Sans Digital iTunes Server and AppleTV

Hi All:
I am looking to get a Sans Digital MN2L NAS unit with a built-in iTunes server so that I can turn my computers off and still have access to an iTunes libary, but this brings up a few questions.
First will this work with my AppleTV?
Second are other people doing it and if so is it worth the money?
Third are there other products out there that do this?

Then I was looking to put these disks in in a RAID-) format and keep my master libary on my G5 and use rsync to keep the two libaries in sync.

You need to be very careful when assessing such claims as 'incorporates itunes server' or similar. The tv will only stream content from these devices when itunes is running on a mac/pc.

ITunes Server and Nas Sharing with Devices

Does anyone know how to copy files from a Nas Share in itunes to devices (iphone/ipad)? I have managed to set up itunes server on a QNap Nas. The music files appear in itunes and play but I can't seem to manage my music directly from the share. I'm guessing the same will apply to video too?

Windows 7 Pro (64-bit), iTunes 10 and AppleTV (160Gb)

I'm trying to move my iTunes collection to a PC running windows 7 pro (64bit) - a machine I'm happier to leave on 24/7 than my iMac.
I've a fresh install of windows and installed the latest 64-bit iTunes. However, the PC doesn't display the AppleTV under the devices options in the iTunes UI.
My iMac, connected alongside reports that it is there which suggests that the problem is not in my router etc. but just with the Windows PC config.
I would have thought that the likely candidates are Bonjour setup (which is just the default install from iTunes) or the OS firewall config.
Any ideas why this doesn't "just work" by default? Am I expected to manually revise the bonjour TCP/UDP setting in Windows personal firewall etc? Should I be re-installing Bonjour?
I've looked on the forum and there doesnt seem to be a definitive answer. Given I'm using a fresh install, I would have expected this to be more straight forward.

I can but fonts, bullets, etc will not properly embed unless I save my file as a postscript file and run Distiller. Distiller then allows me a pdf that I can send to the commercial printer. However, Distiller will not run if I use the Adobe PDF printer. Adobe no longer supports MS Publisher but there is a work around by saving publisher as a postscript file, then use Distiller I can send the newspaper to a commercial printer. My concern is that if I upgrade to Adobe XI standard or pro will I be able to use this work around? This has taken me hours to figure out and now that I have the program working with Acrobat 9 standard and MS Publisher 2007 I would hate to have to spend hours figuring this out again. Best question, I guess, would be how long Adobe will support Acrobat .

ITunes Match and AppleTV - Help?

I purchased ITunes Match, however when I try to turn it on via my Apple TV it won't recognize it?

Try to power off your Apple TV for about 30 seonds.
After this look in Settings/iTunes Store if our Account is correct and iTunes Match is enabled.

Trouble again with iTunes and iTunes server

Is anyone having issues with iTunes and thier iTunes server using 10.5, I have a NAS that acts as a iTunes server and all was well prior to the 10.5 update.

Are you running any Firewalls or Anti-Virus software? If so, disable all of that stuff & try again.

Home sharing problem: How can I connect a NAS iTunes server to Apple TV 2?

I have a NAS (network attached storage) that has an iTunes server and I can see the music that I have on that NAS when I open my iTunes on my computers. However, I was wondering if there is a way to add that NAS/iTunes Server to my Home Sharing and not have to turn my computer ON every time.

the short answer is no.
the itunes server on your NAS is a pseudo (fake) itunes instance.
you need a real instance of itunes (that has HomeSharing), and that means itunes running on a pc/laptop.
you can use your NAS as the storage location for itunes, but appletv cannot connect direct to the NAS.

ITunes Library and Time Machine over network

Hello everyone,
I've got a 2008 unibody MacBook running Mountain Lion, I've been using Time Machine on a SeaGate external HDD, in addition to storing my iTunes Media on the drive. This external drive was always plugged into my computer via USB. Well the drive crashed so I've been looking into alternatives. I bought an Extreme Base Station and was hoping I'd be able to plug a similar external drive and achieve the same results wirelessly. After some research, it seems this is very unreliable. I've also come across a WD MyBookLive (NAS) which has a lot of software built in to act as an iTunes server and work with Time Machine (which sounds perfect), however I haven't gotten either of those functions to work. I'm guessing this might be a firmware issue on the MyBookLive, but it's also not letting me update it. What can you guys suggest? What would be the best way to make this work? Thanks in advance!

I could see this being a real issue for me. Is there any news on this front?
Here's my background/intention with TM:
1. I purchased a brand new MacBook for a family member, it's her first Mac experience
2. My wife and I have have MacBooks which we adore (Plus 3 iPhones in the family, Apple TV, AirTunes, the works -- Don't brand me as a "Mac Hater" which these forums love to do as soon as you point out an oversight. let's stay on topic, please!!)
3. We have a 500GB USB drive on my Wife's system for TM use
4. I have a 150GB USB drive for my own TM use.
5. In an effort minimize the amount of USB devices needed, I want to share my wife's 500GB drive for all of us to use TM with it. Seems logical, no?
6. Well, it's a MacBook it is mounted on so it will go to sleep at times, even go on the road.
Now, before people get excited (which they love to do here when you point out a potential issue with our beloved Macs) I fully understand the drive will not always be available. This is already the case as my TM drive is at home and I am at work with my MacBook as I type this. TM is not freaking out and will work happily when I mount the TM drive.
However, will my stepdaughter have a corrupted backup if she has the remote TM drive mounted when my wife puts it to sleep? Even if no backup is running?? My SD is rather sharp, she understands that to do a backup she needs to mount the share and click "back up now" on TM. But should she forget to unmount when she's done is in for disaster??? That wouldn't make sense but from I'm reading here it sounds like the case?

