backup strategy see this User Tip.
