Saving sent mail to a different IMAP folder?

I'm in the process of consolidating several IMAP accounts into one, in the hopes of improving Mail.app's performance (most notably by decreasing the number of mailboxes that make up my unified inbox).
Overall it should work but there's a problem: I want to be able to continue sending mail from multiple email addresses, saving each sent message to my single account's sent mail folder on the IMAP server. I'm not sure how to do this. I can set up several "dummy" POP accounts to allow sending from multiple addresses, but then the sent mail is just saved locally. I can keep multiple IMAP accounts and turn off automatic checking, but then I'm still checking all those mailboxes when I look in my unified inbox or sent mail folder.
The simplest approach would simply be a way to define several "from" addresses in Mail.app and send them all through the same account...but I don't see any way to do this.
Any ideas? Thanks.

The question is, are you trying to solve an actual problem that you have? If you're experiencing performance issues, it could be that there is something wrong with the index, which you can re-create as follows:
1. Quit Mail.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Move any "IMAP-", "Mac-", or "Exchange-" account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON'T trash any "POP-" account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.
5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an "offline" state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Also, go to System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Good Mailing List reader (one IMAP folder)?

Hi all, been using Evolution, but the way it handles tons of ML posts which have accumulated overnight bothers me, so much so I sometimes just go back to gmail's UI (single convo for each thread rocks!). Thunderbird doesn't handle things very much differently. In this case 'things' refers to having all my mailing list mail come into a single IMAP folder, with threads that can stretch to several dozen mails (one of the smaller kernel-related MLs) and many active threads at the same time (for example, the dovecot ML).
What do you all use to read your MLs? Any other mailing client good for this? Wouldn't mind just using evo for my 'normal' mails, contacts, and calendaring, having a side app which accesses IMAP just to read the MLs (the IMAP server is local on my machine anyway). Thanks for your ideas.

Hi AndyRTR, thanks for dropping by. If I may presume to ask more questions, what's good about claws-mail? What do you like about it? Is it more intuitive to you in the handling of ML threads?

  • IMAP question - Sent mail not synching to IMAP server

I have several new IMAP accounts (not .mac). They sync fine for received mail. They also sync sent mail fine when I use Thunderbird. But When I use Mail (X.3 - panther), even though I have the box checked to store sent mail on the server, it does not.
--> no sent mail folder is created.
--> mail sent from apple mail does nto show up in Thunderbird
    Is this a known bug?
How can I work around it?
    Is it fixed in Tiger?
Thanks, I have searched the archives. no luck.
    Grant

no messages are ever added to it when I send from Apple Mail. The one email I sent from thunderbird does show up (in both). In another account, the one email I sent from webmail at the Madrid airport shows up, but not the hundreds I have sent in the interim.
    Sorry about the confusion.

  • 1 of my 4 pop accounts is not saving sent mail to sent mail folder all the other are

When I send an email 3/4 of the accounts save the sent email to the sent email folder. 1 account sends the email out but does not save it??? I have updated to the latest version, I have checked that the location where it saves email is the same setting as all other accounts. Please help

I have 3 pop3 accounts and 1 imap. 1 of the pop accounts is not showing the sent email in the unified sent email folder. The one which is not showing sent email has the same outgoing mail server as one of the other accounts which is showing so i dont think it has anything to do with the email provider

  • Office 2013 is saving sent mail in outbox with 0 bytes.

E mails are going and coming in outlook 2013 in IMAP configuration. but even after a mail is gone, that mails stuck in outbox with 0 bytes in size.

    Hi,
Would you please provide more information so that we can resolve the problem more efficiently?
Does the recipient receive the emails?
Can you find the email in your Sent Items folder?
Meanwhile, please try the following troubleshoot steps:
    1. Start Outlook in safe mode to check if this issue was caused by problematic add-ins. Press Windows Key + R, type
outlook.exe /safe in the Run command and press Enter.
    2. Temporarily turn off your anti-virus and other security programs, make sure mail scanning in these security software is disabled. Then check the issue again.
    3. Run a repair of your Outlook data file to check the result:

  • IPhone 4S suddenly not saving 'Sent' mail items - help

When I send emails from my iPhone (on any account) it does not save the 'Sent' email.  However, when I send it from my desktop, the emails will appear in my sent folder.  I know recipients are getting the email - however there is now no trace of me having sent it.  If I reply to a message it will also not show the 'replied arrow' even if it sends and the person receives it.  I am finding this incredibly frusterating.  Everything worked perfectly until this past Friday - now all of my communication from the weekend and beyond is not saving.
I have reset my phone, deleted and reconfigured all of the mail accounts on my phone.  I can't think of what else to do.

