Saving two versions of a photo

Is there a way to save one photo in two different sizes? Example, I want to crop and down-rez a photo to send out to somebody for reference, but want to maintain the original full-rez raw file in the event that said person wants to purchase said image.
Please advise.

You don't really need to have two versions of the image in this case.
First the resolution/size issue is handled during export. You don't change the resolution of an image while working in Aperture you change it when you go to export. So a single image could be exported in any number of size/resolution combinations.
So one workflow for something like this would be:
Make all needed adjustments to the image except for crop.
Then crop the image, export i in what ever resolution size you want
Send that to the client.
When the client comes back and says OK
remove the crop from the image
Export at the resoliution and size you will give to the customer
NO need for two versions.
And actually I question the crop. It sounds like you are cropping the image in order to send a smaller size for confirmation.
Again this is really handled better during export. You can send the complete image but at a reduced size and resolution.
Finally what it sounds like you are doing is sending a proof to the customer for there approval. If that is thre case you could ad a watermark to the image and then just remove the watermark after the customer purchases the image.

  • Why am I getting the wrong version of my photos in photo stream?

I am using iphoto '11 v. 9.2.1.   Basically I have gone around in circles but firstly should say I have reset photo stream in icloud.com and on all devices including my Mac.  I have iphoto on the Mac and have uploaded some photos from the camera from a recent trip.  This is all as I would normally do.  After a couple of edits I now have two versions of the photo in the event album - the edited and unedited both with the same name.  I am guessing this is like the old iphoto's two libraries??  Anyway that's not really the problem I don't think but when I drag the edited version of the image to my photo stream (I have automatic turned off at the moment) it is the unedited version that shows up there.
Am I missing something obvious here?  All I really want to do is use the photo stream to allow me to then save the images in a new folder on the ipad so I can bore some friends with our photos of the trip and of course I want to show them the beautiful edited versions not the unedited?
    Thanks

Hi - thanks for the reply.  I have tried your suggested test and it is the same
I also tried changing the name of the edited version and also deleted the original versions.  My event folder was just left with all the edited versions but still when I dragged them over the the photo stream it showed the unedited.
Stuck - I am assuming that if when I save the file after editing I save as and create a completely different version then this would overcome the issue - I'm just not sure I should have to do that??
    Thanks

  • IPhoto '11 v. 9.2.3 bug when splitting events containing flagged and duplicate versions of same photo in Event.

    UPDATE:
Okay, I don't know how to delete this - so I'm just saying that after sending this, I found Terrance's reply to a similar post (3/3/12).  I didn't realize iPhoto had been changed so that the "master" controls duplicates.  I do understand how to export, et cetera .... and I do use albums also!  I just really want the duplicate photos to NOT be in the general Events.  Trust me, I have a good reason!
Thank you for your (previous) help!
    ~h
Okay, when I created this User Name, I didn't foresee this situation.  I'm pretty sure this is a real bug - and maybe someone can let the appropriate programmer know....
Essentially, I'm organizing my 2012 iPhoto library and am trying to get around the rule that a photo can only be in one Event.  I flagged the photos I want to keep where they are - AND - be grouped separately.
Then in Flagged, I duplicated all.  Then I unflag the orginal files.
Then I modified the duplicated (version 2 or version 3) files.
So, in the original events, there are the two versions of some photos.
Opening one of the events, I select a couple of photos and "split".
Split event does get created, but it has no photos.
Photos and duplicated photos remain in original event.
I'm quitting now - before I lose everything.....!
(I'll back up the library and try again later.........!)
and jsut for the fn of it, I'm adding that I find it strange that I'd have to manually click "abc-check" -- that spellcheck doesn't run automatically.   --I guess it annoys others?

    First Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that doesn't help apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Merge two versions of my website?

I have saved two versions of my website and would like to 'transfer' a couple of the pages from one to the other to make the perfect one. The master pages are the same in both. Is that possible?
I can't even open the two versions at the same time.

    Hi mslens,
At this point of time you have the option of opening both web sites together in different tabs and select all the content you want to move and copy paste to the web site where you want it to be.

How can I create a slideshow that depicts only a version of a photo rather than the original?   Since the original and new versions are saved together, the aperture slideshow often choices the original rather than the desired version to display.

