Scale up the number of transactions on my oracle db using RAC

Hi
I have a client/server application, with clustered server. I have a single instance oracle database connected to the clustered server. I am planning on using RAC to remove database as single point of failure.
At the same time I want to scale up the transaction rate on the database. I plan to start with two hosts in the RAC and not sure what kind of storage to use.
Appreciate any suggestion as to the kind of RAC setup that will give me better database speed.
Please help.

By the way, Your design depends on your application.
when you have plan to use RAC... You should look Gigabit NIC on interconnect as well.

  • How to find the number of ODBC connections to Oracle Database

    Hi All,
How to find the number of ODBC connections and all connections to the Database in last week. Are there any views to get this information?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mahi

What Ed said is true that Oracle doesn't note which type of protocol is connecting to the database, however, you can see which program is accessing the database.
For example: if you already know of a user using ODBC, you can verify as:
select username, osuser, terminal, program from v$session where username = 'SCOTT'
    USERNAME                 OSUSER          TERMINAL   PROGRAM
    SCOTT                    IUSR_SRV231     SRV231     w3wp.exe
    SCOTT                    IUSR_SRV231     SRV231     w3wp.exe
2 rows selected.Assuming that you can confirm the progam noted in the above (example) is the one using ODBC, then you can change the query such as:
    SQL> select username, osuser, terminal, program from v$session where program = 'w3wp.exe';
    USERNAME                 OSUSER          TERMINAL   PROGRAM
    SCOTT                    IUSR_SRV231     SRV231     w3wp.exe
    SCOTT                    IUSR_SRV231     SRV231     w3wp.exe
2 rows selected.Just for kicks, I checked our listener.log file, but there was no reference of odbc in it either.
    Hope this helps...

  • How do I limit the number of rows retrieved at a time using RefCursor?

I have a PL/SQL package in use, that returns a REF CURSOR. This is currently being used in a Forms 6i application. Now I want to develop an ASP.NET web application that displays exactly the same information as my Forms 6i module. In fact those two applications will be used concurrently for a while.
I looked at the sample code provided on otn.oracle.com and decided to use the OracleDataAdapter.Fill()-method to fill a dataset and bind that dataset to a pageable GridView. Now I wonder, whether this method retrieves ALL records of the query at once and how I can limit the number of rows fetched? The Select statement retrieves up to 10000 rows at a time. Most of the time, a user is only interested in the first 20-30 rows. Forms 6i fetches more rows as the user scrolls down, how can I implement the same behavior in ODP.NET?
    - Markus

Excuse me, but the reply does not quite answer my question. Maybe I did not explain my concerns clear enough:
I understand the use of the two properties (RowSize and FetchSize) to reduce the amount of round trips needed to transfer the data - not the number of rows fetched in total. This would still lead to a situation where all rows are transferred, when I am using the OracleDataAdapter.Fill()-Method. Is this correct or did I misunderstand the function of this method?
I quote the otherwise really helpful article you send me:
Of course, there is a cost if the fetch size is arbitrarily large. More client-side memory and processor cycles will be needed to store and manage a larger amount of data. The goal is to find a high-performing balance between the number of round trips and the amount of data retrieved per trip.
My RowSize is for sure a bit larger than the one in the given example. The query will probably be used by up to 100 users at a time, so I would like to limit the resource-costs not only on the network by the number of round trips, but also on the web-server which is storing all these records in it's memory per user-request.

  • Is there a way to restrict the number of attempts for a remediated question using advanced actions?

I have the following slides in my project:
    content slide 1
    content slide 2
    question slide 1
    question slide 2
Question slide 1 is a question about content slide 1. Question slide 2 is a question about content slide 2. I would like to restrict the total number of attempts to two for each question. If question 1 is answered incorrectly on the first attempt, the learner would be returned to content slide 1 for review. Clicking the next button will take the learner back to the missed quiz question and allow them a second attempt to answer it correctly. If they answer it incorrectly again, it is scored as incorrect and the learner is taken to question slide 2.
Can this be done or does remediation keep repeating until the learner answers the question correctly?
If that is the case, can I achieve my objective by using advanced actions? And, if so, can you provide step by step instructions on how to do this?

I think it could be possible, but giving you step-by-step instructions, sorry, that would take a lot of time. Did you use advanced actions already? My archived blog has a lot of use cases and tutorials, but I think it is not fair to ask on a forum for step-by-step instructions for each use case you want to create.  The most important thing will be to make sure that the user always remains in the Quiz scope, you can use the new system variable cpInQuizScope while testing. There is no system variable for attempts on question level, only one on Quiz level, so you'll have to create a user variable to track the attempts on question level. A big problem is that when you leave a question slide, without using the remediation work flow, the attempts are considered as finished. Personally I would prefer for that reason to not use the default question slides. You could try out a combination of remediation and advanced actions, never did test that?

  • How do I see the number of e-mails in my inbox using the standard mail app?

