Satellite internet broadband with my powermac g4 Ti

Does anyone know anything about connecting to the internet with wireless satellite broadband? I don't even know if I'm using the right terms. Any suggestions for satellite service providers for Mac? I would like it to be a wireless hookup so I can use my laptop anywhere I choose.

Claire, There are several different Internet Service Providers out there and they vary from the old Dial Up it uses your built in modem in your machine.
Next, there is DSL this also uses your phone line that plugs into a DSL Modem which in turn connects to your machine, via an ethernet cable. Next we have Cable, most of these are actually Satelite Services, Like Roadrunner, Comcast, and Direct TV.
All of these sevices furnish you with a Modem that comes from there cable, and in turn you run an ethernet cable from that modem to your machine for service.
Some of these providers offer what is called a Wireless Modem Router (At additional cost to you), this will enable you to have a wireless connection, if your paricular computer has a wireless or Airport, or Airport Extreme Card installed.
Almost all of the services available will furnish there Modem with there service and from there any other hardware and the type of sevice you want will be additional cost to you in the way of Routers. You can buy this equipment from any computer store. from $30.00 up to $ 2 or 3 hundred.
All also give you step by step instructions.
Cheers Don

  • Has anyone else a large amount of bandwidth being used when running the new iOS 7? I have satellite internet with a fixed gigabyte allowance a month.

I am seeing bandwidth spikes when using the new iOS 7. I have satellite internet so I have a monthly gigabyte allowance. When the ipad is in sleep mode or just doing casual browsing it is fine. But for example, last night I put the ipad in airplane mode and this morning when I took it out and it reconnected to my router it immediately sucked up ~300mbs of bandwidth. I know for the majority of people this no big deal but when you are on a fixed amount a month this becomes costly! Is there anyone else noticing this, and what appears to be happening? I never had this problem with ios6.
    Thanks!

  • Location Services with satellite internet connection

I have a 5th generation iPod Touch. I connect to internet at home through wifi router connected to satellite internet modem and dish (Hughes). My location services always says that it cannot determine my location. Is this typical of a satellite dish connection?
    Thanks

For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database does not included your router.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

  • Airport with satellite internet

I have satellite internet and am trying to set up an airport extreme. My modem is OK via eithernet. My Airport seems to be creating a wireless network but with no internet access. Any ideas?

Many satellite providers use private IP addresses.. 10.x.x.x
If you have the airport setup to default also using 10.0.1.x for LAN it simply will not work.
You will need to move the IP of the AE to a different range..
The AE should be in router mode, ie DHCP and NAT.
Then go to network options and change its IP to 192.168.

  • EA3500 with WildBlue Satellite Internet

I used the CD to set up my new EA3500 with my Wild Blue Satellite internet modem.
An IPhone or IPad can connect and work like a charm, remaining rock solid at all times.  Windows 7 on the other hand, will work and then lose connection to the internet.  The PC appears to remain connected to the EA3500, but the connection between the EA3500 and modem appear to be lost.  I can click on the bar Icon at the bottom and it shows everything to be fine.  I click on disconnect and then wait a few seconds and click on connect again and it works for a few minutes before having to do it again.
When I look at the router properties the CD set it up for DHCP.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi, I'm not sure if this may be of interest, but I am using a Satellite connection which is 512 Up and Down, (V-Sat) Provided by MTN in the states. There are several Macs using this here and we are having mixed results. (We are on a large yacht). Some of us are able to connect perfectly well with other I chat users elsewhere in he world, and some not. It seems to be more of an IP problem that a bandwidth problem. I will point out though that our bandwidth is totally dedicated and there is no contention so we get the full 512 Kb each way.
For those of us who do get it to work, the I chat with video full screen works perfectly well. The problems some of us are having seem to be related to the IP set up at the other user's end. I have contacted Apple about it and they say it is not an Apple problem but an ISP problem, which does seem to be the case.
The point is though, that 512 Kbs is more than enough to use I chat successfully even in full screen mode, but that is with dedicated bandwidth, what it is like on a contended line with that amount of bandwidth, I would not be able to comment on. Do you know what your contention ratio is on your Wildblue system ? It could well just be that you are not getting enough of the 1.5 Mb/s bandwidth as you are sharing it with too many other users.
I would recommend dedicated bandwidth, but it is very expensive, we are currently paying circa, $12,000 USD per month for this 512 Kb/s UP/DOWN service. I don't know what your circumstances are whether you are working for a company who is paying for the service, but you can without a doubt get great results with this level of bandwidth using I Chat AV . I am running Leopard 10.5.1
Hope this is of some help to you.

  • HughesNet (satellite) internet service work with Airport?

