Saving internet file now results is meaningless alphanumeric file name instead of doc name

A few weeks ago reader X suddenly started puting all the tools (like save file) back in the top of the window. They were missing for quite some time and very frustrating. I could find no way to bring them back.  Now, however, whenever I save an internet file, a short meaningless alphanumeric name is inserted rather than using the file name/document name that has always been used before. Is there a way to return this to previous behaviour?

Hi,
I'm sorry you are having this problem, here is another post about the same problem, where the cause of the problem is described:

  • Old mac audio files now appear as executable unix files

    a long time mac user, back in 95 & 96 i had a PB165 that allowed me to record some of my daughters first words as she spoke into the computer. long ago i saved them to floppy disks. i got an external floppy drive with a usb port and was all ready to transfer these files and create a cd of these sounds but they now appear as "Executable Unix files". First i blindly tried to open one of them using iTunes but there was no luck there. Then i searched this site on how to open "executable unix files" and got some information about using Terminal. Have never used Terminal before and tried to follow the directions but had no luck.
    I've probably missed something easy, but have spent a bit of time trying to do this without any luck. So am humbly asking for help as I try to retrieve these nuggets of sounds that can not be reproduced.
    thanks,
    david

    Just adding an extension won't change what is in the file. If you know what the file is (.wav, .aif, etc), then adding the appropriate extension will help the system figure out what to open them as.
    Do the files have any extensions now? If iTunes can't open them they may be in an old format, such as a System 7 sound. In that case, you might give PlaySound a try.
    Edit: Other converter applications for those old sound files are SystemSound (free) and File Juicer (not free).

  • "File Now Available" when opening Excel File

    When I open an excel file from using the OpenFileDialog VB, there is a bit of a delay.  After a few seconds a dialog box pops up saying:
    "File Now Available"
    This has two buttons "Read-Write" and "Cancel"
    1) How do turn the alerts off and have it default to Read Write?
    2) The delay in opening can cause issues as the user will not know that there is in fact a delay.  The user may then proceed through my form and press the OK button which will cause an error.  How do I show a status bar to alert the user that there is some Excel process running in the background (i.e. slowling opening the file) when using the OpenFileDialog? Worse case scenario I can set the enable property of the OK button to False until the file is open.
    Thanks
    EM

    Two thougths -
    Use this:
    Private Function IsFileOpen(strFullFilePath As String) As Boolean
    'http://www.xcelfiles.com/IsFileOpen.html
    'Check if File is Open.  Works for Excel files, but not text files.
        Dim hdlFile As Long
        'Error is generated if you try opening a File for ReadWrite lock >> MUST BE OPEN!
        On Error GoTo errsub:
        hdlFile = FreeFile
        Open strFullFilePath For Random Access Read Write Lock Read Write As hdlFile
        IsFileOpen = False
        Close hdlFile
        Exit Function
    errsub: 'Someone has file open
        IsFileOpen = True
        Close hdlFile
    End Function
    Or just access the Excel file without "opening it" at all using OLE DB (use SQL to modify it) or ExecuteExcel4Macro.
    Cheers

  • I mistakenly saved a download, and checked the "always do this for thid type of file" now I cannot open a file without saving it first, because it does not take me to that same dialog box.

    When you open a file from an email, you get a dialog box Open or Save this file. I wanted to save a particular file, so I clicked Save. The problem is, I had already clicked on "do this every time for files like this" so now it won't give me the dialog box back for when I just want to open a file, not save it. I have searched Options, to no avail.

    '''''"always do this for thid type of file"''''' means exactly what it says: '''<u>always</u>''' .
    Go to Tools > Options > Applications, locate and click on the Content Type for the item, change Action to "Always ask". This will cause a dialog to open giving you a choice of opening with an appropriate plugin for Firefox or saving the item to your hard drive. See:

  • All Realtime Media Files now appear as Macromedia Flash files.

