Save to smb-mounted file = kernel panic

I use a shared network fileserver, with most of my files on a device mounted on smb:
Three times now I've encountered kernel panics while saving to a file on that device from BBEdit. Their technical support note (quite rightly I'm sure) that this can't be their fault.
Any tips would be welcome!

We have the exact same problem throughout our company. Apple was unwilling, as usual, to admit that leopard has a problem (despite that this issue didn't exist in 10.4) they wanted us to call Microsoft and said their solution would be to "downgrade to tiger". That is an upsetting response after dropping the cash to upgrade over 10 macs to Leopard; that are now all randomly panicking because of this issue. Way to treat your business customers and expand your influence in the corporate world Apple.
Maybe an ambitious soul out there will take the smbfs 1.4.4 from freeBSD and compile it into a patch for us and hope that works.

  • Boot Drive isn't mounted, causing Kernel Panic

    Hey everyone,
I'm on the latest version of Panther and I am getting a Kernel Panic (You need to restart your computer) everytime I boot. Now I've tried a lot of things already, from zapping my PRAM to Reseting my PMU. I ran a Hardware test and that's all kosher. I can't get into Safe Mode from holding Shift during boot.
I have however found something interesting; I ran Disk Utlility from my OS X disc and have found that my Boot Drive (Itchy) is greyed out and not mounted but my Storage Drive (Scratchy) is just fine. I can Verify and Repair the disk but I cannot Verify or Repair Disk Permissions which Mac 101 recommends. I tried simply selecting the volume and clicking mount but it isn't working. I played with the cords connecting to my drive and they're all plugged in tight.
    Please help me out!

Sounds like your boot drive is bad.

  • Kernel panic after installing additional ram

    Hi there.
(I think this should go here, not in laptop issues because it seems to be more hardware-related)
I have a laptop Acer Aspire 2920Z with 2x512 Mb stock ram and I recently bought an memory upgrade 2x2gb. Any of them works when inserted separately, but when I install both, I see kernel panic upon starting X on my i686 Arch installation (and /proc/meminfo shows that I have only 3Gb).
The same behaviour occurs when I try to boot from latest Arch install iso or x86_64 archbang livecd.
My BIOS is updated to latest version and it shows that I have 4Gb of RAM installed.
Right now I installed x86_64 linux kernel but I still have kernel_panic on booting my machine.
Is there any chance that I can use 4gb ram on my laptop?
Also, what are the ways to save those error messages that kernel panic provides? (aside from just taking a picture of the screen with my camera)

cra wrote:I installed kernel by changing architecture param in pacman.conf, running pacman -Syy and pacman -S linux, as described in the corresponding page on the wiki, but without reinstalling every single package I have
    Do that step.

Wait, you mean just booting the livecd gets you a kernel panic? Insert both of them at the same time, and the test them with memtest86+
Chances are your motherboard pins could have a problem. A problem that is noticiable when you insert both sticks.
    Test them with memtest86+.

  • Kernel Panic when using AppleTalk via AirPort Express

I thought that the issues pertaining to kernel panics when using AppleTalk to connect via AirPort to remote server were solved in the latest (10.5) version of MacOSX - but they are unfortunately not solved.
    ok, so I connect to the remote (macosx) server via the "Connect to..." menu item in Finder. i have a working internet connection up and running via AirPort {AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87) Firmware: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.9)}
i log in and all is fine - until midway through copying some files - kernel panic. the panics can occur even while doing stuff locally, while the AppleTalk connection is just sitting idle in the background.
i am on MacOSX 10.5.4, iMac 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM.
the kernel panics have been occuring since the Leopard upgrade - never before (on either this machine or my older iMac G5).
    any suggestions?
    thanks in advance,

  • IMac G4 Kernel Panic

I recently set up a PPC iMac G4, 800 MHz. I pulled out the user-accessible 256 RAM that came with the machine and replaced it with this 512 stick from OWC. I had been using that stick in another machine for about a year without issue.
I erased the HD and did a clean install of 10.4 from a retail disc, and then did all the software updates to get it to 10.4.11.
Since setting it up it's been kernel panicking fairly often. I can't tell if there is a specific trigger for the kernel panic, but I was trying to get dropbox to work (supposedly it's supported for PPC) and it doesn't seem to like that very much.
Permissions and HD are fine, per Disk Utility/First Aid.
I can't run the Apple Hardware Test, because the optical drive on this machine doesn't work and AHT won't boot from an external optical.
I'd like to find out if there is an issue with the RAM. I've been running memtest in single user mode. When I run memtest with all the RAM in the computer, I get a FAILED message several times, and then a kernel panic. When I run memtest after pulling out the 512 RAM, I only get a kernel panic.
I tried to get a log from memtest, but it doesn't save--presumably because of the kernel panic.
Does anyone have experience with this? Should I assume it's the internal stick of RAM--in which case I would have to order a new one and take the machine apart to replace it, and then test it again? Or is there a better way to test the RAM? Any other components that could be causing the kernel panic?
Let me know if you need more information, and I'll try to take some photos of the screen during the test.
    Thanks!

