Safari stopped saving passwords
I deleted an an entry from my sav password list because I was changing to a new password. Now Safari is not asking to save the new password. I tried quiting then reopenning Safari and logging on and off the site several times, but I still can not save the password.
If I can't get Safari to save it, is there a safe 3rd party program or App I can have on my MACs to store and enter IDs and passwords?
If Safari doesn’t ask whether you want to save your user name and password, choose Safari > Preferences, click AutoFill, and turn on “User names and passwords.
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11897
Sometimes unchecking and rechecking the preference setting restores the default.

Safari not saving passwords in keychain
All of a sudden Safari stopped saving my usernames and passwords. It asks, and I say yes. But it doesn't save anything. HELP!
Launch Keychain Access in /Applications/Utilities/, select Keychain First Aid, and repair the login.keychain. Details in KA's help files.

hi
i was wondering if any faced this same problem whereby Safari just doesn't remember the passwords anymore?
under safari > preferences > autofill > i have everything checked, incl users name and passwords
however, when i navigate to a website with a username/email and password to be entered, the email/username autofills, but NOT the password.
(i have been to this site, entered the password, and saved before)
however, when i type in the same password, safari says, "this password is different ... would you like to save"
of cos i do instead of "not now" or "never" but it just happenss time and time again
i have tried to "remove all" usernames and password from preferences > autofill but it didnt help
please help... its irritating me and firefox now seeems a SMARTER alternative. Thanks, but private browsing isn't enabled. At first I thought it was a .mac sync issue, but creating a clean account on the laptop (not really a PowerBook as I said, in the first post, but a new MBP), had essentially the same problem. Saved passwords wouldn't stick. This isn't an issue on my iMac running Leopard 10.5.1.
I've tinkered a little further, and I can delete the entries from the keychain and copy in a new entry from a clean keychain imported from the iMac (using file copy, instead of .mac sync). That will load and retain the passwords properly, but then I discover new wrinkle to this problem. Safari can no longer keep track of passwords for multiple usernames for the site. My wife and I have different usernames for webmail sites. It won't retain separate passwords for each username.
No third party extensions/hacks. Again, this was a pristine system. Several people seem to have similar problems, so I'm hoping Apple's working on it. -
Firefox stopped saving passwords for any site !!
for all sites i joine it stopped asking to save password
so every day i join i need to type it all the day long* Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) [[Private Browsing]] mode.
* In Private Browsing mode some menu items are disabled (grayed) and features like saving new passwords are disabled.
* You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing", possibly grayed.
* You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
* To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
* Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"
* Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
* You need an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep that cookie, especially for secure websites and if you let cookies expire when Firefox closes
* In [[Private Browsing]] mode all cookies are session cookies that expire if that session is ended.
* Make sure that you do not use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and password exceptions. -
When I go into Safari -- Preferences -- Passwords, there is a website/username/password that I don't recognize. Myself and my husband are the only ones that use my computer.
The website is listed as "--https" with a username that ends in @type1 (I don't know what that is) and an odd password. Can I delete this? Where did this come from?Make sure you have inadvertently turned on private browsing on your phone. It will not sync iCloud tabs if private browsing is turned on. There are some other troubleshooting steps you can look through here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5372.

When I first use a password to log into a site, Safari asks me if I'd like to save the password, and gives 3 options - yes, never or later (or something like that). I have some sites which I selected the later option, but now it doesn't ask me again. So how do I change my mind and save my password in sites which I didn't choose to save them in the first place, IYKWIM
Use LastPass instead -- it'll give you secure access to (and use of) your passwords on any device. I use it on my Macs, my Linux boxes, my VMs, and my Android phone. It's great!

Safari stopped suggesting passwords
iMac late 2012
OS X 10.9.4
Safari Version 7.0.5 (9537.77.4)
Inconsistent, not each time, but I need that function to work--
Any ideas? I looked over the earlier posts about similar problems but nothing was quite the same as my case.
Thanks--Back up all data. Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device. Test.

