Saving File Issues

So the mantra 'Save, and save often" usually serves one well, except, apparently, with iBooks Author.   My save path was to a Dropbox folder that my boss and I shared, but the folder was filling up.  I was asked to move the book content to a share drive we have on our network.
Last week, I moved the file with ten and a half completed chapters onto the share drive, off of Dropbox and continued to hit the 'save' button frequently. Silly me, I thought that it was saving to my hard drive, as no alert box popped up to say  "Hey, Doofus-your save path is BROKEN!  Fix it NOW!"  So instead, I've saved, and saved often, and it has gone into a black hole.  It's not on my MacPro, not on the network, nowhere.
There isn't even an option to 'Save As' or 'Save To' within iBook author.  No way to change the path that a book has been saved to.  No way to save it to multiple locations, other than using 'Duplicate' and they saving that duplicate file with a different name.
It is probably pointless, but does anyone have a solution to this issue?
And Apple iBook Author Developers, please add the following functionality:
1. An alert box pop up when the established save path breaks.  (For instance, saving to a G:\\ drive, when none exists should return an error when G:\\ is not there)
2. An option to 'Save As' or 'Save to' to allow developers to save to multiple sources and/or save multiple designs for client review.
I have to recreate about 50 hours worth of work, which I thought wouldn't be too bad, because I'd put a preview on my iPad two days ago.  EXCEPT, that, for some reason, despite there being no less than 6 previews on my iPad (it never overwrites and is not easy to remove a preview), no matter which one is selected, it always goes to the left most version of the book-the old one.  I've selected each copy of the six multiple times, and they all open the one on the top left of my screen.  I'm reluctant to even delete it for fear that I will also lose the version I know I previewed the other day from which I hope to pull some screen caps to restore my work more expediently.
Any ideas.
The only thing that prevents me from crying, screaming, and departing for the nearest bar open at 9:30am at the notion that I've lost over a chapter of work is that I also previewed my content on the iPad the other day.  I cannot reverse engineer this to restore my content, but I *can* take screen caps and rebuild pages.
The long and the short of it?  Check your save paths, because sometimes, just saving isn't enough!

1. I think Apple leaves such matter to the user!
2. You can duplicate and re-rename your book file - which is basically a "save as" function ending up with a       renamed identical copy of the version you are working on. I rename by adding Ver1 next is Ver2 - or simply and a number or letter to make a logical sequence,  it saves changing the file name and getting confused a week later.
Previews in iPad stay until you delete them, it does not delete because its assumed that you use a preview for that purpose - to check your current version.  Your next preview will have whatever you added after the last preview ditto 4,5,6 times as you found.
The preview shows in the iBooks shelf and can be deleted using EDIT>select and tap > Delete.
The  open same file quirk is dealt with in many posts,  its best to avoid by using preview only to check your latest batch of work and then delete it.

The question about "saving as"  or to make a backup / duplicate  copy ( also save in two locations at least)
obviates the need to keep multiple previews "just in case"....  having a backup iBA file is far more "safe" than relying on  Preview on your iPad.
Any ideas.

The solution is simple really, adopt a work flow that involves saving your work at regular stages and at the same time make a full back up label it in a logical order and save in at least  two different locations / machines / devises.  Use preview for that  purpose and delete when its done its  job.
If you do all that, the last one is.... find a quiet corner and promise that you will be good and help old  ex IT workers across a busy road if ONLY ( your chosen diety) will leave your files in one piece.

  • TextEdit Saving File Issues

I am Mac OS X (10.8.5) with TextEdit (1.8). I am trying to fix a couple of annoying issues.
    New Documents
    1. Some times I am able to save new documents just fine. Other times when I get the dialogue window to specify the name and place where the doc should be saved, after hitting save, it will not save. The document title bar keeps saying "Untitled — Edited." The "Edited" phrase is always grayed out. Each time I try to save it again, the title bar changes incrementally "Untitled 2 — Edited," "Untitled 3 — Edited," and so forth. I searched the entire drive and the file does not exist.
If I completely quit out of the application and re-launch, it will save new document with no problems. Why is this happening?

