Saving playlists & finding music after imac/itunes upgrade

I was on an imac G4 (with iTunes 5.0.1) and upgraded to an imac G5 (with iTunes 4.7.1 installed). My question is how do I save the playlists I created in iTunes on the old computer? Do I first upgrade to 5.0.1 on the new computer and transfer some file or preference file from the "old" itunes?
Also, regarding moving music to a new computer, after the switch my new iTunes had about 100 songs less than the old iTunes. After all the music was transferred to the new computer I performed "consolidate library" and it did find some songs that did not get transferred off of the old imac, but I'm still "missing" songs. What can I do to locate those?

Hello Nathan,
Two things going on here... you need to upgrade the G5 to iTunes 5.0.1 and the files that have already been accessed by this version should be made available to you again... the older 4.7.1 does not fully understand the latest formats and there has been changes made....
Have a backup copy of the iTunes Library file and if you still have the older version iTunes 4 Music library file keep that as well... that is where all the data you want to keep is.
When you have updated it would be a good idea to start fresh and put all the music data files from the old G4 again into the new iTunes Music folder on the G5 and put the saved libray file from the G4 in the iTunes folder... if there is one already there move it to the desktop and edit the name of the backup to be iTunes Library... note you will have to trash the files you have moved but only if you still have the originals.
Follow the instructions here and also include the Tiger 10.4.2 combo update at the bottom of the page and insert it where told.
take care Nathan and let's know how you get on ..... TP

Unless you'd signed up to iTunes Match then they won't be in the Cloud, only music purchased from iTunes (if you are in a country where music can be re-downloaded) will be there. Have you not still got it on your computer and/or on a backup which you can use to sync it back to the iPad ?

  • WiFi self assigned IP and no internet connection after OS & iTunes upgrade

I have two likely related issues that started as a direct result of upgrading to OS X 10.8.5 and/or iTunes 11:
Starting tonight, after upgrading my OS and iTunes I am no longer able to use Home Sharing between my iMac and Apple TV. Apple TV is logged in to my network and Home Sharing is on, on both devices (signed in to the same account), but Apple TV says Home Sharing is not connecting to my iMac. My iPhone 5 is also not showing a Home Sharing connection.
I've restarted both my iMac and Apple TV several times. Logged in and out several times. Turned Home Sharing off/on several times, power cycled and reset my network modem once.
While trouble shooting my Home Sharing connection I noticed that under my Network settings, Wi-Fi is yellow instead of green and reads "Self-Assigned IP... Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xx and will not be able to connect to the Internet.".
When I go back to Apple TV I've found that althought it's connectted to my iMac through WiFi and I can see my purchased movies I can't view them becasue there is no connection to the iTunes Store (no internet coinnection through WiFi). But my actual network connection on my iMac is just fine.
So it seems that my new OS or iTunes upgrade has caused my WiFi to no longer allow an internet connection across teh wireless network.
Can anybody here tell me why that would happen and how can I fix it?
    Any help is greatly appreciated,
    David

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • ITunes refuses to load in Windows XP after latest iTunes upgrade

iTunes was running just fine.  Then after the latest upgrade, iTunes appears on the menu, but when I try to OPEN, there is perhaps 10 seconds of activity, then nothing.  I have tried redownloading and RUNning after disabling all virus and bot software; ditto SAVing and the RUNning offline; removing all previous versions and re-re-redownloading, all without success. Now I have lost contact with my iPod and am desperate.

It starts up slowly for me as well but it doesn't take that much time to load.  Have you tried defragging your drives?

If the above doesn’t do the trick entirely, then use the instructions in the following as it applies to the version of Windows you are using:
HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP
HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

  • No music after 2.2 upgrade?