There are two things we use the name "Slideshow" for in Aperture:  a Slideshow Album, used for making Slideshows, and the Slideshow that is made.  (Imho, it is a design mistake to not call the containers used to create Slideshows, Books, etc., "Albums".)
The Slideshow will use the Album Pick from any Stack.  A good way to use Aperture is to promote the Image you want to regularly use (such as, for example, a Version with adjustments) to the top of the Stack.  This makes it the Stack Pick, and will be the default Album Pick.  If you haven't done that, you can still change the Album Pick for any Stack in a Slideshow Album.  Expand your Stack(s), select the Image in each Stack that you want to be the Album Pick (and thus shown in the Slideshow), and "Stacks➞Set Album Pick".  (Note the keyboard shortcut; there is also a Toolbar icon for this.)  The change is immediate.  The Slideshow will always show the Album Pick (or, if there is not one, the Stack Pick) for every Stack in your Slideshow Album.

  • Saving multiple versions of photo in iPhoto

Hi, I am just begiining to use iPhoto on my new Macbook Pro. I  have two questions related to saving multiple versions of the same photo:
After editing a photo I have noticed there is no Done or Save  or Save As options. All I see is back and forward arrows to go to a diferent photo. This bothers me in severasl ways. I may want to save the edited picture as some other revision without loosing the original. How do I do it? Also how to save multiple versions of edited files say version 1, 2, 3 etc? This is a very simple thing in most PC based photo editors but I cannot figure out in iPhoto. Not sure why Apple wants to be different each time.
Actually I have similar issues on iPad too so if you can answer th same question on that device also, I appreciate.
    Please help me!
    Thnx

I may want to save the edited picture as some other revision without loosing the original. How do I do it? Also how to save multiple versions of edited files say version 1, 2, 3 etc?
As Larry said, iPhoto '11 on your Mac has a lossless workflow and will always save the original master image file in addition to your edited version. If you want to store more than one edited version of a photo, duplicate the photo before editing it, see: iPhoto '11: Duplicate a photo  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2408
Actually I have similar issues on iPad too so if you can answer th same question on that device also, I appreciate.
With Photo on your iPad you also have a lossless workflow and can undo all edits and revert to the original. You can save several edited versions of the same photo to the camera roll. See the iPhoto help for iPad: http://help.apple.com/iphoto/ipad/1.1/#blnka97fbb1f  on editing photos.

  • I have two versions of Pr, one is the latest 2014 and when trying to open a Pr2014 session, I get an error message saying the project was saved in a newer version and cannot be opened. Help

I have two versions of Pr, one is the latest 2014 and when trying to open a Pr2014 session, I get an error message saying the project was saved in a newer version and cannot be opened. Could there be an issue with an older Pr application on the computer? Please help!

You need to be very careful which project you open in which version.
For 2014 make sure its on 2014.1 build 81.

  • PSE 12.1 not saving in version set

I have been successfully using PSE 12.1 on Windows 7 since last August.  However I've started having problems in the last 2 or 3 days.  I start the Organizer and select a photo to edit.  When I "save as" I get one of two results.  In the first case it saves the photo in the proper folder but it does not create a version set with the original.  In the second case, the editor locks up and eventually I get a message saying the editor is not responding and windows is looking for a solution.  Usually it saves one photo as in case one above, and then fails to respond on the second photo and I shut it down.  Over the past 2 days I have uninstalled PSE 12 and reinstalled 3 times, upgrading to 12.1 each time., but I get the same result.  Any ideas what is causing this?
Update:  I've given up.  Uninstalled for the last time; purchased PSE 13; everything working with new version.

This is odd . Did you tried with clean preferences. To clean preferences go to "Edit Menu>PReferences>General" and click the button "Reset Preferences on next launch". Relaunch PSE.
This is not new, already several posts on this forum and one bug report:

Today's state of the problem seems to be that this happens not only with saving in version sets in PSE12, but also on simple saves with 'include in the organizer' checked.
It happens on previously converted catalogs, not on new ones.
It happens when the process 'elementsautoanalyzer.exe' is running (you can 'kill' it from the Windows task bar, but you must do it every time you start the organizer. Deleting or renaming this file seems to work.)
This seems also to be a problem for people using the 'watched folders'.
So, to prevent the problem : kill the elementsautoanalyzer.exe every time you start the organizer.
To recover the edited files not included in the catalog, do a manual 'get photos and videos' from the already gotten files.
It's important to do so, otherwise the edited files won't be catalogued and be missing if you do a backup.
If necessary, use the automatic stacking feature by visual similarity to stack your originals with your edited versions, since you can't create version sets.
If you can share your experience on the above feedback link, please do it and add your vote.

