Saving Croatian characters in XML file

Hi,
I'm trying to save Croatian characters into an XML file by using the windows-1250 encoding. For some reason, that doesn't work. Only the and characters (in upper and lower case) are OK. All other characters turn into ? signs, if you open the xml file.
Here's my code:
import org.dom4j.DocumentHelper;
import org.dom4j.Element;
import org.dom4j.Document;
import org.dom4j.io.XMLWriter;
import org.dom4j.io.OutputFormat;
import java.io.*;
public class test {
  public static final String ENCODING = "windows-1250";
  public static void main( String[] args ) {
    Element root = DocumentHelper.createElement( "XMLTest" );
    Document doc =  DocumentHelper.createDocument( root );
    Element elem = root.addElement( "t1" );
    try {
      String test = "čćđČĆĐ";
      String x = new String(test.getBytes( ) , ENCODING);
      elem.setText( x );
      OutputFormat format = OutputFormat.createCompactFormat();
      format.setEncoding( ENCODING );
      format.setTrimText( false );
      FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream( new File( "testtest.xml" ) );
      XMLWriter writer = new XMLWriter( out, format );
      writer.setEscapeText( true );
      writer.setMaximumAllowedCharacter(255);
      writer.write( doc );
      writer.close();
    catch ( UnsupportedEncodingException e ) {
      e.printStackTrace();
    catch ( FileNotFoundException e ) {
      e.printStackTrace();
    catch ( IOException e ) {
      e.printStackTrace();
}Thanks in advance for any help.
Greet

I assume that your java file has been saved in an encoding that can support the croatian characters?
The problem is then probably in this area:
String test = "čćđČĆĐ";
String x = new String(test.getBytes( ) , ENCODING);
elem.setText( x );There is no need to encode a String. The only time an encoding becomes important is when converting from a String to bytes or converting bytes into a String.
Try this instead:
elem.setText("čćđČĆĐ");By the way, there should be no need to escape the text in the XMLWriter.

    How about giving us some example XML and what you expect as output as there can be easier ways of extracting data from XML than using the dbms_xmldom package.
    The dbms_xmldom package is one way, but it's not necessarily the best, as I would tend to use that for processing XML based structure that I don't actually know (I have used it myself, for example, for parsing XML Schemas (XSD) to auto-generate code for producing XML to match that schema), but for extracting date from a known XML structure, I would probably use SQL's XMLTABLE functionality.
    And when you post code/data, please use the {noformat}{noformat} tags as detailed in the FAQ: {message:id=9360002}

  • Can't get UTF-8 characters from XML file displayed correctly (Cocoa Touch)

    Hi there,
    I'm trying to read an XML file with Japanese and Korean characters (encoded UTF-8) into a String like
    NSString *s = [[NSString alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://.../data1.xml"] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding error:&e];
    However, the output just gives me some wrong characters. I also tried use NSData, but the result was the same.
    The same when I parse the XML file with
    NSXMLParser *parser = [[NSXMLParser alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:URL];
    The parser function just gives back gibberish.
    When I write the data into a table cell (cell.text = ...), only the first character is displayed followed by "...".
    Where can I start looking to get this right? I'm not so experienced in Cocoa yet, so I feel that I'm missing something simple here...
    Thanks,
    Thomas

    I think so (haven't checked), but it is a really simple test xml which is not really error prone).
    But the problem is a different one, because I also just tried to read a txt file with some Japanese characters into an NSString using initWithContentsOfURL.
    When I print the string in the console, I only get messed up characters (the latin characters next to the Japanese are displayed fine).
    It is a general problem of reading out an UTF-8 file from an url.
    Spent the whole last night to google something helpful but couldn't find anything. Now I'm tired at work

  • LPX-00217 invalid character error - Using reference characters in XML file

    Hi, I hope you will help me to understand and to fix the error I get during insert of an XML file into a table with XML Type field.
    I used Oracle documentation for this:
    1. Create table
    CREATE TABLE XMLDOC
    ( XMLCOLUMN xmltype);
    2. Create external directory
    CREATE OR REPLACE DIRECTORY FILESDIR AS 'E:\ora_xml_test\';
    3. Create function
    CREATE OR REPLACE function DSS.getClobDocument(
    filename in varchar2,
    charset in varchar2 default NULL)
    return CLOB deterministic
    is
    file bfile := bfilename('FILESDIR',filename);
    charContent CLOB := ' ';
    targetFile bfile;
    lang_ctx number := DBMS_LOB.default_lang_ctx;
    charset_id number := 0;
    src_offset number := 1 ;
    dst_offset number := 1 ;
    warning number;

    charset_id := NLS_CHARSET_ID(charset);
    end if;

    charset_id, lang_ctx,warning);
    DBMS_LOB.fileclose(targetFile);
    return charContent;
    end;
    And now appears the problem when I use different character references - one of them are parsed by the XML parser and another -are not:

    Which database version are you using and what is the characterset used during its creation...?
    There is a lot on this forum which has been already answered / addressed but the database must support it, in other words the characterset must support it. Among others, see Re: XML-Document with special characters for instance.
    Conversion like you are doing (&#x103) is not needed.