    Hello
Just got through installing 2.2 upgrade. Now half my songs (500) have no sound coming from the touch. I would say that half of my songs don't work now and half do just fine. The half that have no sound still have the song title on the ipod, its showing where the song is playing with the little time slider.
    Thank you

    Hello Rammerjammer1
Below are some tips to try
    1. Reboot the iPod Touch
-Hold down home button & sleep/wake button till you see a silver apple logo. And then when the iPod Touch is back up and running check music
    2. Un-sync all your music off the iPod Touch, then Re-sync it back to the iPod Touch, check music
    3. Un-sync music one last time. Then De-authorize and Re-authorize iTunes Store account and re-syncing music.

  • My purchased items aren't appearing in "Music" after iPhone 5 upgrade

I can no longer download my previous purchases since upgrading to the iphone 5 all my other ios6 devices are working just fine.

Are you signed in to the Apple ID used to purchase this music in Settings>iTunes & App Stores?  If so, try tapping your ID, signing out, then singing back in.

  • Is anyone else having problems syncing iPod after latest iTunes upgrade?

My iPod will not sync after the iTunes 10.4 upgrade - first it tries to reload every song in my library, then it quits and says 'cannot copy due to duplicate file name' and this is while my iPod colored data bar says all the stuff is still there?

It gets worse!  I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and am trying to synch a Mac Book, MacBook Pro, iphone 4s, and two iPads via iCloud.  I have got a colassal unadulterated mess!
I have now seen as many as 10 duplicates in my various address books and on the web version of icloud.  I tried manually deleting entries from the web version of icloud and somehow lost my wife's contact info.
I have several email accounts and contact lists I am trying to synch, My .mac and .me accounts, a gmail account, a yahoo account, a commercial account.  I also specified twitter and am trying to add facebook.  I also have an MS/Outlook address book on my Mac's that I am trying to synch up.
The way that icloud is handing contacts is just a total disaster.  I've been an IT guy and worked with computers for over 40 years and I'm going nuts trying to figure out the logic of what the heck is going on.
I see a disasterous result of merging data into contacts.  It appears that records that did not match were merged and I have data from multiple contacts in the same record.
As I said, i have as many as 10 (or more) duplicates in the address book, and in some cases I lost entries such as my wife's!.
    What a freaking MESS!

  • ITunes no longer finds music on another PC upgraded to Windows 8

We store all of our music on a central home theater PC, and the itunes library running on a Vista laptop refers to all of these files.
Windows on the laptop has no issues still accessing the music files on the PC after upgrading to Windows 8 but now iTunes can't locate any of the files.
iTunes says it can't locate them, but if you look at the location in the info pane is says something like file://localhost//HTPC/Family/Music etc. which seems perfectly reasonable to me.

That wasn't it. The problem was that the network share on Vista was lost when I upgraded to Windows 8. I finally figured this out after much frustration only to find that letting another PC share all a user's files makes ALL the Windows 8 Metro apps crash!
The way I fixed it was to use "net share Family=c:\users\family"
There didn't seem to be any way to do this through the Windows 8 GUI
Then I had to allow sharing for "everyone" on all the Family files
Now iTunes finds all the files where it used to

  • Lost iTunes purchased music after latest IOS upgrade

After the automatic IOS upgrade for the Apple Watch my iTunes account lost several purchased albums.  I have tried to re-download the purchased music but not successfully, I'm only able to download four of the songs and they are still not showing up in my iTunes library.

For info these are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple nor iTunes Support.
If they don't show in the Purchased tab in the iTunes Store app on your iPhone and iPad then check to see if they are hidden : iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases.
If you've moved countries since buying them, or if the rights-holder has removed them from the store, then you won't be able to redownload them. Also if the rights-holder has removed an album and replaced it with a different version then it be treated as a different album/purchase.

