Scaling this beast

Hi,
I want to know if Re: DB file sequential read is really a very peculiar, cazy, brainsick and bizarre server..
I wish to give a few more bits of information about this, those like the number of users connected to it during normal and peak times, type of queries executed.
At any given point of time, there will be 400 sessions on the database (select count(1) from v$session), out of which somewhere around 14 to 20 will be ACTIVE. During peak hours, the number of user sessions would reach 2000, which is the processes parameter in the init.ora. Not sure of what the number of ACTIVE sessions would be, because the server is already hanged by the time we notice this 2000 sessions, and we are gone mad!
Queries fired involve complex arithmetic, grouping, sorting and analytic functions. All sessions are handled by DEDICATED server processes. Single instance, 12 CPUs, 14GB SGA, 10 GB Buffers, 11 GB PGA, multiple hard disks. Database is in Archivelog mode, Oracle 10g with Physical standby configured.
Process info: 2 DBWns, 10 ARCns
Kindly give me your opinions on this database.
Thanks,
Aswin.

Depends how complex and large your queries and sorts are. But it's perfectly reasonable to tie up 12 CPUs with 12 queries if you try hard enough. It's quite possible that your problem is simple CPU starvation.
You need to collect some detail of how the threat builds.
Pick a small number of statistics - for starters perhaps just the v$sysstat "CPU used by this session", or a related CPU time from the time model or o/s stats that Oracle captures - add in the count from v$session and write a simple job to query and record the results every 30 seconds. This may give you some insight into the behaviour of ths system just before the catastrophe arrives.
Have you mentioned the front-end: Is this a web-based application with a set of web application servers ? If so, is this an intermittent and random problem ? If so, it could be a side effect of the configuration of the web application servers - when the database gets busy they can "panic" and respond by starting up lots more sessions which stall at the database, causing the web application to start up even more sessions ... until you hit the process or session limit.

  • Should I finally put this beast out to pasture?

I installed Photoshop CS5 trial onto the back of my dinosaur (Dell 866MZ P2 512 RAM Vista Home Premium 32bit) and it SEEMED to install just fine, but when I try opening it the only "image" I can seem to work with is the Windows Error Box: "Photoshop CS5 has stopped working"
Actually, I lied-- I've seen 2 images, the second being the Adobe box: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000001d) Click OK to terminate the application"
    Could the 512RAM be an...umm...issue?
(Dang! I thought at least I could run it in "Glacial Speed" mode...)

Yeah, I read the system requirements, this was a little bit of an experiment -- I was just curious...( I basically use that old Dell to put things on and try to break them; but it's getting too long in the tooth to even be a good thrasher PC ).
Shucks, I even did a clean install of Vista on a freshly formatted old hard drive I had with absolutely nothing else before I installed the PS C5, so I guess it simply ain't gonna work.
Believe it or not, that old P2 with XP Pro does CS4 dang respectably, I believe the reason it's still a contender is it's RDRAM (which has always amazed me in what it can do). Mind you, deciding that rambus was the wave of the future was one of my WORST tech decisions of all time, I spent years waiting for the price to drop and it aint happened yet (maybe next year?
And yes, using Vista is pretty nutso (apologies...?...to Bart ) in any case! Before I got Win7 Ultimate for my "real" box last year I had Home Premium Vista on it for about 3 months at one point and finally reverted to XP Pro

  • Is this slow performance when importing CD's into iTunes ?