  • Unwanted / Special Characters in XML File Output

    Hello Seniors,
    I am downloading an XML File which has some code from include's. The XML file is well formatted and the output is fine when I downloaded programs. But this include is from user exits and the code has some commented lines in it also with a blank line in between. Now the problem is that I am getting a "VT" in the XML file which is an unwanted character where there is a blank line in the include "ZXRSAU01". Other than this include, all other includes are downloaded fine.
    Here is the code from the include "ZXRSAU01":
         select single * from knvv where kunnr = l_s_icctrcst-kunnr
                                    and  vkorg = l_s_icctrcst-vkorg
                                    and  vtweg = l_s_icctrcst-vtweg
                                    and  spart = l_s_icctrcst-spart.
    Here is the output in the XML File:
         select single * from knvv where kunnr = l_s_icctrcst-kunnr
                                    and  vkorg = l_s_icctrcst-vkorg VT
                                    and  vtweg = l_s_icctrcst-vtweg
                                    and  spart = l_s_icctrcst-spart.
    Please give me a solutions for this. Each of your answers are very important and will addressed with the best deserved.
    Thanks and regards,
    Chaitanya.

    Hello Madhan,
    Firstly, Thank You for the reply. We cannot remove the space in that include because the system is not the original system. Please let me inform you that this is a 4.6C system. We have used CDATA to get the code as it is onto the XML file. I observed that, firstly, the character "#" has come into the internal table with the read report itself. In the debug I saw it to be "0B" in the binary format, but in the downloaded XML file output, it is displayed as "VT". Please let me know how to get rid of this special/unwanted character.
    Thanks and regards,
    Chaitanya.

  • Saving business objects into xml file

    I have the following XML file parsed into a DOM tree, with 2 different types of nodes "TestCase" and
    "RealCase". Then I mapped each type to a different type of business object, TestCaseObj and RealCaseObj.
    Now, there may be addition of new objects, or modifications to the data stored in the business objects
    by my application. Eventually when I save the business objects back into the XML file, how should I go
    about doing that?
    <ROOT>
    <TestCase TestID="T1">
         <Element1>Data1</Element1>
         <Element2>Data2</Element2>
    </TestCase>
    <TestCase TestID="T2">
         <Element1>Data1</Element1>
         <Element2>Data2</Element2>
    </TestCase>
    <RealCase ID="R1">
         <Element1>Data1</Element1>
         <Element2>Data2</Element2>
         <Element3>Data3</Element3>
    </RealCase>
    <RealCase ID="R2">
         <Element1>Data1</Element1>
         <Element2>Data2</Element2>
         <Element3>Data3</Element3>
    </RealCase>
    </ROOT>

    The DocumentBuilder class does not allow you to parse a portion of the xmlfile. Therefore, it will not be possible to read "TestCase" into the DOM without bringing in "RealCase" nodes as well. As such, these codes will parse the entire xml file into DOM:
    DocumentBuilder builder = builderFactory.newDocumentBuilder();
    Document document = builder.parse( xmlFile );
    However, your problem can be solved by reading only "TestCase" nodes in DOM, as follows:
    NodeList elementNodeList =
    elementNode.getElementsByTagName("TestCase");
    Your codes will then change the data in the elementNodeList, without affecting "RealCase" although it is loaded into DOM. You can be sure that elementNodeList contains only "TestCase" nodes.
    Once you have made your changes, save the DOM back to the XML file, using the serializer method as discussed earlier.
    Good luck.

  • Web.XML files

    Hi there, i am new at working with the Java dev tools, but i really like them.
    my question is regarding the Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8.
    I am getting a bit annoyed due to the fact, the everytime enter the studio(after closing it), i find that every "web.xml" file in my open projects are changed, and always with the same values.
    Does anyone here has had the same problem? And if so, how to overcome it?
    thank you in advance!

    example: when i create a new web application, the JSE8 creates web.xml file with this information:
    <listener>
    <listener-class>com.sun.portal.common.logging.impl.LoggerServletContextListenerImpl</listener-class>
    </listener>
    <listener>
    <listener-class>com.sun.portal.container.portlet.impl.CacheManagerContextListenerImpl</listener-class>
    </listener>
    Since that i don't need the listenner, i remove it from the Web.xml file, and save (ctrl+s), then i go on with my work, and after finishing, i close JSE8.
    the next time i open JSE8, it creates again exactly like the first time, with the listener> text .
    I have tryed to after saving mark the web.xml file as read-only to prevent , but then when i start up JSE8 again, it gives an error.
    Can anyone help me with this?

  • Error while saving the FM8 XML file

    Hello,
    While saving the FM8 XML file, an error message appears (see attached screen shot).
    Is there a solution to resolve this issue? Please suggest.

    Hi,
    This type of error is non-descript and could be caused by any number of things. It is impossible to troubleshoot from here based solely on that message. Let me ask a couple of questions, though:
    - Are you using structured FrameMaker? If so, are you using a structured app that has worked successfully before? In other words, did this just suddenly start happening to an otherwise-stable process?
    - Is there anything unusual about your layout; that is, anything other than a single text flow with graphics?

