Satellite A300-10m - 30GB of HDD space 'missing'!

Hi,
I have just purchased the Sat A300-10m.
The hard drive is suppose to be 250GB but the vista (c:)drive only has 116gb & the data (E:)drive 115gb.
In addition to that i have put 16.45gb of music on the c drive & now only have 67.6gb free.
There is 5gb used on the E drive for system recovery,
Basically as far as i can see im missing about 60gb of hard drive space & although space i understand that some is taken up by programs etc should it be this much & is there any way to check if for example i have somehow managed to load my music into 2 or 3 different places?
A confused newbie to computers!
Rich

Hi
Your hard drive may be 250Gb before formatting but when any hard drive is formatted and partitioned you will loose a fair percentage usualy around 6-7%.
your OS will also take up around 6-9 Gb + depending on which you have and also you must have a fair amount of user progams which all take up space.
Also Toshiba have on their Satellite range a hidden F drive of around 1.5Gb for recovery as well as the folder on E drive.
I would if I were you put your music into E drive as C is always a volatile drive to store alot of data as everything uses it, this would include any pictures and anything else that would be precious or sentimental. E drive is just a data storage drive and not an active drive.
Hope this helps

  • Satellite A300 - Questions regarding second HDD bay

At the underside of the laptop there is an empty bay for a second internal hard disk.
It's at the bottom left side (the first internal hard disk exists on bottom right side) and the bay has a sata connector.
The plastic cover of the empty bay has extended columns so nothing (not even a hard disk) can be positioned inside.
    Does anybody know :
-If the sata connector is working
-If I can connect a secondary internal hard drive that co-work with the primary one
-Where could I order the bracket for the secondary hard disk (i.e. the toshiba code)
-Where I could order a plastic cover without extended columns, bcz I don\t want to break them.
If my question is not clear, I can upload a picture.
    Thank you in advance

Additional information (good news) after some testings:
I connected my primary HDD to the second SATA connector and worked fine. Actually it was recognized as HDD2 and everything worked fine. That means that the second SATA connector works fine and a second HDD can be connected.
The questions that remained answered are
-Where could I order the bracket for the secondary hard disk (i.e. the toshiba code)
-Where I could order a plastic cover without extended columns, bcz I don\t want to break them.
    Thanks in advance

  • Seem to be losing a lot of HDD Space - How to get it back?

Seem to be recently losing at least 40GB of HDD Space when only 10GB should be gone?
How to reset Mac to get it back to normal - recently had 130Gb now down to 91GB, cleared at least 30GB of hdd space also, seem to have done nothing!!!
    PLEASE HELP!!!

    Hi.
Download and install GrandPerspective, a "small utility application for Mac OS X that graphically shows the disk usage within a file system".  Perhaps it'll help you figure out where all that space is being used.

  • Satellite A300-1G2 can't install Win Xp - missing HDD

    Hello,
I have just bought a new Satellite A300-1G2 without an operating system. Now I would like to install Win XP, however during instalation I receive a message that says that windows setup cannot find any hard drives installed on the system. What could be the problem?

I'm not sure whether what I'm going to write here is correct or not (oops) because I never did some of these stuff myself. To install XP I put my hard drive in compatibility mode just like you did and so far my XP works fine. BUT my install CD was a weird one so I cannot guarantee that this is the case for all others.
Apparently to put it back on the SATA AHCI mode you need to install a driver or software (sorry about being ambiguous but I decided to stick to using XP in the compatibility mode) called Matrix something. I'm sure there are hundreds of other threads on this issue so it's best for you to check them again and get some more correct information.
If you don't that and change your bios to SATA AHCI mode you'll get those horrible blue screens... That's as far as I know. Hope that helps

  • Satellite A300-15M - Can I install a second HDD?

    Hi there.
I own a SatelliteA300-15M. I bought the laptop 2 years ago. I have already 250GB hard drive which came with the laptop. Recently I got my laptop serviced from local shop. I noticed that it has an additional slot for another hard drive. I saw a post that some of the A300/A305 laptops have the space for second hard drive but not the connectors.
If anyone owns A300-15M can they please tell me if i can install a second internal hard drive in my model? Is there a sure way to find if I can really install a second hard drive?

