SaxParser problem

Hi everyone,
I am using the SaxParser to parse an xml data. My problem is how to pass a
String object directly to the SaxParser? I have little knowledge about this
parser but what I have learned so far is that, an xml file should be passed
to the parser like:
XMLReader xmlReader = new SAXParser();
FileReader fileReader = new FileReader( [the xml file] );
xr.parser( new InputSource( fileReader );
(other codes are omitted)
Is there a way to pass a String or byte[] directly to the SAXParser?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ferdie

I found the solution using a StringReader.

  • SaxParser problem. attributes.getValue() returns strange data

    Hello.
    I'm using SaxParser to parse an xml-document.
    After updating to java 1.6 I got weird results when calling attributes.getValue(someString);
    Strangely this happens only when I have a really long string of data in an element.
    Another weird thing is that the values I recieve when calling getValue() is the right number of characters, but they are the wrong characters. Accually the string I get seems to come from somewhere in the data of the element.
    This is what the xml document looks like:
    <world>
    <picture name="Picture" positionX="57.272408" positionY="-0.52022195" positionZ="76.156906"
    rotationX="-0.0037210481" rotationY="0.69323385" rotationZ="0.72069275" rotationW="-0.0038684383"
    width="12.0" height="9.0" imageWidth="512"
    imageHeight="512" >e1fdffe1fdff...(about 1.5 Megabyte of hex data)...fe9fdffe9f</picture>
    </world>When calling attributes.getValue("positionX") for example, I don't get "57.272408" but instead something from the hexdata like "2b9401289" and it's always the same number of characters as the string I'm supposed to get, in this case 9.
    If I decrease the size of the hex data significantly, this error doesn't occur.
    Here's what my code looks like:
        public void load(URL url){
         this.clear();
         SAXParserFactory factory = SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
                 try {
                     // Parse the input
                     SAXParser saxParser = factory.newSAXParser();
                     saxParser.parse( url.toString(), this );
                 } catch (ParserConfigurationException ex) {
                     ex.printStackTrace();
                 } catch (IOException ex) {
                     ex.printStackTrace();
                 } catch (SAXException ex) {
                     ex.printStackTrace();
        public void startElement(String namespaceURI,
                                 String sName, // simple name (localName)
                                 String qName, // qualified name
                                 Attributes attrs)
        throws SAXException
            this.attributes = attrs;
            String eName = sName; // element name
            if ("".equals(eName)) eName = qName; // namespaceAware = false
            this.elementName = eName;
            if(elementName.equals("picture")){
                this.stringBuffer = new StringBuffer();
        public void characters(char buf[], int offset, int len)
        throws SAXException
            if(elementName.equals("picture")){
                String string = new String(buf,offset, len);
                stringBuffer.append(string);
        public void endElement(String namespaceURI,
                               String sName, // simple name
                               String qName  // qualified name
        throws SAXException
            String eName = sName; // element name
            if ("".equals(eName)) eName = qName; // namespaceAware = false
            if(eName.equals("picture")){
                System.out.println(this.attributes.getValue("positionX"));
        }

    You should extract the attribute values in the startElement() method, rather than keeping a reference to the Attributes object. The SAX parser probably reuses that object as soon as you return from startElement(), thus making it useless to you.

