Safe copying

Hello all.
I'm trying to create an application to produce arithmetic functions that use a generic Guess interface, but I'm not sure how to ensure that I have a "clean" Guess object for my calculations. A simple object reference could originate from a source I don't trust and therefore be attacked during the calculation. I'm therefore trying to work out if it's possible to make a defensive copy of an Interface class whose implementation I don't know.
I've settled on the idea of an abstract class that implements the Cloneable interface as well as Guess, with a 'protected final' clone() method that simply calls super.clone() (ie, Object's).
Is this sufficient, or will it simply return a binary copy of my abstract class whatever subclass it's called from because it's declared final? There seems to be very little info on the mechanics of the Cloneable interface and exactly how this works.
Alternatively, has anyone else run into this problem and, if so, how did you solve it?
Thanks in advance, and apologies to anyone who saw this before. I think I posted it under the wrong topic.

how a shallow copy addresses your
security concernsIt actually doesn't. For that I would have to copy the entire object tree generically (it can be done with reflection, but it's awfully tedious).
what 'a class written to
corrupt its user regardles of whether it's copied or
not' might be, or what 'would have to share any
damaging internals with every instance ever created'Any class can be made to corrupt a user by simply including references
to mutables which can then be changed by the cracker to affect behaviour. As you correctly point out, this can't be prevented by a shallow copy, only a deep one.
It sometimes happens by accident (eg, Date, which is why Calendar is now recommended), but if the source is trusted (as with Date) you can prevent a client from gaining access to your Date by simply copying it. Joshua Bloch talks about it in great detail in 'Effective Java',
including things like making sure you 'sanitize' BigIntegers and
BigDecimals to make sure they aren't some untrusted subclass.
but if you've got security concerns about an
externally derived class, a security manager and a
security policy for that codebase is the answer.I'll definitely give it a look. I think for the moment I'm simply going to keep things package-private, get the sucker developed, and then worry about how I can deploy it for others to add to.
Thanks very much for your comments.

  • How to make a safe copy of all mails or to export these?

Hello, I'n newbie on Mac OS X. I've been wondering how to make a safe copy of all mails in my inbox or to export all of them, like on Outlook with the function "Export". I don't find such function under MAIL. Can you please help me? Thanks
    Best regards.

    Hi
    Welcome to Mac Computing.
The folder holding your e-mail plus mailboxes etc. is located (via the Finder) in your User Account>Library>Mail folder. You can copy this folder to external media, such as another hard drive, or CD/DVD.
If you want to save specific e-mails, follow these directions from Mail's Help section (Help Menu):
    Exporting email messages:
You can save one or more messages as a separate file to archive messages or to import the contents into another application. You can open the saved message in TextEdit.
Open the message you want to export.
Choose File > Save As, and enter a name for the file.
Choose a location for the file from the Where pop-up menu.
Choose a format from the pop-up menu.
If you choose Rich Text Format, the text formatting of the message will be visible.
If you choose Plain Text, the colors, fonts, and other formatting will be lost.
If you choose Raw Message Source, the full delivery headers will be visible. If the message has attachments, you'll only see the encoded version of the attached files.
A Good way to familiarize yourself with OS X is to pick up a copy of Scott Kelby's book OS X Tiger: Killer Tips.

  • Yet AGAIN! "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto"

I have read every thread on this topic I could find in these forums, and tried most solutions, and I still can't get iPhoto to work.
Equipment:  MacBook Pro June 2010, OS 10.6.8.  Bought a Macbook Air February 2012, OS 10.7.2
Not sure why, but I can't open iPhoto.  Here's what I have tried.
Original message on MBPro:  "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto".
    1.  Tried to rebuild library as per this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/8429269#8429269.  I get the list of checkboxes, but when I hit "okay" I get the same "you can't open your current photo library ..." message again.
    2.  Ran software update - no sign that iPhoto is out of date.
    3.  Copied new version of iPhoto from brand new MBAir to MBPro, replacing older version .  Got same "you can't open your current photo library ..." message again.
    4.  Tried to rebuild library using new version of iPhoto - guess what - same message.
    5.  Downloaded free trial version of iPhoto Library Manager as suggested in the thread referenced above.  The dmg loads to my desktop just fine but nothing happens when I click on it -- this has never happened before.  Perhaps it is looking for iPhoto, which of course I can't get to work.
So I have been unable to access my old iPhoto library with (sob) thousands and thousands of family photos in it.  I run TimeMachine on to an external hard drive every hour so I hope that if my iPhoto library is corrupted, there is a safe copy on that external drive ...
Between this hassle -- hours of time wasted -- and recent debacle of upgrading iTunes which erased my library and all of my playlists, which also took hours and hours to restore ... my 25 year devotion to Apple products is taking a major hit.  I'm getting very weary of heart-pounding fear every time a new software upgrade arrives ... but that's a topic for another time. ;-)
Thank you very much indeed for all suggestions.