    Hello
    > but not the connectors.
So the case is claer: If you dont have a second SATA connector, you cant install a second HDD.
Check also the forum regarding such questions. The point is that one notebook series (e. g. Satellite A300) is always equipped with the same case but the hardware is different. So not all models have the same features. ;)

  • Satellite A300-PSAG8E - HDD indicator is blinking even when i do nothing

    these are my problems
    1. My HDD indicator is blinking even when i do nothing ( blinks every half second or so)
    2. When I go somewhere my display turns off and when I move my mouse display turns on but nothing is happening. Everything is standing still (sometimes 20 seconds, sometimes 2 or 3 minutes ) and than he is ready to work.
    Upgraded BIOS to version 2.20
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
    Laptop: Toshiba Satellite A300-PSAG8E
    Anyone know the solutions?
    Need help please! Thank you

    > 1. My HDD indicator is blinking even when i do nothing ( blinks every half second or so)
Even if you dont touch the notebook, the HDD is running and different applications access the data. The applications and processes which are running in the background would cause this blinking. Note; this is not a problem!
    > 2. When I go somewhere my display turns off and when I move my mouse display turns on but nothing is happening. Everything is standing still (sometimes 20 seconds, sometimes 2 or 3 minutes ) and than he is ready to work.
Disable the stand by modem and disable the settings which disable the screen while notebook is not in use. This can be done in Windows 7 power management.

Any other suggestions out there folks?

On Oracle Metalink site, there are many documents which says that Oracle 32 bit software works on 32 bits OS and 64 bits software works on 64 bits OS. Official support is only in those combination....
So there is no good way to help you in your case-XE is 32 bit application with hard codded compiled libraries which most of them would not work on 64 bit OS.
    Sorry

  • Satellite A300-1G5 - Can I change HDD place?

    Hi everyone;
I have this laptop : [Toshiba Satallite A300 - 1G5|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&com.broadvis ion.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=1055589] . it has the standard specification no upgrades.
I was thinking if it possible to move the HDD from its place (which on the left side of the laptop) to the right side of the laptop, since my model can have 2 separate HDD. This idea came to my mind because of the fact that the CPU ( cooling module ) is actually is on the left side as well as HDD. As everybody knows , CPU generate the most heat of the laptop, so I was thinking I can reduce heat by moving the HDD to right side (where its only contain the DVD drive). A matter of fact, the left side of the laptop is always hotter than the right side.
So, is there any body agree on that? Will the HDD fit on the right side ? If so, can u people help me on how I can move the HDD to the right side?
    thanks in advance ..

    Hi
Theoretically you can exchange the HDD and you can put in into the second HDD slot. It makes no difference if the computer boots from SATA1 port or SATA2 port.
But the interesting thing is that my girlfriend has Satellite A300 too but with 2 HDDs. Now I have looked into both HDD slots and the point is that the HDD chassis to fix it in the notebook (silver chassis) are different. That means you need the HDD chassis for the second slot.
You can get if from an authorized service provider.
Furthermore if your notebook is getting hot you should clean it. I do it every 3 months and always Im wondering how much dust come out.
I hope I could help you a little bit.

  • Can I add a 2nd HDD on my Satellite A300-02C?

    Hi all,
I'm wondering if it's possible to add a 2nd hard drive in my A300-02C?
There is a 2nd HDD slot, but no sata connector on the PCB (see picture link).
    http://www.notebookreview.com/picture.asp?f=36752
I'm wondering if it's possible to add the connector (by myself or by the toshiba customer service).
If someone knows if it's possible and where can i buy the sata connector... Please leave a comment :)
    Adrien.

I think there is nothing you can do about it.
Satellite A300 is delivered with several different hardware configurations and several different mainboards. I really don't believe you can add it additionally.
For exact info contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and ask for help.
If someone has experience with this stuff then Toshiba service technicians.

  • I need to plug second HDD in Satellite A300-14V

    Hello!
I am using A300-14V and now I need to install second HDD. But 2.5 HDDs have different height from 9.5mm to 12.5mm which one right for my Satellite A300? And I will need to buy also a slide rails.
Could somebody please clarify that it is and give me its part number?
    Thanks.

    Hi!
    > I have a second HDD connector but I have not something to fix HDD on the place which is called a fixing rail or slide rail
For this contact the nearest ASP. They can order all necessary parts to fix the HDD in the second HDD bay.
On the Toshiba website you can search for an ASP:

  • Satellite A300-1J1 - How to install 2nd HDD?