  • Issue with Saved File Icons

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with the icons for saved files in Premiere CS6 and After Effects CS6.
I've just recently made the transition from 5.5 to 6 and so far everything has been hunky dory. However, today I found that my system wouldn't recognise the saved files from Premiere, AE and Photoshop. So I right clicked on them and chose 'open with', found the correct programs and tried it that way. Photoshop worked fine, but Premiere and AE now have icons that, basically are a white square with a small 'PR' and 'AE' in the centre (same as the exe files). These icons do open up their corresponding projects, there is no issue with that, it's just a bit annoying. the only thing I did today was uninstall my CS 5.5 versions and download some AE templates from Adobe.
Anyone know of a way to reset the icons so they have their original look?
    Cheers
    John

I did today was uninstall my CS 5.5 versions
It's not a good idea to uninstall older versions after a newer version installed.  Things to tend to get messed up.  Always uninstall the old ones first.
    Try reinstalling CS6.

  • Saved File Groups Issue in Bridge Center - script problem?

    Hi all,
I tried posting this in the Bridge forum with no replies. After browsing through this forum I'm wondering if this is a script problem?
I have the CS2 premium, and use all packages. The problem I have is saving and retrieving files in the 'Saved File Groups' of Bridge Center. I can save Photoshop files no problem, but the idea is to be able to save other files from open applications in the group and then to recall them later. I can save Illustrator files with others in a group but only Photoshop files open, and it ignores the saved Illustrator files.
With my InDesign files, it does not even recognise them as files to be saved. I can have a file open, click on "Save open files into a file group" and it will come up with a little box saying there are no open files to save!
    OS - XP sp2. Bridge 1.0.2
If this can be helped with scripting, please explain clearly, I am a graphic designer and no very little indeed about scripting.
    Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Thysje Arthur

    Hi,
Do you mean that Windows displays “Network Shortcuts” folder when you click “Browse” icon? If so, please check if you configure the default local file location to the “Network Shortcuts” folder. You could refer to the image below to find the option of the default
    local file location.

  • Saving file to network location

    Hello all of you,
I encounter an issue with InDesign CS5 when it comes to opening and saving files to a network location. I added my company's ftp server to Windows 7 and it appears correctly in the My computer overview (there's an additional line besides the hard discs, DVD player, et cetera). The connection to the server functions fine, no issues here. No problem exists when opening files from this server from within InDesign; I can do whatever I want. Only when I try to save a file the network location isn't displayed anymore within the My computer overview in the InDesign "Save as" dialog box. The network location however appears in the pull-down menu at the top of the dialog box (and nested as part of My computer ...), but when I pick it there, it won't show the context of the server. Additionally logging onto the server (it's IP-based and anonymous logon) doesn't change a thing. Trying to save in the empty server space InDesign returns a "Can't save here" error message.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue? Building the document locally and then copying back to the server isn't a solution, because all external content that is linked in the document resides on the server.
    Best regards,
    Luc Peulen

Scott is basically right. Lots of ID users work over network connections without issue, but if something is going wrong, it's the first place to look. I wouldn't have thought it possible to work in InDesign over a FTP connection!
If you can get Windows to access that server as if it were just another drive (using "Map network drive" in Explorer) then it should work normally. However, a generic Adobe phone tech wouldn't help you figure out why it wouldn't work - there are simply too many variables in a network environment for a generic first-level tech to figure out.
In the short term, the only solution I can suggest is:
Retrieve all of that external content that is linked in the document, and the InDesign document, at the same time, & store it on your local hard drive.
    Do your work.
    Save & package.
Upload the entire package back to the server.
Long-term, you'd need to talk to your own IT staff to troubleshoot the connection between your workstation and the FTP server. If you can get information about your network from them to post here, I bet that someone will make suggestions to pass on to your IT staff that will actually work.

  • CS6 & OSX 10.6.8 - saving files directly to the server does not work (most of the time)

    Hi there,
we just switched from OSX 10.5.8 to 10.6.8
OSX was installed on a new partition of the harddisk
    Then installed CS 5
Then installed CS 6 via (adobe creative cloud)
With CS6 we got also the problem with saving files to the server (program error)
It happens mostly with photoshop, sometimes with Illustrator.
I read a lot of posting regarding the same problem but didn´t found a real solution yet.
I am also wondering that there seems to be no solution for this now, because most of the posting i read are 1 year old.