  • URLClassLoader Problem

    Hi
    I am currently developing an application based on the plugin architecture model and have run into some problems which I hope someone can help with.
    Environment:
    Windows XP SP1
    JDK 1.4.2_04
    My application sweeps a known directory on startup - within that directory are sub-directories, one for each plugin.
    Within each plugin sub-directory is located a single JAR file (the plugin JAR file) and a lib folder containing any libraries used by the plugin. For each plugin JAR file found a config file is extracted and the fully-qualified classname of the class to invoke as the plugin entry-point is read.
    For each plugin I create a URLClassLoader instance, adding a number of URL objects to the URLClassLoader; the plugin sub-directory, the plugin JAR file itself, the "lib" sub-directory and each JAR file within the lib sub-directory.
    So, knowing the fully-qualified name of the class to create, and having built a URLClassLoader for the plugin, I am able to instantiate the plugin as follows:
    Class clazz = Class.forName(className, true, classLoader);
    Constructor con = clazz.getConstructor(null);
    Object obj = con.newInstance(null);
    This works fine, and I am able to access the functionality of the plugin through a defined plugin interface just like any other object in the application.
    My problem arises when the loaded plugin attempts to create an instance of a class defined in one of the JAR files in the plugins' lib folder, specifically an instance of "com.ibm.xml.parsers.SAXParser" defined in xml4j.jar, which is included in the plugins' lib folder and which has been added as a URL to the URLClassLoader for the plugin.
    The loaded plugin contains the following statement:
    org.xml.sax.Parser parser = org.xml.sax.helpers.ParserFactory.makeParser("com.ibm.xml.parsers.SAXParser");
    A bit of investigation reveals that this eventually leads to a call to Class.forName() - it appears that my URLClassLoader is being ignored and the default ClassLoader is being used. If I add the xml4j.jar JAR file to my classpath using -cp or -Xbootclasspath/a: everything works as expected.
    Is there anyway to force the default ClassLoader to recognise the URLS on my URLClassLoader or to force the xml4j code to use my URLClassLoader (short of actually modifying the xml4j code)?
    Any help is very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Yeah - that was my understanding - that if class A references class B and causes the definition of class B to be loaded into memory, that the Classloaded associated with class A would be loaded to load class B.
    I know that my URLClassLoader is working - if I remove one of the 3rd party JARs from the plugin lib folder, the process fails on a ClassNotFound exception long before reaching the SAXParser problem.
    I've attached a sample log4j trace of the error for illustration:

  • Problems with using SAXParser.parse with an InputStream

    Hello:
    I have successfully run the echo01 program from the XML tutorial. I made the following changes to parse the output from a servlet which generates an XML document.
    URL recordedSensor = new URL("http://redbd01:8010/servlet/RecordedSensor?vin=1M000000000000001");
    URLConnection rsConn = recordedSensor.openConnection();
    // Parse the input
    SAXParser saxParser = factory.newSAXParser();
    saxParser.parse( rsConn.getInputStream(), handler);
    I get the following errors when I try to run the code.
    org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: java.lang.NullPointerException

    I think I have the problem narrowed down to the handlers accessing the class variable out which is a Writer the emit() method uses to output the document. When I replace out.write in emit() with System.out.println() the code works.
    I've tried accessing other class variables in the handler methods with similar results.
    Anybody encountered similar problems? And what is the solution.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gary

    I have the same problem, if you find a solution let me know. I've double checked my objects to make sure their not null, I've checked my constructors in the extended default handler, not really sure where else to look, its such a simple program....

  • Xerces SAXParser validation problems

    I'm using the Xerces 2 beta 3 SAXParser to validate an XML document but
    it does not seem to raise a SAXParseException even though my XML is not valid.
    Say I have the following DTD, example.dtd:
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' ?>
    <!ELEMENT a (b)>
    <!ELEMENT b (c)>
    <!ELEMENT c (#PCDATA)>
    Now, I have a well-formed XML document that is not valid because it clearly violates
    the DTD above:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE class SYSTEM "example.dtd">
    <a>
    <c>Hello</c>
    </a>
    It is my understanding that the SAXParser validation should catch this invalid XML.
    Why does it not raise any Exceptions?
    From what I understood the only valid documents should contain 0 or more of the
    following XML statements:
    <c>Hello</c>
    OR
    <b>
    <c>Hello</c>
    </b
    OR
    <a>
    <b>
    <c>Hello</c>
    </b>
    </a>
    Also, note that if I forget a tag, the parser behaves as expected and raises a SAXParseException that reads
    'The element type "a" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "</a>'
    i.e. <c>Hello
    The only reason I mention this is to show that validation is set to true on the SAXParser.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    KL

    The problem I am have does not seem to be with the value of the
    http://xml.org/sax/features/validation feature. I printed the value out after I set it and it is indeed set to true.
    I was reading more about the feature (see below) and am now thinking the validation might not occur because the grammar might not be read in by the parser.
    When that say "grammar" I assume they mean the DTD in my case. When they say "the document must specify a grammar," I assume that mean that my XML document must state the DTD to use in the DOCTYPE statement.
    My XML document looks kind of like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE class SYSTEM "example.dtd" [
    <!ENTITY % entities SYSTEM "7670Entities2.0.xml">
    %entities;
    ]>
    <a>
    <b>
    <c>Hello</c>
    </b>
    </a>
    So have I specified the grammar correctly? Is there anyway to print out anything that will show that the grammar has indeed been read in?
    http://xml.org/sax/features/validation
    True:
    Validate the document.
    False:
    Do not validate the document.
    Default:
    false
    Access:
    (parsing) read-only; (not parsing) read-write;
    Note:
    If this feature is set to true, the document must specify a
    grammar. If this feature is set to false, the document may
    specify a grammar and that grammar will be parsed but
    no validation of the document contents will be performed.

