Samsung Pro 840 SSD Dual Hard Drives - 2nd Hard Drive Not Seen

Hello all and thanks for taking the time to read this post and help out. For my christmas gift to myself, I purchased a brand new 2012 Mac Mini and upgraded the processor to 2.6. I then went online to NewEgg and purchased 2 Samsung Pro 840 256GB hard Drives. Finally I went over to iFixit and purchased the addtional SATA drive connector with their add a drive kit.
Pulled the Mac Mini apart following the instructions and added the second hard drive. I also removed the original 1TB drive so that I now had 2 Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD drives installed. Plugged in power, monitor, had my new bluetooth keyboard and was madly pressing command r. Turns out that bluetooth was not working for I went a purchased an additional keyboard at Best Buy. Plugged it in, used command r and it found the Apple servers and downloaded the OS. However, it only saw one drive.
After the install, still only saw one drive. The Primary. Opened the Mini up again, checked everything, reassembled, no dice. Pulled it apart a third time, and decided to change the secondard additional drive to the original 1 TB drive. So now I got a 256 SSD and a 1TB. Boot the OS, it sees the Hard Drive so I am thiking ok the SATA cable is fine.
Next day I take the second SSD and put it in my alienware computer. Windows sees the hard drive immediatly. So I am like Hmm. Hard Drive must work, SATA cable works, so why does Hard Drive and SATA cable not work together.
I posted to Samsung who said, well if widows sees the Hard Drive its not the Hard Drive. Contact Apple
I posted to iFixit and am waiting on a response.
I am posting here before I get on and call Apple. I am away on business till Friday anyway. Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

I guess Final Update. I switched the Hard Drives around. I put the First Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD as the Second Hard Drive. I then put the Second Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD as the Primary Drive. This time Disk Utility sees it but says there is an error. When I go to fix the error it flashed briefly does whatever and it is still red. Repeated 3 times.
I then took my other Samsung 830 256 GB SSD and what do you know, the same error. Disk Error. When I go to fix the error it flashed briefly does whatever and it is still red. Repeated 3 times. So I am thinking ***. I turn off my Alienware computer, install both the 830 and the 840 HDs and poof:
You can see that Windows 8 picked up both Samsung Drives. So I guess at this point the only thing to do is suck it up and have the MacMini Server that I am stuck with as opposed to the MacMini Server I bought.

From your statements above, it sounds like you never tried to burn a CD for at least the first year that you owned the laptop, as it had a one year warranty on it. While you might have used it frequently to install software,  play DVDs, Blu-Ray disks, etc, that's unclear from your statements. Nonetheless, it might just be dirty-dusty. So, before deleting-uninstalling any software, and given they're cheap, try a CD-DVD Cleaner Disk first and see if that resolves your problems.

• Early 2008 Mac Pro won't boot after installing 2nd DVD drive

All,
I purchased a Pioneer DVR-117D from Mac Sales and after installing it in my new refurbished 2008 Mac Pro it won't boot. My MP will boot if I remove the drive. According to the Mac Sales website this drive should work fine in my MP. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I literally just got my MP today and installed the drive. Is it the drive or the Mac Pro. Thank you all.

The drive was set to master, I switched it to CS before I left for work but haven't tried reinstalling it. I will try when I get back and let you know if it worked. Thank you again.

• External hard drive from older OSX not seen on new machine

My new mac doesn't see the external hard drive when plugged in. The hard drive was formated with an earlier version of OSX. The older machine died, (and I took it apart ) - I hadn't been able to burn CDs of my images in time.
Is this some sort of compatibility issue? Any suggestions on what to do will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds possible to me that the drive is inside a hard drive case that needs an updated firmware to be able to mount on a newer operating system. This started to be a problem with 10.3. Here's my FAQ regarding the issue:

• IPod recognized as disk drive by WinXP but not seen in iTunes or iUpdater

HELP!!
A few short weeks ago I was ecstatic when I received my new iPod video as a Christmas gift. Imagine my dismay as I have been trying to get the darn thing to connect to iTunes ever since!
I have gone through the Apple website troubleshooting, have spent HOURS with a MAC "genius" and we still can't figure out what's going on.
The device has been restored and iTunes/Updater have been removed and re-installed NUMEROUS times but still can't get my 30G iPod Video to register in iTunes. Apple swears it is my laptop. I've removed everything and re-installed from scratch so I find it hard to believe that it is just my PC.
When I plug it into my USB I get the "Do Not Disconnect" icon that just keeps flashing (guess I should be happy its not freezing anymore!). I can see it as my "E" (Removable Disk) Drive but can't find it with iTunes or iPod Updater (Oct05 and Nov05 versions). It does appear when connected to an Apple store MAC or the Apple store's PC...so maybe it is mine.....?
Any advice?
Thanks!

Maybe you solved this or not but I have a suggestion. If you have a PCMCIA slot try adding a usb 2.0 pcmcia card. I was having a world of troubles that have included one already returned 5G 60GB. It was rendered inoperative by a failed restore process. I assumed it was a defective ipod.
Receiving the new one last night it was showing similar behavior to the one I had to replace. I thought my laptop might be a factor. I was already using a compUSA usb 2/FW card with the ipod but after searching I found a post that warned that card is trouble. I just bought a HP USB 2 pcmcia card (US$39) and about 8 gigs of movies was just gulped down by my ipod in one sitting. With the compUSA card it would cough and choke on one movie sometimes.
Sorry for your troubles. Good luck.

I have beaten my head against the same brick wall, a few years ago now, with a MBP 3,1.
Replaced optical superdrive drive with HDD, and used external USB optical drive. I discovered that there was no way any bootable Windows CD/DVD would boot from the external burner. Tried Microsoft install disks, Paragon and Acronis. Also tried a different burner which was firewire or usb
I ended up putting the superdrive back in the MBP and all would boot again.
I have since heard that there are exceptions and ways round this, but you may be in same situation.
Windows is fussy about booting from external optical drives.

• What external drives work well with a late 2011 MacBook Pro?  I ask because I just found out the hard way that a Samsung EVO 840 does not.  Also should I avail myself of something that works with Thunderbolt or Firewire?

What external drives work well with a late 2011 MacBook Pro (I7, Lion OS) apart from my Kingston flash and USB drive, and the SD drives that I use in my cameras and recording devices?  I ask because I just found out the hard way that a Samsung EVO 840 does not.  Also, should I avail myself of something that works with the Thunderbolt or Firewire connections?  I'm looking to back up music and video files created and/or processed in Logic Pro and the Adobe Production Premium software suite (Premier Pro, After Effects, Audition, etc).

Hmm, not sure what problems you had installing this drive. The review here gives it good marks for Mac:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE1T0BW/produc t-reviews/B00E3W16OU
There does seem to be a lot of prep to make it work:
"1. Preparation to install your new shiny SSD
1.a You will need a migration tool (I used the Sabrent kit USB 3.0 to Sata that was suggested in these review) see link http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQJME7Y/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&p sc=1
1.b You will need to download a trim enabler (mid 2012 macbooks only support native trim with apple brand ssd's) I recommend going to cindori.org and downloading trim enabler version 3.xx. You can do this step before or after the OS migration
1.c You cannot use the Samsung SSD migration software *don't worry Mac has its own imaging/migration utility*"
Also in those reviews:
" Only down side when using this product in a Mac Mini is you will be required to download and install Trim Enabler so that your drive performs optimally on your Mac device. This is an Apple issue, not Samsung, but it is an extra step you will have to take after you install the hard drive, and any time you perform an OS upgrade." He rant's on.
Personally I only deal with OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/
They are very knowledgable and if there's a problem they will gladly take back the item. (Never happened to me yet - 8 years and counting).
Just upgraded my 13" MBP 2011 to 120 GB for $79. Adobe CS 6 opens in 3 seconds! Awesome!
When I was in Chicago I had a pro photographer for a client. She wound up with 4 internal drives in her Pro, 4 external drives and an dual array locked in a steel vault in the basement. All from OWC. OK she was a bit paranoid. Great client though.
As far as value for price:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MES3FH7500G/
500 GB for $130.
However as far as reliability is concerned:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/01/30/are-ssds-reliable/
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/173887-ssd-stress-testing-finds-intel-might -be-the-only-reliable-drive-manufacturer
So sudden power loss is an issue with SSDs.
Personally I'd go with a moderate sized SSD internally and a conventional external for backup. An array would be the most reliable.