    Help sought for a friend...who can no longer access the majority of his years worth of accumulated media files and i'm stumped -
    For no known reason, upon restart of a MacBook running 10.4, every single media file that was originally Realtime Player format,
    now appears as a "Macromedia Flash (.flv) file.  None opens upon icon click.
    There was no installation (at least none that my friend initiated) of any new software that would explain the 'conversion.'  Meanwhile,
    the immediate objective is to restore all of the original-formatting.   It appears that only these RealTime files were affected .
    Any idea on what can be done to rectify this?   As I understand it the Flash app version -  is  7.   version 10 was uninstalled in
    an effort to see if the files would be recognized as Real Player files once again after uninstall and restart.
    All YouTube or other downloaded files that were in RealPlayer format are now identified as .flvs, and upon attempting startup of
    Real Player  for some reason that App crashes and will no longer open.
    Ideas?
    Thanks alot,

    maybe you already tried this,
    but what happens if you select one of the files in the finder,

  • [JS, CS4] file.Copy() results in 0 KB file

    Hello,
    In a nutshell, a script goes through some links, copies the link to a given destination, checks if there's a corresponding .CDR and then copies that to the same destination. It works absolutely perfectly, except for a seemingly random link - when the linked file and CDR are copied, 0 KB copies are created in the destination folder
    This is a snippet of the code, for copying the link (the CDR copy bit is basically the same, just with a bit of string work to get the correct extension):
    function normalLinkCopier(myLinks){
    for (i = 0; i < myLinks.length; i++) {
      var myLink = myLinks[i];
      // Capture the location of the linked file.
      var myLinkFile = new File(myLink.filePath);
      // Capture the destination of the copied link - uses the folder selected previously and the link's name.
      var myNewLinkFile = new File(myFolder + "/" + myLink.name);
    //~   alert ("Original: " + myLinkFile + myLink.size + "\n\nCopy :" + myNewLinkFile)
    // Copy the linked file to the destination
      myLinkFile.copy(myNewLinkFile);
    The alert tells me the correct path and name of the original file (myLinkFile), and the correct path and name of the destination file (myNewLinkFile). The original file exists and it has a size > 0 KB. However, when the copy function runs, it somehow makes the copy 0 KB.
    One time when I was trying it I received this error message:
    IOError: Cannot find the folder "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Scripts\XHTML For Digital Editions\null\<the erroneous file's name was here>.eps
    I have not been able to replicate the above error, however.
    To add to the weirdness, when I delete the link that is causing problems, the problem switches to another seemingly random link (it was links[33] originally, then it switches to links[0]). Delete that, then it switches again...but it's only ever a problem for one link at a time.
    I cannot see what changes between getting the link's path and copying it - and why it only happens on one random link at a time.
    If anyone can shed any light on the situation I will be extremely grateful!

    I tried putting the loop contents inside a function, then I tried putting the new File lines inside separate functions, but all to no avail. Thanks for the idea though.
    I've discovered something else about this error though. For two links in the document, A and B:
    Select A, run the script, it works fine.
    Select B, run the script, it creates the 0 KB files.
    Select A again, run the script and 0 KB files are created.
    Although I don't know if that opens up any avenues for me to explore...

  • File Share Pod in Meeting Room: File Names Changed by Connect 9?

    In Connect 9.1 I create meeting rooms. After I have one "just right" I move it to the My Templates folder, to be used in future as the basis for other meeting rooms. The room that I put in My Templates folder contains a File Share Pod, and in that I uploaded three PDF files (small file size).These PDF files had names like "Course Journal" and "Job Aid".
    BUT, when I created a new meeting room based on the template room, the File Share Pod in the new room contained the right number of files, but with names like "/p4cofh5hqse/".
    How can I make Connect use my file names instead of the names it assigns?
    My alternatives now seem to be two:
    - In each of my new rooms, open the File Share Pod and rename each file (if I make 5 rooms, and each has 5 files, you can see this will take a lot of time and wasted energy)
    - Don't put files in the original meeting room's File Share Pod. Then upload files into each new room's File Share Pod from either my local machine or from Shared Content or My Content. Again, a lot of work.
    Thanks, Colleagues, for posting some suggestions/answers!