I'm in process of getting satellite internet service installed. There is no DSL or cable where I live. I do not currently have an Airport Extreme, but have gotten on the internet many times while traveling in our RV when the campground has WIFI, so I know my Airport card works. My question is, will the Airport Extreme allow me to be wireless within my house with the satellite internet? The HughesNet will connect via a modem with an ethernet cable to my computer. Would I just plug that cable into the Airport, as they say you do with a DSL or cable internet?
I also see much mention of routers; would I need one of these also?
    Thanks.

  • Flash Player download keeps failing with lost connection and then gives up.  satellite Internet connection

    Win XP. Firefox 34.0.5 (latest)
The Flash  Player download keeps failing with lost connection and then gives up.I am on a  satellite Internet connection.
It seems to be extremely slow even when loading the installer which is only 1MB. Then when I run the installer and it starts to download the installation there are frequent messages about losing the connection and then finally gives up.
I have had problems with other software failing when I am on a satellite link. This is most likely because of the huge latency which may be taken as a link failure. Ping times are typically 800ms but can be 2000ms sometimes!

    Hello,
The online shim installer, which you are using actually downloads and installs Flash Player silently in the background.  If your satelite connection is experiencing latency issues it could result in the failure to download.  Please try the full installer posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Windows page, in the 'Still having problems' section.

  • VPN and Satellite Internet

Is this possible? I have a vpn connection currently w/ broadband internet. Moving to rural area. Can only get satellite internet. Is there one satellite internet service that is compatible with a vpn connection?

You'd have to check with each specific provider to see what they recommend.
One option is to use SSL vpn instead of ipsec.

  • Re: Satellite U400-11Q with Vista has new HDD but no recovery disk

    Hi,
Before I start a very important message: I usually don't work with pc...:-) At my work we have an IT-department for our PC's :-))
However, now I have to work privately with a PC/ notebook and I need help: I am sitting in front of a Toshiba Satellite U400-11Q with a completely newly formatted HDD and unfortunately with NO recovery CD or DVD whatsoever !!
So far I have managed to format the HDD aagain and to put a WindowsVista Home Basic (OEM Software) from my old pc onto this notebook. However, nothing works yet ( I want to get into the Internet etc.)
Therefore I now need to put on all relevant drivers as well as the original TOSHIBA drivers, right ?
How do I do this ? Which drivers to I need ? Do I need to download all relevant drivers (totally 113) one by one from the Toshiba website ?
ANY help is appreciated as I can see myself spending the whole night in front of this PC..
    Thanks,
    M

    Hi Dr.Lamp,
thanks for helping me with listing the drivers as well as giving me a recommendation on the use of Windows 7.
Re Windows 7, unfortunately I only have a "free" VISTA Home Basic at home and therefore I have used this operating system for tonight ! I want to get this PC/ machine running as well as possible as quickly as possible...just unfortunate that its a PC with the need of "thousands of drivers"...
If anyone in cyberspace is interested in reading about my HUGE problems with simply setting up a computer newly, I can at this point simply recommend to you PC fanatics:
Please do put onto the internet decent driver packages to download for somebody like me in a bulk !!! why make life so difficult ? How the hell will I get the right order of driver packages ( which you are listing) on to this PC if I have:
    - no idea where to find the drivers you mention ( I have to google every single one of them)
    - I have already bought a "recovery DVD from Toshiba, but which takes up to 14 days to arrive and costs about 36 EUR
    - I just want to get the computer up and running properly with all licenses legally acquired !
So here I am after about 12 hours of woring on this thing as a newbe:
I have so far this evening managed to firstly install a network driver ( I also had an old VISTA resource DVD at hand) after somehow installing some "recommended network drivers" ( by this recovery DD).
This way I managed to get the wireless LAN connection up and running which is a huge success, because I can now download drivers form INTERNET directly onto the computer.
Currently there is an installation running of Windows VISTA including about 120 updates for this VISTA, so I am busy on these updates...I am nowhere close to the 50% installed mark so I probably will have to get some sleep now and continue tomorrow with you list as well as finding your drivers and installing them in the right order ! What a drag ?! Well, somehow these PC's just cost you TONS of TIME..
Anyway thanks for you help and if you can give me a hint on a shortcut, I would be very happy to hear about it.
    Thanks

  • How can I use Internet Sharing with Firewall on ?

    Hi,
My PowerMac G5 is connected to the internet via Ethernet. I share the connection to a Powerboog via Airport using internet sharing. Everything is working fine except when I turn the Firewall on. After reading http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107653 I tried opening port 443 but it still does'nt work. I'd like to be able to use internet sharing with the firewall on. Anyone can help me ? Thanks!