  • ITunes can't find my music after reinstalling iTunes 10.5

    Hi All!
I thought I'd post this to help out others that may be having the same problem.
Background: After doing a System Restore on my Dell (Windows XP) I couldn't use iTunes because a "system folder is missing".
So I uninstalled iTunes (first copying all my music to an external hard drive just in case) and then installed iTunes 10.5 (32 bit I think). All that went smoothly, but when I opened iTunes every song had an exclamation mark next to it. After reading through a number of other posts I came up with the following solution.
First I used Windows Explorer to see if my music was still in the iTunes folder (My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music) which it was. All the album folders with all the songs in each.
Next, in iTunes, I clicked Edit>Preferances>Advanced, and it showed the path to the folder location
    (C:\Documents and Settings\RedEft\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media),
but since it didn't "see" my songs I thought it didn't recognize my "Music" folder, so I edited the path by adding "Music" to the end.
    Like so: C:\Documents and Settings\RedEft\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music
iTunes then chugged along for a few minutes and recognized about 1/3 of my music.
So I clicked on a song that still had an exclamation mark next to it and the pop-up window said "The song 'xxxxx xx xxxx' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I clicked on locate and found the song, then I did it for one more song and a pop-up asked something like "Would you like to locate more music?" I clicked the yes option, and to my surprise it found almost ALL the rest.
    Victory!!!
Now I'm just missing one album and one song from another album.
Where, oh where, could they be? I'm hoping they're on my external hard drive and I'll just have to do a copy and paste.
    Hope this helps someone.
    Peace
    RedEft

I would recommend you put everything including th eiTune slibrary files into the iTunes folder on the external.
This way, you will not have any issues when moving th eHD anywhere else. The entire library will be on it.
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ from yoru internal to the external.
Move your current iTunes media folder on the external into the /iTunes/ folder you just copied to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select the iTunes folder on the external.
Now you can plug in the external to another/new computer and launch iTunes holding option as above and everything will be there.

  • Can't sync music after 3.0 upgrade - help!

Last night I upgraded to 3.0 on my 1st generatio iPhone. It took forever, and even though I received an error message at one point, and restarted, it worked. The problem is that even though I restored my backup, the music is gone from the phone. I tried synching with iTunes a number of times, get NO error messages and all appears fine. But the iPod function still has NO content. I made sure my playlists were selected to be synched, but still nothing. Anyone ever experience this? Any known fixes?
    thx

Ok, problem solved. An Apple rep advised me to sync my phone without synching the music files, and then after it's done to go back in, and select music to be synched and do it again. This did the trick.

  • Missing music files since iTunes upgrade 7.7.043

I have several problems right now with my iTunes. It appears that maybe it could be related to my recent upgrade to iTunes after reading through other posts about lost files.
My problem is that I have all my music on an external drive which used to read as the E:/ drive. I just recently signed up for wireless internet with Verizon and have an USB modem. When I first installed that and then opened my iTunes all of a sudden my external drive became the F:/ drive. So then all of my music in my library could not be found. So I changed the location of my iTunes library to the F:/ drive.
So I reinstalled my music into my library and unfortunately doubled my music because it duplicated all of it. So I slowly began the process of deleting duplicates.
I got to about H in my albums...and the next time I opened iTunes to continue this tedious process....the files couldn't be located. With those lovely ! symbols next to each song.
So now I have duplicates of my music....26,000+ songs and they can't find their files.
I then decided before I delete everything...I would reorganize my iTunes library because for some reason all my music seems to be in multiple folders. But during this process I was not able to locate almost half of my music files.
This was my last attempt tonight...I opened iTunes while pressing the Shift key and created a new iTunes library and imported my iTunes folder. I now have 10,000 songs but am missing about 3,000. Is it really possible that iTunes lost some of my music. Can I get my music off of my iPod?
    Any ideas...or am I screwed?

After weeks of working out what the problem was I finally found out. In my case I had recently purchased Paragon NTFS for Mac so that I could write to an NTFS formatted external hard drive. This was where the issue was when iTunes tried to write to the external drive where I keep my iTunes library and iTunes media folders. Every time I tried to download a song from iTunes, it could not write to my external drive and said that the file or folder was in use. The Paragon NTFS for Mac software 'driver' was causing this to happen and as soon as I turned the driver off on the Paragon software admin tool, my problem was solved! Seemed like the driver was locking out iTunes when trying to write. So if anyone else has this issue, turn off the driver when using iTunes. If you are not running Paragon, then perhaps you have a similar conflict with another application.