  • Problem using saxparser(reading japanese xml file)

    Hi everybody,
    I hav a problem while reading japanese xml file.(UTF-8 charset)
    I have to read the file and process it.
    But in the characters function of the saxparser(defaulthandler) the japanese chatracters are not read properly and the program is
    displaying some junk values(????) instead of the actual japanese characters.
    I am also usind xsd validation.
    I am not able to where the characters manipulation is being done.
    Please help me as soon as possible .
    Thanks in advance,
    Charan.

    There are a couple of things probably going on.
    1) When I've done things using Unicode unusual characters, they do not print properly if you do System.out.println( ). If you have a Gui panel and can put them into a JTextArea or JEditorPane, they may show up properly if you have set the font for that object to one that can display the characters.
    2) Many people starting with SAX write their code assuming that the characters method is only called once for each element that has text content. This is incorrect. The characters method can be called many times, and it is your responsibility to catch all of the data. In 1.4 you can use a StringBuffer, or in 1.5 there is a StringBuilder. You use these to accumulate the data from all of the calls to charactrers() between the startElement and endElement.
    Each parser can decide how often it calls characters, so you have to be able to process data from several calls.

  • Problems importing SAXParser

    Hi
    I'm using Netbeans IDE 4.0 and I want to use an XML parser. I've downloaded Xerces2 from Apache: http://xml.apache.org/xerces2-j/
    Now, I want to import different packages. I use:
    import org.xml.sax.XMLReader;
    import org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser;
    Both lines are are autocompleted by Netbeans, but the last line does not compile. I get this error:
    java 12: package org.apache.xerces.parsers. does not exist
    I guess I need to include something in the classpath, however I've included everything I can think of. A screendump of my classpath can be found here: http://selsoe.homepage.dk/classpath.jpg
    When autocompleting the last line, Netbeans shows that no Javadocs exist for this package - I've tried to add it without luck, but I'm not sure if it can be the cause of the problem. What puzzles me, is that if Netbeans can autocomplete it, why doesn't it exist??
    /Mikkel

    Set this property
    -Dorg.xml.sax.driver=org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser
    also use the following import
    import org.xml.sax.*;
    import org.xml.sax.helpers.*;

  • SAXParser InputStream problem - URGENT

    hi
    i'm trying to parse a a xml document as an inputstream, but every time i try to compile the code the following error appears:
    "Incompatible type for method. Can't convert java.io.InputStream to java.lang.String".
    the parse constructor as an inputstream input parameter. i don't know why this error happens.
    the code is something like this:
    Parser parser = new SAXParser();
    InputStream is =null;
    parser.setDocumentHandler(sample);
    parser.setEntityResolver(sample);
    parser.setDTDHandler(sample);
    parser.setErrorHandler(sample);
    //some code
    //texto_xml is a CLOB variable
    is = texto_xml.getAsciiStream();
    parser.parse(is);
    can someone help me?
    thanks in advanced

    Also, use the factory to get your SAX Parser instance:
    SAXParserFactory factory=SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
    factory.setValidating( true ); //set true to validate content against DTD
    SAXParser parser = factory.newSAXParser();