Hmmm, how curious... I never had to do that in 10.4.7 or 10.4.8... the only ones I ever tried Internet Sharing with.
I'm wondering if turning the Firewall on after the Internet sharing is what's doing it? Just for kicks you might try turning off Internet Sharing, then Firewall on, then turn on Internet Sharing.
If that doesn't work, then I'd personally try trashing...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
Then reboot and try the Firewall again.

  • Satellite internet users cannot connect to Flash based online multiplayer games

    Hello,
I have found that Satellite internet users are unable to
connect to the game Club Penguin because of the recent security
fixes that have been added to the flash player over the last 6
months or so. Club Penguin used to require at least Flash Player 7
to run, at this time satellite users could connect.
They recently upgraded their system to require Flash player 9
or higher, since this update no satellite users can connect if they
have the newest versions of Flash. If they revert back to the Flash
Player 9r47 they can then connect to the game. Of coarse this opens
the computer up to the exploits that have been fixed.
Anyone have any idea of how to notify Adobe of this issue? Or
possibly another way to make it work with the newest versions of
    Flash Player?

Does this problem with your Internet satellite happen only with this game? You might want to contact your Internet provider as I'm sure they will be able to work with Adobe in fixing the problem.

  • IChat & Direcway Satellite Internet?

Hey all.. My sister (unfortunately) has satellite internet by way of Direcway. We've had very limited success with video & audio connectivity. The system has pretty serious latency between request and result, and I'm wondering if perhaps this would cause the chat requests to fail (we both get the obligatory "did not respond" message). I've had her open up the ports as suggested in a number of posts here, we've knocked our bandwidth limits to their lowest settings as well but to no avail. I have no problem connecting with others from my machines, and I'm on a full T1.
Has anyone used, with success, iChat AV's audio & video features with satellite internet?
    thanks in advance,
    -greg-
    2.5 Quad Core G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   8gigs Ram, GeForce 7800GT, 30" Cinema Display, 3TB Storage, Kona LHe

    Hi Greg,
I would move in the Other direction.
Set the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming speed to match her max download.
Set iChat > Preferences > Video section Banwidth Limit to none.
Unfortunately Satelite for this is pants.
Things to try involve trying to beat the latency between starting a chat and full speed of the uplink.
Try a iTune Store sample as a download to fool the system into thinking it is going to run at full tilt.
Also try sending a file from her end first to you to get the uplink speed as high as it cn be before the chat starts.
Or updating her web pages if she has any.

  • Can I replace my broadband with Apple TV?

Can I replace my Comcast broadband with appletv? I only watch local news and assorded sporting shows, e.g. MLB, NFL. These are apps I can buy.
    Thanks in advance for response.

Take a look at whats available on the Apple TV, it should help you decide. You will still need broadband or some type of internet service though.

  • Unable to use Internet Connect with my new wireless device

I just received a new wireless device for my macbook pro. Normally I sign on with Internet Connect, but after setting up the new card, I can only connect using Verizon Manager, which usually doesn't give me good connection, I don't know why.
I called the Verizon people, they mostly are clueless as to how I was able to sign on using both Internet Connect and Verizon Manager before with my old card. I remember there's a way of setting up manually if you want to use Internet Connect. Problem is, when I went to Systems Preferences and clicked on Network, a pop up prompt saying "your network setting have been changed by another application" keeps popping up even as I keep closing it. ***?!!! How can I get rid of it so I can change network setting manually?
I just want the option of connecting with Internet Connect with my new wireless device. BTW, when I try connecting with it using my old setting National access/ Broadband access , I get a message saying "the selected communication device does not exist".

"I just received a new wireless device"
If not from Verizon, then who? Did it come w/a manual? If not, have you contacted the vendor/manufacturer for instructions?

  • IChatAV3 and Satellite Internet

Since I live in the swamps and Bellsouth only has dialup, I have subscribe to WildBlue Satellite Internet. My downlink is 1Mbps and uplink is 200Kbps. The downlink works pretty good but my problem is with the uplink. Various testing indicators say I am really doing about 168 Kbps uplink. And that is about what I really should expect.
The problem is, iChat sees the uplink as less than 50Kbps and therefore you know what that means. I have been through the FAQs and tried to ensure the speeds, ports, firewalls, setups, etc. I have my streaming speed set to my downlink of 1Mbps. The WildBlue technicians tell me that satellite delays is what the problem could be. And also that it is an iChat software problem.
    Help!!

    Hi LA Sculler,
This is normally down to the latency of the modem.
They are often set so that the data rate is slower when the use is low and it speeds up as you put through or request more data.
iChat requires that the speed is there from the moment you start up iChat as it takes a reading from the Quicktime setting.
It is often difficult if not impossible to fool the modem (such as listening a sample of a iTunes store file) to get the modem to tell iChat that the connection speed is fast enough.