    Hi,
My new iMac 20" arrived this weekend. Since then I've been getting acquainted, being new to Macs. I wanted to build up my iTunes library, so I grabbed a box of my CDs and began importing them one by one. I was expecting my new iMac to really fly through them after reading the reviews of how much faster the new Core 2 Duo are over previous iMacs. I remember a table of stats in the MacWorld reviews, and for iTunes test, these machines were clocked at under 2 minutes for whatever it was they ripped in iTunes. YMMV certainly applies, but I was setting my expectation that my iMac could rip a CD in 2 - 3 minutes.
Umm, my experience is way off that. In fact, I would say my iMac took about as long to rip a CD as my 7 year old Dell PC with 256 MB of mem and a first gen Pent 5.
I decided to pick a CD and time how long it takes to import on my iMac, then take same CD and time how long it takes to import into iTunes on his new PC.
CD - Rush, Moving Pictures, 7 songs, 39.8 min, 403.1 MB
    Encoding - AAC, 192 kbps
My rig - iMac 20", 2 GB RAM, 256 MB VRAM, Core 2 Duo and 250 HB with latest version of OS X
My son's rig - intel D955xbklkr socket 775 atx mobo, intel pentium D840 3.2 GHz processor, Corsair twinx pc5400 DDR2 667 Mhz mem ( 2 x 1024 mb ), HD - Seagate 250 GB SATA2 7K with 16 MB buffer, Pioneer DVR-111D DVD burner, and XFX 7600GS extreme graphics card, Win XP Pro, SP2 ( we built this beast with gaming in mind, with his own money ) * the CPU and memory are NOT overclocked and no other tweaks. just build it, install it and run it.
    The results:
    iMac - 7 minutes
    PC - 2 minutes
I ran the import twice on each machine and came up with the same results.
Neither machine was running anything else at the time.
Granted there are some differences between the machines that should account for some differences, especially on the hard drive, with SATA2 and a nice 16 MB cache ( it's one sweet HD ) on the PC, but this difference is huge. We're not talking 20, 40 or 60 % faster on the PC. This was > 3x faster, so basically over 300% faster.
Anyone have an idea ? Without digging into the specs, I'd say the DVD drives should be able to read equally fast, the Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz with 4 MB cache should be equal if not superior to the older, D 820 3.2 GHz, the memory is the same speed, but I'm not sure about system bus speed on the P C ( 800 MHz ? ). Graphics cards don't factor into this equation, but the HD probably plays a big role, and I think the Seagate in my son's PC has the iMac beat hands down.
What are other iMac C2D owners seeing for average import times ?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Trevor,
When you say your superdrive rips, the import speeds are typically around 20x, what encoding method and bit rate are you using ?
I imported another CD and watched for what import speed numbers were displayed. Routinely, they hovered around 8x and sometimes up to 12 or 13x, but never higher. I was told by someone at our local user's group meeting that ripping at AAC 192kbps was a double-pass, I think that was the words they used, and therefore slower. ( Many members thought 7 minutes to rip was typical ) I'm not so sure if that means the drive will only spin at half it's rated max speed ? Anyway, I walked over to my son's PC with the CD and ripped it at AAC 192kbps to his iTunes library. The numbers I saw were from 18x to frequently 23, 24 and sometimes briefly to about 26x. His drive has a max of 40x. By my reasoning, anything that would cause iTunes to rip this CD at a slower speed, whether due to the encoding rate or the CD's surface condition, should affect both computers equally, yes ? Yet the drive on the PC performed on average at twice the rate of the iMac. I think it's safe to say the rip speed is comfortably within the operating margins of both drives.
I'm not yet fully convinced this is normal for an iMac. My CD are in excellent shape. I'm the only one who uses them and I handle them with about as much care as the old audiofiles used to when they handled their vinyl LPs ( well, at least not as far as wearing cotton gloves and sweeping the dust off ). Most of them have absolutely no visible scratches or oily finger prints on their surfaces. I might experiment and see what rates I get if I use MP3 or a lower bit rate for AAC.

  • Why am I getting this error message when trying email a PDF?Server Connection Error. Please verify that port 143 is available for connection on your machine or contact your administrator.

My Inspector for my house sent me his report via PDF that I had to access from an online link. I downloaded it but cannot forward it in an email to my insurance company who is requiring a copy. I get this error report every time:
Server Connection Error. Please verify that port 143 is available for connection on your machine or contact your administrator.
I have no idea what this means. Can someone help? I really don't want to have to print and scan this beast but I've been messing with this for 2 days now and am out of ideas.
    Thanks!

I'm having the same issue.  Did you resolve it?

  • Scaled a movie, after pics are too big.

I've created a Slideshow and resized my pictures to suit the width of the timeline (1080W x 720H). Was hoping just to drag them onto new item and automatically scale the pics but this resulted in a black line along the widths; which displeased me.
So my pics are fantastic and the Slideshow is to the beat of the music. I then added a video to the timeline, and I had to scale accordingly.
So I managed to get the video fixed and everything's running great up until the video ends. I then import my new pics and they are far too big.
I have a keyframe right at the end of the movie, but the pics are then far too big.
I'm missing something really small. I am of course able to scale the remaining images down, but I have quite a few more to bring in and would rather learn what's causing this beast?
I finished my previous video, incase you guys have any comments or suggestions to improve

while i agree it would be a nice feature, you have to remember, you're re-purposing GB, your use is not the one for which it was designed; one song per project.
you can always send Apple a feature request with the Feedback menuItem (under the GaageBand menu) to let them know

  • Auto show frame edges live view & scaling

I have just started using InDesign CS5 and I have found how to switch off live view for better performance, but CS5 also has the this thing where if you run the mouse pointer over objects, by default it highlights the frame edges of the object the pointer is on. It also has the icon that shows if it's an image or not. I prefer to work with a clean interface and switch stuff like that on if necessary. Can somebidy help be find where to disable that feature please.
One other thing is when I used to command/option/scale an object, in CS4 it would alway scale proportionately from whichever corner I grabbed. Now by default it scales from the centre of the object. How can I get it back to scaling from the corner I grab please.
    Thanks!