    It looks like it is taking the name from the URL for the content object. Try uploading the files to your Content library and give them a custom URL, like course_journal and job_aid. Then place those files in the file share pod of the template room and see if it takes the name or the url to the rooms created from it. Maybe not a 100% solution, but may be a good enough work around to save you more pain and effort.
    This sounds like a bug to me. Maybe worth reaching out to support to see if they can qualify it as one or identify the root problem causing the issue.

    So my dumb ***  downloaded a file from the internet today from an untrusted source and now I can't find it anywhere except for when I click on the downloads button on the safari web browser (i.e. )
    I clicked on the file it shows that I downloaded and this pops up
    "Safari can’t show the file “4-More-PeopleAreUsingCellPhonestoListentoOnlineRadioinTheirCars.xlsx” in the Finder because “4-More-PeopleAreUsingCellPhonestoListentoOnlineRadioinTheirCars.xlsx” has moved since you downloaded it."
    I looked for it in the finder window under the "downloads" folder, looked under "All my files" sorted it by the date added, clicked on the magnifying glass next to the only place I can see it and the file still didnt show up in finder.
    help, anyone?

    I have no idea why it disappeared from your Mac. But I trust this reassures you there does not seem to be anything malicious about the file.
    You might want to search on your Mac using some of the key words in the file.
         Not that I am denying the results but out of curiousity how did you manage to download and locate the file when I didn't provide you with the website from which I downloaded it from?
         The thing is, what I supposedly downloaded wasn't supposed to be an xlsx file nor any type of text file for that matter. I got it from a website called ryushare.com.
    I also tried to search for it with the use of the key words in the file you found and no luck. Any way to know for a fact it's not going to affect my computer? Also, any way I can look for the file and delete it through terminal?
    Thanks again Eustace

    Sounds like you opened and saved it in CC, so now you need to go back to CC and either complete the project there, or export to IDML to take it back into CS6.

    I tried to undo it but the app crashed.
    I am hoping there's like a previously saved version of my file in iCloud somewhere.

    No, iOS does not do short term incremental back ups to iCloud such as you get with Time Capsule.It backs up when you do soo manually, or if set properly, when the device is plugged in and connected to WiFi. It will not have saved your changes as of 10 minutes prior.

  • In 10.4, an internet audio file now opens with Quicktime?

    Many thanks in advance for your attention.
    When I was using 10.3 (and before), when clicking on an audio file on the internet, RealPlayer 9 automatically opened.
    One could see the % of the file being downloaded and then (quickly), one would automatically hear the audio clip.
    Most often, I am talking about audio clips available on NPR (National Public Radio).
    Since I have installed 10.4 (now at 10.4.3), when I click on the same audio file, now Quicktime opens instead. And then nothing happens. Quicktime opens, a Quicktime Player is seen, but I hear nothing and nothing tells me whether the audio file is being downloaded, is ready to be listened to, or anything.
    With Quicktime 7, is RealPlayer now supposedly superfluous?
    - Ross

    Many thanks QuickTimeKirk,
    But think I need more step-by-step directions.
    1. I have RealPlayer (9) already.
    2. MIME settings in QuickTime Preference Pane. Set it to use RealPlayer for the Format .SMIL How?
    3. In the QuickTime Preference Pane, there is a box for .SMIL, one box only, under "Miscellaneous." It IS unchecked already. But NPR still opens with QuickTime.
    4. By "Change your Mac to use Real Player to open .SMIL files - ." I assume you mean, I will be on NPR, download a QT file and then try to change it to a RealPlayer file under "Get Info?"