I'm going to start from scratch as  the link you references is very, very old.
Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library and import some photos. If you are able to then the problem lies with your current library. If you get the same message then maybe the iPhoto application is the problem.
Try the following again:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy)  of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If all of these fail there's one more option:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the each subfolder in the Originals folder (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the entire Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries - HELP or my wife may kill me!!!

    Greetings,
I read Old Toads article on switching Libraries and I thought I would try it out. I copied the current library to an exteral drive (Apple + D) so I would have a safe copy.
Then I made another copy of that so I would have my current library, a back up library and the library I was going to work on.
The libraries all had a size of approx 68GB. So, I cut the test library down to photos from 2008 (still over 6000 photos) and closed iphoto.
When I opened it back up using the (apple key to select the original library from my main drive, it loads only the 6000 pictures from 2008. Where did the rest of the images go? Any of the libraries I open now only show the photos from 2008.
The library sizes on my external drive all say 68GB but the library on my main drive only shows as 30GB.
So, I think the photos are all still there but I can't find them...
PLEASE Help or I am a dead man!!!

I read Old Toads article on switching Libraries and I thought I would try it out. I copied the current library to an exteral drive (Apple + D) so I would have a safe copy.
Command (apple) D duplicates a file (or folder) - it does not move it - how did you move the copy to teh external drive?
Then I made another copy of that so I would have my current library, a back up library and the library I was going to work on.
The libraries all had a size of approx 68GB. So, I cut the test library down to photos from 2008 (still over 6000 photos) and closed iphoto.
I'm assuming that you did this using iPhoto - is that correct?
When I opened it back up using the (apple key to select the original library from my main drive, it loads only the 6000 pictures from 2008. Where did the rest of the images go? Any of the libraries I open now only show the photos from 2008.
You do not switch libraries by using the command (Apple) key - you switch by depressing the option key while launching iPhoto - is this what you did to switch libraries?
I'm thinking that you may just be opening the cut down library over and over and not switching to the back up libraries
The library sizes on my external drive all say 68GB but the library on my main drive only shows as 30GB.
So, I think the photos are all still there but I can't find them...
PLEASE Help or I am a dead man!!!
Depress the option (alt) key and launch iPhoto and try each of the three libraries that you see as options in the select libraries function

    Hello SMEvans32
You can use iCloud to share the Calendar, that way she will always be up to date on that particular section of your work calendar. If you want to use iCloud, I would recommend backing up so you have a safe copy of your data.

  • I am trying to find out how to sync my outlook calendar, which is my default calendar, with my gmail calendar so that I can share it with my wife so she knows when I am going to be out of town for work.

My primary calendar that I use on my iPhone 5 is my outlook calendar.  In the past, on other phones, I would sync this with my gmail calendar so that I could share it with my wife so that she would know when I am out of town for work.  Any suggestions for doing this or is there a better method to accomplish the same thing?

  • How to save a complete book in iphoto to CD or external backup???

I completed a book in iphoto. Is there any way to save the book to CD or to a backup minicruiser for example, just to have a safe copy of it. All I see on back up on the drop down is to send to iMac. Is this the only way to do it? Which means you have to subscribe to iLife??
Am I overlooking some simple solution here??
    Thank you.
    Joanne

No, saving the entire library minus the photos that are not in the book, is the only way to archive the book for later use or orders. If you just want to save the pages of the book as they will be printed do a Print->Save as PDF->Send PDF to iPhoto. That will create a jpg image of each page of the book and your can title them page 1 thru page xx to a folder on the desktop using the option to make the file name the same as the title. Then burn the folder to a CD and you have your book's pages as jpg files safe and sound.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Some songs suddenly won't play, import or convert!