HI, I HAVE A MacBook Pro 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5 AND I WAN'T TO UPGRADE THE HARD DRIVE UP TO 750GB AND ALSO THE RAM MEMORY TO 8GB. WHAT SPECIFIC MODEL OF HARD DRIVE AND RAM MEMORY SHOULD I BUY??? THANKS

No need to type in all caps - we HEAR you!
I would take a look at the internal drives offered by both Crucial (click the link "Internal Hard Drives Now Available") and OWC. I would stay away from Western Digital drives as they seem to have problems on a number of Mac models.
You can also shop for RAM at Crucial and OWC - just select the System Scanner tab at the Crucial website to find out which memory is right for your machine.

• 2nd hard drive in Satellite Pro P200

Hi everyone
I have a Satellite Pro P200.
Does anyone know where I can get a lead and a caddy to install a 2nd hard drive?

As far as I know your notebook can be upgraded with second HDD if SATA connector is available.
When you remove HDD cover for second HDD can you see it or not?
I have Satellite P200D with place for second HDD but there is no HDD SATA connector so upgrade is not possible.

• WinXP dual boot Solaris on 2nd hard drive problem...

Hi there ppl,
run into a bit of a prob with dual booting winxp and solaris. I have WinXP on 1st hard drive and Solaris on 2nd hard drive 2 (Solaris - partition 1 with slice 0 x86 active, DOS - partition 2 for installing linux later, DOS - partition 3 for fat32 file storage later).
I want to boot to Solaris on drive 2 from the WinXP boot loader on drive 1. Could somebody please tell me exactly how to do this as I've copied the bootsect.sun file from Solaris via floppy to the WinXP C:\ drive, and edited the WinXP boot loader to:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)C:\bootsect.sun="Solaris/x86"
and when I select to boot to Solaris I get:
Windows could not start because the following is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please reinstall a copy of the above file
WinXP still boots ok.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks already.

• MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 SSD Dual Drive Installation , i need to install ssd or hdd without removing my optical drive?

salam 3lykum,
my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 need to install SSD Dual Drive in the enclosure in the laptop, but without removing my optical drive? can one help me. and without cable sata to usb to use it external.

I only know of one 2 terabyte drive that will fit in a notebook - and it comes in an enclosure that you must disassemble to get to the drive -> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTSK4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=110YIC0GU53A7&coliid=I38PEBUNYX6OUM&psc=1.
HGST does make a 1.5 terabyte drive that would work quite well in your machine - the Travelstar 5K1500.

• *TERRIBLE* "Write" speeds w/2x Samsung 850 Pro Internal SSD (RAID-0).. HELP! ( pics)

http://imgur.com/a/5p05u
Hello.. I was really hoping somebody could help me out with this, as I'm pretty much starting to lose hope..
I've attached as many relative screenshots as possible, to make it easier to quickly see what's going on.
I've got 2x brand-new, Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD's installed inside my MacBook Pro.. One inside the hard-drive bay, and one inside the Optical Bay (SuperDrive Bay), using an OWC Data-Doubler..
I've got these drives configured using Disk Utility, into a RAID-0 striped configuration..
The drives are rated @:
Sequential Read: 550MB/s
Sequential Write: 520MB/s

So "theoretically", I should be achieving approximately close to double these speeds (since that's the basis behind RAID-0 configurations)
Both SSD's are connected internally via SATA-III (6Gigabit Link + 6Gigabit Negotiated Link Speed).. Both in the hard-drive bay, as well as in the Optical Bay (confirmed in pictures)..
I'm getting *EXCELLENT* "Read" Speeds, yet *HORRIBLE* "Write Speeds.. to the point that the RAID-0 software configuration is not even achieving *near* the "Write" Speed of even one of these drives.. let alone 2 of these drives in RAID-0..