    Frame Edge Highlighting:
This is a oft hated feature that you can't turn off.  Have a look at this Indesign Secrets post here, and here's a summary of some from this forum.

  • I was given a PowerMac G5, how best should I utilise this machine?

I am new to mac but not a total dummy as I used them for design in Art School.
    Hardware Overview:
      Machine Name:    Power Mac G5
      Machine Model:    PowerMac7,2
      CPU Type:    PowerPC 970  (2.2)
      Number Of CPUs:    1
      CPU Speed:    1.6 GHz

      Memory:    4 GB
      Bus Speed:    800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:    5.1.5f2
So what can do with this beast?
Can I give it any more nads, and if so how?
    What components are compatible?
If I get a more current logic board what existing components can be utalised or would it even be worth it?
    thanks!

Can I give it any more nads, and if so how?
Gut it and build a Sandy Bridge based i7 Intel processor hackintosh......
    https://tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=48471
Other than that, nothing that you might do should be based on return of value. Do it for fun or don't do it.....
    Max the RAM.
Add a new hard drive or two (new drives are faster than the originals).
    Heck, get a SSD.
Get a graphics card like a Geforce 6800 GT or Ultra or even a Radeon X800XT.
Or, just stuff it with big drives and use it as a music server. It's too slow to be a video (large format) server.

  • Print scaling

Trying to make a quick mockup - I have a 6pp cover printed as spreads, scaled to fit on A3.
Adobe will not tell me what percentage it is scaling this down to when I click 'shrink to printable area', so I have no easy way of scaling 4pp inners printed as spreads on A4 to match the cover printed on A3.
Why is there no scale percentage option in Acrobat - this seems like a pretty basic function - am I missing something here?

Are you aware of the items marked with Red arrow on this:
Red arrow is pointing to the page Scaling drop down menu, the left arrow indicate the scaling in percentage  in example here the item is an index card 4by6 and it reducing the item printing by 91%.  Fit to Printable area and Shrink to Fit to Printable area  are different Fit to Printable area shrinks or expands depending upon content.
Other options Tile Large, Title all Pages, Multple pages per sheet and booklet shrink or expand percentage (scalling) accordingly.  also above the percent note the window show an representation of what the page will look like. All of this is based on your printer. The example above is based on my printer.
    Is this what you need?

  • F4v & flv show as generic icons and are not scaled

    Hi!
I'm using Bridge CS4 for some years and since the reinstall of my operating system (Vista Business 32bits) and of CS4, all the f4v and flv files are showing as generic file icons. That means that I do not get the video thumbnail for f4v or flv files in the Content panel. This was working before my reinstall.
Also, the f4v or flv videos show only the top left corner in the preview panel. This has something to do with scaling: Bridge shows the preview of a 640x480 f4v or flv video normally but the 1920x1080 videos are not scaled.
I also use MOV files and for these, I get a scaled preview and a thumbnail in the Content panel.
Any clue how I can get back the video thumbnails for f4v and flv files as well as the scaling?

    @ Curt Y,
I really appreciate your input. It brought me one step further in any case.
I made a couple of screenshots with a before and after state. Please note that the before and after pictures where made on two computers with different screen resolution, one laptop I am now trying to fix and one desktop (this will show in the degree of scaling of the previews in Bridge). These two computers, however, display the same problem regarding the flv and f4v files.
    This is before: (desktop, unfixed):
    - a flv shows as generic icon, in this case the VLC Media Player icon
    - the flv preview is not scaled (I see only part of the picture, the top left corner)
This is what VLC Media Player shows with the same file (desktop and laptop):
    - the flv plays
    - I get the full picture (scaled)
This is after the install of K-Lite (laptop, partially fixed):
    - the flv and f4v files have a thumbnail (and not a generic icon anymore)
    - the preview is still not scaled (to avoid confusion please note here the resolution difference between the laptop and desktop screen: I see less on the laptop but it's normal. So I get a smaller top left corner with just the sky and no house).
For my flv file, G Spot shows exactly the same codec and warning as your screenshot with barsandtone.flv.
So, now I have thumbnails. I just need to find a way to tell Bridge to scale the preview...

  • Dv7t-3000 - Sata or Sata 2 - Please help explain what this has!