  • Combine xerces SAXParser with Chat Server problem

    I am trying to change this ChatServer so it communcates using XML instead of reagulal text. I am having a hard time reading an xml stream from the clientchat. I am not getting any error but the StringBuffer, "xmlMessage" in ChatXMLParser does not contain any data after the while loop. Furthermore , the parse() method does not accept StringBuffers.
    thanks
    Here is the chat handler:
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class ChatHandler extends Thread {
      protected Socket s;
      protected DataInputStream i;
      protected DataOutputStream o;
      protected static Vector handlers = new Vector ();
      protected ChatXMLParser chatXMLParser;
      protected BufferedReader br;
      public ChatHandler (Socket s) throws IOException {
        this.s = s;
        i = new DataInputStream (new BufferedInputStream (s.getInputStream ()));
        o = new DataOutputStream (new BufferedOutputStream (s.getOutputStream ()));
      public void run () {
        String name = s.getInetAddress ().toString ();
        try {
          broadcast (name + " has joined.");
          handlers.addElement (this);
          while (true) {
             String msg = i.readUTF ();
            chatXMLParser = new ChatXMLParser(i);
              MessageObject messageObject;
              messageObject = chatXMLParser.getMessageObject();
           //broadcast (name + " - " + msg);
    ....I created ChatXMLParser to handle the xml parsing:
    import org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser;
    import org.xml.sax.*;
    import org.xml.sax.helpers.DefaultHandler;
    import java.io.*;
    public class ChatXMLParser extends DefaultHandler {
         private MessageObject messageObject = new MessageObject();
         private String local;
         private BufferedReader br;
         public ChatXMLParser (DataInputStream dis){
              br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(dis));
              String line = "";
              StringBuffer xmlMessage = new StringBuffer();
              try{
                   while ((line = br.readLine()) != null) {
                        xmlMessage.append(line);
              } catch (IOException e) {System.out.println(e);}
              SAXParser parser = new SAXParser();
              parser.setContentHandler(this);
              try{
                   parser.parse(xmlMessage);
              } catch (SAXException e) {
                   System.err.println ("!"+e);
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   System.err.println ("!!"+e);
         public void startElement (String uri, String local, String qName,Attributes atts){
              this.local = local;
         public void characters(char[] text, int start, int length){
              String Content = new String(text, start, length);
              if (!Content.trim().equals("")){
                   if (local.equals("body")){
                        messageObject.setBody(Content);
                   }else{
                        messageObject.setUserName(Content);
         public MessageObject getMessageObject(){
              return messageObject;
    }

    Furthermore , the parse() method does not accept StringBuffers.But it DOES accept Readers (if wrapped in an InputSource), and you can get a Reader from a StringBuffer.

  • Problem with SAXparser

    Hello..
    I have the following problem. When I parse an xml document with blank spaces and numbers with decimals, its sometimes comes out as one string and sometimes as two, for example "First A" sometimes comes out as "First" and "A" and sometimes as "First A", which is how its stored in the xml file. Same with numbers like 19.20. Im enclosing a little of my code..
    public void characters(char buf[], int offset, int len)
    throws SAXException
    if (textBuffer != null) {
    SaveString = ""+textBuffer;
    if(i>-1)
    numbers[i] = SaveString;
    Whats wrong and how do I fix it.
    Best Regards Dan
    PS I have more code, in data and out data if needed.Ds

    Nothing's wrong. SAX parsers are allowed to send text nodes to the characters() method in more than one piece, and you've seen that happening. You can't assume that characters() is given an entire text node.

    and similar traces for ContactInfo, CreditCard, Account, Profile, ...
    I nevertheless get to the main screen of the Petstore as if everything
    worked well. In fact, it seems like the DB got populated somewhat
    correctly; only tbe named sequence tables are unchanged (btw: are the
    named sequences expected to be auto-created with
    create-default-dbms-tables enabled ?). The strange thing is that every
    correct row (in my case having the even IDs) is followd by an all (except the
    odd numbered ID field) "NULL" row. This does not happen in all
    ...EJBTABLEs --- Address and ContactInfo for example are affected, but Profile
    is not.
    It seems as if ordering a rattlesnake would work well, even though more
    of the same type of Execptions appear in the jdbc log. I suspect that the
    trouble will start when the 10 cached ID are exhausted.
    Any ideas?
    Kai

    It seems that something is still running on port 8080 - you should double check that your Apache server is indeed shut down and maybe reboot the system.
    Alternatively, you could change the value of this (HTTP) port in <installdir>/domains/domain1/config/domain.xml file.

  • Problem with Application server

    Hi All,
    I'm facing problem with Application Server. When I installed the appserver and started it.. It started with the message " server has been started and some services will run at back". But when I tried stopping it using the stop default server i got the message that there is no server running but when i saw in the task manager i cud see two process running 1) appserver.exe and 2) imqbroker(something).exe so eventually I had to kill it.
    Now when I'm trying to start the application server again its giving me this message "CLI156 Could not start the domain domain1" and below is the log file attached if its of any help

The PATH must be consistently formated (e.g. C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\bin; ) or the Appserver may not be able to start and/or stop.  Mixed quoted spaces in your PATH can cause problems, so the launcher will remove all double quotes before invoking the process. The most reliable solution would be to remove all spaces from your path before starting the Appservers components.  |#]

    Thanks in advance
    Ajay

    The VERY FIRST message in the server log gives you a hint as to what the problem might be. The server thinks you have spaces in your PATH to the application server. Therefore, the solution is to kill the server however you need to (task manager, whatever) and then reinstall it in a path that doesn't contain spaces. That's the low-hanging fruit here; if that doesn't work, well, then we will have to find some other solution.