I recently transfered my mp3's from my PC to my Mac with my USB disk. I also transfered the Album Art folder and the two iTunes Library files, so I can keep the "Date Added" and other personal preferences.
Now, however, I cannot play certain songs that I've ripped from CD's. When I click the file in iTunes, it simply does nothing (apart from showing the small Apple logo in the little screen at the top). I also tried to play the same songs on my PC, and suprisingly, they do not play there either. I have played these songs before - many times, and have never come across any issues. Most are ripped in late-June and July from my PC, so not that recent. Others ripped after that - work.
I have the latest version of iTunes on my Mac, but not on the PC (7.2.0.35). They play in QuickTime, Windows Media Player and whatnot, so I believe that the problem is with iTunes.
When I try to re-import them to my library - they do not import. When I try to convert them to mp3 with iTunes - I get an "unknown error (-50)" message. When I "Get Info" about them, they show up fine, apart from that in the Summary tab, the whole right column of information is not displayed (where it would say Format, Channels, ID3 Tag, Encoded with). It is however identified as an MPEG audio file, of a certain bit rate, sample rate etc., and even it's play count remains.
I had a few old saves of my iTunes Library, so I tried re-importing the songs with those - no success.
I have no way of knowing which songs are unplayable in this way, because no "exclamation mark" thing appears and they are simply skipped in random play or party shuffle and playlists.
Also, when the song is selected, and the album artwork box in the bottom-left corner is open - it displays "Album Artwork Not Modifiable" for these unplayable songs.
I hope you can help! Thanks in advance

I have had the same problem, and managed to solve it this evening. This solution works on a PC, so if you also have a Mac you'll need to copy the repaired tracks across somehow.
The cause of the problem is faulty ID3 tags - the area inside the MP3 file where metadata such as artist name, album title and cover art are stored. iTunes has known issues with the insertion of cover art into ID3 tags, and given that you and I have both noticed the unreadable/unmodifiable album art, I suspect this is where the problem lies. iTunes appears to have broken the files sufficiently that I couldn't get them to play in any music playing software, or on my iPod itself. On the iPod, each song is attempted for a couple of seconds and then skipped.
So much for the problem. Here is the solution:
What you will be doing is to strip out and then re-write all the ID3 tags. Note that I tried other software, which was meant to do exactly that, with no success. The program I ended up using had an option to rewrite MP3 tags, which also didn't work. The only successful method was to tell it to remove the tags altogether, and then tell it to re-write them from scratch. So here is the step-by-step method for fixing a single song, and then the shortcut for fixing the lot:
    1) Find and install a freeware program called "foobar2000". I got version 0.9.4.4. Other versions may have slightly different user interfaces. Although I could not find this download from my usual trusted download sites, I ran a spyware check afterwards and it was clean.
    2) Start foobar2000.
    3) Find one of your broken MP3s and drag-and-drop it into the foobar2000 window. You can drag it straight out of the iTunes window, rather than having to find the file on your hard drive. (NB if you're nervous, locate the file on the hard drive first and keep a safe copy while you do this.)
    4) In the foobar2000 window, right-click the file, and choose "Tagging... MP3 Tag Types..." from the context menu.
    5) Now untick ID3v1 and ID3v2, and choose "Update Files". This step strips out all the ID3 tags.
    6) Now go through the same menu options and tick ID3v1 and ID3v2 again, and choose "Update Files". You may find that ID3v2 is already ticked, which is fine. This step re-writes all the ID3 tags. In between Step 5 and Step 6, your ID3 tags are stored inside the foobar2000 program and nowhere else. Don't exit foobar2000 until you have re-written the tags. Re-writing seems very much faster than removing the tags.
    7) Finally, go into iTunes and double-click on the tune to make iTunes start playing it. It should now play fine! Moreover, iTunes will now notice that the ID3 tags have changed, and will queue the track for upload to your iPod at the next sync. No need to play the whole track. Just starting to play will work.
So far so good. One track converted. Pull up the foobar2000 window, left-click the song you fixed, and hit the delete key to remove it from the queue. Now for the shortcuts:
Album-at-a-time: Find a faulty album, select all the tracks in the iTunes window (click the first track, SHIFT-click the last). Drag and drop them into the foobar2000 window. Use CTRL-A to select all the tracks in the foobar2000 window. Do steps 4-6 above. Do step 7 above for each song, or just start playing the first track in iTunes and repeatedly click "fast forward" to skip through the rest.
Many albums at a time: As above, just drag and drop several albums, one after the other, into the foobar2000 window before you repair the tracks.
I suppose you could "repair" all the tracks in your iTunes, even if most of them are not broken. This way you wouldn't need to track down the broken ones... just use CTRL-A in iTunes to select the lot, and dump them into foobar2000. But I don't know how many tracks foobar2000 will handle. Try this at your own risk, but please report back if it works.
Also, note there is a quicker way of making iTunes realise that you have repaired the tracks. Instead of playing each track, just right-click, go to "Get Info", and go "OK" +without changing anything+. Note that this works for multiple songs in one go, if you select more than one song. I repaired about 1000 songs, and then in iTunes went CTRL-A (to select all), "Get Info" and "OK", and it happily re-read all my ID3 tags in a minute or so, thereby covering all 1000 that I had repaired, and marking them for syncing. Note that any changes you do make in the Get Info window will be put through onto every single track you have selected. So just hit OK, nothing else!
Now just plug in the iPod and wait for it to sync, and you're done.
Finally, you may notice that some of your album art is now missing. This is the price you pay, unfortunately. The art was the problem in the first place, and was not salvageable. This way at least you quickly and easily get your music back, and retain all your tagging and playing info.
Sorry for such a long post. It took me a while to figure out, and I know a lot of people will be looking for this very answer.
    Good luck!
PS there is a third type of tag called APEv2. A very few of my tracks had this, and because I was repairing hundreds of tracks at a time, I don't know which ones. I just left the APEv2 box untouched, but I don't know if that's sensible. Anybody care to report back?