  • Problem Saving Files CS5

After years of no problems I am suddenly having a problem saving files.  This started with CS4 a few months ago, and has continued with CS5.
When I attempt to Save As... I get an error message:
Could not save as "{location & filename}" because the file is already in use or was left open by another application.
The only place the file could be considered "in use" or "left open" would be due to Bridge.
I get this error message whether saving as jpg, psd or any other file type.  If I retry saving the file then it will usually save properly after several attempts.  But if I close Bridge then it will save the first time every time.  I get the same error whether saving as the original file name or with a new name.
I have been using Bridge to preview and select the images I want to edit for a very long time.  But this problem didn't start showing up until a short time ago, so I wonder about a problem introduced with an update??    Those who use Bridge know that it remains running in the background while the image is processed through Camera RAW and PS.  There has never been a reason to close Bridge when working in PS and it is not very convenient to do so just to save a file.
If anyone has a solution to this I would like to hear about it.
    Thanks,

    Hi Jimcarke,
My problem is very similar. Just Upgraded to CS5 from CS4.
Graphic files, no problem.  I can save 80Mb and 30 layered mixed graphic files, even after editing.
No JPEG's in the stack though. Perhaps I'll have a look at that!
With simple JPEG's at 1.9mb, after editing, then as soon as I enter 'Save As,' Bingo the great blank screen'
Problem seems worse if I get as far as rotating the image, then everything disappears instantly.
Customer services have suggested all the usual remedies and now I can't open a file or edit anything
I'm back to the insufficient RAM issue.
I've just 'given up' and back to CS4 again and will try to get some work done for the morning.
All good fun and an interesting way to spend a very sunny Sunday afternoon. (GB)
    Regards
    John

  • Windows 7 + Office 2007 & 2010 VERY slow saving files to on 2008 R2 files shares

OK I have litterally tried everthing in every forum there is to resolve this. It is only happening on our Win 7 workstations that are running Office 2007 or 2010.  Our file shares are on a 2008 R2 server. Opening and saving files on the shares using
Office is very slow. I have tried updates and server and workstations are 100% up to date. The server is only running as a file share server. Nothing else on it. We have completely set up new PC's to test with clean Win 7 installs and nothing else except Office.
Nothing else on the network is slow at all. I have tried all the hotfixes in the world that could relate to this from many hours of research into possible causes. I have done the EnableShellDataCaching fix, the SMB 2 disable fix, the windows search/indexer
fix, the pdfmaker fix, the lookup wizard add-in fix, the go to the newest firmware on the cisco switch fix, update workstation nic driver fix, the Trusted Locations in Excel fix, and about a dozen other fixes. NOTHING WORKS! This has brought our Win 7
and Office 2007/2010 users to a halt in their ability to do their jobs. Our company is suffering badly. And did I mention that our IT dept is getting a lot of heat and criticism about it. FYI we are running an IBM E5450 with dual multi-thread
multi-core(8) 3 Mhz Intel Xeon processors with 2008 R2 64-bit, 12 GB ram, and the server is using litterally no resources. Network connected is Gigabit. This has to be a Microsoft issue with 2008/Win 7/Office 2007&2010. This has become a nightmare for
out IT dept and has consumed weeks of our time when we need to be working on other projects. Can anyone solve this. Microsoft: Please release a REAL fix for this that we can run on the server or push via GPO to the workstations.

    Hi,
Take a look at this and see if it helps:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
    also
Office 2010 components, such as Word 2010?
At this time, I suggest trying to start Excel in safe mode. Then, open the Excel file or create a new Excel file, and save the file to the network again.
Start the Excel program in safe mode
    1.       Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to Microsoft Office.
    2.        Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the Microsoft Excel.
If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Excel program, we can try to disable them. Normally, you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Excel program:
    Disable add-ins
Click File menu, click Options >  Add-in, click Go button in the Manage: Com-in Add.
Check if there are any add-ins, clear the checkbox to disable them.
Close the Office program and restart it.
Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart the Office program, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.
Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience.  If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.
    ====
Is the performance also slow when you trying to save the Excel file to other network path?
At this time, we can also try to test this issue in the clean boot mode.
    Test in Clean boot Mode
    ===============
Let’s disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps:
    1.       Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.
    2.        Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    3.       Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This should not affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later.
    What’s the result now?
How to return from the Clean Boot state
After the troubleshooting, we can return from the clean boot state:
    1.       Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.
    2.       On the "General" tab, click "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services".
    3.       Click OK. Click Restart when you are prompted to restart your computer.

  • Cmmd + O opens saved files as "Untitled."

In CS4, when I open a file via CMMD + O, the file opens as "untitled." The same result exists when opening a file via menu. However, if I select the file in the Finder folder and right click to open in Fireworks, the saved file's name is retained. — I was wondering if there is a fix for this issue.

