Sap abap developer or java developer

hi
I am an engineer (fresher) and i have two job offers in my hand one is java/j2ee developer and other is sap abap developer
i am not able to decide which one to choose and i have no idea that which one is better than other.
So if u were in my place then which offer will you accept
Thanks
Viron

Hi Viron,
I had to make a similar decision myself a number of years ago. Based on my personal experience I would say the following:
*ABAP Vs Java*
- ABAP  is a business procedural language, only used with SAP. Therefore you need to ask yourself the question do you want to restrict yourself to working with one product. Also more importantly do you enjoy writing business related reports? i.e. if you would prefer to program games on mobile phones or be involved in developing a cutting edge software product then ABAP is not for you.
-  As a general rule ABAP jobs command a higher salary over Java (in the UK anyway) as it is a more specialised skill. There are far more Java developers around.
- You may feel like ABAP is a step back after programming in Java. Although ABAP supports object orientated programming, web services, web portals ect.. this is not commonly adopted. There is of course a disclaimer here as if you are going to work for a consultancy on green field SAP implementations then you are far more likely to adopt and use the above technologies. However if you are working on an older SAP system or in a support environment most companies are still using the standard R/3 Interface i.e. no web portal and the majority of their reports have not been developed using OO Programming Techniques.
- You could get the best of both worlds if you can get a job as a webdynpro Java developer in SAP. Then pick up ABAP on the side. Having knowledge of both languages would make you highly employable as a web portals developer.
- If you are strongly motivated towards Business Application Programming but would prefer to keep your options open to move into another area later in your career. Then you could look at working with Oracle Fusion, it is a software product based on Java. It is also the 2nd largest ERP tool on the market just behind SAP. This way you are building on your Java programming skills but not restricting yourself to working with an ERP software product in the future.
Hope this is of some help.
Regards,
Phil

  • Discussion: Why no centralize development for Java (like the one in ABAP)

I am reading the NetWeaver Development Infrastructure, and noticed that due to the distributed development nature of Java, SAP recommend The Four-System Landscape for the development lifecycle.
Each developers has their own local development environment, that's why it is necessary to 'reconcile' the environment using one more layer of system. Although they checked out the particular Development Object, the necessary library from the central is being copied by DTR to the local environment. However, there are still possibilities that someone changes the library, or other classes that being refered. And we are not talking only about the business logic, but other object in the persistance level too. Let's say your program refered to a certain field in a certain table, but someone else had changed the field name. Or even worse, you want to get the setting value from a certain setting table, but someone else had deleted the value of that record (for whatever reason).
In short, I believe there are many 'reconcilliation' process that need to be done when the development environment is not centralized. These problems won't happen in the ABAP world, because you will notice the problem straight away when you activate your component, or test run it. In distributed environment, you will only notice it when you check-in your development object back, but it might be after some time lags, and you might not remember which part need to be taken care of.
Not only this, the setting of 'correct' IDE environment in each local PC must be done properly. Again, in ABAP you just need to install SAP GUI and it will be your development environment.
So, I had discussion with a friend of mine, and he asked, why there is no central development environment, like the one in ABAP? Hmm, to be frank, I also don't know. Performance problem? I notice that most IDE in the market based on the assumption that development will be done locally. Or is it for the convenient purpose, so that people can keep the development eventhough there is no connection to central server? But what is the cost for this convenient?
    What other people think?
    rgs,
    Hiroshi
ps: As you might notice, this thread is not marked as question. I am just curious of what other people think about this issue. There will be no points rewarded for the replies.

    Hello Satya,
So if it's a 'mere' technical limitation, then there should be a way to create centralized development for Java
It might be an old mainframe environment, but from the development process point of view, centralized environment offers benefit where lots of versioning problem (library or data dictionary) can be solved.
I used to work in a distributed development environment to create a web based FI/SD/MM related application. We have tons of classic problem of '<i>it is working in my environment, but not in yours</i>' type of thing. With centralized (read: ABAP), version integrity problem can be reduced to minimum.
For the NWDI itself, I think SAP now moves toward embracing the open source platform to support the development environment. From what I've understood, Ant, for example will be used as the build tool. My personal opinion is, better if SAP creates it's 'proprietary' environment to centralized the java development process. Then it will save lot's of hidden cost during the implementation of new application/enhancement/maintenance in the whole supply chain.