Okay, now that I am looking back through my sent folder, it seems like ALL of the sent items are missing. They were there last week - I remember searching through them to find an email to resolve an issue.  I use my phone for mail for my work.  This is unacceptable.

  • Yosemite Sent mail also appears in draft folder

Every time I send an e-mail a copy of it appears in my "drafts" folder even if I've not saved it.  Do I have a setting wrong?
This has started happening since I installed Yosemite.
Also if I try to "delete" an e-mail nothing happens.
    Suggestions?  Thanks!

Thanks Glenn!  I have no idea how I managed to check that box and sure wouldn't have know to look there. I appreciate your help!

  • Mail.app stopped saving sent mail to server

A few days ago I searched for a sent email with what I knew to be a unique word I had used and it didn't get found. I looked at the Sent section (the one with the paper airplane) in the sidebar and noticed that there hadn't been any additions for two days even though I know I had sent email in that period.
I have an iMac and two iBooks, they all showed the same behavior, so nothing in the Preferences had been changed.
My default email name is an AOL account. I went to their webmail site, and a new email sent from there showed up in the Sent section of Mail.app.
I downloaded the Thunderbird email client, and mail sent from there with my AOL name shows up in Mail.app Sent.
So Thunderbird and AOL webmail will send mail from my AOL account and have it show up as sent but Mail.app won't.
    Anyone else have this problem?
Done all the usual stuff, permission repair, directory rebuild, reboot, even a complete reinstall of the OS.

Looks like AOK has fessed up to the problem:
"I have never had a problem with my aol mail until Dec 18. I can no longer see my sent emails. I am using a MAC and accessing AOL through Mac. Very frustrating. What is going on?

  • Saving sent mail from an specific person

i have a smart mailbox which saves all my received messages from an specific person but is there a way to make a folder with the emails i have sent to that specific person?
    Thank you

you can create a smart mailbox for that in the same way you've created the other smart mailbox. when you are creating a smart mailbox, in the parameters select "any recipient" instead of "from" and check the box "include sent messages".

  • Mapping Mail to the IMAP Server's sent mail folder.

In Mail, how do I tell my IMAP account what folder to store sent mail in on the IMAP server?
NOTE! I am not asking how to make it store on the server. I know if you go to a mail boxes preferences you can check a box that says "Store sent messages on server." I assure you that box is checked.
On my windows box I use Thunderbird, and with Thunderbird I have to manually tell it I want to store all of my mail in the subscribed folder entitled "sent-mail." This works fine. I can not figure out how to do this with Mail. I am assuming this is why my sent mail is not getting stored on the server.
    Cheers,
    ccerinojr

Click on the Sent folder, then click Mailbox in the Menubar, place cursor on Use This Mailbox For, and choose Sent, which you should find in black type.
    Keep us posted.

  • Some sent mails do not appear/are not saved in "sent messages" and are lost

i work with mail and 4 different imap accounts. about every 15th sent email "gets lost". i.e. i can follow the sending process in the activity window, and i hear the sending confirmation tone. and, usually, the mails even reach the receiver. BUT, the mails do not appear/are not saved in the "sent messages" folder and are lost. this is very unsettling, as there seems to be no recognizable pattern. can anyone help, or should i change to "entourage"? big thanks for replies

    Hi Bassolino and David,
I, too, have had this intermittent issue and wonder if you had found a solution?
In the past 3 weeks, two messages have been sent from my mac mail account, using the mail application (the only apparent common factor being that both messages had iphoto attachments), the recipients have received them - only I do not have a copy in my 'sent' folder.
They are not stored on the macintosh server either...
I have not altered any settings and this intermittent issue has just emerged.
Any help from 'Top Users' would be welcome. Thanks.