Deselect the Open as Untitled option, and open a file. After that, all
files will open with their original file names.

  • I have difficulty pasting text into the file name field(prefix only) while saving files.

    OS: WinXP sp3
    FF: 3.6.3
I have difficulty pasting text into the file name field (prefix only) while saving files. example: File name is Pic123.jpg and I want to rename it ABC123.jpg and I have ABC loaded into the WinXPsp3 clipboard. When I highlight\right-click\delete "Pic" then attempt to paste the ABC, I get either no reaction, or upon multiple paste attempts, the ABC is appended to the end of the file, after the extension, as "Pic123.jpgABC". If I delete this unwanted suffix, or repeat the process several times, eventually I can delete the unwanted portion of the prefix and paste the desired text. Sometimes it works fine first try, but mostly it takes several tries. I'm using Firefox 3.6.3 but the problem existed in whatever previous version I had too. This issue only occurs when using the delete/paste; I can always manually change the name by typing. Thank you for your help.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • How can i get my saved files from 4.1 to show up on 5.n?

how can i get my saved files from 4.1 to show up on 5.n?

The document saving portion of the app was moved to the printer control app for the 5.0 update. You can use file sharing to copy the files from your device with 4.1, and then copy them in to the printer control app after. This can either be done wirelessly, or by USB through itunes. The document below will show you how to do both options to get them copied off of the device. Then you simply do the same steps in the printer control app to copy files back in.

  • Satellite A660 - cannot see saved files

The problem is with a game that I have.
I can see a file that I downloaded from the net to play, but those files from the game that I have saved do not show up when I look for them they don't show up. But when I view compatibility files they show, but that does me no good since I cannot send them on to other who will need to use them. The game in question is Civilization 3 Conquests, but I have a PC with it on and did not have this problem.
So where can I find the setting to make them visible?

    >... cannot see saved files
Is this general problem with your notebook or you have noticed this with game files only?
I mean it is not easy to say anything about this specific issue.
Im not gamer so I cannot comment some game files problem.
Try to find some gaming forum where people discuss about Civilization 3 Conquests and ask if someone else has noticed the same problem.

  • Illustrator CS6 hangs saving files to local HD while having multiple server share points mounted

    Mac OS 10.6
    Illustrator CS6
Illustrator CS6 hangs (spinning beach ball) when saving files to the computer's local HD while having multiple server share points mounted.
I am NOT opening or saving the file to or from a server.
The server is mounted so that I can move my saved file to it once complete.
Unmounting the servers fixes the problem and Illustrator CS6 returns to being normal (not causing a spinning beach ball).
    This is repeatable, not intermitent.

We were having similar issues working over a network. I believe it's a Mac OS 10.6 issue, something to do with the Mac finder searching for file dates or metadata on the servers. From what I understand, this has been fixed in OS 10.7. We can't yet move to 10.7 and after trying many possible fixes, found that a Mac finder alternative, Path Finder, fixed most server delays. It's not free, but you can give it a 30 day trial to see if it fixes your issue. Here is a link to discussions about other suggested fixes:

  • Saving\updating issue or bug in C5?

When I update buttons or even text in captions, the changes do not seem to be taking effect after I close the project, so I have to continuously go back and make the changes either on my local mathine or if another developer opens the files from our network. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
    Thanks.

    Rick,
Typically we use the network drive to store and pass the projects back and forth. I am checking to see if others are actually editing on the network drive. I am experiencing this on my local HD as well, with changes that I made last week not being reflected when I open the file locally today (no network drive involved). I am wondering if this is a cached project issue.
    Thanks

Subject: Editing Saving\updating issue or bug in C5?
    Hi there
From what you are asking it would seem that your mode of operation is to make edits to a project while the project is on the network? If so, that's a pretty awful way of operating and is fraught with issues.
The preferred way of operating is to only edit a Captivate file while it is on your local hard drive. Then if you want it on the network for others to make edits, copy it there. When others need to edit, they copy it locally, edit and copy it back.
This also requires careful coordination so that simultaneous edits aren't made. Then one person saves back to the network and his/her changes are saved, the person number two saves back and blows their changes away and replaces them with the changes they made.
In other words, in this situation, whoever saved last wins. So you need to be very careful about coordinating who is making updates and when so that only one person is making and saving changes at any given time.
    Cheers... Rick