Why did safari stop saving history-bookmarks?
When I open history in Safari, I see only up to end of August (this is Sept. 18). Also, if I add a bookmark it stays during the session, but does no persist across close and open of Safari. I did not change safari preferences. I am running OS 10.7.1 on a macbookPro. I can't recall any changes I made on Sept. 1 - maybe a software update. Are there any similar problems or possible fixes?
I see only up to end of August (this is Sept. 18)
Go to Safari / Preferences - General
You may need click the pop up menu to reset where you see: Remove history items
For the bookmark issue, could be a corrupted preference (.plist) file.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) character represents your Home folder.
For LIon: To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library -
settings were not changed, but browser stopped saving passwords. save password setting is checked but it still won't save. can this be corrected?
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.
To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
*Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

I have been infected by trove adware, I was able to remove it, but I couldn't get default setting of safari and keeping bookmarks, saved passwords, ..etc
There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Trovi," "Conduit," or "SearchProtect" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove these files in the same way:
~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/searchplugins/MyBrand.xml
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/External Extensions/fjadmdmahkpbhgbmmkiiaanlnlekelmn.json
~/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}/[email protected]
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
"SearchProtect" may be distributed along with two other applications: "MacKeeper," which is a scam, and "ZipCloud," which, if not actually a scam, has a dubious reputation. Ask if you need instructions to remove those items.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked. -
Safari 6 under Mountain Lion won't autofill saved passwords
All was well under Lion. As soon as I upgraded to Mountain Lion, Safari 6 stopped autofilling passwords. Usernames, just fine, but passwords would stay blank. If I manually type in my password, Safari prompts me saying:
This password is different. Would you like to replace the saved password with this one?
Whatever I type gets saved in the keychain (verified via Keychain Access look up) so Safari DOES have access to the keychain entry, but apparently write, only, not read.
If I open up a Keychain entry and modify its Access Control to "all applications" as opposed to a control list, it suddenly works. If I try to stay on a control list (for which Safari was already listed) and delete and re-add Safari, the behavior is still broken as above.
What's going on? Keychain First Aid doesn't remedy the problem, and other programs which access the keychain have no issues.Okay, lots of stuff to paste. In command order given:

Safari 6 and password saving. How do I turn it off?
How do you stop Safari 6 from saving passwords? I can't seem to find a setting to turn it off completely. Without the setting it bugs me every time I enter a username and password on a website. I don't want Safari to save my passwords and I don't want it to ever ask me to save passwords.
If there isn't a we to turn it off in the UI is there a terminal command to turn it off? It is extremely annoying.Same issue - for the most part I don't want Safari to save userId's or passwords. So the brute force will work. I would prefer the ability to specify just the VERY FEW sights I'd like saved. That is "Save ONLY these passwords"
Any chance the is a way to do thiw with Mountian Lion? -
Unable to view saved passwords in Safari. Again.
Unable to view saved passwords because I whenever I check the box to “view password” it immediately reverts the box back to being “unchecked”. Thus, I’m unable to view any or all passwords saved within Safari on my MBP (mid-2012) running 10.9.5. Also, auto-fill of passwords isn’t working at all.
This has been an ongoing problem for quite some now. I’ve fixed it somehow before but I can’t recall what it was that I did.
Any help?

SAFARI 6 WEBSITE SAVED PASSWORD NOT WORKING
after upgrading to Safari 6 a saved bookmarked website user name and password no longer works.
seems to be just for that site. went to preferences>passwords selected site but it won't 'remove'.
tried deleting and re-establishing the bookmarked site but no drop down to remember the user name and pw
appears. i see that others are having this problem. again, it seems that most of the sites are
acting as they did before the upgrade. i am using the last version of Lion before Mountain Lion
(which i can't install on my computer).Thank you for your reply
i need this because some websites opens with both options 'with and without www'
i have saved password for example.com but next time i open www.example.com coming from google or referral. i forget that i have account for example.com.
i have to check in password manager for accounts every time.
so thats why i want to save password for both www and without www.
sorry for my bad english -
Firefox has stopped saving my passwords, how can I get it to save passwords again?
I have enabled passwords in microsoft, it no longer asks to save them, And inexplicably, Firefox has stopped saving my passwords, and asking to save them. How can I reenable this?
Also make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.
*You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
*To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
* Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"