  • Are there any Outlook Email Sync Tools Available f...

Hi, I've had the n900 for a while now, bit peeved with it, was sold as having proper tbt gps etc, that's another story I guess and one which is well documented elsewhere . Only getting round to setting up my email sync now and guess what, it doesn't work!! You don't seem to be able to sync emails between Outlook and the n900, not using PC Suite or OVI suite from what I can see. My work domain and mail is hosted on gmail, I leave a copy of the messages on the server so I can get in Outlook and on the device. Sometimes when I read a message, or reply to a message on the n900 it will never come through to Outlook, even though a copy is being left on the server. it would be nice if a sync tool was available for this, anyone know of any?
    Thanks
    Eamonn

you have a couple of options.
first, you have to know that ALL messages you send from your n900 do not get put on the server, but are actually in your "sent" folder on you n900.   so you will need to open that folder, and select all, then move to a folder on your server.....should you be using imap.
next.   i would recommend that you set up your email as imap.  it is similar to using MS exchange except that it is free, it does not sync your contacts, it does not sync you calendar.  but works great.  you will be able to see all your folders on your gmail account and even be able to transfer all your sent email on you n900 to your sent email on your gmail account.
i would stay away from OVI suite as it will just make a mess.   with the n900, it is not necessary to have anything sync with outlook, except your contacts, notes, calendar.  so use PC Suite instead as it works solid!
now, since you are new, there is a way to make your n900 email work much faster and smoother as well.
first, install these repositories to your n900 for future use.  just click on the links within the browser of your n900 and they will auto-install for you.
    EXTRAS-TESTING
    EXTRAS-DEVEL
now open your appmanager and install rootsh.  (this will help you for later as you read in this forum...at least for things that CPitchford and Ceroberts75 post)
now, here are directions to make your email client work much faster.  since i cannot attach a .tar file to this, if you send me a pm, i will send you a link to download a safe copy of it for you to use.
save the .tar file to root folder (your root folder is going to be n900 or whatever you named your unit)
    open xterm
    sudo gainroot
    cd MyDocs
    to install, use this code:
    tar xzf modest-3.4.2-baxyp-1.tar.gz  -C /
NOTE:  There are 2 spaces after the ".gz" and 1 space after the "-C"
it will just do an immediate prompt again, and seem like nothing happened, but it did.
to uninstall and go to original settings, use this code:
    apt-get --reinstall install libtinymail-camel-1.0-0 modest
now for the Nokia Messaging:  i started a thread for this Nokia Messaging.   Nokia messaging will auto-sync all your email like stated above, but there are different limitations to alerts and such on the n900 and if you only have a few email addresses, imo, it is better to just set them up in the modest email client (standard email installed).  it will also save a few taps everytime you have to see the email.
    FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS:
with symbian, you just need to go to email.nokia.com and install it.
but...on maemo, it is built in.
    open email client
    menu
    new account
next (wait for it to search)
    choose your region
    service provider:  Nokia Messaging
    next
e-mail address: (to the nokia messaging account you have for login)
password: (to the nokia messaging account you have for login)
    next
it will search...and probably have an error with server and then ask to have you put in all the advanced information.  use this information below:
    email address:
    your nokia messaging login email
    incoming:
    mail.nokia.com
    143
    outgoing:
    mail.nokia.com
    587
    with no securities used.
    next
this should do it and then you will see it start to sync.
then you can go into the settings of nokia messaging and set up the sync settings and times.
now when you open your email client, you will see "Nokia Messaging"
when you tap on that, you will now see all the email addresses you have set up for nokia messaging.
you can add up to 10 email addresses on the nokia messaging....and i am currently using 6 on my integrated email client...so you can have at least 16 email address on your n900 now, probably up to 20.