Edited by: VINAY on Jun 17, 2010 12:48 PM

    Hi Vinay,
It depends on various factors. one is skill availability. IF client has Strong ABAP Development team, Client can go with WebDynpro ABAP, but if client has more Java skills, no issue in going with WebDynpro Java.
In HR, If you choose to use WD-ABAP, you can use many standard WD-ABAP components as search helps. ( WD-abap components HRRCF_C* , HRASR_C* etc )
But do keep in mind that, even if you go with WD-ABAP, you cannot do away with scripting using FormCalc or Javascript in Adobe Form depending on the complexity & UI elements/Search helps etc.
I personally prefer WD-ABAP & would strongly recommend WD-ABAP. Afterall, it is the language of SAP :).
    Thanks,

  • Using CE 7.1 ESR with ABAP based web services requires java development?

    Hi All,
When developing a web service in ABAP, what java development must I do to make the web services available in an ESR that is located on CE 7.1?
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    Mel Calucin
    Bentley Systems, Inc.

    Hi Stefan,
Someone told me that the difference between CE 7.1 ESR and PI 7.1 ESR is that to register the ABAP web service into CE 7.1 ESR you need to create EJBs and that you don't need to do this for PI 7.1 ESR (since ithe PI 7.1 ESR is ABAP based).  I didn't think that this was the case so I put this question in this forum to confirm this.   I am arguing to put in CE 7.1 because we don't need the PI 7.1 functionality.  This someone told me that we are more of an ABAP shop than a Java shop and that we don't want to develop EJBs whenever we develop ABAP based web services.
    Thanks.

  • Cant find 'SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP & SAP Business Warehouse 7.4 SP8 on SAP HANA 1.0 SP8 [Developer Edition]'

I have successfull installed and been running 'SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP & SAP Business Warehouse 7.4 SP5 on SAP HANA 1.0 SP7 [Developer Edition]'
In my CAL-account I have seen that 'SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP & SAP Business Warehouse 7.4 SP8 on SAP HANA 1.0 SP8 [Developer Edition]' has become available.
Searching 'AWS Marketplace' with 'SAP HANA one' only brings up the version (SP5-7) I already have installed. How am I supposed to proceed to install the latest version (SP8-8)?

It wasn't removed. I and at least one other person reported it as abusive, because it contains just a link. I think after three reports, it's automatically hidden until the moderator rejects it permanently, or releases it. In this case, it was released.
Now, why did I report it? Well, the common view (obviously not shared by the moderator here), is that posts like that
    1) Indicate the original poster (in this case you) could have searched for yourself to find the same link
    2) Damage the site as a whole, as you end up with just a whole bundle of links from one place to another and no real content
    3) Encourage posting of FAQ
My experience is that quite often the link isn't in fact relevant, and is just the result of the first hit of a keyword search using google. In this case it was relevant - but couldn't you have searched and found it yourself?
In the areas I moderate, posts that constitute a single link are rejected as a matter of course. See this blog for a full and complete discussion: Posting links and the jungle you end up in..

    Regards,
    Ravi.

You can get the SAP CRM java application from SAP CRM  installation media,
or download from SAP service marketplace.
I think you can find the info in the Development and Extension Guide
    The components
    x SAP-SHRWEB.sca
    x SAP-SHRAPP.sca
    x  SAP-CRMWEB.sca and
    x SAP-CRMAPP.sca
are designed to be modified and extended in the NWDI. They contain the web files for the E-Commerce
Applications, the IPC Web Applications and the Workforce Management Applications.
    For E-Commerce for mySAP ERP
    x SAP-SHRWEB.sca
    x SAP-SHRAPP.sca
    are designed to be modified.
If you plan to extend database tables you can modify the component
    x SAP-CRMDIC.sca,
    in the NWDI as well.
    The components
    x sap.com~STRUTS.sca
    x sap.com~SAP-IPCMSA.sca
    x sap.com~SAP-CRMJAV.sca
    x sap.com~SAP-SHRJAV.sca
    x TEALEAF.sca
are designed not to be extended or modified in the NWDI. They are required for compiling and building the
    applications.
After you delpoy  the SCAs to AS Java, and configure it with XCM, you can login the web shop.

  • When a WAS developer tries to become a SAP ABAPER ....