  • Problems with saving and versions

i know you're all preparing popcorn for the iPhone release, but maybe one or two have got a minute to read this and help me
i'm using lion for a while, and ever since i'm losing files.
my problem is not the system, maybe i just didn't get how to use it, but i'm blaming having lost my files. :/
so, there's versions, and autosave. but simetimes i dran 'n drop a file i'm working on trom my taskbar (the little icon next to the filename) to my desktop. sometimes, but not always, it's corrupted. i don't always notice right away, so when i close the document (without saving of course) it's just a file icon, but there is no possible way to open it without getting a message.
i don't know if i'm not using it right, but "they" say you don't have to save your files, they say your files are saving versions, but so many times i can't go back to a version.
also i'm using a lot of photoshop, and just now something happened, and not for the first time:
i opened up a .psd that i was working on yesterday. when i wanted to save it (with crtl-S), it said "Could not save *documentname*.psd because the file is already in use or was left open."
of course the file is in use and open. how does the mufassa expect me to save a file without opening it up? and why would i save a file without using it before? this is not the first time, and i always have to save it using a different name, and then delete the old file...
i might have a thinking problem, but maybe you can still help me out?
can someone update me on how to optimize my workflow, so i can spend more time working, and less time looking for files or restarting documents?
    thx and peace,
    Marc

    Hi there
I'm a bit perplexed and more than a bit concerned with something you said:
    mheilZP wrote:
The other person I worked with had no problems accessing and saving new versions of the file, but for some reason it fouled up on me. I've never had this happen before and was wondering why it happened and what I should do to avoid it happening again.
This seems to infer that you are sharing the same project with another person? If I'm correct in my understanding, there are two major things wrong here.
    1. You cannot share a project in a fashion where two or more users make edits to it at the same time. Doing so is an open invitation to disaster.
    2. In order for two or more users to have access to the same Captivate project, it would have to exist on a network drive. Editing projects while they are stored on a network resource is another open invitation to disaster.
The bottom line here is that Captivate files must be edited from the local C drive by a single author. You may copy them to a network location for the purposes of backing them up, but that's it.
    Cheers... Rick

When I OCR two versions of the same document and then compare the documents in Acrobat Pro XI, I usually get the message that there are no changes to mark.  However, I know there a quite a few number of changes.  I raised this question more than a year ago, and the response I received had to do with the quality of the OCR and the scans of the documents.  However, if I use Acrobat Pro XI to save the same documents in Word and then run a comparison in Word all of the changes are marked.  When a PDF is saved as a Word document in Acrobat Pro XI, is a different OCR module being used than the one used in Acrobat Pro XI for text recognition?

OCR is only for recoginition of the image / picture of text provided by an scanner.
Content typed into a Word file which is converted to a PDF is (in Word and in PDF) *not* an image  or picture of text - it is the digital text. So, no OCR involved.
When the "digital" (renderable) text of a PDF's page content is exported to Word no OCR is involved.
When a PDF's content is from the image output of a scanner and this is a picture of text then OCR comes into play.
If this content is exported to Word before doing OCR then it is the image that is exported to the Word file.
Once OCR is performed it is the OCR output that is exported.
OCR output is (always will be) impacted by "the quality of the OCR and the scans of the documents".
Regardless "Compare" is based on a Word file output to PDF1 then edits to the Word file followed by an output to PDF2. You use Acrobat Pro to do a compare of PDF1 & PDF2.
Paper 1 scanned to image 1 to image 1 in PDF1 that gets OCR 1 and
Paper 2 scanned to image 2 to image 2 in PDF2 that gets OCR 2
being processed with Acrobat Pro's Compare can certainly be done.
But - well you've described what can be observed.
    Be well...

  • Will two versions of iPhoto clash?

I have a newer iMac with iphoto 6.0. I also have an older G3 I just bought running Panther. Not sure the version of that iPhoto, but it's definitely different.
If I host the photos on my newer Mac, will my older Mac be able to point to them? Or will the two versions clash?
    Thanks!

It won't work because libraries are not backwards compatible. If you open an older version library with iPhoto 6 the library will be updated by v6. Once updated, it is unreadable by the older version. There is a big difference in the library structure of v6 and previous versions.

  • When using photoshop do i use the jpeg version of my photo or the raw version - as I have both

When using photoshop do i use the jpeg version of my photo or the raw version - as I have both?
    Please can someone advise?

If you use the RAW version to edit with PS you'll have to save the results to the Desktop and import it into the library as a new file.
If you edit the jpeg version must make sure to flatten the image before saving normally so the extension remains as a jpg file. Here's some more info on that:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