  • IMAP and backing up

I use IMAP through my hosting services and want to achieve the following after a slight hiccup. One of the accounts needed to have my business partner access it from his home using a POP mailbox. Now this account only carried about 20 emails that were not important as its a general 'info @' address and carries no sensitive content.
Whilst setting up his access over the phone he inadvertently did a send and receive prior to filling in the check box that says "Leave copy of messages on the server".....You've guessed it .....it cleared them.
Now, so as not to ever come near to this situation again, I want to duplicate / copy all my IMAP mailboxes and the content to my Mac I have at home.
In the open Mail programme I have a folder that is titled 'ON MY MAC' and there resides several folders that I have created over time in which I drag an email I want to keep and file accordingly.
Now I want to copy an entire mail box that is accessed via IMAP that I see on my screen and duplicate it on the Mac for archive and safety reasons. When I right click on the respective mailbox called FZZ for example is see dialogue saying "Export Mailbox".
The named mailbox FZZ has within it about 15 folders that have different titles to which I drag / move an email to classify. If I select the main folder titled FZZ and select "Export"will it copy all the folders contained within as well?
Do I get an option to decide where to save it.?
I want it to appear in Mail under the 'ON MY MAC' in tact as it appears as a Mailbox in IMAP so if for any reason things go titssup I will have a safe copy.
Is there a a way in which I can automate........I receive an email in to an IMAP mailbox and it duplicates in a duplicate folder ON MY MAC.
    Thoughts very much appreciated,

    Hi,
    Am I asking for trouble?
Always nice to have a Backup in a couple of places.
Is there a way I can download and save it all, without deleting it from the server?
It should already be downloaded AND on the Server, if you can read it when your offline, then you have it.
Second question; should I move my account to a different host, would I loose IMAP access to the 6 year archive of email?
Yes & no, You'll no longer be able to access what is on the server, but the ones you have should remain if you don't delete that account in Mail.
To back up what you have already...
    On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    For Address Book...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/
Move or copy those .zip files to a safe place or 2.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot up - i have tried a few steps and still no luck

I have MCP late 2011 - running the latest Mountain Lion.  I just had it at the apple store a few weeks ago for a routine checkup.  Everything was fine.
I was using it last night and it locked up.  I did a hard restart, got the startup chime, then the gear spinning, then shortly after the pointer appears.  It turns to the pinwheel and sits forever.  the white screen dims to a 'dirty white/brown' color and it will just stay like this.
I restart and enter safe boot.  During the startup - I see the progress bar and it gets about 1/3 complete then the screen changes and the safe boot login page appears.  I am the only user, along with the guest option.  If I select my profile and password the gear will just spin forever and the pinwheel returns again.  Nothing happens.  If I select guest-- it will work.
Using guest - I used the disk utility.  I repaired the disk - and it says everything is ok.  I also repaired the disk permissions.  It found a lot of problems with itunes and extensions from that.  It states all have been repaired, however if I restart and then rerun the disk utility: it catches the same permission errors... like it never was repaired.
I also tried the FSCK  after the command S startup ... it says it all was good but no change.
So -  is it a problem with my profile?  What am I missing?  Is it the HDD?  Is it the OSX?  I travel extensively and I used my timemachine before I departed.  I keep that at home as a safe copy... but now I am on the other side of the world!!  AGHH!
This machine is still covered under applecare... until march.    Help!?
    Thanks -  JC

    Hello Jaycakes
The next thing to try is to reinstall OS X Mountain Lion, check out the articles below for further troubleshooting.

