Saving a modified CFMutableArray

Question

I am new at this and somewhat confused. I'm trying to programmatically add keychain.menu to the menubar.
here is a code snippit of what I have:
int main (int argc, const char * argv[])
//open the array
CFArrayRef cfMenuItems = CFPreferencesCopyAppValue(CFSTR("menuExtras"), CFSTR("com.apple.systemuiserver"));
CFShow(cfMenuItems);
//get copy of the array
CFMutableArrayRef cfArrayCopy = CFArrayCreateMutableCopy(kCFAllocatorDefault, 0, cfMenuItems);
//add the value to the array
CFArrayAppendValue(cfArrayCopy, CFSTR("<string>/Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app/Contents/Resources/Keychain.menu</string>"));
CFShow(cfArrayCopy); //instrumentation
*//replace the orig array with the new array*
//save the new array
//release the array
CFRelease(cfMenuItems);

My confusion stems from replacing the original array with the modified one saving the new array. If someone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it

You don't touch preferences files you don't own. Just open the .menu bundle and it will magically load itself.