  • Kernel Panics over hard drive check

This happened out of nowhere.. I just opened gtk-chtheme and everything freezed... I hen hard rebooted the machine and it gave me a kernel panic. Rebooted again and the kernel panic happened during UDEV loading. Rebooted again and now it always happens during SDC1 journal's recovery (my /home partition).
I live-booted partition magic but when trying to mount sdc1--kernel panic....
Tried to mount it on windows "Drive is not formated" (all other Linux partitions work)
Booted from the arch cd (with root=/dev/sdb2 (my root partition)) and it gave me, not a kernel panic, but an error message about the state of the journaling system and the option to either use a  maintenance shell or CTRL+D to reboot.
How do I recover this HD? Or better yet.. how do I backup my data from it?

What is the filesystem you use on that partition (sdc1)?

  • Noticed my hard drive getting filled, didn't save 500 Gb of data on it. I made the observation that hidden files are been created on the Hd. I assumed they were unnecessary and deleted most of them. To my dismay am getting a kernel panic msg. what to do?

Depending on what directory or directories you were erasing from you've certainly erased important system files and perhaps important applications files as well. If you have been using TimeMachine to back your computer up you should reboot into recovery mode (restart and hold Command + R until you see the Apple icon) and perform a restore.
If you haven't, boot into recovery mode anyway and choose the install OS option. Keep your fingers crossed that the OS is the only thing you deleted and that this works. You may also find it necessary to reinstall some of your software.

  • Kernel panic caused when saving Photoshop file

    Hi all,
Wondering if someone can help out with this kernel panic sitaution?
We've got two Creatives in the office who have recently both upgraded their iMac's to Mavericks 10.9. They both use Photoshop CS5 extended (12.1 x64). We have a Windows 2008R3 server and both are using SMB2 to connect to the server.
When they try to save an open Photoshop file they are editing, they get an error related to permissions. When they try to save the file again using a different name, their machines immediately kernel panics. Here's a panic log from one of their machines that just crashed now.  Any solutions out there? This was not happening befor they upgraded to Mavericks, however they did get the file permissons issue.

    Hi,
instead of using smb://Servername use cifs://ServerName for share SMB shared volume error will resolved.

  • Kernel panic sometime after 10.4.9 software-updated, SMB?

Apparently samba-networking related - makes sense: it happened as I saved a BBEdit file to an already-SMB-mounted Window2000 server volume (across wired ethernet). Earlier I'd rebooted a couple of times after the update (once then it asked me to, a second time to check everything was OK).

Then, I suspect your permissions are a bit out of sorts. Launch Disk Utility and repair the permissions and try downloading again. If still no go, create a new admin user account, log into it, and try downloading. If that's successful, then the problem lies within the old account, most likely a conflicting or corrupted preference file, and you'll have to sort that out.

  • HT4833 logic files on external hard drive and kernel panic

I was using 2 external HDs via the Sonnet sata pro express34 card in MaBookPro. One ext. HD had only Logic project files, the other had plugins. Logic 9.I.7 installed on the MBP i7 late 2010 (OS 10.6.8), with Motu 828 audio interface via FW400. All this worked for a number of projects (simple stereo masters). Then Kernel panic damaging one ext HD with plugins. Then with just the other extHD connected, problems began. Trying to bounce a song, it stopped and froze, kernel panic with damage to the ext HD.
Seemed Logic could no longer work with the files on the ext HD. Don't know if this began before or after the HD was damaged.
First HD couldn't mount so turned off journaling, mounted and enabled journaling again. Have been backing up all on that HD via FW800, then will erase and format it.
    Second HD had
    "...Keys out of order
    Rebuilding catalog B-tree.
The volume ONETB could not be repaired..."
I backed up the files, erased and reformatted it. Waiting to try the setup again until the problem is figured out.
    1) I see there is also a Logic folder on the MBP with 3 projects in it. Did this confuse the program to have this on the internal drive plus a Logic folder with projects on the external drive?
Can I set up the program so all projects always stay on the external drive, instead of a default which created these early projects on the MBP drive?
    2) Is this not the problem and the whole thing is a problem with the express/34 card esata drivers/kext files, or 32 bit vs 64 bit, or ...?
    Many thanks, chas

I don't see how to edit my post above. I did not intend to title it "HT4833", that was just a page I'd looked at in the learning about Logic stuff, and this showed up in my question title. Strange there seems not to be a way to edit posts.