    Hello
I bought a Satellite A300 and I see in the specifications that is possible to add a 2nd hdd. So I bought one and when I opened the hdd box, I didn't find a connector to connect to my hdd. I think I must install a SATA connector but I didn't find any way to proceed.
    Thanks
PS : Excuse me if you find mistakes, I doesn't speak very well

    Hello
    Thans for your answers.
Here is the link http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=UK&PRODUCT_ID=1 056110
By the way, I'll take a photo to show you the box, maybe the connector is inside but I didn't notice it.
    Thanks
PS : they changed specifications of the product, removing "box for 2nd hdd". You can see on this site, for example, and for french speakers http://www.ldlc-pro.com/fiche/PB00075521.html that they say "hdd 250 go + box for a 2nd hdd"

  • Satellite A300-1LT won't boot up - blank screen & no HDD activity

I had a problem, touch pad won't work.
I found on internet solution to shut down computer, take out battery, wait a little bit, and start again.
That is when my problems start.
When I placed battery back on, i turned on the laptop.
Blank screen (nothing happens), led indicators are on (except for hdd), cd drive tries to read but nothing happens, and the fan is on.
I tried everything that I could find (wait for 30 min, take battery out, start without battery, etc...) but no luck.
My lap top is Satellite A300-1lt, and I had it for 2 months.
I don't want to take it to service, unless it is really necessary, because i really need it now, I can't wait for weeks until it is returned.
Can please somebody help me out, Im desperate....
    Thanks in advantage...

Connect your notebook (with battery) to the AC power supply and leave it an hour and try to start your notebook again. If notebook starts again leave it running until the battery will be full charged again.
I hope it will work properly again. I have had similar problem with my Satellite A300-1LI and I have do this. Now notebook runs perfectly with and without AC adapter.

  • Satellite A300-1IW: HDD access light blinks every seconds

Hello everyone, and sorry for the english, I'm french :)
I bought a Satellite A300-1IW few days ago and suddently (didn't remember exactly when) the HDD access light start to blink every seconds and it continues even after several reboots!
It only does this with Vista; I checked the disk activity with "diskmon" and I saw that even if there were *no* *disk* *writing* *or* *reading* the led continued blinking, so I think it's not related to some vista services (superfetch, indexing...)
I saw on a Microsoft support a similar problem but it was under windows 98 and with old motherborads!
    see : Link: [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138598]
It seems so that it's related to Vista SCSI or DVD quering...
I now that's not critical but it's annoying to have this led blinking all the time
Have any idea? Do you think it could be related to the bios? I want to be sure before touching this because it's always delicate.
    Thanks for your help

In my opinion nobody must offer any comment because you already given the answer. This is nothing unusual and definitely no reason for panic.
What to do about it? What you want to do? Sorry but it is really stupid question. I can just offer you one stupid answer. ;) Take some black adhesive tape and cower the LED. ;)

  • HDD swop from Satellite A300 to Satellite L500

    hi there!!
i had a toshiba satellite a300 that unfortunately died... i want to take the hard disk drive from it an put it on my cousin's toshiba satellite l500 laptop...
I siply put it to l500 but it stacks at a point that shows again and again something about media test and more...
    What i'm supposed to do?
Te strange (to me that i'm not very computer guy) is that at bios setting shows the model of the hard disk...
I mean that the l500 recognises the drive...please help me...
    thanks in advance..

If you want to rescue the files from the A300 HDD, you have to move it to another place.
But you have to connect these HDD to computer in order to do that.
For this procedure you need the mentioned: 2.5 USB SATA enclosure (google for that to know what Im talking about)
After you have connected the A300 HDD to another computer using the 2.5 USB SATA enclosure, you could move the files to another HDD, USB flash memory or whatever you would use for data saving.
After that you can put the A300 HDD into L500 and could install new system.
    Hope this helps now...

  • Missing "Repair Computer" in Advanced Boot Options - Satellite A300

My new Satellite A300 will not load and I didn't have a chance to make a recovery CD.
I have made a backup of the Hard drive and now want to restore the settings back to the beginning.
I tried downloading a Vista recovery disc but the laptop won't boot from that.
Pressing F8 after turning it on doesn't give me the option to repair the computer and pressing zero on start up doesn't make any difference.
Is there a way of telling the computer to look at the partitioned section of the Hard drive and boot from there?
    Help is much appreciated

Repair my Computer option in Advanced Boot option will be shown if your notebook is installed with recovery image. You can install your own Vista and copy HDDRecovery folder back but this option in advanced boot option will be gone and you will not be able to install OS using this option because it will not exist anymore.
    There is nothing to do.