    TERMINATION_DATE VARCHAR(32) path 'TerminateDate/substring(text(), 1, 32)',
    So I updated my query to be
    SELECT /*+ CURSOR_SHARING_EXACT */
    FROM XMLTable(
    '/HR/EMP'
    passing xmltype( bfilename('DATA_PUMP_DIR','emp.xml'), nls_charset_id('CHAR_CS') )
    columns
    first_name varchar2(30) path 'FNAME',
    last_name varchar2(30) path 'LNAME',
    comments varchar2(4000) path 'COMMENT/substring(text(),1,4000)'
    The query runs without an error when the <comment> tag has 4000 or less characters but still errors out with it is more than 4000.
    I found an alternative method to do the SUBSTRING here in Herald ten Dam's reponse in Re: A view over XML that is not 1:1
    code varchar2(30) path 'substring(code,1,3)',
    so I tried this:
    SELECT /*+ CURSOR_SHARING_EXACT */
    FROM XMLTable(
    '/HR/EMP'
    passing xmltype( bfilename('DATA_PUMP_DIR','emp.xml'), nls_charset_id('CHAR_CS') )
    columns
    first_name varchar2(30) path 'FNAME',
    last_name varchar2(30) path 'LNAME',
    comments varchar2(4000) path 'substring(COMMENT,1,4000)'
    but that doesn't work either.
    How can I extract the first 4000 characters of the <COMMENT> tag so that the query doesn't fail.
    We are not using any other XMLDB features at this time. This is the first we've started looking into using Oracle built in XML features, so we might not have setup something that other's might know to specifically setup to start using the XML features in Oracle 11.1
    Thanks in advance,
    Wally

    This is regardless of the COMMENTS tag being 4000 characters or more and the same with the ideas from Odie.
    WallyNo idea if it is an issue with your version. I don't have your version to test but following works for me. Does this simple test work?

  • How to export special characters into an XML file?

    Dear experts,
    We read files from our customers and save data into our customized table without any character changed, including some address fields. In those address fields, some special characters (not in our code page) are also kept. When we want to write these address fields into an XML file or flat file, the special charcters become "##" or not readable, can anyone help us to solve this issue?
    Question1: How to write special code to an external file?
    Question2: how to use 'CALL TRANSFORMATION' from an internal table to an XML file?
    Your answer is highly appreciated!
    Joanne

    Hi Joanne.
    Please check the below link.
    CALL TRANSFORMATION
    Before that u have to create one transformation program in STRANS tcode for using it in call transformation statement.
    Hope it will be useful.

  • What Characters Cannot Be Used In Titles In An XML File?

    Forgive me for asking what I feel like should be an easy question to answer on my own.  I am Googling and cannot seem to find it anywhere, though I remember reading it at one time.  I know that if I type an ampersand (&) in one of my podcast titles that the XML file will not function correctly until I remove the ampersand and replace it with the word "and."  I am wondering if this happens with the question mark character (?).  I would like to title one of my podcasts as a question, but would like to avoid the hassle ahead of time.  What symbols can I not use in titles/summaries in my XML file, and is there a way to use these symbols in titles/summaries without confusing the XML file?

    You are fine with question marks, commas, colons and semi colons, underscores, hyphens and exclamation points as long as they are within tage such as 'title' and 'itunes:subtitle'. As you say you must not have an ampersand by itself anywhere because it's used in XML to indicate the start of a code sequence which is then never completed. You can use the code
    &amp;
    instead, or indeed the workd 'and' of course.
    Diacriticals - é, ü etc - are OK as long as you type them directly into the feed or whatever is making it. For more unusual characters see this page:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#commonmistakes
    and scroll down to 'Using Named HTML Character Entitities'.
    As Robert says, never construct your text in a word processor and copy it in; this way you may embed invisible control codes; and quote marks are likely to be 'smart quotes' ('curtly quotes'). Either of these will wreck your feed completely.

  • Problem with base64 encoding an xml file with accented characters

    Oracle 10.2.0.1.0 Enterprise Edition running under windows 2003 server
    DB Characterset UTF-8
    I have a routine which takes an xml file and base64 encodes it, and the base64encoded text is stored in a clob column of a table.
    The xml file is stored in UTF-8 format.
    The routine works correctly, except when there are accented characters.
    I am using dbms_lob.loadclobfrom file to load the file.

    added code tag for last base64 encoded object

    Not sure if utl_i18n is already there in version prior to 11.2.0.2.
    But on above mentioned version I can do the simplified method
    SQL> SELECT utl_i18n.raw_to_char (
             utl_encode.base64_encode (

    I saved a Pages doc yesterday and today I can't open it because I get a message that says "can't open doc because an index.xml file is missing."  Help!

    Pages v5 documents do not have an internal index.xml file. When you attempt to open one of these with the older Pages '09, you will get that dialog. Double-click the document icon, or right-click, and open with Pages v5 to access the document contents.