  • Mail 3.6 doesn't show new message in IMAP folder

    Hello,
I am using Mail with an IMAP server.
On this IMAP server, mails are automatically sorted to different mailboxes (IMAP folder) via .procmail.rc directives.
When I receive an Email and when this email is dispatched in the correct mailbox, Mail3.6 doesn't display this new message.
Questions : How to set-up Mail3.6 to correctly display new incoming mail server sorted in IMAP folder ? or How to overcome this Mail bug ?
PS : This question was already asked a few months ago on Apple Bug Report, answer was that this bug will be corrected on the next release.... Seems not...
    Thank you by adance

    Hello,
I am having a very similar problem that just started happening recently when I started using gmail folders instead of my school's email (both IMAP).
I have all emails configured for IMAP and the messages arrive fine, but when mail applies my custom filters and the messages are moved to the individual folders, the new message indicator (on the file and on the dock icon) are not present. The only new messages that appear are those in the mail Inbox. When I then click on the individual folders (I have to click through them all individually) it recognizes the new, unread email and updates the indicators (both next to the custom folder and on the dock icon).
This is a frustrating issue because I do not have any indication that I have new mail unless I go and click on each folder individually.
The issue just started occurring when i switched to using my gmail account. The folders seem to be set up appropriately to move messages in Mail and also have them labeled on gmail ([GMAIL]/foldername), but Mail just doesn't seem to recognize the messages as new once they have been moved to the folders until I sync (either by clicking on the folder or by using the "synchronize all accounts" command).
Any suggestions? I found this same issue in the archived questions (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7513842), but it was not resolved.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

  • Saving read mail

I have spent the better part of the day fixing problems with the Mail app on my computer so I could start using it instead of AOL mail. I had been repeatedly assured that Mail was a huge improvement on AOL. So far I have been unable to find a way to automatically save read mail to a folder somewhere. In AOL mail I can save mail as I read it. This allows me to only read the mail that I am interested in, and delete the rest, knowing that I have saved the good bits. If OSX Mail can't do this, I have just wasted my day. Saving read mail is every bit as important as saving sent mail, why aren't they treated the same? Can anyone help?
    Mac Kerr

    Hi again, Mac Kerr
I have spent the better part of the day fixing
problems with the Mail app on my computer
    Yeah! I know!
I agree with what Mulder and Allan have said, but I also believe there is a point in what you're saying and it is actually trivial to accomplish something equivalent using a smart folder. You just have to "think different".
Rather than focusing on saving messages as you read them, let's realize that they are all already saved by default, so what you really want is to view the unread ones separately and get rid of the unwanted ones as you view them. Do Mailbox > New Smart Mailbox and choose Message is Unread from the condition pop-up menu.
That's it, really! Use the Smart Mailbox as your main mailbox. Every message deleted from it will be deleted from the Inbox as well and, hence, won't be saved. Every message read will disappear from the Smart Mailbox as soon as you select another mailbox and go back to the Smart Mailbox, but it won't actually be deleted, it just won't appear there because it no longer meets the condition.

  • Saving sent message has started failing frequently, Retry works.

Over the past month or so the box showing message being saved to Sent Mail stays open for a very long time. Frequently it fails and offers for me to retry. The retry usually works promptly.

Opps! Just crashed, same behavior as originally posted. It timed out after 60 seconds. As soon as the crash report popped up I was offered "Retry". It then went immediately and showed up in the Sent Mail folder.
Matt, saving sent mail has not crashed. It takes 15-20 seconds to save to the Sent Mail folder but not long enough to time out as it was doing before.
I deselected the setting in Properties, "Select this folder for offline use". I never have occasion to use Thunderbird offline. If there is an reason why I should NOT deselect this box, please let me know. I'm hoping this will speed up the process.
    Thanks for your support.

  • Gmail IMAP Sent  Mail folder missing in Mac Mail

I made a change in Mac Mail by using the Mailbox/Use this mailbox for Sent Mail menu item on the [Gmail] Sent Mail folder and the original
[Gmail] Sent Mail folder has vanished. It still appears in the Gmail web interface and is checked on to show up in IMAP, but it doesn't appear in Mac Mail. Sent messages to appear in the Mac Mail snet folder, which is fine but I want to [Gmail] Sent Mail folder back. I tried turning the "show in IMAP" setting in Gmail on and off and it works for other folders, but not for the "Sent Mail" folder. I also tried restoring an older copy of the com.apple.mail.plist file but that didn't work either. Any ideas how to get it back? Pop is turned off as well.

It seems this is the desired behavior in Mail, as I don't need the [Gmail] folders to appear since the mail is all in the Mac Mail folders.
Of course, this might all break again when I upgrade to Mavericks :-(