    Hi ALL
I'm WebAS ABAP developer. I would like to improve my skills, and be a SAP ABAP developer. I look for a SAP programming quickstart which shows step by step how to create a SAP programs using a screen designer and which could be called by a Ztransaction...
    Thanks all for your help

Now I understand.  I've never seen that approach before.  Most, you see ABAP developers move into BSP, etc, after having a good ABAP foundation.
Here is the ABAP help which may give you some pointers.

  • SAP certification: WA development focus Java

    Hi,
I am working as an ABAPer for three years, before coming to ABAP I learned Java. I had my ABAP certfication two years back. Now I am interested to be SAP certified Java programmer to refresh my Java skills in SAP environment.
If anyone of you have taken the exam, can you please tell me what materials you have used for the preparation.
    Lokman

    Bhabik,
actually SAP Education has some rules.. like if you dont want to attend the training, you need to provide experience certificate certifying 2 years of working exp in the product or something like that. The best place to know that is SAP Education. You can get the mailing link from sap.com --> services --> SAP Education. They can provide you exact details, rules, materials, cost i.e. each information.

                  "<ABAP Application URL>",
                  "<Title for window>",
                  false);

  • SAP ABAP or JAVA

    Hello Folks,
Just Wanted to know according to you, what is better SAP ABAP or Java Developer as a Career.
Presently I have 1 year Exp. as ABAP Consultant and 6 months as Java Developer I should continue in which career ?
    Please help me with this.

    Hi varghees,

In sap modern technologies (Hana native development) are depends on java staff. Means a JAVA developer is know html, css, jsp, servlets, oData, Json, SQL, ....so this will help to lean sap new technologies like ui5, hana native development, serverside javascript, xsjs, River language, Fiori and many more.
As a abap'er he can learn latest technologies like gateway, workflow etc..
so its all depends on your interest.
At last, My interest is java and to be very much interest to learn Hana platform.

  • Database access tool for Java Development

    Hi,
A couple of days back, our SAP's database (MSSQL) was corrupted and downed the Java Stack.
During the Java development, normally after a newly created table was deployed via Java Dictionary, Java developer will access the database via the MSSQL Enterprise Manager to view/delete/update data. Unlike the ABAP development, all database access was done via SE16 in SAPGUI. It was believed that the Java Development kind of direct access to the database via the MSSQL Enterprise Manager was causing some MSSQL tables to be corrupted, and thus downed the Java Stack.
    1. Is there any tool like SE16 to access database during the Java Development?
    2. If no, what kind of recommendation/tool to access database for Java Development?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
    julius

    Julius,
There are no industry recommended open source DB tools.
Normally it depends upon the developer preferences that how he/she wants to see the tool usability.
I can suggest you to go through the below link:
    http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=SQL+Tools
You can find many open source SQL tools, which you have to test and select one among them.
I can suggest you to use:
    1) TOra
    2) Easy SQL
    3) SQuirrel

    Best of Luck

  • Configuring the JDI / Java Development Infrastructure

    Hello,
i know there are a lot of matters in help.sap.com but it is very confusing for me:
I want to configure our development infrastructure for test purposes. We have three workplaces for developers and one testserver with WAS JAVA (+ABAP) 6.40. I want to use Scenario 2 with all Components of the Infrastructure (CBS, DTR, CMS, SLD).
Can you give me hints, where to have a look at and how to start reasonable?
    Thanks for help or advices,
    André

    Hello André,
The guide you need is to be found in the SAP Service Marketplace, Quicklink "instguidesnw04" (http://service.sap.com/instguidesnw04) -> Installation
-> DevEnv -> Installation Guide SAP NetWeaver JDI. Here installation and configuration of the JDI are described. By the way - the development scenarios using the complete JDI are scenarios 2+ and 3. Scenario 2 wasn't using CBS and CMS, but seperate tools to create development configurations and perform the component build afterwards. This scenario 2 was declared a demo scenario and is now no longer recommended, because it's only little more effort to configure CMS, CBS and SLD - as you choose - but doing this then gives you much better insight into the productive use of the SAP NetWeaver JDI (this will be reflected in the next documentation update).
Once you have installed and configured the SAP NetWeaver JDI you'll find tutorials for all development scenarios using the JDI in the SAP Help Portal under http://help.sap.com
-> Documentation --> SAP NetWeaver --> SAP NetWeaver '04 -->  Getting Started – Development Infrastructure.