I assumed that Sata 2 being mainstream for so long, this new laptop of mine would have it.
I want to buy one of the nicer SSD for this unit, but I can NOT confirm anywhere that it will run up to 300 megs.
If it's Sata 1 then I wouldn't be getting much performance gain from a SSD as this 7200RPM HDD rates up to 100 megs.
I contacted HP Support and got told that my laptop only has Sata 1.
I find this impossible to believe.  Why in the world would HP do that?  I read in a post on the forums that this laptop
falls into the top 5% for overall performance for laptops.  How is that so unless it has sata 2?  Why would they
have old Sata 1 in such new technology?
Can anyone confirm if HP Support is correct?  I have the guy second guessing himself right now and he asked for serial number to try and find documentation to support his claim.  I may have to RMA this beast and start searching for a laptop that has SATA II because that is the main reason I wanted a laptop!  For the SSD to WOW me!
Thanks in advance for your thoughts, input, and effort you may put into this!
    WWW2000
    UPDATE:
Otay.  Now I understand why all the reviews out there say what they say about HP support.  Makes you feel like you carried your new puppy into an auto garage to learn about it.  WRONG people, wrong place!
Can anyone who knows english and knows about computers please tell me why the ...  why HP would be retarded and put Sata 1 in this killer laptop?  Do they really enjoy upsetting their customers?  All I kept getting for that supervisior was "you computer customized and you hard drive you choose sata 1"
I bought it directly from HP.com so I could have everything in it that you may not get from a retail store.  She couldn't seem to grasp that nowhere on hp.com does it let you know if you get sata 1 or sata 2.   Option not offered and it SHOULDN'T be.  It should automatically be sata 2!  Sata one was like so 1998!
Sorry for being so upset.  I just want a killer SSD to make this beast all it should be and HP is telling me it's not going to happen.  Do I need to start an RMA?  Or can someone confirm that I can get read speeds of 230 from that SSD I want?

    Hi,
Many owners(those who can afford it) of the dv7t series are putting OCZ agility and vertex drives in to replace their SATA hard disk.
I have no doubt that the speed of the SSD disk will wow you even if it isn't SATA2. Think about restart times of 58 seconds!

  • Misled and disappointed - don't waste your time with this "player"

Frankly, I feel extremely misled by the description of AMP on its product page. Calling it a Media Player and all the talk of being able to watch what you want, when you want and streaming and downloading video - all you can *actually* do is watch stuff from the signed up content providers, or that you've already got on your hard drive (and have presumably got a player for already, that will almost certainly take up a lot less screen estate than this beast). Oh, and there's some mention of adding RSS feeds of videos - though looking at other posts here whether that works is debatable. Anything else might as well not exist.
I had hoped that it would be a way of watching embedded streamed flash videos without having to have the whole webpage that they're on open - this would give you just the video, so would be more compact, and would be resizeable so you could watch it at any size you liked, not just the default or full-screen. After all, coming from Adobe, there would be no problem about having to reverse engineer the RTMP format.
Maybe even (though I thought it unlikely) being able to download videos where the provider permitted it - no worry though, there are other tools for that.
Also - the design. A massive window, not resizeable at all except to minimise / maximise. Appalling contrast - it's like being in a cave, everything's so black. I couldn't even see that there were scroll bars - just waved my mouse around where I thought they should be.
It's like having the worst, most useless part of RealPlayer (the download centre, or whatever they call it) and not the player itself. This is *not* a media player - a client, maybe.
Frankly, the only reason I can see for installing this is if there is some content that it has that you can't get anywhere else. If not, don't waste your time - use something else.
Like I say, I'm disappointed. I feel like I've been lied to and had my time wasted. Unless I'm *really* missing something??

  • PLease help this is ridiculous, wont recognize/eject cd

My friend came over with a burnt cd i put it in the drive and then nothing
no spinning, noise,or icon. I have tried every trick in the book and every startup method. I even target disked my computer with my sister's to see if i could even see the volume of a removable disk. I have tried the thing in terminal no go and also he thing with disk utility. The problem is the computer hasn't recognized the cd therefore there is nothing to eject. the drive makes no attempt to eject the disk no matter what i do and the disk is not even reading. If i could just see the recognition of the cd somewhere i think id know how to get it out. I dont wanna have to lug this beast to the store for a simple fix. If someone could please shed some light on this for me youd be a great help.

As to if the disk was finalized I am unsure. It was just a cd with some techno on it but it was for sure not burned on a mac. when i try to put the computer to sleep and press eject at least to cd reads it spins for 3 seconds sounds as though its going to eject but then remains dormant. And i must have resarted my computer 12 times last night holding down the mouse button to no avail. This is frustrating this used to happen with my g4 powerbook that is why i bought a new computer. Thank you though Stefan for at least another method.