    Hi,
Before ios7 I used to be able to see how many e-mails were in my inbox for each synced account.  Now this information doesn't appear like it used to.  It is very frustrating for me as I used to use this as a tool to prompt a tidy up of my inbox for each account.  When the number started to increase above 50 I would delete rubbish ones and sort ones to keep into other folders.  Does anybody know anything about the reasons behind this or if you can turn the function back on?
Basically I would go to my inbox and start scrolling through my inbox and the top of each mail item it would say something like '3 of 52' '4 of 52' and so on...
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

    Delete them from your inbox.

  • [Win VC++ 6.0 ]How to get the number of files count in a folder using VC++ 6.0?

    Hi all,
Can any one tell how to get the number of files(.EPS) count inside a folder when the folder path is specified in VC++ 6.0?
    Thanks in Advance.

I'm a little confused by the question, but it sounds like you're asking how to count the number of files with a particular extension in a given directory? That's not really an AI SDK question, but it's a fairly easy one to find if you google it. If you're trying to use Illustrator to do it, AI doesn't have a general purpose file API. It has a few functions to do some things that Illustrator needs, but I don't think enumerating directories is one of them.

  • Need to know how to limit the number of rows returned on Oracle

MS SQL Server has a command called 'set row count'.
We are trying to find similar one on Oracle.
What we are trying to do is that instead of using rownum in the query statement, we would like to find way to limit the number of rows returned. I understand that we can use JDBC resultSet object, but that's not what we want.
I know Oracle has one called arraysize, but this would not limit the number of rows returned either.
    Pease help.
    Thanks

I understand that we can use JDBC resultSet object, but that's not what we want.I'm not sure which feature of ResultSet you use and which not.
But if this question has anything to do with JDBC (that's the forum where you put it), I'd recommend to use Statement.setMaxRows(). This will limit the count of rows which your statement will fetch into it's ResultSet.

  • What limits the number of MII connections to Oracle.

We are using MII 12.0.5 and an Oracle database and are seeing errors in the logs to the effect:
SQL error occurred on connection jdbc:oracle:thin:@mii001:1527:SMD: code=0, state="null", message="Listener refused the connection with the following error:
ORA-12518, TNS:listener could not hand off client connection
The Connection descriptor used by the client was:
    mii001:1527:SMD
I am ot an Oracle expert and I have not seen this issue before. What is limiting the number of connections? Is this a MII configuration issue that I am not aware of or an Oracle database issue?

    Hello sparks,
I assume you are getting this error when you are trying to connect to databse while configuring Dataservers in MII,if fo what are the value you passed in the fields PoolMax and PoolSize while connecting to the database.

    I see.
Just my two cents on this:
    - you enable auditing, when there is a requirement for it (business/legal wise), so it isn't really about the technical overhead
    - and of course there is overhead. It's just the question whether or not your users will see a increased response time because of that.
    > how can i check these stats in DB level. (table/view)
Check V$SYSSTAT and V$SYSMETRIC on Oracle level.
These should contain the information you like to see.
(btw: in my first reply I referred to how easy it is to create these statistic information on DB kernel level )

  • Sales Invoice - Fixing the number of rows isn't the solution. Ideas?

    Hi All,
I have been working on converting the standard eBS Sales Invoice report to BIP over the past few weeks. I started to use the solution on Tim's blog:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/xmlpublisher/2007/03/27/
For those people who haven't looked this, the solution uses variables to set and calculate the number of transaction rows to be displayed on a page. Filler rows are also inserted to pad out the page should the number of transaction rows be less that the number to be displayed on a page (if using this be careful though as there is a problem with the way the filler rows work as pointed out by Mike Parr in the comments of the blog http://blogs.oracle.com/xmlpublisher/2007/03/anatomy_of_a_template_ii_heade.html).
This solution is fine if the size of the data in the transaction row is never long enough to cause it to wrap within a column. For example, in the Sales Invoice, it is common for the Invoice Line Description to wrap 3 or 4 lines within the column. When this happens, the rows per page method goes out of the window as the number that can physically fit on the page is reduced due to the single data row spanning multiple layout rows.
I have had a good play around with fixing table row heights but to no avail. Also had a look at some of the standard RTF templates available in the latest release of R12. but couldn't find an example where this problem is addressed. I am 100% sure that someone must have hit this before so any advice and/or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Perhaps the solution for this could be incorporated into a future blog post or example?
    Cheers,
    Jon.

Yep agreed. With fixed width fonts you could determine how many characters will display on a line but there is no telling where the word wrapping will occur. Suppose you could get really clever and use the position of the spaces to determine where the wraps will occur, then work out how many rows the line will take up (gulp!). Anyway, using fixed width fonts like courier will make the report look rubbish so I want to avoid this.
A response from the Oracle bod's wouldn't go a miss on this? Tim, et al?
    Cheers,
    Jon.