  • Can apple erase a hard drive with filevault 2 turned on and then reinstall OSX?

Can I take my MacBook Pro to an apple store and have them erase the hard drive and reinstall OSX? If so how much will that cost me?

I believe that's pretty much your only recourse if you forget the password and didn't write down the recovery key or choose to store it with Apple.
If you chose to store it with Apple, you can have them retrieve it for you if you answer the three security questions.
Really, with FileVault, the recovery key is crucial. You MUST keep a safe copy of it.

  • I want pictures from each device in the cloud, but not on every other device. Possible? "iCloud Backup" alone doesn't seem to work....

My goal is to acheive 3 of the following things.:
Have all my apple devices sync pictures to the icloud *without* syncing the pictures on all the devices...so just one direction from device to cloud and not have all the devices insync from the cloud...... I don't want all the devices in sync, I just want the pictures protected in the cloud. To do this, I've tried to just turn on "icloud bacn-up" and not turn on "photo stream" to acheive this, but doesn't seem to work.
If #1 is possible, then I would like to sync the icloud with a folder on my PC using the icloud app for the PC. Not sure if I can have only the icloud PC sync and not have all the devices in sync?
If #1 and #2 could work, then I would sync the PC folder with my local storge.
end result would be all my photos save in the cloud and a safe copy my home in my local storage. I would have thought that most people would want to do this, but doens't seem so obvious to me as to how I can get it to work?
    Any help would be appreicated.
    thanks

You can't use iCloud as a safe place to store your photos when they are deleted from your devices.  iCloud designed to stream photos to your devices, and to back up photos currently on your your devices as part of your iCloud backups.  However, photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days, giving your devices enough time to download them.  And if you delete a photo stream photo from any of your devices, it is also deleted from iCloud and from all of your devices.  Furthermore, while camera roll photos are included in your backup, if you then delete the photos from your device and continue backing up, the backup containing the deleted photos will be overwritten by one that doesn't, and they will be lost.
If you want to save your photos, import them from the camera roll to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  Then you can delete them from your device.
If you would rather have a cloud-based place to store your photos, look into a service such as Dropbox.

  • Can I add the iTunes Music Library (old) to iTunes Music Library?

Hi, I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend and I don't want to give her incorrect advice ... She has an Intel G5 iMac running 10.5.8 and iTunes 9.0 (she has downloaded but not installed the iTUnes 9.1 update).
Her problem is that she has deleted certain songs from her 'Jane Doe's iPod Playlist' so that she didn't have those songs on her iPod - I don't know the method she used to do this, nor does she. However, it has resulted in those songs now not showing up in the iTunes music library on her computer. There's just an exclamation mark and a dialog box asking if she would like to locate the songs.
She asked me to help her out and I discovered that all these songs (there are dozens- more than a hundred - of them) are still on her computer in a folder called 'iTunes Music old' - this is a sub-folder of the iTUnes Music folder where the path is Music - iTunes - iTunes Music.
    My question is this -
Is it possible to select all the albums in this 'iTUnes Music old' folder and simply drag and drop it onto the iTunes Music folder (after making sure that the location I'm dragging and dropping to corresponds to the location for her library as specified on the advanced tab of preferences) so that the songs will be back in the default library?
It seems to me that it should work but I don't want to be responsible for the person who loses all her music for her if it doesn't.
I would really appreciate someone who knows their way around iTUnes telling me the best way to sort her music and whether or not she should install the 9.1 update before or after reorganising the library.
    Cheers
    Tricia

If you're seeing the , that's generally an indication that media files (the mp3 or m4a, etc., files) were moved using Finder. They were moved or removed and the iTunes library wasn't able to keep track of where they went. If this is an old machine that she's messed around with, it can be a bit of a crap shoot trying to figure out where the stuff should go (iTunes is quite unhelpful in telling you where the music for the broken links was expected to be ... you can take some guesses, but iTunes 9 and iTunes 8 use different folder structures, so getting the stuff in the right place can be a nuisance).
Surprisingly complicated question. If you were confident of where the music files should go, you could try moving them (safer, copy them) to your current iTunes media folder and if you drop them in the exact same spot they were before, your broken links problem will be solved. It's a long shot, though.
There are apps out there for rebuilding libraries, but if you don't have extensive playlists that would take forever to rebuild (or you don't have lots of ratings or things like that which you are trying to preserve), I'd personally be inclined to rebuild her library from scratch by:
Create a new library by pressing and holding down the option button while you start iTunes, keep holding the button down until it prompts you to create a new library.
Go into the "Advanced" section of the "Preferences" screen and tell iTunes to (a) keep your folder organized and (b) to copy music to the new media folder.
Use the "Add Folder to Library" command on the "File" menu to add the music to your iTunes Library. This will copy the music to the new folder you specified in the previous step. Repeat this for her old iTunes folders (sounds like she might have it in different areas). Nice thing is, you can select some common parent folder (e.g. your parent "music" folder) and you'll only have to do this once.
Once iTunes is done copying music to the new media folder and has rebuilt the new library, you can clean up the old music media files that it sounds like are scattered about on her machine.
Again, I personally lean towards just rebuilding the iTunes library, allowing iTunes to organize the files like it wants, and then rebuild your playlists. But, if you'd rather try to repair her old library in situ, then you'll want to check out some of the apps designed for repairing broken links in libraries. Let us know if you want to do that and we can point you to some apps that might be able to help.
It seems to me that it should work but I don't want to be responsible for the person who loses all her music for her if it doesn't.
It's kind of hard to lose the music unless you do something nuts like drag stuff to the trash without making sure you've got a copy/backup somewhere. In fact, go ahead and have her back up her machine before you start. And when you're all done, and you've confirmed that everything is great, do another backup.
I would really appreciate someone who knows their way around iTUnes telling me the best way to sort her music and whether or not she should install the 9.1 update before or after reorganising the library.
Unless her version of iTunes is archaic (v7 or earlier), I'd suggest fixing her library first, and then doing the upgrade. Let's not add variables to the situation. Also, I don't know what the iTunes upgrade process would do with the broken links in her existing library.
Frankly, there are enough bugs/problems with 9.1, you might want to wait until 9.1.1 comes out anyway. I personally regret doing the 9.1 upgrade. It works, but I'm working around various bugs. And some people are having very serious problems. If you absolutely need 9.1 (e.g., iPad), you can do it and you'll probably be fine. But unless you need 9.1 for some reason, I'd wait for 9.1.1 release.

  • Mail server has just stopped working. No errors in any log. Help!

I am running OS X Server 3.0.2 on Mavericks 10.9.1. Today at around 14:30 my Mail server, which has been working fine for over a year and for nearly a month under Server 3.0.2 just stopped working! I have tried stopping and starting Mail in Server.app and via ServerAdmin but the servcies will not start... serveradmin claims that IMAP is running but that SMTP/SMTPD/Virus Scanner/SPAM filtering/Virus updating are not. I tried disabling the all the filtering services but to no avail. Even though it claims IMAP is running I cannot connect from any client...
I have rebooted the machine but this did not help. I have looked at all the logs (system, mail, dovecot, postfix, amavis) and theer are no suspicious messages in any of them!
I am out of ideas and my mail server is down which is very serious so if anyone has any ideas please pitch in.
    Thanks.

    My problems were:
    1.    Server.app shows the Mail service stuck in 'starting' status
    2.    serveradmin shows that IMAP is running but SMTPD, Spam filtering, Virus filtering and Virus updating were STOPPED.
    3.    No clients could connect to either IMAPS or SMTP.
    Diagnostics performed:
All the various messafge logs (system.log, Mail.log, mail-info.log mail-err.log, amavis.log) show no abnormal messages.
    DNS is working just fine.
In the end I did the following:
    1.    Stop all mail related services.
    2.    Make a safe copy of /Library/Server/Mail/Config
    3.    Restore the previous days version of /Library/Server/Mail/Config from backup.
    4.    Start the Mail service
And all was working again just fine.
I then did a file by file compare of all the configuration files between the workign and not working configurations and I found just the following two differences in postfix/main.cf:
    Not working:
    inet_interfaces = loopback-only
    smtpd_helo_required = no
    Working:
    inet_interfaces = all
    smtpd_helo_required = yes
I don't think the second difference is so critical but the first seems to break everything (not too surprising I guess). All the other files were identical.
So, the good news is that all is working again but the huge concern is why this change happenned, seemingly at random. My strong suspicion is that Server.app, at some point when I exited it havign made some minor change unrelated to mail decided to apply these incorrect changes to the Mail configuration. Why it would do this is beyond me. I think there are some subtle bugs in Server 3.0 (and maybe Server 2.2 as well)...