I've tried contacting Samsung directly regarding this issue, but since they don't exactly get along with Apple, and even more-so, dislike anything that has to do with "RAID" configurations, I was left with practically no help on that end..
I've tried contacting Apple, who said that I'm pretty much on my own, in terms of support, since they don't exactly get along with Samsung either.. and don't provide much of any support whatsoever, when it comes to third-party, hardware components that are not upgraded directly through Apple themselves.. (aka no support for user-end personal upgrades)
Both of these drives are *Brand New* directly out-of-the-box, shipped from Amazon, as "new, un-opened" items..

I apologize in advance if there's a lot of pictures to go through, however, I know how much of a pain in the *** it can be to troubleshoot these sort of problems, let alone, try to help somebody else troubleshoot these problems while not physically being there in person.. I tried to provide the most comprehensive troubleshooting steps I've taken thus far, as to hopefully make this thread as fruitful as possible, and eliminate any unnecessary steps that have already been taken..
I've tried re-formatting and re-installing OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 several times now, hoping that maybe one of them would allow the RAID formation to work as it should, yet none so far have proven successful..
If you have any time to look through and read this thread, I can't tell you how appreciative I'd be for your help and any advice possible that you can give me.. I do large amounts of audio processing, producing, along with many other taxing system processes, so I'd really like to get this RAID-0 configuration working as it should be..
Please do not waste your time by bashing RAID-0 or writing an unhelpful, opinionated comment that does not move this process forward.. I understand the risks of RAID-0, I run daily backups, as well as having an Apple Time Capsule running in full-force, all day long.. My data is well backed-up, and I understand the risks.
If anybody has dealt with this sort of issue before, please, give me any advice that you can.. I tried to put in the most effort possible with uploading and embedding all of these photos, as to not waste your time and to hopefully make this troubleshooting process as smooth as possible
Thank you all so much in advance! :apple:

• My plan to get win7 on 2nd hard drive

Hi all,
I recently bought a new 15" MPB with an apple installed 128gb SSD drive.
My plan was to install a 2nd hard drive in the DVD spot, a 500gb with a 70ish GB win7 partition. I would like to use Win 7 for screencasting for windows tutorials and for Gaming...mostly for gaming
I thought, naively, that this would be a simple boot agent setup...boy was I wrong.
I have already installed the 500gb drive in the optibay, it is working fine
I did not realize that a macbook pro cannot boot to an external drive or dvd. I could be wrong here but all my research seems to indicate that it can't...using something like refit does not fix this problem
I tried going through the boot camp setup with my external dvd drive attached through USB...did not work
also tried a USB thumb drive...no dice
I'd like to avoid having win7 on my 128gb ssd as there is limited space
my current plan is this...if it doesn't make sense or seems wrong please let me know
put the dvd drive back in
make a bootcamp partition on the sad...maybe 35gbs
install win7
if thats working ok put the hard drive back in
use win clone to clone the bootcamp win7 to the hard drive
hopefully that will work...
I'm just not sure how I'm going to partition the drive
I would like a 100gb ntfs partition for windows
and the rest partitioned mac
looks like win clone can expand the image to the larger partition
ipartition seems like it would work for this, but not sure
any ideas on how I can make a ntfs partition on the internal?
can I partition the drive with a windows machine? maybe do the 400gb as exfat?
thanks

Get http://www.virtualbox.org/
It lets you setup your own Windows virtualized disk image anywhere you like it.  You'll still need to boot into Mac OS X, but it can run either seemlessly with Windows or full screen if you so desire.
As for booting externally, Mac OS X has no trouble booting on external drives on any MacBook Pro.  As for Boot Camp, check with the Boot Camp forum.
https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp
Note, when using external hard drive for anything but backup, how many copies you have of information that is both on the internal and external drive.
There should be at least two separate external copies of all your data somewhere in event one fails.

You could put your install disc on a USB Flash drive with Disk Utility. Also, here is the USB optical drive enclosure I bought. He raised the price a few bucks. Mine ran $10.00 with the shipping.