D400: iTunes server doesn't show up in iTunes 9

Hello, I'm trying to setup the iTunes server and the documentation isn't too good.
I have music in the shared Music folder on the D400. I turned on the iTunes Server option. I expected to see a shared music source within iTunes but I see nothing. I'm using iTunes 9 and cannot see anything on a Mac or Win 7.
Is there anything I need to do? Can someone point me to better instructions on how the iTunes server is supposed to work?

Even though it was set to automatically update this was not occurring.
I clicked on the "Update Now" button on Settings and the server now appears in iTunes 9.

You should be able to set up numerous IMAP accounts on your iPhone with no problems.
IMAP will not sync contacts and calendars in your local copy of Outlook.

Synology DS411J as iTunes server.

Is any body using the Synology DS411J as an itunes server and can you stream to your ATV without your mac being on?

I don't have one, but I can tell you that you can't stream to ATV with anything other than iTunes. I used to have a UPNP server that would mask itself as an iTunes library -- it would show up in iTunes as a shared library, but not the ATV.

AppleTV and iTunes without Leaving Computer On All The Time/NAS iTunes Server

I begrudge having to leave my iMac on all the time just so now and again I can play music, pictures and video from it through AppleTV. My iMac is 2 floors up from the AppleTV, and as there is no wake on LAN working (I can't get it to work if there is (I have Lion)) I don't want to go up there to turn the Mac on when I want to use AppleTV.
So I have read some articles about iTunes servers on NAS drives and wondered if that would be a good solution, anyone try them?
If I did have my iTunes library on a NAS drive with an iTunes server, when I start iTunes on my iMac will it then load the iTunes Library as it does now like if it was a local library? So I can still manage it in the same way as I do on my Mac.
I assume then I could have another computer use the same library on the NAS? (although wont do it the same time due to conflicts)
I have iCloud/Match so not so bothered about music as I can play from the Cloud (although its hit ad miss sometimes), but I have videos and pictures I stream to AppleTV so they are more important. I don't want to have a computer left on all the time so I can use AppleTV.
If this is not possible, then I am thinking of getting a Macbook for the lounge, but then I don't want to have to plug/unplug my external hard drives into it all the time, which I am likely to swap with the main iMac too.

P.S. I only play music from iCloud as my iMac is not on. So if I can stream to AppleTV without having a computer on, then I would do that to be faster, work all the time, and save bandwidth.

How to use iTunes on a central PC with my iPad and AppleTV-2010?

I have an Apple TV (new model), two iPads and a central Windows PC running iTunes. I would like to be able to buy movies for that Windows-iTunes installation with my iPad or directly on my AppleTV. Since the latter does not seem possible (you can only rent movies on the new AppleTV), I was trying to setup a VNC server on my Windows/iTunes Machine and use that to buy movies. But the VNC client I use on my iPad (Wyse PocketCloud) does not reliably react to "mouse clicks" and the whole connection does not really feel smooth and reacts rather slowly.
Has anybody a suggestion how to set this up in a nice way? I would love to see that I can buy stuff via my Apple TV (which is then downloaded to the iTunes PC I am connected with) or via my iPad (and tell iTunes that I do not want the content to be stored on my iPad but on my PC).
I would like to avoid having to run to my PC every time I want to buy something.

Was the iTunes content backed up prior to reformating the computer?
Installing iTunes does not cause content to magically appear, without a backup the only option is re-downloading previous purchases. While this works, not all content can be redownloaded and meta data like ratings and playcounts is lost.
Install iTunes.
Restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder from \Music to the computer.
Launch iTunes, everything is as it was.

Highlight the movie, go to iTunes menu ADVANCED and select create iPad and AppleTV version.

HP MediaSmart iTunes and AppleTV

I am trying to understand the workings of the HP MediaSmart server in conjunction with iTunes and the AppleTV.
I am storing all of my music files on the MediaSmart server and I am pointing the iTunes library to the MediaSmart server.
I do not want to store (sync) my music on the AppleTV, I want to stream to it. When iTunes is running, I can access all of my music on the AppleTV, however when iTunes is not running I cannot access any of my music.
I thought that the MediaSmart had an iTunes server built in. This seems to somewhat defeat the purpose of the server as I must have a PC/Mac running iTunes to stream music from the MediaSmart Server to the AppleTV.
1. I want to know if this is normal?
2. Is there a way to have the MediaSmart server stream music directly to the AppleTV without the need to have a PC/Mac running iTunes?

I don't have one of these Media Srevers, but many say they have itunes servers - while they may have a server that itunes can access, most as far as I know will not be suitable for AppleTV as it does not use the standard library sharing method that allows one itunes program on a netork to see another library. The processes may be similar but you have to register AppleTV with an itunes program using a 5 digit code and generally teher's no way to do thsi with these media servers unless you can configure them to run a proper version of itunes.

Airport Extreme = NAS and iTunes server?

Looking for a way to move my external 2TB disk with iTunes content from my iMac and in to the Airport Extrem usb connection. All because I want to access my iTunes library without turning on my iMac. My wish is to use it all from my iPhone remote and be sure that AppleTV also synch to my library from the same disk.
Is this possible?
Are Airport Extreme capable of doing the job as a NAS and iTunes server?

you need iTunes running. you can sync content to the Apple TV, then shut down your iMac, and play the content on the Apple TV on your TV set (or stream tunes from the Apple TV to airport express). you can control the content on the ATV with the Apple remote app installed on your iPhone.