  • HT6114 Kernel Panic in OS X 10.9.2 copying a file to a file server

    Hi,
i've made the update to OS X 10.9.2 3 days ago and it looked like we had all our problems with this OS X solved.
Today, I deleted from a share in a NAS (file server) a small file and tried to copy another one with the same name, but the moment the copy should start the OS X did a kernel panic and restarted the iMac.
It's a Mid 2011 27'' iMac with 8 GB RAM and the 1 TB standard HD.
The Kernel Panic report is as following:

  • Kernel panic, now external drive won't mount

I had a kernel panic on my trusty old Powerbook G4 867MHz today. It's running 10.5.8.
Everything on the computer seems to be fine after restart, but the WD MyBook 500MB that is connected directly to one of the PowerBook's USB ports now won't mount.
The drive spins, but no show on the desktop.
Disk Utility sees it. Verification and Repair work perfectly and pronounce the drive in perfect working order. I just can't mount it. Restart makes no difference. Neither does switching USB ports.
I have also connected it directly to an iMac running 10.6.2. The iMac's Disk Utility can also see the drive and tell me that it's in fine health, but it, too, can't mount it. In the drive list in the Disk Utility pane, the first line of description of the drive is black like all the rest. The second line — the working name I have given the WD500 — is grayed out.
    Three questions:
    1. Have I tried everything?
    2. Is this situation retrievable?
    3. If the worst happens and it cannot be mounted as is, what is the easiest way to get files off the drive so I can erase and reconfigure it?
    Thanks in advance.

    HI Norman,
*" If the worst happens and it cannot be mounted as is, what is the easiest way to get files off the drive so I can erase and reconfigure it?"*
There are no way to retrieve those files without connecting to your Mac(s).
*"The second line — the working name I have given the WD500 — is grayed out."*
It's possible the drive has died. Especially since it won't mount on either Mac.
Go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics
Also, if the WD MyBook came with any software, try reinstalling it.
    And try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Kernel Panic and /sbin/mount -uw / not working

    Got a kernel panic:
    Jnl: transaction too big
After some googling i found out that this i created by too little free space on the hard drive for the temp files.
This could be correct, there i had only a couple of Gb free and downloaded a large file, so i think my free space is all gone.
Trying to reboot in single user mode and deleting some large files.
But in single user mode i can only read te files not delete them.
So when i enter: /sbin/mount -uw / but now them system freezes and i cannot do anything.
Tried target mode to enter the hdd but when connecting the host to the target, the host asks for a reboot.
What can i do next except a new start?
I have time machine and a backup, but some home movies weren't backup-ed yet, so hoping to resolve this problem.

The drive is malfunctioning. If you can't get the data out, it's gone, unless you want to send the drive to a recovery service. In that case, the less you do with it, the better.

  • Finder Content not updating with files on SMB mount

I have Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on a Mac Mini.  I work in Adobe Lightroom 4 and Photshop CS6 with files hosted on a PC running Windows 7 Ultimate, and access these files via an SMB mount on the Mac.  Both machines are up-to-date on their respective updates.
This worked fine up til recently, when I started noticing Finder contents don't necessarily update when the files change on the SMB-mounted filesystem.  For example, if I create a new file, say, using Photoshop, and save the file, then try to see the file in Finder  (so I can copy it to another location), the file doesn't show up.  Force-quitting Finder & restarting it causes the new file to appear, but this is a temporary fix, as the problem sometimes recurs again when I create more new files.
It seems like this problem appeared after the 10.8.2 update, as I never noticed it with earlier releases.  Have any of you seen this?  I do my SMB mounts via the "Connect to Server (CMD-K)" dialog.  Would I be better off mounting it from the command line with some specific options?
    Thanks in advance...

    Try deleting this file: com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. See if that helps...
Seems to me that Adobe is very picky about where the files are kept on the hard drive. You might not want them in the Sidebar. Whenever you do an Adobe software update, the installer needs the path to where those files go. If it's missing in action, it can wreak havoc.
Make sure when you do Adobe updates, if there is a link included or a Read Me file, check that out first before installing anything.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions BEFORE and AFTER any software updates:
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • After a kernel panic my log says hfs removed orphaned or unlinked files and directories

Today, September 14, I had my first ever kernel panic on a MacBook Pro that was purchased in July of this year. After reboot, a file that I use every day seemed to be missing all updates since September 6. There were no newer versions in my TimeMachine backups either. During my investigation to determine how that could be, I found these entries in my log of the post-panic reboot:
Sep 14 12:49:12 localhost kernel[0]: hfs: mounted xxx on device root_device
Sep 14 12:49:12 localhost kernel[0]: hfs: mounted xxx on device root_device
Sep 14 12:49:12 localhost kernel[0]: hfs: Removed 596 orphaned / unlinked files and 1920 directories
Sep 14 12:49:14 xxx kernel[0]: hfs: mounted Recovery HD on device disk0s3
Sep 14 12:49:14 xxx kernel[0]: hfs: unmount initiated on Recovery HD on device disk0s3
Sep 14 12:49:15 xxx kernel[0]: hfs: early journal init: volume on disk1s2 is read-only and journal is dirty.  Can not mount volume.
Sep 14 12:49:31 xxx kernel[0]: hfs: Removed 0 orphaned / unlinked files and 91 directories
Sep 14 12:49:31 xxx kernel[0]: hfs: mounted MacBook Backup B on device disk1s2
The removed orphans and directories seem very concerning to me. Is there a way to tell what was removed and why?
    What should I do next?

You are getting a kernel panic because you are trying to boot the computer with a Tiger DVD. That model requires 10.6.3 - Snow Leopard. You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:
